‘Assassin’s Creed 4’ developer talks PS4 and Xbox 720 AAA games

Yannis Mallat has commented about the AAA games for the upcoming PS4 and Xbox 720. According to a report by GameSpot on April 11, the CEO of Ubisoft (the company behind the upcoming “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag”) disclosed that the blockbuster titles for the two next-generation consoles will feature bigger production values in addition to offering more values to the consumers.

since when has AAA become a budget size and not a game rating?

LightofDarkness4020d ago

That's always what it meant. AAA games are those that launch like events, with huge advertising budgets and partnerships with various retailers (non-gaming, even) and numerous hype building previews and features all over the web.

AAA never really rated the quality of the finished product, but they're often assumed to be above a certain mark due to the relatively large budget and production values.

die_fiend4020d ago

Since ever. What an embarrassing level of ignorance you've just displayed.

Do you think indie games were created by Harrison Ford?

KingPin4019d ago

hmmm then to think Lair, Too Human and HAZE are all "AAA" games.

Mustang300C20124020d ago

Wow,

It has always meant budget size.

Sevir4020d ago

Of the lowest form of primitive level of ignorance.

The term AAA originated with the Movie industry to describe the scale, ambition, and production value of a film with its enormous budget. Gaming industry Adopted the Term when the budget of game development grew as well as the expectations for a games market performance.

Ignorant fanboys twisted the term like everything else they skew into what it is now, a term used to describe a super hyped game largely attached to console exclusives if they score 90% higher on game rating sites!

humbleopinion4019d ago

KingPin, as you can see here many ignorant people here don't have any problem flashing out their ignorance level while bashing you at the same time.

But the term they actually refer to while spouting out nonsense (especially Sevir) is a "blockbuster". AAA was never a movie industry term and you won't commonly hear the term "AAA movie"

AAA is infact coming from the investment world and represents bond credit rating - ranigng from AAA to D. So a bond with AAA rating means a quality investment guaranteed to turn profit and (hopefully) never fail.

The videogame industry borrowed this definition, but it later turned into a meaningless buzzword when every 2nd tier developer of claims they are making a AAA game in order to relax investors and obtain bigger funds from publishers. But in the real world you can't really set the rating of your own products: it's up for the investment firms to analyze it.

What's more, because rating is only applied to analytic estimations, you can't really call a game that was already released a AAA game: this has no actual meaning because we are already at a state where we know if the game made money or not. But theoretically speaking we can estimate if the next Halo, the next Mario, the next Killzone, the next Final Fantasy - hell even the next Angry Birds - will be AAA games or not, and invest accordingly (assuming we were investors, that is).

LightofDarkness4019d ago

@humble:

Well done pulling that out of your ass. It almost sounds like you know what you're talking about.

There is positively 0 evidence to support what you've just said. The widely accepted definition is the one I gave above; developers and more would give you the same basic idea.

"There is positively 0 evidence to support what you've just said. The widely accepted definition is the one I gave above"

0 evidence? Try Googling "AAA definition" before making a fool out of yoursilf. You'll find what I just said in the first link in google.

Have a good luck though finding your own made up definition for AAA (protip: google "blockbuster definition" if you want to save yourself sometime).

Assassin Creed 4 will be played on my next gen xbox for sure.

nirwanda4020d ago

I probably won't buy this game on either console unless it proves itself and I haven't fully decided which next generation console to buy yet until E3.

NobleTeam3604019d ago

Funny how you get 18 disagree's when it says Xbox but the other guy gets 24 agree's when he says PS4.

Belking4019d ago

yea, I know. We call them haters.

Jaqen_Hghar4020d ago

A man will wait for reviews, but AC4 will be on his PS4 if he does get it for shinier graphics and better framerate (even if $10 more)

hesido4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

I hope games on the PS4 don't cost more. After all, it is supposed to be easier to develop for. Tho it is likely the publishers may try such a pricing model.

nirwanda4020d ago

The game engine for the ps3 version will just be an upgraded version of pervious versions so most of the development has been done so the ps3 version will be cheeper or the ps4 version will just be a rehash of the pc version

Bonerboy4019d ago

Man, people still want to play AC games? Its way up there on the CoD "been there done that" list. Oh my mistake...its gotten so stale they need to sell it by including whores.

Every industry has these issues

Some companies I’ve worked for were great and some were toxic as hell (UPS when I was a teenager was extremely toxic and I have heard it still is) It all starts at the top. They either hold people accountable , set standards and treat people with respect or the crap rolls downhill.

Funny how all the clickhate was trying to spin that it was "struggling" to reach these very numbers.

Jin_Sakai47d ago

They have less than 1 million players but some people are playing 4 hours a day. That’s your record engagement.

thorstein46d ago

😢 😭 people are playing a game I hate and having fun. Why aren't they hating the game as much as I do?

GamerRN47d ago

It's an absolutely terrible game....

boing147d ago

I don't believe it one bit. Second highest to what? Any numbers?

ChasterMies47d ago

“Ubisoft announced that ‘Skull and Bones’ boasts over four hours of average daily playtime.”

So the few people playing it are spending a lot of time playing it. But there aren’t enough whales to feed this fleet. This game will die like so many other live service money grabs that came before it.

anast47d ago

This includes free trials.

shinoff218347d ago

I've read that same thing. Ifbtruebits not really impressive. Also maybe I missed it but I didn't catch any numbers in the article. Lastly what I did read felt more like an advertisement as if the site mightve caught a couple dollars from the publisher.

anast47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

People are saying it's around 850k across all platforms and free trials. To put it into perspective Helldivers 2 has around 360k 24hr peak on Steam and another 300k at least on PS5, and no free trials.

Aloymetal46d ago

Most likely. I tried the demo on PS5 and it looks so blurry I was shocked, crappy graphics. I thought for a minute I was playing the wrong version (PS4) but then again most games on PS4 look a 1000x better than this not to mention it's a grinding galore. F that.
