PS4 has no performance bottlenecks, claims Killzone developer

The PlayStation 4 has been so carefully designed that developers won't find a performance bottleneck, Michiel Van Der Leeuw, technical director at Guerrilla Games, has told Edge.

I just want to add still NO developer has said anything negative about the PS4, Sony owned or not. Crazy, considering what some of them had to say about the PS3.

nix4029d ago

i know.. sooner or later a PC addict might come and start babbling "we already are playing in such graphics".

all i wanna say is - i want PS4 because of the exclusives games. since PS4 is more powerful than PS3, i want to play GOW in super graphics. i want to play Killzone in super graphics. i want to play other great PS exclusives in super graphics.

if i wanted to play any third party game, i would have upgraded my PC.

thank you.

DA_SHREDDER4029d ago

Im just happy about the extra gigs of RAM. Now instead of only 3 Operations maps, we should at least get 10 or 12 at launch, with customizable guns and upgrades to skills, ect, ect,,

nveenio4029d ago

No bottlenecks is huge. That would mean that all of the power is accessible. That's a tremendous advantage, if true. With PCs, there is almost always a bottleneck (unless you have an uber-rig). Whether it's RAM speed, CPU, GPU, whatever. If the PS4 is designed so that no individual part limits the others, then the system is wide open for awesome.

I can't wait to see what Sony brings us.

Peppino74029d ago

The problem now lies in the fact that if a game under preforms then its obviously the devs fault. They might actually be backing themselves into a corner.

Why o why4029d ago

Nix. spot on, its been those exclusives that have slowed my pc gaming down. There are no doubtably great games on the pc but im happier with the consoles in most genres. I'm still a huge point and click adventure gamer though. The lucas arts closure was saddening for me even though they'd done nothing for the genre of late. I had to dig up some old games. Sad

sengoku4029d ago

no bottlenecks is crazy designing.
they would be the first to actually pull something like this off..

kevnb4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

actually some have. Crytek is the first one to come to mind. @Nix whats the point of bringing that up. PC gamers like pc exclusives too, why bring that up?

NewMonday4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

"It was a very conscious effort to make sure that – with the speed of the memory, the amount of compute units, the speed of the hard drive – there would not be any bottlenecks...there was just discussion after discussion trying to find a bottleneck. Take a look at this design; try to find the bottleneck."

smart of them, the PS4 should be more than the sum of it's parts.

sikbeta4029d ago

For now, of course, lets see in a couple of years, at least we all know it's not going to be like the PS3 in the sense of that it'd be able to catch up with anything "new" as in apps and stuff like that...

LocutusEstBorg4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

You mean the lower-mid range GPU that can't even run 1080p 60fps even now? Battlefield 4 isn't running at 1080p 60fps. The GPU is already a bottleneck.

Computersaysno4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

Why even bring up PC?

A good PC will still be easily faster than PS4 on multiplatform games despite there being claims of 'no bottlenecks' from a Sony dev whose goal is also to hype the machine. Would it cost more initially? Probably. Would it be faster? Don't believe anyone who says one wouldn't.

PS4 exclusive games are what matters most.

But it makes me sigh when I hear people say 'I just want Killzone and God of War with more uber graphics'

Really?

Don't you think there should be more innovative and fresher things to hope for than the exact same games we have been playing for ages now just with better visuals?

I hope for more.

papashango4029d ago

I'm more impressed that there are people here that truly believe in no hardware bottlenecks....

it's up there with unicorns crapping rainbows in madison square garden.

That ps4 koolaid seems to throw logic out the window

nveenio4029d ago

"No bottlenecks" is not equal to "no performance limitations". It is easy to realize that the PS4 won't be held back by drive performance, memory, CPU, and GPU. It is easy to realize that the entire platform is open to be used to its max specifications.

This doesn't mean it's invincible...just that the available performance is, indeed, available.

3-4-54029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

This is what happens when you listen to people though and then make changes based on those things you listened to.

Instead of giving us just enough to make us happy they are giving us everything we've wanted in a console.

It sells itself really where as Microsoft is going to have to sell the 720 because of all the extra BS that comes attached with it.

cyclindk4029d ago

Yeah, talk about learning from your mistakes and taking constructive criticism to heart.

Kudos Sony.

Tr10wn4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

@nix

Sad truth is that the PS4 is still not doing 60 FPS at 1080p and yes there are games that look the same or better on PC and can do 1080p@60fps, how come Killzone is running at 30 FPS? i mean i used to play BFBC2 at 30 FPS it was horrible, they are either lying or terrible developers if they can't make the game run at 60 FPS with those specs.

I know i will get a bazillion of disagree for saying that but is the truth, ill probably end up buying the PS4 but that doesn't avoid the fact the "Next Gen" Consoles can't do 1080p@60FPS yet it just wrong especially for a First person shooter.

@KurianOfBorg

Where did you get that info? BF4 trailer was running 3k@60fps with 2 7990 and that was confirm by AMD and DICE, 3k is a lot to take on, so idk where you are getting this info since BF4 was shown with AMD hardware only and a ridiculous resolution.

potenquatro4029d ago

@papashango. That was hilarious.. Is good that Sony is taking a well grounded aproach for the ps4 tho

cj1pate1014029d ago

The fact the ps4 wont be running 60 fps games at launch? Ehh kinda sad don't you think? Fan boys can't live with or without them?

SonyPS3604029d ago

@nix there are plenty of exclusives titles on the PC as well. Just saying.

LocutusEstBorg4028d ago

@Tr10wn Um...Thats the PC version of BF4 running on a 7990. The PS4 version still runs at 720p.

andibandit4028d ago

Not to rain on your parade, but developers usually say these things after their product failed. Makes no sense to go out 6 months before release of PS4 and their product, and say "This sucks"........

-And so it' begins... E3 I think will be were we will get to see just how good PS4 will be..

I think a lot of games that were not ready for the press show - will be showing what they are working on at E3 -

So we should get a really good look at just what the PS4 will be able to do...

I think it's safe to say if your not at E3 with your PS4 game then it's likely your title is not coming out no were near the launch of PS4, -because anything coming out around launch would be far enough along to show something at E3

So E3 this year is probably going to be one hell of a showing... Can't wait.

Cryptcuzz4029d ago

I am seriously thinking of going as well.

Does anyone know if the press conferences would be opened to the public?

I want to be there when they unveil more info on the PS4; how it looks like and its games.

Thinking of taking a road trip from the Silicon Valley down to E3, that would be sweet if possible for the public.

TheXonySbox4029d ago

yawn, bottleneck is being stuck with old and outdated hardware from the getgo. Thus holding back technology in gaming for half a decade; if not more.

Thats the bottleneck with all consoles.

MariaHelFutura4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

PC gamers being theives held back PC gaming, not consoles. Why would anyone invest highly in something people are just gonna steal?

hesido4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

Consoles will always produce better visuals per transistor, and thanks to consoles, developers can target a static hardware and can optimize their routines to death. So for gaming, instead of sheer power that nobody can use to full extent because of many PC's with gazillion different setups, you have a set piece of hardware that you can extract every ounce.

I don't see anything wrong with that.

Edit: Here's Unity statistics- Take a look at PC's with 4 cores->%23. Rest is dual core (negligible amount with more than 4 cores). Windows XP is still very popular. No Direct X 10 on XP! How about that for holding back technology?

Anybody who blames consoles for holding gaming back is not able to see the picture clearly, that picture tells us how great segmentation the PC hardware setups have.

Cam9774029d ago

Gaming would be nothing if it weren't for consoles. Millions more own a console than PC and that itself motivates devs to produce games as they do. If there were no consoles then you wouldn't see half of the great games that you see today.
You should be grateful.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

@MariaHelFutura
"EA is making more from PC than PS3"

"Xbox 360 led the pack, bringing EA $292 million in the past three months. That compared favorably to the PS3 which did $267 million for the firm. But the PC platform actually managed to outperform Sony's console with $276 million."

http://computerstories.net/...

Computersaysno4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

Hesido, unity stats is a stupid slanted way to look at games hardware. Unity is designed for just in browser games etc, casual stuff not really core games.

At least look at the hardware surveys of something like Steam, which is a app that PC gamers use a lot, instead of some niche software most PC gamers I know don't even have installed.

Steam users on Windows Vista (DX11 capable OS) or higher: 89 percent!!

Number of 4 or more core machines: 42 percent. The fact that the 8 core (tiny tablet cores versus huge desktop cores) in PS4 is no faster than a decent desktop dual core seemingly escapes you.

And as for MariaHelFutura talking about PC gamers being thieves, I shake my head when you see again the number of genuine users on steam who buy and play their games. Don't shove everyone into the same pigeon hole.

Finally "Gaming would be nothing if it weren't for consoles"

This is a joke right?

You do realise that games were first made on computers and personal computers? It was decades after this before anything resembling a dedicated games console arrived.

You do realise that most everything from the USB and Ethernet ports on a modern console, up to the hard drive, the processor technology, the memory, the wireless technologies i.e virtually EVERYTHING inside the machine was developed for PC or PC gamers??? Let alone the internet connected networks (what do you think the PSN or XBL servers are? Consoles? LOL) and protocols, the video streaming codecs the audio codecs and hardware...I could go on and on...lol

Do you even realise how PC gamer demand pushes forward graphics processing technology at a rate consoles alone wouldn't possibly sustain?

Obviously not.

You take away PC from games consoles and you would still be playing ball in a cup instead of waiting for a games console (PS4) that everyone admits is basically just a modest fixed platform PC!

Sigh.

GraveLord4029d ago

Here's a question I hope you answer. PM me if you have to.

Would you buy a $1000 PS4 that gets so hot it needs tons of cooling which results in it being extremely loud........

...or would you buy a $400 PS4 that is low-power and high performance, whisper quiet and games look the same as most $1000 PCs?

TheXonySbox4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

sounds like N4G. Only the few, the minority actually know what they are talking about on N4G. The rest are patriotic fanboys blinded with bias.

End of the day, PC gaming is always pushing limits for exclusives not ports; Graphically I mean.

Where you have consoles that basically hold back the industry graphically, because they make the game for the consoles, then port to smaller markets (IE PC). Consoles are bad for technology advancement because of the gen to gen stagnation in graphics.

This is simple logic, really doesnt take much thinking to realize this after four gens of consoles. /get real people.

A $650 dollar console when its released is actually a ripoff considering what kind of PC that can build you.

Consoles = for the poor
PC = for the quality minded gamer

Rhaigun4029d ago

@ Computersaysno, while I agree with most of what you said, the fact is games are driven by consoles. Yes, it all started on PC, but you're not going to see many games that won't run on consoles. Most devs can't afford to ignore them. Its why most people only buy a GTX 660 or HD 7850. Due to console limitations you know these cards will run just about everything coming out right now.

geassdanny4029d ago

I am sorry, but you really sound butthurt! The only reason why pc gaming is being held back when it comes to 3rd party games is because the devs don't fully optimise the pc versions. It's upto to them if they want to push the graphical fidelity for or fully port games properly for PC versions.

Most of the time they tend to focus on the consoles, because its more profitable( less pirating) and a bigger install base. PC exclusives are an exception, but then again the last time I was excited for a pc exclusive was a long time ago.

Recently with Bioshock Infinite, the developers catered towards both markets, and yes the PC version is sublime compared to the console versions, but none the less, both markets loved the game. So credit the developers for actually thinking about console and PC gamers in mind. So if you have a problem with a shitty PC port blame the devs for THEIR failure to fully optimize the game not the consoles hardware holding back your pc superiority complex!

Computersaysno4028d ago (Edited 4028d ago )

Sorry Raigun but it doesn't remove the fact that PC gaming would exist pretty much as we know it now without consoles existing but the reverse is just impossible.

Console and console gaming owes virtually everything to PC and not vice versa.

PC gaming is the one pushing the technology and the boundaries and even game play with indie titles that genuinely advance the art.

Consoles are for the mass market. They are designed to be cheaper for all the sheep to go out and buy all their FPS games or whatever is popular at the time and the million clones of the original ideas while all the technological and game play revolutions you see are virtually all pioneered on PC titles.

Can you not even see the hilarity of the situation where PC basically created the FPS genre that dominates console games these days. Call of duty and battlefield are PC games originally!

Bioshock the developer started this sort of game back on PC with the likes of system shock. The idea of FPS or action games introducing RPG style elements came about in such PC games as system shock and deus ex.

Most of the successful original ideas this gen like portal or Trials HD or minecraft came about from.... Yes. You know the answer.

It is laughable for anyone to say consoles push the industry and move it on when they have done nothing of the sort relative to what PC has done in terms of hardware or software!

The PS4 will be at the center of my gaming universe. I will take the $15 a month I was feeding my wow subscription and now feed Playstation plus with $10 to spare for purchasing a few must have downloadable's from the past selection of games over Gaikai.

Dark_Eternal4029d ago (Edited 4029d ago )

@DA_SHREDDER
I might be misunderstanding what you're saying, but unless those 'operations maps' are all loaded into RAM at the same time, I don't think that the increased amount of RAM would affect a PS4 Killzone in the way you're imagining (though you would be able to have much bigger maps). Increased customisation and complexity, sure; since the RAM is where the CPU and GPU keep their working data set, one of the main benefits of the massively increased system RAM is that it'll be possible to run games that are way more complicated in terms of the worlds they're simulating and stuff like that.

Hopefully devs will come up will all kinds of cool new ideas! It's definitely an exciting time. :)

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer156d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138156d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Notellin155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem156d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor155d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies155d ago

“Sadly”?

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese155d ago

Flawlessmic155d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld155d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie155d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77156d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231154d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein155d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

In August, online servers for several PlayStation games will shut down, leaving their multiplayer functions unplayable.

purple101637d ago

whrere on earth is the next killzone, im soooOOO thirsty for some proper weighted, (but still fast when running/sprinting) fps gamplay, it felt sooso so good on ps3, with that, lets be honest, very small, quite uncomfortable sixaxis dualshock controller, that was just too small for western sized hands, ok for japanese kids i suppose was the point>??

now with PS5 controller, it would be totally masterfull.

ClayRules2012637d ago

I hear you. I want some NEW Killzone, especially on PS5, with the PS5 DualSense controller with that ever so impressive DualSense of an experience Haptic feedback!

Knowing how far Guerrilla has come since Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone can only benefit greatly from their ever growing talent!!

Bobertt636d ago

I think Sony has given up on their exclusive shooters. They haven't released a remaster for the Resistance series or a new SOCOM game either. I don't think Guerilla is in a rush to make Killzone since they have Horizon now too :(.

637d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box637d ago

All I want is for them to build Killzone 2 with multiplayer included from the ground up, keep the gameplay the same, and I'll be happy.

GG with KZ3 and Shafowfall haven't been able to match KZ2 so I don't really have faith in another sequel.

Unfortunate that KZ2 came out during COD era where every game that didn't pay like Modern Warfare was deemed garbage. KZ2's multiplayer is definitely an all time great.

Michiel1989636d ago

since when was kz2 deemed garbage?

MizHDTV636d ago

Right on dude
KZ2 was just a special game to me

sinspirit636d ago

I'd love KZ2 multiplayer again. I also think they could easily incorporate a mode to compete with Battlefield style game modes

Seraphim636d ago

KZ2 was one of maybe a handful of games I actually put time into online. What a blast!! And the campaign was excellent as well. I certainly miss that dark world. Still ashamed I never buttoned up that Platinum.

Storm23636d ago

A remake of Killzone 2 with the same grittiness and feel on PS5 would be f*cking incredible. The SP and MP were just perfect. I played the sh*t out of that game. Would happily pay a lot of money for that.

DarXyde636d ago

Honestly, I don't like FPS games. They're not for me, but I do agree that there was something about KZ2 multiplayer that even someone like me enjoyed.

Sony really needs to get better about tearing down servers. I don't like that they shut them down.

shadowT636d ago

agree, KZ2 was a masterpiece

Muigi636d ago

KZ3 multiplayer was better imo.

Outside_ofthe_Box636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

@Michiel1989
"since when was kz2 deemed garbage?"

As with anything, things don't get the appreciation it deserves until way after it's release.

KZ2 got a lot of flak for it's weighty controls that many mistook for input lag. People didn't like that it wasn't a twitch shooter like CoD. You also had people saying things like "it feels like you're controlling a midget", "enemies take too long to die" (you can't pray and spray in kz2. You have to shoot in bursts for your shots to be more accurate), people complained about the sniping, etc.

This led to a lot of changes in KZ3 that turned the vets off like reducing the amount of variables for bullet damage, getting rid of spawn grenades, etc.

BISHOP-BRASIL636d ago

@DarXyde

I don't think there's much Sony or any other company in that position can do much different about it... Keeping servers running simply cost money, these gomes don't generate none anymore, so eventually they need to pull the plug.

Astrokis636d ago

KZ2 was definitely better then KZ3, but the third one still had strong suits. It’s been many years but I remember something about Shadow Fall being made by a team at GG that did NOT do KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer which is why it felt different. I remember when I found that out it made a lot of sense about Shadow Falls multiplayer feeling so off.

Horizon zero dawn sold more copies than all of the killzone franchise combined including spin offs on handheld. I guess that's the reason why won't see killzone from guerilla soon. There is at least one more mainline horizon coming out and their second team is working on horizon VR I believe. So it's gonna be a while unless another studio takes over.

I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 on rpcs3 with a duelsense combined with the ability to remap controls to a modern standard and bump the game to 60fps it shows that we really need a remaster to probably the best killzone game to date although shadowfall technically beats it in the graphics department art style was so different that they are incomparable

I’d be happy with a release of KZ2

Killzone went to the same place as Socom and Mag, more money in 25 hour single player games with no servers to maintain. Socom was literally the reason I bought a PS2, Resistance FOM the reason I bought a PS3, all gone now.

Killzone has never been weighted correctly, the jumping never worked.

A new properly-weighted shooter in the Killzone series would be great. More like Killzone 1 and 2 than SF.

I think the issue comes from the fact that the Helghast side is sympathetic while looking like Nazi stormtroopers. The Trump age has led artists to avoid this look entirely.

I feel something may be announced soon

The sixaxis felt fine in my hands since they're small, but the ps5 really made me feel the difference. So ergonomic.

Killzone 2 was/is so good and it still looks good today. The multiplayer was fun as well. If they make a new Killzone I hope it is the style of Killzone 2.

Hauntedasylum8637d ago

I wish Sony didn’t abandon Resistance and Killzone. Those are some of my favorite series on PlayStation. If they’re not gonna make anymore, then maybe a remastered collection of each could be negotiated.

DefenderOfDoom2637d ago

KILLZONE 2 was my reason for buying a PS3. If a new KILLZONE or RESISTANCE was coming out in 22 I would try to buy a PS5 immediately.

Lightning77637d ago

SSOD2 would be big for Sony. The only reason they would be interested in it is if they can turn it into a live service game.

In which I can see that happening.

Hauntedasylum8636d ago

Hell yeah, brother. You and me both.

VanDamme636d ago

For anyone trying to understand @Lightning77’s comment, they had a typo, this should clarify:

SOD2
Superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial, also known as manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, is an enzyme which in humans is encoded by the SOD2 gene on chromosome 6.

Profchaos636d ago

After 5 killzone games including portable Sony felt it needed a break I wouldn't say its abandoned however I believe we may randomly get a ps5 remaster with improved lighting to test the waters and eventually a full blown new game after all you can't just leave shadowfall on that ending

SeTTriP636d ago

Horizon is priority now its a mega franchise for them maybe after Horizon they might revisit.

Imalwaysright636d ago

I refuse to play for online play but there is one game that would make pay for it and that's Resistance Fall of Man. That's the only game that would make me throw my principles out of the window without feeling ashamed of myself.

jBlakeeper636d ago

Remember in the mid 2000’s when nearly every developer started to do FPS or linear third person? Now nearly every developer wants to do open world exclusively because it’s the easiest type of game to leave things out and then expand upon the world with DLC.

So many fond memories of both Shadowfall and Mercenaries Vita online! Shadowfall's SP may have been weak, but the MP was still a ton of fun. I had a lot of time in both, and it's especially tough seeing the Vita's best mp experience get shut down.

RIP my old friends.

LoveSpuds636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

In my opinion, I thought the single player games was really decent too and was treated quite harshly by the critics, but then, I think the Killzone franchise as a whole was kinda under rated by the critics. I always enjoyed the story in these games and I liked the slower, more deliberate gunplay too.

I remember getting my PS4 on day 1 and the first game I installed was Killzone Shadowfall, my workmates and I would play it for hours on end, the mode whish switched between game modes was brilliant.

A world without Killzone Online. That it’s come to this…
