Microsoft Should Quit The Gaming Biz

Eskimo Press: The PlayStation 3 has an impressive roster of exclusive games for 2013. We've already seen a brand spanking new God of War game, and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and Quantic Dream's Two Souls: Beyond. Not only are these AAA titles, they are also very innovative and fresh games. Let's not us forget that Sony have recently announced the PlayStation 4, and along with that comes a handful of killer looking launch titles, Killzone Shadow Fall, inFamous: Second Son, and Knack. Microsoft, on the other hand, don't seem at all concerned with their lack of in-house, first party, studios or exclusives, and innovative, games. So why does Microsoft even bother sticking around?

I can see where you're coming from and i agree to an extent, for an example, the Wii U does nothing for me personally, but i wouldn't want the console to "fail" if other enjoy it just because i'm not a fan.

What i WOULD be concerned about though, is if the rumours that are going around about Microsoft are true (online activation to boot up games, always online DRM, no used games etc), then i'd be seriously worried about bad habits rubbing off and effecting other platforms and titles too.

For example, Sony have told us they they won't be blocking used games and have no "always on" DRM, but if the NextBox goes down that road and they sell neck and neck at 70+ million each again, what's to stop the likes of EA, Activision, Ubisoft or whoever else from thinking "Hey, we have the system in place that could block these games, and by Sony/Nintendo not having these measure we lose out a little to used games, why don't we just carry over the DRM via softare?".

That's MY biggest concern at least, and if Microsoft bring that kind of business practice about on the mass scale and pass it off as acceptable to it's consumers then hell yes i'd rather they dropped out and just left Sony and Nintendo to do their thing a hold off this kind of DRM till at the very least everyones internet is capable of handling it on a global scale.

My internet is prone to practically slowing to a stop late at night, connection can often drop and my speeds aren't great in the first place.

If MS follow Sony's road of being developer and consumer friendly? fine. If they want to go draconian on us, i'd happily see them the f*ck out the door and i'm a "real gamer".

Well said Snookies - 'tis deffo a crazy article (well designed hardware at launch - haha!) Microsoft has numerous enthusiastic gaming fans for a good reason. They're not my cup of tea personally (I don't mind Halo, but I can get most of the rest of the 360 'exclusives' I want to play on Steam ;)), but suggesting Microsoft should back away and leave its fans is a bit silly.

One thing MS does very well is co-op in their exclusive titles. Gears, Halo, Fable... all have easy to use, fun co-op. Sure they piss me off with some things, but all platforms do. I like the 4 platform model (PC, PS3, WiiU and XBOX). I don't know if more consoles/platforms would be beneficial for first party exclusives since each would have less money to play with. But I like the balance we have now.

Let's face it, MS supported indies by *still* being the only one after many years of having the platform to sell indie games for less than $100 a year!

So how is that supporting indie gamers?

I actually feel bad for Gamer Girl because she actually wrote a pretty good article that pointed out true facts. i feel bad because just going over and reading a few of the comments already posted on the article shows a one-sided argument. The fact is these people seem to not know anything but they are in full defense. One person said that Sony has great contracts with third party studios, and to me, from the way it was written,it seem to say Sony does not have any studios just great contracts with third party developers and Nintendo has all the first party studios.

IMHO, i think what worries me more about MS not have more studios is that in the future when a genre dies down, who is going to produce the next great hit. I can't use Nintendo as an example because their first party studios make almost the same games all the time; now if you look at Sony's first party studios you will see that Sony developers progress to different games each console generation. One Example is Naughty Dog. First Game, Crash Bandicot, then Jak and Dexter, now Uncharted, future ???. The point is that they progress. Each of those games were different style of games that innovated the industry.

MS does not have developers like that and in my opinion need to start going after more Inde developers and not already established developers. 'Bring something different' to the game.

Yeah, it makes no sense whatsoever. Everybody needs competition because it will, at least, attempt to keep you honest and pushing for a better product. That, in turn, is better for the consumer and we win at the end.

If MS does something to piss off its base then their costumers will go elsewhere (and the same goes for Sony or Nintendo). They don't have a monopoly in the video game industry and consumers have other choices. So if the do something wrong then they are going to have to step their game up and fix it.

People hate to admit it but both MS and Sony(even Nintendo) have pushed each other to give us(gamers) a better product. Whether or not you think the criticism is only coming from PS3 fans, there are concerns coming from all sides about realistic issues - from biased gamers and also none biased sources. The notion that it's only Sony fans criticising is as ridiculous as the ones that think no MS hate or Sony fanboyism exists largely outside of N4G.

As of PS Vita and PS4, not so much. They're even loaning out PS4 dev kits.

Being open and interested in ideas and concepts and willing to contribute to the budget. Fostering indie developers. I haven't heard much about that with MS, but ever heard of Sony's pub fund? Sony actually reach out to indies and support them in ways that isn't just letting you make games for free.

Sony's attitude that has permeated this gen going into next absolutely has indies in mind. And you'd have to be in bed with MS not to notice. Sony has removed levels of concept approval for devs even those who want to make more ambitious content.

They are talked about in this way, because developers have been expressing themselves about MS's policies for years.

The competition does things differently than MS. Once your game is out the gate, MS has been criticized for doing nothing further, and that these games are considered failures because MS make no effort to promote them on the marketplace. This problem doesn't exist so much on PSN and across the web, and it certainly doesn't happen on Steam.

well as a true gamer i honestly believe in this case it wouldnt be such a bad idea.Last gen 3 third party devs had to settle for less due to the the bluray-less xbox 360 which made them result to porting over games to the ps3 and we all know that lead to the games to be more of a lack luster experience.

Yes I've been around this site for a long time, just not so much lately. I also have had this conversation before about the "doom n gloom" articles toward sony/ps3, actually posted before sort of a challenge that for every negative ps3 type news there was also similar xbox negativity, its just perception, those who overly favor/emotionaly loyal to one brand always notice the negativity directed toward that particular brand but generally speaking since they tend to agree that brand A is great while brand B is not so great then they don't either notice or don't perceive the negative news for brand B as much....and yes this site although great for the overwhelming amount of gaming news in one place is indeed sonyland because you would have to be blind not to notice the heavy biased for sony and against Microsoft here both in the postings and definitely in the comments=unbalanced to say the least, but that's fine every thing has its pro's and con's, honestly I find it a comedic break from the norm, keep it coming!

No, I was talking about the gaming media, then further on in my post I'm referring to the membership of n4g, so yes there are false perceptions but if you take the time to actually examine things then you can verify the validity of any perception.

Therefore, I'm not saying Microsoft receives more hate from media outlets and the general public, actually what I said is that they both have had their fare share of negative news press, contrary to what I've frequently seen stated here on n4g, I elaborated by saying in prior posts that I've actually had many prior conversations where I could point out just as much negative press posted here on n4g related to 360/microsoft as anyone could post for ps3/sony. What incentive was there to work harder as a dev when the bar was as low as possible and baseline rewards were so plentiful? I don't think the writer of this article is considering how bad this sounds to both Sony and Microsoft fans.

- Without Xbox, the PSN would probably be a whole gen behind, if not totally missing.

- Epic, along with the 360, put graphics on the map with Gears of War, upping the ante for not only every console now and to come, but that's also the point when the PC games stepped-up their game, because no game was quite like Gears.

- Halo was not only a trend setter, but a first-person paragon. Just about every FPS game after Halo stole a few core mechanics from that game.

- Microsoft ripped previously exclusive games from the PS2, and a whole lot more from the PS3, which forces Sony to develop deals and in-house exclusive games for the PS3 and PS4 that cover games that were previously exclusive to the PS3 (Eight Days for GTA, for example)

Microsoft and Sony compliment each other, and such rivalries are necessary for the cultivation of consoles, games, and technologies, and it's always been that way.

I remember back in the mid 90's when M$ was trying to get Nintendo online over in Japan and then trying to help Sega by offering them an OS for the dreamcast which they refused like idiots. Yeah the M$ box is meant to be more than a game machine, but I'm glad bc if I'm paying $400 or $500+ then I want something that fulfills all of my entertainment wants and my girlfriend's causul gaming needs. Microsoft has been advancing the console's purpose of a full entertainment device since the Xbox while everyone else sat idle.

Microsoft just had the largest tech boost on the American market, followed by Intel. Windows 8 is actually increasing M$ market share, as the touch portion of the PC market is now growing. Windows is now part of the tablet market. That is an expansion they did not have before. There only needs to be damage control where there is damage. M$ has not release or even revealed a console yet. So what exactly was damaged that needs to be controlled?

If M$ spends time and money chasing rumors, they would just keep creating more. Waste of money and time. When the next Xbox is revealed, they will have to deal with most these rumors then.

The idea that competition breeds innovation is one of the great overly used and often untrue boardroom quotes. Sony ruled the last generation without equal and they never stopped innovating and trying new things with the PS2. They continually pushed that little black box to the limits.

This generation so called competition has only brought about poorer gaming through wasted resources and attempts by developers to create something that never existed before - console parity.

As for 1st party titles...well...draw your own conclusion over who completely blanked the competition with genre busting and bending offerings.

1. GAMERS are speaking up. You see it everywhere, even all over this site, and it's not just "Sony fanboys" who are speaking out. I'm certain you know this, but the majority almost NEVER take action, at least not until it's too late, or almost too late; most of the gamers out there won't say or do anything until the industry is in crash mode, and by then, what good will it do? We core gamers are outnumbered massively by casuals, yet what you propose would only work if the casuals- who don't care about this stuff nearly as much as we do- stand up and take action. And what are the odds of that happening, rather than them moving on to something else?

2. It could benefit consumers by eliminating a company whose practices have been shown to be, at times, anti-consumer. Additionally, they've also shown their willingness to ignore the very segment they should be catering and marketing to, the very same segment that's made them the gaming powerhouse that they currently are. ANY industry, especially one as consumer-centric as gaming, can do without a company that's only out to make money.

(Note: I said ONLY out to make money. All the companies are out to make money, but Sony and Nintendo seem to care more about the people they sell to. Microsoft, on the other hand, appears ready and willing to drop their core like a bad habit if there's more money to be made elsewhere.)

3. I don't think even the author expects them to just up and quit right now, even if it's what she desires. More likely, the hope is that, should the rumors turn out to be true, and should they combine with their current non-gaming-centric policies, Microsoft's gaming division will suffer enough losses that they'll back out.

4. There are other companies that would take Microsoft's place, just as they took someone else's place. Until then, it could be just two companies. At least they'd be two who care, as, in my opinion, the only thing Microsoft cares about is their bottom line. With Valve on the cusp, perhaps a third company who cares will join the race.

1. Both the casual and hardcore markets CAN coexist. The 720 supposedly becoming a more casual oriented console won't stop games like Infamous, Uncharted, Beyond, and Bioshock from coming out. You make it seem like the casuals will somehow box the hardcore out of the market and suddenly all support will shift away from us. The fact that these suped up $600+ graphics cards are being released every year proves that the hardcore market is intact and will remain intact for years to come.

Sony wouldn't have bothered making the PS4 16X more powerful than the PS3 if they weren't serious about the hardcore market.

2. Every company is anti-consumer in its own way. Sony removing BC/Linux compatibility from PS3s IS anti-consumer. Sony not putting a DECENT browser in the PS3 IS anti-consumer. Sony overcharging for Vita memory cards IS anti-consumer. Saying you'll want to work TWO jobs to buy a PS3 IS anti-consumer

3. Okay, then lets what for it to happen. If Microsoft is boxed out, then the gamers should decide their fate. This is very unlikely though as the Xbox brand has LEGIONS of fans.

4. I'll give you that. I would personally prefer to see Valve in Microsoft's place as they would provide a much stronger competition to Sony. Both companies strive to provide the best hardcore game experiences at the best value.

Its not about who makes the most profit; how exactly am i as a gamer suppose to just settle for clones and mediocreness because of some company making a profit? That tells me you are just thinking like a business man and not a gamer.

The article is about the companies who are contributing and largely investing in a wide range games. This industry is about the games and as this article points out, if you arent in it to make and distribute said games, then what are you in this busines for? its like a pharmacy promoting prepscription and not distributing any or a car company buying commercial deals to keep selling the same cars year after year without producing any new models or types of cars. Then whats the point of having you around? worse, why should we care?

You mentioned all those studios that were shut down, but you forget to mention the ones shut by MS themselves. Yes, Sony didnt make the money the other two made and we get it they arent making xbox live money because we also know MS has had its share of flops as well. And while Sony is guilty of shutting down some studios, i can tell you that has not stop them from funding/making and distributing new games. Regardless of the sales or profits all a gamer should really care about are the games and the experiences that come with them. I am no share holder, i dont have any stocks in any of these companies. But Gt, God of war, uncharted, little bigplanet all sell pretty well, but thats not what i play on my console.

MS makes smart decisions business wise with their marketing schemes and therefore tend to sell their product well, fair enough. Its a shame this is all they seem to offer, instead of you know actually contributing with some content. Want an entertainment box? build yourself a pc and you will be better off.

In all fairness i will say this article is unfair in the sense that we really dont know what MS is up to with their next gen console; chances are they could be working on some new ips. But as of now all we got are these rumors going around.

Microsoft make great games like Halo for example. They release Halo 3 the "final Halo" it sells millions. Gamers beg them for more, The release Reach the "swan song" for Bungie.

Gamers demand more, Microsoft build a new story through books, anime and comics. Then with the new mythology they release a new trilogy that the fans demanded.

People say MS are just milking the franchise and basing there games of nothing. They aren't, you only have to look at the huge amounts of extra material they release to help build they're franchises to appease the fans.

No other company give the fans of INDIVIDUAL franchises more content then Microsoft.

Sony on the other hand release a bunch of exclusives in one year. One or two of them will sell well and the others will flop and the developers future will be in question.

I think MS closed more studios they possessed than any under publisher under their time-frame I wouldnt talk about jobs and contribution. Also most of the studios Sony closes the jobs are kept and most of the devs are relocated to other studios that are doing well. Also Superbot was created solely for the creation of PS Allstars. The only jobs MS has been saving is the marketing teams they hire that they spend millions upon millions on. Also as gamers why should we care about the sole money aspect? We dont insert money into our consoles we insert games and want to play and enjoy them and if the company you spent your money on isnt contributing to the reason you actually bought your console why should we as gamers care about them in return?

P.S MS closed down Carbonated Games, FASA Studio, Ensemble Studio, Aces Studio and last year downsized Microsoft Studios Vancouver so before you go up and defending a company should know more about em first.

First I inserted plenty of games in my 360, nevermind that there are lots of great multiplats but why do people talk as if 360 didn't release any great exclusives over the last year while sony has released tons, just not true unless YOU believe only the games YOU like are worthy of being played.

Second why not list the studio's sony has closed, and if you knew anything about Microsoft studio closings you would know that many working at those studios were also reassigned to other studios just like you spoke of sony, but again why would you do that, that would be a balanced outlook and of course that's not your goal.

It's a GOOD thing that no single gaming company monopolizes the market. The competition that they provide each other with is an important factor in driving them to improve their performance and content. They all strive to try and gain the upper hand, but inevitably their competition catches up and sometimes surpasses them. It's this cycle that allows for the most significant advancements in the gaming world.

Imagine if one company did manage to completely wipe out the competition and monopolize the industry. That company would then have no reason to improve, because they do not need to worry about losing customers to rival corporations. After all, there would none.

Go back and look at those sales of every exclusive including the sports games before EA came on board. They were losing money.
The whole exclusive crap is just another excuse to whine. Lets be clear on something. MS and Sony have closed studios they owned for a reason. Because the games are not turning a profit. MS decided what Sony recently in the years recognized is that the risk is too great with the amount of in-house studios. Go look at all the exclusives from this generation and see what are at the top in performance and we see why MS focused more on exclusive content than full on budget. Look at the list of games on Live and tell me what is the issue? Games are being played and played at a large volume on the 360. I don't have issues with exclusives at all. I just couldn't care less that the game is exclusive. There is a reason consumers are still using and buying the 360 AND paying for Live. Dealwitit!

From a gamer perspective they all should. The industry is losing interest in those that value games the most. They focus too much on everyone else.

Great games are still keeping me happy yet now it comes at a price. I can no longer own any digital game or add on without having an account. Nor can game saves be reliably backed up (unless through a paid service like Plus). Games I grew up with seem to be changing to appeal to another age or group. Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, new voice for Snake, and other key experiences seem to be purposefully ripped away just for the sake of either trying to get their core audience to leave, to get a new audience, or both.

Data is way too controlled and unreliable that the terms "update", "ownership", and "convienance" are true only in it's intent but not in it's practice. That I can only keep a game next gen if the service allows it or if the current gen continues to stay online. For the original Xbox Live should have been the rude awakening for gamers to see...it appears the lesson may not be realized until the end of this generation. The true power of online and software control will be realized the day when they take it from you personally. That will be the day you will see the true worth of the digital format.

I love Sony. Not afraid to admit it. However I'm no blind fanboy either. I remember some of my favorite gaming moments on Xbox 1 and Xbox 360. True, Microsoft have faltered greatly as of late I feel. But whatever route they may take in the future, I will never forget my time playing the original halo, crimson skies, project Gotham racing, gears of war 1, and others. So while Xbox may not be my fav platform, I would be saddened to them go away completely.

Look, you just proved my point. While halo is great and gets a huge marketing bliss like no other game in the industry which also help drive its sales; that doesnt mean thats all its gamers demand out of their box.

GT5 sold over 10 million even on the heels of kinects launch which was pushed by opra among other paid celeds and a new call of duty release at the time. Still Sony went out and invested in different games when they could have simply release another GT game the following year.

I am not hating on MS, ive own every xbox console released ironically for halo games because they are fun. But ive also own a snes and ps and have noticed halo isnt the only game to be had neither is GT or COD if we want to go there.

Sony makes a profit in this business, because if they didnt they most likely wouldn't be doing this. MS makes money of xbox live and thats great for them, its a great service, but i don't care about those stats as i am not an MS share holder. I am just a six pack joe who bought a gaming console to play a variety of great games, not sales or who has profited more of marketig deals and online services.

PlayStation Plus makes Sony a profit, maybe nowhere near what live makes MS, but a profit noneoftheless. And from the looks of it, its a great value for your money and helps companies sell games that perhaps didnt or couldn't get that reception they were looking for. Its good business practice like the one valve has going with steam, healthy for the consumer.

The Xbox brand has become kind of a niche except to Americans, ironically because it's such an everyman product.

Not popular in Japan, not quite as popular in Europe as whole as Sony and Nintendo.

Offering a little bit of both worlds - hardcore games and motion control games.

I think that Microsoft have a broad idea that gaming is good but they seem to squander it when it matters. Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts sounds a clever idea but it's perhaps too clever. Not everyone wants to be constructing vehicles. And whilst Sony has its fair share of unnecessary sequels they have so many that at least a few are going to hit a bullseye with some buyers.

I hope that the next Xbox is a very interesting console because they are the most unexpected in a way.
With Sony you know that you'll get cinematic type games and surrealistic indie games. With Nintendo that you'll get mainly sequels. With Microsoft they've been such a sleeping giant for so long they must have some really interesting games up their sleeve. Personally i don't think Microsoft should flat out quit the gaming industry but i also think that the industry is not doing as well with Microsoft being the industry leader.

Every month/year we see the downward trend of game sales even with the intense marketing by Microsoft. Take for example a game like Tomb Raider which was marketed heavily by Microsoft & still Squarenix despite selling 3 million considered it a failure.

I also think that the heavily influenced FPS market of the Xbox 360 is not helping things. In the past a much greater variety of games sold well but it seems nowadays if your game is not a FPS your game will under perform.

Microsoft has done really well for THEMSELVES...i stress for themselves cause with them as the industry leader but like i said they are not doing everything they can to lead the game business forward. People do yourself a favor and read vgleaks today, new leak is Durango will not require always online and will support used games. There will be a second console mini 360 that requires always on connection and allows backwards compatibility. Now stop jumping to conclusions, god.

the article is total flamebait, but to me, the one thing that pisses me more than having a feature is to have it only to be removed further down the line.

I was mad at SONY when they removed OtherOS even though i ever used it, but i was even madder at M$ for killing XNA.
