Raymond: Splinter Cell popularity held back by its complexity

Eurogamer:

There is a feeling among executives at Ubisoft that the Splinter Cell video games should be more popular.

The stealth spy action series was for a time one of Ubisoft's premier franchises, but in recent years it has fallen behind the likes of Far Cry and flagship series Assassin's Creed in Ubisoft's IP pecking order.

Sorry Jade, but that's just bullsh!t.

OccludedGamer4018d ago

Whilst I agree that it isn't overly complex, a lot of the last half of the article mentions how we can play it closer to the originals too. If she can appease the action fanbase and make a better SC game then Conviction I'd be interested.

Blaze9294018d ago

that's freaking crazy. The reason most people complained about SP: Conviction was about the fact that it was TOO EASY.

So now that this is said I don't even know how to feel about the upcoming Blacklist. Chaos Theory. They need to realize why that is still the highest rated in the series.

otherZinc4018d ago

I love the Splinter Cell Series to death!
Along with Ghost Recon & Rainbow Six.

I'm so glad they pushed Rainbow Six back to Next Gen so they could keep the fantastic co-op feature of Terrorist Hunt & other great co-op modes.

Ghost Recon:FS was ruined due to the lack of the great co-op mode that was in Ghost Recon:AW.

Splinter Cell:Blacklist is scaring me because I'm not hearing anything about a co-op mode. The PS3 remake of SC lacked co-op features found in the original game as did Doom 3 Remake.

I hope co-op is in Blacklist as it was in Splinter Cell:Conviction, my son & I played it to death!

So Jade: for me, next time, talk Co-op in Splinter Cell:Blacklist, thanks.

Reborn4018d ago

I'd hardly call Conviction.. complex.

The only thing holding it back is...the publishers/devs themselves.

Root4018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

Yup because they want more money and making the game as action like and easy as they can will attract more sales.

See this is why I hate when developers this gen use an IP but change the game so much it doesn't resemble what it was all about. Create a new IP idiots. It just saddens me people will go along with it and if you complain you are considered a whiner....sorry for caring about a franchise I used to love.

LastDance4018d ago

if it were more like COD, it would be more successful

joab7774018d ago

That's what it is. Then they tell you that our posts r the minority and that most loved conviction etc. If that's true, then no need for this lecture. If there is a perfectionist mode, though, that would be cool b/c I figured it would be another 3rd oerson action game.

Darrius Cole4018d ago

Has anybody considered that Splinter Cell was never really held back. Maybe it just is what it is. Trying to turn it into Call of Duty without giving it the Call of Duty marketing budget is not going to gain you any sales.

Jade just can't allow herself to get upset because Splinter Cell is not doing Metal Gear Solid numbers. Metal Gear Solid has Kojima-san, and Splinter Cell has...Ubisoft.

THamm4018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

Games are just that, GAMES. Trying to be too realistic gets a tad dull. That's why I prefer MGS because it mixes the right blend of realistic elements and totally fantasy elements as well. It makes great storytelling and attention to characters who will compel you to remember them through the series. As for gameplay, they are trying to get people to play but some things are left better unchanged if they worked before

Irishguy954018d ago

Pff

Movies are just that, MOVIES.

Silly argument imo. There are room for all types of everything in any media form

Jek_Porkins4018d ago

Metal Gear is as complex a game and story as I've ever played, but they are some of the most popular games around.

asyouburn4018d ago

The writing in mgs is so much more memorable. I've played every splinter cell but conviction, and honestly I can't remember any of the antagonists names. Mgs on the other hand, I could tell you whatever you wanted to know about the story. So, there's that

cleft54018d ago

Games need to be made for dumb people clearly. Just goes to show that no matter the gender of the exec, the stupidity factor remains the same.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - A Decade in the Shadows

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has been out of action for a decade, so it's time to look back at 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

CoNn3rB246d ago

Sam Fisher is evidently the most skilled stealth operative because no-one has seen him in his own game for years

kevco33246d ago

10 years, in fact. He must be, like, 60 by now?

phoenixwing246d ago (Edited 246d ago )

why make an inspired game that takes effort when you can half ass it with multiplayer gaas games and filler filled assassins creed games?

That question up there is the reason you don't see splinter cell games

zarbor246d ago

Yup, another example that Ubisoft has no idea what they are doing.

MIDGETonSTILTS17246d ago

The entire mark and execute system belonged in another game.

It’s cool, but the polar opposite to how Sam Fisher initially handled.

The original trilogy made shooting very, very difficult, yet a viable option, which ultimately motivates stealth.

The mark/execute system makes shooting stupid easy, to the point of why would you even bother trying stealth as an alternative?

FYouDad245d ago

Because Ghost is the method fans of the series actually prefer? IMark and execute is never forced upon the player you liiterally never have to bother using it even once throughout Blacklist.

Tody_ZA246d ago

The sad part is that I actually really enjoyed the last game, Blacklist. It may have lacked the iconic voice but the gameplay was excellent, and blended stealth, action and a mix really great compared to most games, where none of the three options felt like the wrong way to play. I really hope they either produce a remake of the original game or a proper sequel.

Rikimaru-00246d ago

Isn't UBI Soft remaking splinter cell.

Jade Raymond and Hermen Hulst on why Sony is buying Haven Studios

There's something a little different about PlayStation's plan to acquire Haven Studios. Historically, Sony likes to have a little dating period with a developer, where they might release a few games together before they get married. It's what happened with Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Media Molecule, Insomniac and Housemarque. Yet Sony announced its partnership with Haven a little over a year ago. The developer may be full of established faces who are responsible for hit games such as Assassin's Creed, but it's still a new studio. It's still growing. It's not even announced the PS5 game it's working on, let alone released it. So why do the deal now?

"Obviously we will always carry on making these single-player narrative-based games such as Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and Horizon Forbidden West," Hulst emphasises.

That's good.

solideagle765d ago (Edited 765d ago )

I think Sony slept on FromSoftware (after demon souls success)!
I wonder if Sony is looking to purchase a Japanese dev that would be cool. I expected them to buy Level-5 in PS3 days but now they are publisher. I love and prefer Single player games :)

Terry_B765d ago

What was the last Japanese studio that got bought by Sony and when?

Eonjay765d ago

@Terry

It is my understanding that Japanese companies doesn't usually buy each other and that mergers are far more common. Like Square-Enix or Bandai-Namco.

SonyStyled765d ago

FromSoftware isn’t an independent studio though, so Sony would’ve needed to purchase them from their parent company. It’s owned by a Japanese media/entertainment company, or something along the lines of that, and they’ve owned FromSoftware since before Demons Souls if my memory serves correct.

z2g764d ago

But also:

“ The Haven acquisition will continue Sony's investment in live service and multiplayer games. ”

neutralgamer1992764d ago

This is all part of money already spent which is being announced now. There is still a 10+ billion dollar question that will be answered

solideagle

Sony actually recently invested in the parent company that owns from software who btw made the request to Sony to invest

Terry_B

Sony usually invests like they did with square enix when they were going through a rough patch. They asked Sony to buy the shares and once things stabilized Sony sold back the shares

Japanese publishers are every different. Sony or Nintendo could buy anyone but that's a different culture over there and it makes it next to impossible for an outsider to buy a Japanese publisher

https://www.videogameschron...

Sony is looking to buy big. My guess is they will target Capcom and square enix. But just like Ms Sony won't make all games exclusives. I think times are changing and we will see more cross platform support from both which is great

There will still be must have exclusives but some games are too big to keep away from others

LordoftheCritics765d ago

I think spreading out the acquisition portoflio between established and growing is not a bad idea.

A company with confidence in their values can acquire noobs and instill those values.

rlow1765d ago

Well I’m sure all the acquisition going on in the industry motivated Sony to pull the trigger. But funny how quick Jade was willing to sell. Not even one game under the new studio. I think they must of been angling for this from the get go.

ClosetRebel764d ago

...must have been angling, not must of.

rlow1764d ago

Lol, thanks for the input.

gangsta_red765d ago (Edited 765d ago )

Sony must be betting big on this game to buy this studio so quickly.

Makes me even more curious to see what exactly it is.

Eonjay765d ago

I think this is the supposed first 'terobyte' game whatever that means. As long as it doesn't require 1000 gigs of space on the SDD lets do it lol. In all seriousness, It SOUNDS like some kind of MMO.

jznrpg765d ago

If they make money from these games it’s fine with me if it’s helping find the single player stuff . I do t like live service as I do t have the time to play these never ending games and usually the quality is lesser than you desire . When I was younger I loved Everquest and FF11 but those are MMOs they are slightly different but are still live service imo. If they make a great hardcore VRMMO or MMO like EQ when I retire im in !
