Wrongful Snake: The Problem With Yet Another Metal Gear Prequel

PixlBit | "The PixlBit staff is quite diverse in their gaming passions, and it’s one of my favorite things about writing here. In addition to being “Mr. Final Fantasy” I probably also hold the title of biggest Metal Gear Solid fanatic. Well, I might tie with Patrick Kijek, but MGS is a series that I’ve followed religiously since playing the Japanese Famitsu demo disc way back in 1998. It follows, then, that I should be beyond excited at the announcement of Metal Gear Solid 5, right? While I’m always happy to hear of another main entry in the series directed by Hideo Kojima, I just can’t muster up much enthusiasm for this one. Even the shininess of new console hardware and the Fox Engine can’t get my blood pumping. Why? Chalk it up prequel fatigue, and a longing for what could have been."

ShugaCane4014d ago

I get your point. BUT, this is Kojima we're talking about. If he is developing a prequel (again), it's because he's sure it can surprise us (again). I trust him and his decisions. Plus, the MGS lore is so huge there's still room for plenty of other stories.

KingKelloggTheWH4014d ago

As much as I love MetalGeat it needs to come to an end before it get's milked.

Zefros4014d ago

how can you milk this franchise? the games are top noth and not coming every year like certain games. there aren't many games that is as good as mgs4. Milking means you get another game each year and the differences is minimal, like they have given us a expansion pack.

Nate-Dog4014d ago

Well Metal Gear Solid 3 will have been released about 5 times in 10 years when the Legacy Collection comes out (and I'm even ignoring region-specific collections here). I think that might be regarded as milking.

coolbeans4014d ago

I've never seen/heard the notion milking can't go hand-in-hand with a quality franchise. It's how over-exorbitant the releases within the franchise become that determines if they're milking it.

sdozzo4014d ago

Already Milked Flame Away

Mounce4014d ago

It's not milked if Kojima puts his heart into each story. What really happens when Milked becomes MILKED is the fearful perception that the game will lose itself and what it used to strive to be and it will lose most what made it special. Since MGS games generally take a long time to make with each MAJOR game? There's a good time apart from eachother unlike games like COD or Assassin's Creed where, AC is now basically a Hollow game with a parkour world shoved into. AC1 was and will always be the Strongest and glitchiest of the series. MGS Remains strong by many points. Where many fans can love MGS1....many fans can instead like MGS2's craziness, some fans love MGS3's 'love' story, then there's people like me who loved the direct Peacewalker took in gameplay. Ground Zeroes and PP look like it'll be NEW favorites too and not because it's milked, but because the story, characters and everything are still ENGAGING and immersive.

gigoran4014d ago

Hey, no problem. If you don't want to know more about the history of the Metal Gear universe then by my guest and not play it. Those of us that are fans of the series will get it, enjoy it, and better understand future releases because of it. You on the other hand, didn't want another prequel.

BiggCMan4014d ago

Not really, they even showed a trailer with Snake ready to shoot himself. What happens after is a complete spoiler, but you cannot know based off the thumbnail.

HarryMasonHerpderp4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

I've never seen that trailer.
An I've completed the game and I know it's not a full on spoiler but it is a little.
When he pointed that gun at himself I was like omg! No Snake!
People who see that thumbnail and haven't or are going to play the game know it's going to happen now and that kinda lessens the impact when you know its coming.
I just think it's a really important scene and one of the most emotional in the series.

BiggCMan4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

Everyone I know that was going to get the game back then, knew there would be a scene with Snake ready to kill himself, it was already known before it released, just not what happened after. Look for the trailer, it shows an older version of the Old Snake model, not the final version. It's an older trailer that's why.

HarryMasonHerpderp4014d ago

Look I know a few people on N4G that still haven't played this game and know nothing about this scene so I'll be telling them to avoid the front page for awhile. It's a crucial scene not only in MGS4 but the whole series and I think it's a spoiler, not that it matters anyway because it won't be getting changed. I just think people should be more considerate when posting these pictures and think about the people who are yet to play the games. The guy could of used so many different pictures.
I saw another one earlier in the week where the thumbnail for a colonial marines article had the end scene from the Prometheus movie in it.

Mono-san4014d ago (Edited 4014d ago )

I'm a huge MGS fan since it's Playstation debut, but I have to say I was a "liiiiiiittle" disappointed when they announced yet another Metal Gear Solid.

Now don't get me wrong on this, I can't wait to get my hands on GZs+TPP=MGSV(?). I was just really looking forward to a whole new game from Kojima.

I was totally anticipating Project Ogre since it was/is supposed to have real ogers in it. I was curious how Kojima would tackle something like a fantasy world with his unique way of game-design and storytelling.

Apart from that, I'd really like him to do a female protagonist at some point.

OT: I think MGSV being another prequel is the only way to continue the series without going stale and feeling stretched. I'm looking forward, to see how everything will evolve, especially Big Boss.

Knowing what's gonna happen while not entirely aware of how we get there will surely make it a bittersweet journey worthwhile and tie the "Story of Snakes" together perfectly, to round up the whole Metal Gear Saga in big fashion.

I do also believe that the whole "V-part" of the game will provide enough intriguing twists and turns to satisfy, and keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

I’d have taken a few of those out. Prefer Sonic over Sonic 2. Outrun should be in there. Maybe even Pong as millions of people had fun with that even if it was repetitive. Final Fight pipped any Streets of Rage game, although Streets of Rage had the better soundtrack. Too many to list l guess. To me, retro gaming is the 1980s, maybe going into early 1990s.

Agree that the generational gap is too broad to really make a strong list. Need to tighten the years a bit. Hard to compare Pac Man with N64 games.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro46d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7246d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2345d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200046d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix46d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198946d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2
