Why Yakuza 5 needs to come to the West (and how you can help)

Leon from Plus XP writes "I didn’t get into the Yakuza series until after the release of the most recent main entry in the series, Yakuza 4. It’s always a series I’d seen in stores, but rarely one I’d hear other people talking about. Perhaps it’s due to the lack of marketing, or perhaps it’s because the series is a PlayStation exclusive – with many people owning Xbox 360′s as their ‘main’ console – but whatever the reason, I was extremely glad that I gave it a shot. Yakuza 4 was a joy to play – a tale of four individuals whose paths intertwined in the city of Kamurocho, as police and Yakuza groups tussled over money and power. There wasn’t a single plot between the four lead characters that I didn’t enjoy, and how they all connected really inspired me – delving into all aspects of Kamurocho – the Yakuza clans, the lives of it’s citizens, it’s seedy underbelly and the inner-workings of it’s police force."

man, Yakuza is one of my most fav series and I was really anticipating the Yakuza 5 release this year. I was anxious to play as Haruka and see what the plot was all about. Return to Kamurocho and kick some major ass with the always bad ass old man Kazuma!

People really don't know what they are missing on by ignoring this amazing series. Particularly if you're a Shenmue fan or a weaboo anime fan Japan freak. If you can play garbage like Neptunia, Dynasty Warrior and Miku Project Diva then you'll love the Yakuza series because there so much more awesomeness packed in it!

But what's done is done. Sega are stupidly stubborn and if they said that they are not gonna localize it then that is it. Vanquish is no more, Valkyria Chronicles is no more, Bayonetta went Wii U exclusive and Yakuza 5 will not be localized because Dead Souls flopped real bad. ;(

maybe people need to do a little more checking before they buy games rather than having to wait for ads to be thrown at them. Whenever I hear people say that "it's probably for lack of marketing," I just can't help but feel a little annoyed because Sega did do some marketing in the past and they did a little bit with Yakuza 3, but game still didn't sell well in the end despite the efforts. Either they are not interested, don't know anything about it, or simply don't care. I don't get how people think because they aren't really, which is really disappointing. How many people do visit gaming sites? out of billions of people that live in America. Yes, A-M-E-R-I-C-A. Americans USED to care, but I really don't know what happened to their interests. It kinda just died out. JRPGs are not as hot as they used to be or even Japanese games in general.

@wishingW3L,
Actually, I don't believe a localization has been ruled out. From all that I've read, there doesn't seem to be any confirmation one way or the other. Since Sega is doing some internal restructuring, things could go one way or the other. I think that if we consider how it took over a year beyond their Japan release for the last several Yakuza games to get localized, it's plausible that if it is getting released in other countries that it might not be until March of next year. That seems to be when they plan the Yakuza releases. I have my fingers crossed for this.

@jc48573
While I completely agree with the majority of what you're saying, there's a couple things to keep in mind with what you mentioned about Yakuza 3. When they released it, Sega really only had a very small amount of marketing done. I was a huge fan of the first two games and had pre-ordered the third, so I was keeping a close eye on everything at the time. Now, I live in the US so it might be different elsewhere, but through all my perusing here, there weren't any commercials I had seen on typical networks that have game commercials, at the time I was subscribed to GameInformer and I didn't see any ads in there (maybe in other mags, but not in that one), and through all the game sites I went to there was only minimal online advertising.

The main problem however wasn't solely the marketing, but deciding to release it right in between two rather large games, Final Fantasy XIII and God of War 3. By choosing this release window (the same day as FFXIII and a week from God of War), they were seriously hurting their potential sales due to overshadowing. Yakuza 4 was a bit better in these departments, but still rough (Dragon Age 2 and Homefront that time around). I mean, you certainly are correct with the bit about people not caring as much now, and that's disappointing, but I can't tell you how many of my friends that are pretty serious gamers that knew nothing about the Yakuza series due largely to marketing and would have otherwise loved the series. And working off your point there, it's hard to introduce them to it because often-times series that don't have some sort of foothold in game media don't garner the same theoretical "respect" that others would, just because of how it's presented.

Anyway, that's just my experiences. I love the Yakuza games (even Dead Souls which I bought day-one) and as I mentioned in many other articles, this is possibly my overall favorite game series out there. It would be an immense shame if they didn't figure something out for a western release for 5 and the HD remasters of 1 and 2. I can't imagine that it would be too hard to get 1 and 2 on the PSN store, considering they already have the subtitles for the majority of 1 and 2 in the original release.

The HD collection for the west NEEDS to happen, i also heard that the Yakuza series borrows alot from Shenmu

With love and respect. Leave this thread friend. ....Unless you have a compelling argument to add to the discussion.

The Yakuza series is wonderful and should not be restricted in any way. Period.

cleft54034d ago

I would love to play it, but I am not begging Sega for anything. I am sick and tired of Japanese companies not realizing they can make a decent amount of money by bring their products to the West in a conservative manner.

Atlus proves time and time again that they can make money off niche products in the West. Their is no reason Sega can't figure it out. So they can figure it out, or they can just keep Yakuza 5 in Japan.

I just could not get into like a dragon I love Yakuza series but when they went with turn based combat it just was not for me. I hope future entries go back to its original roots or at least every now and then have a game where is real Time brawler combat

We do have judgement so at least there are other similar games being made by same developers

Yi-Long988d ago

I liked most of the Yakuza games I’ve played, and I (mostly) did enjoy the new direction they took with ‘Like a Dragon’ and its new fighting system. It was a welcome change of pace. Its JRPG turn-based fighting system wasn’t perfect, but it was a good first attempt on which they can expand and build. Didn’t like the damage-sponge boss-fights though, which felt more like a chore instead of tactically taking out your opponent.

Deathdeliverer988d ago

I’m sorry but no way is like a dragon better than Yakuza 0, 4,5, or 6. It’s different with a lighter hearted tone a lot of times. Plenty of slapstick and jokes. It literally feels like a DLC compared to the main Yakuza games. Unless you simply don’t like action games maybe… but going through the underground arenas, fighting the mini bosses randomly on the streets on different games for money or exp (like the guy in the gold suit for example). Not to mention the mini games, which Like a dragon has some too, but not as good as most other Yakuzas. Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing Yakuza from the beginning. It’s like the metal gear rpg/card collector that was on PSP or Vita. It was a cool game and a lot of fun, but it wasn’t a METAL GEAR. It was fun for what it was. I don’t believe this person actually played through all the Yakuzas. Probably gamepassed like a dragon and dabbled in the others to get an idea.

Yakuza 4 is such an underrated game and zero is what made the series have legit string foot outside of Japan

Like a dragon in my opinion isn't on the same category quality wise. It's story and characters aren't as interesting

isarai988d ago

Same, been there since the first on PS2, but you're gonna get a lot of disagrees. Many people defending Yakuza 7 weren't fans of the previous games, or only dabbled, and they seem to outweigh diehard fans like you and me. So it's pretty much like trying to shout over a crowd. This is what the Yakuza series is from now on, Judgement is our compromise, but it seems even that is in the air lately given some behind the scenes conflict apparently.

Darkwatchman988d ago

I literally started with 0 in and Kiwami in 2017, then played Kiwami 2 when it dropped. And had 6 sitting and waiting on my shelf until after the collection of 3-5 dropped. Then I ran through 3-6 in one massive continuous marathon. I’m sorry that i think Like a Dragon is one of the best ones and that having the same combat for 8000 games got repetitive and it was a breath of fresh air to get an actual change?

I welcome franchises taking risks and like a dragon was a massive risk that paid off. Like the article states, it fits the Yakuza brand of humor extremely well with regard to enemy types and their attacks/skills. Also, it’s incredibly reductive to call this a “DLC”. How can it just be a DLC when it’s an entirely different genre as opposed to more of the same. If you want to make the “it’s just a DLC” argument, that would apply more to Judgment, which is just more of the traditional Yakuza gameplay.

You maybe just don’t like turn-based gameplay, which is fine. I like all kinds of games. I’m sorry that my view of game genres isn’t so narrow?

Sayai jin988d ago

There are a few I haven't played so I am replaying and playing through them now on GP.

MadLad988d ago

Same.
Gamepass really let me get into the series.

Sayai jin988d ago

Same here. I started some of the games in the series when we lived in Japan, but was super busy so I never finished. When I saw the series land on GP., I started from thr first and working my way through them.

CDbiggen988d ago

I did like Like a Dragon, it kept the feel of the games, but I got bored of the combat about halfway in. It was the easiest RPG I've ever played.
If I remember correctly - Eri, lower defence move for all. Ichiban - Mega bat. Every fight over in seconds.

True Final Millennium Tower for the Platinun was certainly tricky

Imalwaysright988d ago

I'm currently playing Yakuza 0 and so far it's the best game I played this year.

Urrakia34988d ago

I started it about a month ago and was immediately impressed by the cutscenes, characters, and the story got me hooked quite literally from the beginning. Been playing it on and off lately but definitely one of the best games I've played in a while. It's one of those that make me feel dumb for not jumping into the series sooner, pleasantly surprised.
