As we’ve been talking about the next Xbox, the specter of the “third console curse” has reared its head: The belief that every third home console, gaming hardware manufacturers… well, basically they screw the pooch. But how true is it… and will Microsoft fall prey? We look at the third consoles of several major manufacturers, to see what happened.

People seem to forget that the original Xbox didn't actually do that well anyway, so if anything Microsoft has already beaten the "curse".

Xbox sold slightly more than the Gamecube and that was Nintendos 4th console. For MS first time out they did ok.

I will more than likely not be picking up 720. I did 360, but after Ring Of Death twice I sold my games and picked up PS3..I guess if Microsoft blew my mind I would, but I don't see that happening, and I know it will not be Illumiroom that does that.

Same though if they have some cool exclusives at launch, I might pick it up sooner than later.

Otherwise, I'll do what I did with the ps3 this gen and pick it up 4-5 years into the cycle.

Its a seizure waiting to freaking happen. At first I looked at Illumiroom and I was like wow, and then I looked harder and was like, that is freaking CHEESY,STUPID, Distracting,Gimmick that will only be used more than 10 min by someone on acid.

The problem with the PS3 and N64 were their prices (and game costs as far as N64). If Microsoft avoids going overboard with their pricing they should be ok.
(If they match PS4 specs AND release Kinect 2.0 with it, hopefully they're willing to take a bit more of the costs to match PS4 pricing)

There isn't a curse, most of the time it was companies who won generations in a row and got cocky or let pride get in the way, hopefully Microsoft has a compelling piece of hardware that appeals to a lot of different gamer's.

Cant wait to get some real info on the next Xbox.

I agree with this. The N64 was coming off a super victory with the SNES. Nintendo was a household name and they were cocky. They rejected Sony's offer of a CD (add-on/new system) system because of the piracy issue and decided to go the cartridge route. I'm sure they thought devs would still be on board and didn't worry about Sony releasing the PS1.

Sony came off of a super dominating PS2 era that just like Nintendo, Playstation became a household name. I'm sure they also thought that many people would still flock to the stores and pick up a PS3 for that insane price. (which sadly i did).

Both companies are not making that mistake again and I'm sure MS has done their research and them too won't make that mistake.

the Xbox 360 beat the ps3 (systems shipped doesn't equal systems sold). and let's be clear here. very Xbox had a very clear purpose. the first Xbox was designed to get the Xbox name out. the Xbox 360 was designed to test the crown (it did that and dethroaned the PlayStation). the next Xbox will destroy and embarrass. the whole ps4 is nothing but an Xbox 360 on steroids. the next Xbox will be on PC level. it will have the hardware to match up with the PC (for a little while) but the features will carry it through.

Dee_Cazo, consoles are sold in other countries. Gamers do exist in other countries.

And nobody is putting xbox360 down, nevin1 just stated that microsoft didn't win (over sony... or anybody).

Who won this generation? Who cares. They both are pretty even and great consoles. But if you want to pick a winner based on sales, it's not XBox360.

I always thought the third console curse came after 2 successful (dominant?) generations. It happened to Nintendo. It happened to Sony. Microsoft has yet to have back to back generations ahead of the competition, and they have not dominated anything. Right now, they're neck and neck with Sony, who are both behind Nintendo. Is the curse just supposed to be the third console, period?

They tried that with Windows mobile, look where that got them, what they need is a compelling launch of games, which I suspect will be very difficult this time as Sony based on the recent evidence will not repeat the same mistakes twice.

Either way, from all the rumours that have been circulating like always-online (JUST DEAL WITH IT) to mandatory Kinect (oh no......) - I'm not compelled to throw down what's looking to be AT LEAST $450 for a console like that. Even the PS4 isn't very compelling to me.
Yeah-yeah, super-charged x86 PC architecture. All fine and dandy, but that monster price is a deal breaker. Likely to come in at (also) $450, plus an extra $299 for Vita enhancements, $60-$70 games and controllers? Oi...

I do think that MS will be in a tough position next gen. I loved my xbox and play my 360 daily, but this always on thing has me doing a double take. KI am also not going to accept a $500 price tag next gen ad will wait patiently until the price is dropped and quality titles are available. I have always been the early adopter, but Ive got a crazy backlog that will keep me busy well into next gen. Have fun with the early next-gen stuff gamers! Hope you all buy lots of the next gen stuff so it can be cheap when I get around to it!

There's no such thing as a third console curse. The N64 wasn't Nintendo's third console, the SNES was. I forgot how it was called, but Nintendo's first home console actually came out before the NES, and it had games preinstalled on it, akin to Pong and the like.

theres no chance that ps4 will win this gen....
sorry but from what i seen in that console theres nothing future proof....and the GAMING performance.(coz real performance r alrady doubled with mid lvl pc gpu)..well will be EASLY surpassed BADLY in 12/24 months

and i think durango will put some spice in the console market with the new architecture

Funny PS3 price is like 2 and half times the price of 360 and it sells more than 360 in most parts of the world.

I don't think so. After all, if the rumors about the thing being able to replace a cable box are true, that's pretty sweet. For a lot of people they might get one for the same reason a lot of people picked up a PS2/PS3.

hmmm.... I could pick up a DVD/Bluray player..... or.... I can pick up this moderately priced player that also plays awesome games plus is guaranteed to be possibly the best player on the market. I sold a lot of PS3s at my old job by selling it as a bluray player. Seriously though, why get anything besides a PS3 if you want a bluray player?

That said, the rumored TV compatible features can really open up the market for Microsoft and cement them fully. Even if the software side dwindles(and it won't), they'll still have a device with must have features.

I understand that consoles are sold outside of North America but the fact they are almost 50% of all console sales is something fanboys keep trying to downplay.

So 16 million less sales for Sony in the biggest gaming market is sort of a huge deal.
