Opinion: Trophies & Achievements – The Lock In Mechanism For Next-Gen
The next generation of games consoles is coming. The PS4 has had its day in the spotlight and we know it will be arriving in at least 1 territory in 2013. We now know that Microsoft’s next console will be announced on the 21st of May . The Wii U is already out in the wilderness, trying its best to increase its market share. Progression to the next generation has begun.

Consumers are soon going to be making their mind up on which consoles to buy from the next-gen offerings. well understandably if you have a considerable amount of trop/achie it might influence your decision but you ain't locking down no one. FREEDOM!!

I have 12 plats and I'm not really a trophy hunter but it does make a difference to me. I often check out what trophies are available in a game and try to get them... And for some games it adds replay value to them. Some games don't need this for replay value, there just that good, and other games are just so bad, nothing would get me to replay them. I know that when my friends are playing a game they think is impossibly hard and I tell them I platniumed it... They are impressed. My psn account transferring over to ps4 is a big deal to me

No way i am giving up my 56 platinums (soon to be 60). I'm just glad a i chose a company that seems to be committed to giving me more great core gaming experiences.

I agree with this article! I was predominantly pc gaming and I just enjoyed the games but I switche and I'm hooked on trophies and I think achievements are stupid. It's crazy for me to think one ditigal award is better than another but it's true

Trophies and achievements are just a bonus, no (good) game ever needed them...

Ilovetheps54012d ago (Edited 4012d ago )

I agree that they don't need them, but it's always good to have something to push me to getting a game 100%. The Ratchet and Clank games are a great example for me. Back when I played them on the PS2, I would constantly just beat the game without worrying about using every weapon or finding every secret. But, trophies in the HD collection pushed me to do all that. It's nice to have sometimes.

I remember when finding all those in game secrets and collectibles used to get you something special to use in game rather than a useless digital award. Now you get a trophy/achv and you have to buy all the extra stuff through microtranactions.

LAME!

Ilovetheps54012d ago

Violents, I agree. I always liked being able to unlock stuff like Big Head Mode or something if you collected all of the collectibles. I kind of miss those kinds of cheats. Or even alternate costumes were great. But as you said, that was before microtransactions.

I care more about transfering my paid content . It's a requirement . Otherwise i might still get your console but will as long as digital aint the default choice , will avoid purchasing any digital version from you .

If anything for trophies they should consider at least marking down what's ps3 and what's not , over merging some total scores

bakagaijin784012d ago

I personally like the merging of trophies. I like that my Vita trophies add to my PS3 trophy count.

But hey, that's just me. :)

ZBlacktt4012d ago

I'd like to see all the trophy hackers taken off the list.... CFW users, account sharing, online pay for trophy services, boosters, glitchers on and on. So many fake BS trophy accounts.
