Survey shows half of U.S. teen gamers intend to buy PS4 or Xbox 720

XMNR: new survey we ran across Thursday from analysts at Piper Jaffray & Co. looks at the spending habit of teenagers in the United States showed some surprising indicators for the next-gen Playstation 4 and Xbox (aka Xbox 720) consoles that may help get the games industry out of its current sales funk.

That's not what a "real gamer" means.
Whether you're biased or not, your enjoyment of a game is dependent on more than one factor.

You don't need to buy every system and system exclusive game to be a gamer.
What you guys are saying is that even if someone is a dedicated gamer and plays dozens or hundreds of core games to completion IS NOT a real gamer unless he can afford the other system and/or enjoy specific exclusive games from that system?

I'm not a teen, but I have a lot of gaming friends here in the states and I'd say around 50% of them will get a new console this year, I know I am, maybe two, depends on what these things look like, cost, and the games.

When I get a PS4, I won't need an X720, with it's only 2 or 3 exclusives. That would be a waste of money. I hope they can deal with it. (yes I said it, I'll never let it go LOL)

while that was an interesting survey, the sample size is too small to be defining but it does paint a promising next gen future

in the US its roughly 21,514,000 teens ages 15-19 teens and am sure the gaming teen sum from all those teens are in the millions....survey sample was 3400 which is about .016% of all teens

It's nearly physically and financially impossible to do really large sample sizes. This one probably has a margin of error in the 3-4% range (guessing since I don't know the particulars such as the confidence interval) which is pretty decent for a survey.

I've seen surveys with much smaller sample sizes (hundreds) touted as evidence for political movements, etc. Frankly, I'm ok with this one.

no that is not true the most investment in most survey is time trust me i do them a lot here in Belize.

but to my point of the sample size i was talking about the conclusion this article uses in the title and i quote: "Survey shows half of U.S. teen gamers intend to buy PS4 or Xbox 720" this by far is invalid because the sample size is too small to draw such a conclusion plus margin of error has to be added to the final results for accuracy.

They can't go around getting sample sizes that represent 70-80% of a population. For all intended purposes, that's how surveys work.

I got a 360(launch)/PS3(2011). That combo worked for me depending on things play out I will probably go into next gen with the same combo.

WiiU I always have a few friends who will buy all Nintendos stuff so ill play it at their house.

I wish I was still a teen LOL...But I intend to own one or the other to start around the holiday season. So naturally im paying attention to all the tidbits about both systems as they come out. Its a safe bet either way as far as 90% of the future games. So its whats left and pricing that will help me decide.

Yea this information is based on what people want, not what they will get. There's not enough info about the consoles yet to say whether I'll get one or wait, or not get either at all

To be honest, with all these rumours about the 720 being blown way out of apportion... I'm surprised half are even considering it. That just goes to show that regardless of what Sony fan boys claim, plenty of people still want Microsoft next console.

Imagine if it didn't have the bad press how many people would want it. Well unlike some I will most defiantly pick up both, I just can't miss out on what one has to offer over the other.

The thing is, only those who really follow the game industry are aware of the Xbox 720 rumors. The vast majority of the public will be completely unaware of what the console may or may not have until it is officially announced.

The thing that killed games revenue over the last few years was an 8 year lifecylce. Next generation is long overdue. Hopefully console makers will realize that 5 or 6 years is more than enough.
