The Moment I Retired From XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a great game full of unique, tense encounters and stressful situations. But there was one moment in particular, a perfect storm of game crashes combined with a long mission and a soldier's death, that caused me to stop playing it for a while.

Wow, y'know: Yesterday I raged quit in Battlefield 3. Oh and I also used the bathroom a few times, had a beer with friends, watched tv wit my lady, called my big sister and checked my email.

Maybe I should write an article about that too, and submit it to n4g.

majiebeast4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

What did you talk about with your big sister?

This type of stuff belongs on twitter.

Donnieboi4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

Lolol

We talked about her daughter, and how I owe her for smoking up a few bags of her good leafy green without her permission!

I agree man. Article "topics" like this are spur-of-the-moment tweets at best.

Very odd. Its title makes u think there's a reason he quit. At first maybe bioshock...maybe the game crashes...nope. there isn't an answer at all. He experienced exactly that which makes the game great, which he already knew...and then the article ends...wtf?

McFist4008d ago

Agreed. He wins, loses both Heavies and then says what his mistakes were. He was reckless and that's no reason to retire.

Game crashes aside, it sounds more like the author failed to adhere to tactics, which they do mention their mistake at the end of the article.

I never dash, unless it is with my assault, who is designed to be a lone wolf that can charge at enemies, even into unknown areas (if you're that brazen). The Heavy was given a terrible order (even one for an Assault)and died because of it. They should not be on their own and the should not move into unknown territory. No reason to retire from XCOM because of a rookie mistake, but being attached to your squad should be enough reason to not make silly errors.

I get attached to my squad and, because of that, I rarely make mistakes. Sometimes, during the enemy's free move they might move to a position where I am easily flanked. That's easy to fix, as I never Dash immediately. I still have a chance to move or fire/overwatch. I work the flank with either two 3-man teams or two 2-man teams, depending on my upgrades. I attempt to catch the enemy in the middle to allow myself the chance to catch them in crossfire. However, if they are ahead of one group the other group can easily maneuver to outflank them.

Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the converted. Fact is: mistakes get veteran operatives killed and, yes, the hit percentages are dumb, because I have missed on shots that had 100% chance to hit. Those are what hurt.

I miss my Bubblegum McGee :( .....

Luckily his twin brother Bumblebee McGee soon enlisted...

Then.... good ol' Bumblegum McGee.

Then Bubblebee McGee.

All with their pink flattops, mustaches, and yellow armor.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930172d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183172d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
