Nintendo's Wii U Advertising Reaches For The Panic Button

Kotaku:

These are so terrible I'd tell you not to watch them, but screw it, if I had to, you have to as well.

If time travel is invented anytime soon, giving us the chance to atone for past mistakes, I like to think the first person in line will be the man who signed off on the name "Wii U" instead of "Wii 2" or "New Nintendo Console That's Not The Wii OK Guys".

iGAM3R-VIII4015d ago

I remember that they also compared the Wii U to the Wii. That wasn't smart because why would you trash your OWN console. They should have compared it to the 360, PS3, or other handhelds and stuff.

I want so badly to ask that kid what he thinks of dark souls 2.

How can a child say it's the best system ever?? He has only been born for a year..

abzdine4015d ago

everybody speaks for his own tastes. People are loving 360 or ps3 just for COD or FIFA every year it's the only game they play.

I respect those who say Wii U is the best console ever even if i dont agree. As long as every gamer finds what he needs that's the most important

dedicatedtogamers4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

The problem with these advertisements is that we all know they're BS. When Nintendo showed off a family playing a Wii, or a "block party" centered around a Wii, or a non-gaming relative walking into the room enjoying the Wii, we all knew it was true because we were experiencing it in our private lives. We all knew that the Wii was sold out everywhere. Our co-workers were talking about the Wii.

With the WiiU, there's barely a fraction of that hype.

PopRocks3594014d ago

What do you mean by BS exactly? All the ads do is show families having fun and expressing excitement over the console. I really don't see what is "BS" about that considering that people have been going nuts practically shouting at Nintendo to market the Wii U more effectively. Not to say that this is all that effective in my opinion, but I can't even remotely imagine how this is as bad as Kotaku, of all sources, is saying it is or why people seem to agree with it.

dedicatedtogamers4014d ago

@ PopRocks

When I saw Wii commercials, I thought in my head "yeah, it really is like that". I worked at Gamestop for a few months leading up to the Wii's launch up through New Super Mario Bros in 2009. I saw, firsthand, the rabid excitement of gamers, families, and non-gamers alike.

Granted, I don't get to see that first-hand anymore (since I no longer work at GS, thank goodness), but the same excitement is not there. If it was there, why are WiiU's sales in the pits? Wii was sold out for nearly 3 years straight. Even when Nintendo increased production in early 2007, it was still sold out. And it was sold out again when NSMB Wii launched.

There isn't any of that excitement of fervor for the WiiU. It's as if people...oh, I don't know...don't care? I mean, I hate to be harsh, but the general public doesn't really seem to care about the WiiU. There are flashier toys to occupy their attention.

pikey4014d ago

so, are you guys the ones that watch a beer commercial and actually believe that if you drink a budweiser you're suddenly cooler, more popular, and extremely hot chicks really dig you? or that there is an actual talking gecko that really wants you to get car insurance?

shut up with your, "but but but that advertising doesnt reflect reality!" when does advertising ever reflect reality?

sinncross4015d ago

The fact that the ad clearly states that the families were compensated breaks a lot of the illusion around the 'reality' of the ad. That said, I think the kid is mostly legit... he is young, I doubt he even knows what Dark Souls is (for example).

not entirely convincing ads though... Nintendo can, and need to, do better.

ChickeyCantor4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

"That wasn't smart because why would you trash your OWN console"

FFS that's not trashing, it's simply putting out the differences between Wii and WiiU. Everyone complains that people didn't, still don't, know the difference between the two. So when Nintendo puts out a factual chart of what is better compared to the old, they are bashing it? A lot of companies do it with their products.

Where does this delusional thought come from? Someone made an issue out of it and people are just hopping the bashwagon.

Comparing it to the 360 and PS3 would just shine light on those consoles too. Free advertisement on their part. Why would they do that? It's irrelevant whether it's better than the 360 or PS3. They need to convince wii ownsers why they should "upgrade" from Wii to WiiU. Nintendo is trying to sell their product, that's their focus. Not Sony or Microsoft. Because to the average end user it doesn't matter.

Hardly seen any promotion material for the Wii U outside of gaming sites. Seemed like I couldn't escape Nintendo ramming the Wii down my throat at the time.

Trunkz4015d ago

That's not advertising with a Panic Button....

Erimgard4015d ago

Those...weren't that bad? I just feel like they didn't do enough to make the distinction that this is a brand new console, not an "upgrade" to your Wii.

LOL_WUT4014d ago

The ads were horrible and they reeked of desperation. Lets not try and sugarcoat it ok guys? ;)

PopRocks3594014d ago

OMG CONFLICTING OPINIONS OFFEND ME.

perfectCarbonara4015d ago (Edited 4015d ago )

Haha wow Nintendo is really desperate to be doing ads like this. I especially love how in the third ad the daughter tries to high five her mom and the mom just disses her. Great editing Nintendo.

And it's so poorly acted.

Spookshow4015d ago

Not much need to act, the Wii U is actually tons of fun. This is coming from a gamer that loves Dark Souls (only mentioning DS because apparently a lot of the people here think it's such a benchmark among gamers), and that could prolly kick your rear on most games too.

Respect the big N you n00bs!

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

gold_drake7d ago

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on
