PCGamer- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first look: slaying giants in CD Projekt RED’s icy open world RPG

PCG:The Witcher 3 is the final entry in Geralt’s saga. Freed from the political obligations and baffling amnesia that bound him in The Witcher 2, he’s searching for lost loved ones in a world on the brink of a calamitous war. But for all his vagrant tendencies, Geralt has a knack for becoming embroiled in the squabbles of the rich and powerful. He’s responding to a summons from Jarl Crach, who needs help with a personal matter.

It just sounds incredible. This and Thief are my two most wanted at the moment.

dedicatedtogamers4021d ago

I'm just finishing up another playthrough of Witcher 2 on PC. Man, the game is just...so good. Everyone who has the option should at least try this game and play past the intro chapter.

Can't wait for Witcher 3 and also Cyberpunk. Both games are gonna be legendary.

Kinger89384021d ago

I keep meaning to replay to make the other choice ;)

OMG I CAN'T WAIT

-Huge open world map
-No loading screens
-Dynamic encounters
-96 motion captured combat moves from the 20 in witcher 2
-An end to the endless roll parrying
-Travel anywhere in the map
-Beasts and npcs of all kinds

The year 2014 is going to be heavenly.

I swear I have never been so hyped for a game like this one. this is the ultimate pre-order for me.

I love love love open world games and Cd project never disappointed me in any of their games(despite them not being open world).

People say Rockstar would set standards on open world games come GTAV(pre-ordered :D) but I wouldn't pass that by CD REd Project.

totally with you man

the witcher 1 and 2 are the best rpg's in 10 years!

Could someone elaborate on how The Witcher series plays, I don't have a 360 nor a PC to run it, but I'm big RPG fan and curious if it plays like a 3rd person Skyrim, or more so Dragon Age.

US8F4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

I promise you that no one would do it justice by just explaining to you. You need to go check youtube out on gameplay videos and you will understand my claim.

It is so very good, the both of them, and the transitions of gameplay from the 1st to 2nd to the 3rd, is so vast, you would love every second of it. Ofcourse the third did not come out yet, but just by reading what they have in store for us, it says alot.

They will deliver, and deliver hard they will!. Here a good gameplay video to get you into it :).

listenkids4021d ago

Looks good, i'll eventually get a play through - for now it'll have to be Witcher 3 ( ps4 ). In terms of customization, is there any? For the character and is there a wide variety of items for armour.

Cheers.

greatcrusader444020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

I don't know if I'd say a wide variety of armor, if compared to say Skyrim, but there's def enough customization to make someone happy, there are seperate armor pieces, that you can either find or make with schematics, same with the swords, and you can change your hairstyle.

Like most rpgs you lvl up and there are 4 skill trees you can lvl up in, first being tutorial which will be the one you'll be putting points in first, then after lvl 5 you can put points in swordplay, magic, and traps. Regardless of which one you spec the most in, you'll mostly be using your swords, but from experience some spells are vital to spec in, especially on higher difficulties.

stuntman_mike4020d ago

also CD project red are excellent for giving you loads of extra content and DLC all in the price of the original product. I hope they don't change that.

stuntman_mike4020d ago

i hope the combat is a bit more fluid in the 3rd game. i liked the combat of the second game, but it took a little while for the attack animations to finish.

i have been meaning to go back and play it again, just to get me ready for this one.

Pintheshadows4020d ago

It has become my go to game in a way as the shortcut on my desktop is always just there staring at me. Next thing I know it is five hours later.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave10d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan10d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name34d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno34d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno34d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure34d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
