10 Things The PS4 Is Missing At The Moment

"Sony have been rectifying the past with the PS4. Their announcement in February showed a developer more in touch with its developers and audience than ever before. That said, we're not the type to take good news at face value. Being the cynical lot that we are, we're always looking between the lines at what's missing rather than what's there. With that in mind, we bring together ten things that the PS4 is missing at the moment."

I grew 10 of them, just for that purpose.

edit: Oh crap! I chose good timing to grow 10 hands; I'll need all of them to facepalm.

1. An improved User Interface
2. An ergonomic design
3. A decent price
4. A firm release date
5. PS4 Eye software
6. Decent triggers
7. 4K support for games
8. Proper backwards compatability
9. Loads of 3rd party exclusives
10. Used games clarification

Most of these are ridiculous or at least ridiculous for expecting them before E3.

Whitefeather4020d ago

The thing's not even out or even full announced and already criticism?

gameseveryday4020d ago

It's not criticism. It's a list of things that Sony needs to clarify on.

Whitefeather4020d ago

How about we just wait until after E3 to come up with a list of things Sony needs to clarify?

Saigon4020d ago

@Rashid Sayed

did you read the article, because that list only had 2 and maybe a possible that would count as things that are missing. most of the items on the list really just need a little clarification or want to be tested by the author. But the biggest eye sore is that the system wasn't completely revealed. i think by Sony giving us a taste of the system, they can squash the majority of rumors to stop people from speculating and giving out false details of their system. Great move; granted we want more clarification on some things, but the base concept of the system exist and is known.

UnholyLight4020d ago

I 100% agree with the triggers slide. Until I get my hands on a controller I won't really know but it seems they still aren't quite up to snuff. Xbox 360 controller triggers are triggers done perfectly.

itBourne4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@unholylight
Done perfectly for CoD heads. I dont want a full on trigger. Then again i always use r1 to shoot anyhow. I hate change lol. Ppl do use the buttons for other genres as well..

360ICE4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

Agree with Rashid.

And btw, "needs to clarify" does not mean "needs to clarify now". Nor does "10 things PS4 is missing at the moment" mean "10 things the PS4 won't have" any more than it means "10 things we'll see from the PS4". This isn't criticism. It's just a statement of what we have yet to see.

Anyway, I thought Sony had already made official statements regarding used games. PS4 will support.

@UnholyLight
Personally I think the 360 triggers work best with shooters. What I'd like to see the most is concave PS3 triggers.

Toolster4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

Crazy, it's not even out yet so how do you KNOW what's MISSING?

UnholyLight4020d ago

@itBourne,

I am not a CoD head but whatever! I don't see how having Xbox 360 controllers could possibly only be good for shooters. I'd be really pissed off if these triggers on the PS4 controller still don't have enough of a concave surface for them to work well and be comfortable for long periods of play! The PS3 controller seemed like it was gonna be awesome but it was terrible and nobody wants to use R1 in shooters. It just doesn't make sense to be playing a shooter or racing game using a button and not a proper trigger..

Cant appeal to both crowds though as you said, people hate change, yet lots of people want change. You do one thing, people hate it, you do another, people hate it.

No disputing for me that the Xbox 360 controller is just way better for my hands! I just find the DS controller too small for my hands and I hate the symmetrical sticks too:p better get used to it though since Ima get a PS4 day 1

UnwanteDreamz4019d ago

Just buy some real triggers. 4$

I hope they don't go w a huge controler brick like 360. Looks like a Pelican knock off from early 2000.

UnholyLight4019d ago

@UnwantedDreamz

Why don't you contribute something to the discussion that is actually meaningful. How can 4 people agree with your statement when this is what the Pelican controller looks like:

http://isearch.avg.com/imag...

WTF are you talking about "the xbox 360 controller looks like the Pelican controller"

"The thing's not even out or even full announced and already criticism?"

So you guys have a problem with criticism now? Funny how you guys don't mind it when it's about Nintendo or Xbox.

Whitefeather4020d ago

When did I say I support one or the other? I would say the same for xbox if I frequented their articles.

SilentNegotiator4019d ago (Edited 4019d ago )

Oh good comeback. EXCEPT...

1) Nintendo's 8th gen systems are already out. Why can't people criticize a released system?
2) Microsoft hasn't shown ANYTHING of their next system, and their own employees (and supposedly leaked documents) are making it sound very probable that their next Xbox will be online only.

Nice try, though.

ABizzel14019d ago

80% 0f this article is useless, and that's being generous.

Gamer Muzz4019d ago

I honestly felt like this is all stuff Sony should have told us the day of their announcement.
Seriously. Why make a new console announcement when you don't have a release date, price, games, or even console to show?
They said, "hey, we have a console coming out"
Then showed us some tech demos, very little actual development on PS4 games, and a controller.
The best games they showed were Current Gen and some were multiplatform.

Maybe I'm crazy but my thought is that We shouldn't have to wait to see this stuff. Sony should have waited to show it until they had a little more hammered out.

mushroomwig4020d ago

'It isn't enough though'

This is coming from a person who has yet to even hold the controller, let alone use it to play the games with.

knifefight4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

You can't deny that it needs a sales boost though.

I mean, even the Wii-U is selling more than the PS4 right now.

I don't know ANYone who even has a PS4. Haven't even seen it in stores.
Let's face it, the thing needs help.

rextraordinaire4020d ago

Can't tell if you're joking or not... But, maybe you need to know the ps4 is not out yet?

That would explain why you don't know anyone who has one...

...

I sincerely hope you were joking.

JamieLeeC934020d ago

I'm pretty sure he was joking..

darren_poolies4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@rlacorne

I know sarcasm is sometimes hard to get through writing but come one, seriously? Unless you are being sarcastic in which case I fail.

NCAzrael4020d ago

/clap

Bravo, good sir.

Seriously, though, this article is really nitpicking a bunch of stuff that isn't even an issue yet. Pretty much all of these things will be addressed in the coming months. Complaining about this stuff now is like complaining that there hasn't been a trailer for Avengers 2 yet.

And I don't see the problem with the triggers on the controller. You can easily tell from the photo they used in the article that there is a concave curve to the triggers.

KwietStorm_BLM4020d ago

Lmao ..

Cmon you'd have to be completely daft to not know he's joking.

LakerGamerEnthusiast4020d ago

@Rlacorne LOL on top of another LOL.

What have people come too. smh.. :/

here ya go bro. enjoy

1. An improved User Interface
2. An ergonomic design
3. A decent price
4. A firm release date
5. PS4 Eye software
6. Decent triggers
7. 4K support for games
8. Proper backwards compatability
9. Loads of 3rd party exclusives
10. Used games clarification

admiralvic4020d ago

Why does Sony need to clarify used games? According to the Eurogamer interview they confirmed it would, so that doesn't need to be clarified.

Also I don't see why 4k support is listed either. Currently the average (most?) people on this site / will buy a PS4 will not have a 4K TV till far into the future when they're cheaper.

DigitalRaptor4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

1. They showed some early screens of the Interface, so they only need to show the system's OS in depth when it comes to E3. http://www.destructoid.com/...

2. We've already heard positive things about the new DualShock 4 and how its design is more ergonomic. http://www.escapistmagazine... The console itself doesn't need any degree of ergonomics since it sits on your shelf or under your TV.

3. Okay, but I don't think this needs much clarifying, since Sony are not going to make the same mistake in pricing again. It will be decent, and I imagine with multiple SKU or subscription options. http://gamingbolt.com/micha...

4. Sure, but I think November 2013 is a given. Worldwide? yet to be clarified.

5. PS4 Eye software - sure if they're going to bring it out they need some supporting software, but I don't want to hear the arguments of people wanting software that only uses the camera, as we all know how awful that has always been. Hybrid or bust for me.

6. Already confirmed. http://i.minus.com/iqI7LUAh...

7. Already confirmed as not happening. http://www.techradar.com/ne...

8. Not happening and we all know it. http://www.pushsquare.com/n... It will be Gaikai/streaming to a certain degree.

9. Square Enix will be doing something for sure. http://bit.ly/15nmg6F Otherwise this should be confirmed at E3 and the weeks following.

10. Already confirmed as not happening. http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

famoussasjohn4020d ago

7. 4K support for games

Not a lot of people have the type of money laying around just to buy a TV that supports 4K, nor do I see the necessity other than eating up a ton of power.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

RaidenBlack2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

@KyRo
So, by 15 years, you mean Fallout 3 was the last great game Bethesda made?
You don't consider Skyrim a good game, which came out 13 years ago?
I'd consider Fallout 4 a pretty decent game as well. It's Story & RPG elements were a bit downgrade from New Vegas but the exploration and shooting on the other hand, were upgrades.
FO76 was disappointing and Starfield could've been better at launch I'll agree.

Duke198h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

Duke194h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs? Look at what happened to Final Fantasy as a recent example - there is pretty clear FF fatigue setting in because they are now pumping out titles in the franchise every few years. Pumping out more games faster doesn't always make a series better.

There are plenty of options to make new games, not just create more titles in the same universe at a faster pace.

-Foxtrot1h ago

"Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs"

He's literally just told you why

We're waiting like 15 years before a sequel comes out, it's insane

Skyrim came out in 2011, the next game is expected to come out in 2027 at the earliest so that's 16 years apart while Fallout 4 came out in 2015 and might not release until 2031, again 16 years.

We're fine with Bethesda trying new things and doing new IPs like Starfield but adding a new game to the cycle now means a bigger wait. Also Starfield didn't meet most peoples expectations, can you imagine waiting 15 years or so for a sequel and it's disappointing? It would feel even worse because you would have to wait another 15 years to see if they manage to come back from it.

They need to give it to another developer, we don't need main numbered titles but a spin off of Fallout and Elder Scrolls should be cycled in between the long gaps of the main releases.

Once again you are making out people want these games as quick as possible when all we want is a standard development time of at least 4 years or so rather than waiting 15.

mandf5h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor7h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave6h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

Skuletor4h ago

Think about it, they're already bug filled messes on their current schedule, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they rushed things?

-Foxtrot1h ago

@Skuletor

Who's saying to rush the releases? No one is saying that...

People just don't want to be waiting 15 years for a sequel, they aren't working on the game for that long, you do realise that right? The issue isn't coming down to them working on the game and us "rushing them", it's the fact they are working on other games like Starfield now meaning bigger gaps before they even get started on them.

I bet you any more Elder Scrolls VI only entered full development last year when Starfield was finished despite being announced in 2018.

Duke194h ago

I mean you aren't wrong. People are going to complain about anything

isarai6h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris5h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
