Will The Evil Within redefine survival horror?

GameZone's Lance Liebl writes, "Survival horror games are tough to make, mostly because it's tough to scare gamers. The first two Dead Space games managed to pull of some genuine scares, but the third was almost completely void of horror. I can't remember the last time I was scared during a Resident Evil game. For me, and probably for a lot of other people, gore doesn't scare me. Jump scares might startle me for a second, but they don't scare me. What scares me is creepy imagery -- horrifying movement from disfigured creatures and imagery so unsettling that it's the stuff nightmares are made of. And The Evil Within looks to have an abundance of both. "

I haven't seen any gameplay yet but I really do hope so!

They dont have to redefine survival horror, they just need to bring it back

lifesanrpg4018d ago

Very true. But other companies have attempted to do that and have failed. It looks like Bethesda and Tango know what they are doing with this one though.

The Last of Us looks to bring back Survival. This game looks to bring back Survival and Horror! While this looks good in live action without gameplay I will not try to get to excited.

this...

I cna't believe people are exited with no gameplay from a new IP, that so far look like is copying Silent Hill and Saw in term of art and the script is similar to any other generic script, not that is a bad thing..
but this is a game, let's wait for the gameplay to get exited for.. before getting your hearth broken ..

The screenshots make me want to poop my pants. As does the trailer. Lookin good so far!

The Evil Within WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! !!!!!!!!

Paul854018d ago

Thank god it looks like survival horror will make a much needed return

jc485734018d ago (Edited 4018d ago )

the live action kinda takes me back to 'jill sandwich' or even 'master of unlocking.' Then came in Silent Hill.

Update: Honestly, I only played Siren this generation. I didn't even bother touching the other horror games, so I've saved up 'some' just for this game.

Bioshock 1 only has the intro though, would you kindly pick up that radio? :p

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter349d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.
