Battlefield Developer Seeking Intern To Implement Oculus Rift Support In Frostbite

Battlefield series developer DICE is investigating support for the Oculus Rift VR headset with its Frostbite engine, the technology that powers an array of Electronic Arts games, according to a job listing.

Oh god, BF4 with the Rift would be amazing.

Snookies124019d ago

I could just picture seeing a rocket whiz by your head while wearing those, watching a building collapse right in front of you, jumping into a jet in first person view, or playing with friends online and jumping in the passenger seat of a jeep as you ride through crazy warzones.... Ahh, the possibilities...

I was lucky enough to get a quick ~30 second peek at what the Rift is like in action. It seriously feels like you've been transported to a different world. If BF4 shipped with full Rift support, I'll shell out the $300 for the Rift without batting an eyelash.

Same with Bioshock: Infinite.

Snookies124019d ago

@Pandamobile - Wow that's awesome! I've certainly been interested in it. Already heard it can be used with Mirror's Edge and Skyrim... If BF4 gets support, I'll be shelling out the money for one as well.

Instant Matrix experience. My wallet is so ready for that. Anyone remembers The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest on Cartoon Network back when it was a super cool network? I always wished I could experience that life and Oculus Rift looks to be delivering exactly that.

Jets would benefit hardcore from the Rift... no more switching views to try to keep up in a dog fight. It would feel hella authentic.

Sounds cool but how about paying someone with those skills instead?

Cheap assholes

Roll back time to when I did my thesis and I would have jumped at the chance for something like this.

I would get my thesis done as I would have anyway, but I'd also come away with 'triple-A' dev experience, a bunch of contacts in the industry, a foot-in-the-door, and all the knowledge I could soak up from a group of highly talented individuals. It's just a win-win in my mind. Good on DICE for offering up what I see as nothing other than a golden ticket.

As for the commercial side of this, it's looking to be a purely R&D venture. I doubt whatever is produced would find it's way into Frostbite unless it was passed by the team's engine architects.

This is strictly for implementing head tracking... The Rift should offer 3d/2d out of the box for all games.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7343d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt343d ago (Edited 343d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal343d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow343d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal343d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt343d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.

Although I never owned an oculus, I played the demo for this at an electronics store. Pretty impressive in an early goings of VR title.
