PS4's 8GB RAM was kept secret from third-party devs until console reveal

Third-party developers were not aware that PlayStation 4 would include 8GB of GDDR5 RAM until Sony's reveal event in February - despite having received development kits long before the console's announcement.

Ha.
You shouldnt underestimate the sneakiness.
Bubble for funny.

MariaHelFutura4033d ago

I thought it was funny too. Aparently people don't agree w/ us....

GameNameFame4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

xbox fanboy are saying it was increased to match 720.

As if Sony had to do anything to beat that weak @ss leaked spec.

Just hope that MS threw that entire dev kit out and made something more comparable...

Gazondaily4032d ago

Sorry I'm being blonde here, I can't see what's sneaky in that pic. Tell me!

@Gamenamefam and every one that agreed with him

What weak leaked specs? 8GB DDR is now weak? Sorry but how can people approve of such juvenile nonsense? It's the same kind of immature attitude of those who go out of their way of saying that the 360 came 'dead last', always inserting that word 'dead' in a desperate bid to put across their usually biased point.

Show some class N4G please!

Gamer19824032d ago

@septic watch mr deeds the movie and you will get the pic.
@gamenamefame MS cannot change there dev kits this late into cycle or they would have to delay the console launch for at least another year.

GameNameFame4032d ago

Yes. The leaked spec for 720 were very very weak.

slow gddr3 on grafix card?
weak GPU and etc.

It seems to me that you are throwing a tantrum at how weak the spec was. Show some dignity.... and stop crying to deny its weak spec

8GB ram is amazing considering we are talking about a gaming console

Irishguy954032d ago

It's also a waste of money. Considering it's 8GB's RAM in a console that only needs 4 MAX.

4032d ago
a_bro4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

well, it was obvious seeing that most of the games announced were working with 2gbs of ram.

seeing that makes you realize, just imagine if they go full power.

aCasualGamer4033d ago

Bro, pun intended... my mind would explode. Can it get any better than Driveclub?

a_bro4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

very interested in playing that game. a first person only racing game makes things very interesting, i mean, thats how racing games/drive sims should be played.

aCasualGamer4033d ago

They way they advertised it and presented it made it seem it will be more than just driving the cars, the way he checked the car out and everything. Maybe a more interactive "garage" feature will be implemented where you can buy parts and install them in first person view rather than automatically. Hope they experiment with that as it seems only natural for racing games to evolve more than just tuned racing gameplay.

Hope so atleast.

Jaqen_Hghar4033d ago

Indeed. A man sees this as most developers have seen PS4 at SSJ1, but it can indeed go to SSJ3!

Sharius4032d ago

or they will make this do the fusion-ha with PS vita?

Gamer19824032d ago

Makes sense to why the games were running on PC hardware too at the demo.

DivineAssault 4033d ago

Smart move.. This probably made MS think they had an advantage cuz im sure devs prolly gave them a heads up on what PS4 could do.. Then after the reveal, MS delayed their system announcement to try & make last minute upgrades lol.. Good job sony.. Keep everyone guessing & drop a bomb on that ass... They havent even shown what the console looks like & "other companies" are already scared of em..

riverstars864033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

When did Microsoft delay their system announcement? The only reveal date that can be close to being confirmed is Major Nelson's E3 countdown. Please quit being a troll and actually contribute to the community instead of being a pest.

Salooh4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

I don't care about how the ps4 will look. What would make sony get back to ps1/2 era are the games. Show unique and exciting with wow factor games and it will win. No limitation and don't make it like if it's a gift and waste time by showing off . That would make me soooooo excited for it. I already convinced to buy it day one but i need wow factor again to feel like we are getting something special .

Even though they released the vita with limitations i think sony learned it was a mistake. They already said they want the hardware to be simple and easy to use. Vita isn't so i think they did learn that..

Personally, I feel like i'm bored of gaming so i really need that..

Sithlord-Gamble4032d ago

What are you talking about?
Developers have done nothing but praise the Vita for how easy it is to develop for.
You should probably check your facts before you make statements like that.

Salooh4032d ago

I'm talking about us who are limited not the developers.

fermcr4033d ago

Stop making things up. MS never delayed their system announcement.

riverstars864033d ago

Let's disagree with facts. Shows the overall intelligence of some individuals on this website.

_-EDMIX-_4032d ago

how can either of you state whether it's a fact or not when its a rumor to begin with that was delayed?

those disagrees are from the people who know the sources that leaked the announcement also leaked Sony's announcement of the PlayStation 4.

in my opinion if the sources leaked out PlayStation 4 specs and announcements date they clearly know 720's as well. at this point it's difficult to dispute the credibility.

riverstars864032d ago

@edmix

Dude it is a rumor, not fact. The only hint that Microsoft gave about a possible announcement is Major Nelson's E3 countdown. ( http://www.geek.com/games/m...

I get that the source may be credible, but do you really believe that all their rumors come to fruition? We live in an age where people believe whatever they see on the Internet, let's not be naive and believe every little rumor that comes out. When people pass rumors as facts, it shows how naive and uneducated people really are.

Snookies124033d ago

@DivineAssault and fermcr - First off, you can't confirm that Microsoft delayed anything, though saying he's making it up is untrue as well. They could very well have delayed a potential showing of their console. We don't know one way or the other, unless we work with MS lol. (Probably not even then...)

Arai4033d ago

Just want to point something out regarding the article.
The author seems to think DDR5 = GDDR5, which it isn't.
The PS4 uses 8GB of GDDR5, which is found on most modern graphics cards.

Wanted to clear that up so people aren't confused.

Snookies124033d ago

Yeah, it would be kinda crazy if it had 8 gigs of DDR5 ram lol.

dcbronco4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

It would be...futuristic.

Arai haven't you learned. Never tell the truth.

@Snookies. Check Arai's post. DDR5 doesn't exist yet. It's GDDR5. DDR4 won't be out until late this year or early next.

Snookies124033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

Disagrees? People want DDR5 even though it would cost an arm and a leg?

RegorL4033d ago

@Snookies12 if I ever develop a graphics chip I will call it leg and run it in SLI.

Why?

This mobile has four arms and two legs...

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Duke194h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

mandf1h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor3h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave1h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

isarai2h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris1h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
