10 Gaming Trends That Died This Generation

"Gaming tends to go through cycles. Console cycles, patterns in genres and the all important gamer habits are just some of the trends that grip the industry from time to time. Trends rock the industry at regular intervals but, as the name implies, they seldom last any length of time at all."

Split-screen multiplayer.
Rest in peace.
"Modern gamers" won't know the thrill of competing against your mates in the same room. I miss those times. It is rare that a game is shipped with split-screen mode nowadays.

lol ps4 to STILL have split screen. unlike the wiiU

PeaSFor4033d ago

look like someone didnt owned a ps3.

thezeldadoth4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

@gamefiles
Wii U has split screen. Actually it goes a step beyond, in some games one can play on the tablet screen, the other on the tv, so both people still get a complete view of the game. Sonic all stars gave the capability for FIVE people to play, four on the tv, one on the tablet.

Someone disagreed with facts, this site is beyond saving.

I don't get all the people always saying splt-screen gaming has died this generation. It's such BS and has really NEVER been true. Games right from the start of this gen have has split-screen or couch multi-player of some sort.

Look up a list of split screen games this gen, just google it and you'll get a whole list.....I posted one here like 2 years ago and the list was long then, it's gotten much longer since.

I've been console gaming since the early days of consoles, and I don't really recall any generation having more split-screen games than the PSwii60 generation.

I personally can't read this article because the site just doesn't work on the PS3 browser so I don't know if this was mentioned in the list. But the thing I miss which used to be a common thing for online games last gen but have been almost 100% gone from online games this gen, are public text chat lobbies outside of the private game lobbies.

I know they had some BS sometimes with spammers, but an easy to use mute system always fixed that and those public text lobbies were great for making like minded friends, and even making good enemies. Sometimes I'd just sit for hours getting a kick out of idiots talking back and forth which was not only entertaining but gave a great insight into the human condition.

I really miss public text chat lobbies filled with random people. Good times.

The Ps3 didn't have plentiful exclusives compared to the Ps2. It only seems otherwise because Ps3 games cost more and were therefore more singular purchases, and also because Ps3 had bigger production values. These things blinded people to the fact that there actually weren't that many games. Another factor is that most of the exclusives were just sequels or iterations in franchises, not standalone, unique experiences. The playstation 2 had over 2.5x more exclusives than the Playstation 3, and they were arguably more diverse.

Versus and Co-op split-screen should be a component in ALL games that have online multiplayer.

I totally agree with his comments about horror. Older horror games creep me out so much more. Most horror games these days just rely on having really generic looking shit jump out at you. I thought Amnesia was good, but I didn't find it scary- it was tense and a bit cheaply jumpy in places, but not unplayably scary like a lot of older horror games. I still liked the Lovecraft vibe though, I'd like to see that in more games.

The only game I've seen with 4 player splitscreen competitive local multiplayer is Call of Duty. LittleBigPlanet does a great job with local 4 player multiplayer though.

eddvdm4033d ago

Sorry but I hate when people give COD merits it doesn't have.

Goldeneye? Mario Kart(s)?

Good article btw.

e-p-ayeaH4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

Split-screen multiplayer is still quite alive in some games.

online splitscreen multiplayer does have its importance in some of them as well.

Transporter474033d ago

I want Split Screen back so much

StrawHatPatriot4033d ago

I wish video games were like normal games. No worries about backwards compatibility, easy multiplayer, etc.

KShinigami4033d ago

Portable Storage? Don't know about other consoles but PS3 can copy games memory to usb and vice versa.

arronax-14033d ago

Not ALL games. I can remember some games like Star Ocean 4 or (either) RE5 or SF4 that don't allow you to do that.

kreate4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

RE5 doesnt have any problems copying save file to usb.

But this isnt sony doing that to games. Developers are blocking u from copying it. And its a very select few games where u cannot copy.

ginganinja4033d ago

Protected saves wont let you copy them to stop people gaining easy trophies.

If you're a plus member, cloud-saving sort of negates the need for an external physical storage device.

mydyingparadiselost4033d ago

The Wii could too with SD cards. The articles facts are no where near clear or researched.

This sounds very interesting, Superhot was a great game to take inspiration from.

I liked the VR version of SUPERHOT. If this ends up being as good I'l pick it up (once available) for PSVR2.

Tomb Raider Remastered just quietly censored one in-game detail

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered players are ticked off by the game’s most recent patch, which censors in-game pin-up posters of Lara Croft.

This is why gaming is screwed. When people change things to fit someone’s agenda, it’s a slippery slope downhill.

Christopher4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Even if that agenda is of the developer? Way to remove developer rights.

***One player called it a “huge problem with modern games,” saying they can now be “ruined AFTER people buy them”.***

The level of drama. Yes, I recall sitting there for more hours than I did anything else in the game. These two pinups are the core of the game, after all!

coolbeans3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

rlow1's cringe catastrophizing aside, I do think developers *ought* to strive to maintain an original work to the best of their ability. The language of a "remaster" tacitly implies that - for good or ill - what's being resold is what fans remember but better.

Profchaos2h ago

Games can be ruined after purchasing them yeah we know this not from this but from GTA IV which had half it's radio content patched out due to licensing expirations and to me that was a huge deal.

This pin up poster is a bit of nonsense but the whole argument of modern games can be ruined post launch is Absol true.

DedicatedDark1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It's not their work to censor. They are incharge of restoration & remastering the work, not overwriting it.

Barlos56m ago

It's not the agenda of the developer though, they're pandering and trying to increase their ESG score.

Way to support censorship...

victorMaje54m ago

It’s not the end of the world for sure, but I understand the hate towards this kind of change. I believe it’s also a matter of principle.

Imagine a Picasso painting being restored & the restorer deciding there aren’t enough strokes, or some lines aren’t straight enough or curved enough…not sure it would/should sit well with people.

Have all original devs signed off on this change? Even if it’s the case, are we saying older gamers are better mentally equipped to process what was there than current gamers, hence the change?

Enough time ago the case was made that games are an art form. We’re supposed to have won that case.
So which is it? Are games art or not?

Eidolon1h ago

Hasn't this been happened for over a decade since remasters? I can't see that it's any worse now. Maybe if Sweet Baby starts getting their hands on remasters we will definitely have a problem.

Rebel_Scum3h ago

tbh I dont see something like this as censorship. Does anyone else not find it strange for someone to stick pin ups of themsleves in a locker room?

Now of it was a pin up of some half naked firefighters it might make sense as Lara might like that, and if they removed that I would cry censorship. But removing pin ups of the main character, yeah I get it.

Barlos51m ago(Edited 51m ago)

It's a game, and they were placed there for the audience. It's not real life. If it was, she wouldn't have fought a T-Rex now would she?

Yes, it's censorship but it's a bit less in your face. If they were in the original game, then they should have been in the remasters. It's bad enough that they have that ridiculous unnecessary warning at the start, but then they start removing things post launch. I don't care how small the change, they shouldn't be doing it. It's nothing but ESG pandering but in a subtle way.

SimpleDad28m ago

By the year 2030, this remaster collection will totally be changed and censored. Probably will remove Lara as a playable character. It's ridiculous. Glad that my family didn't buy this.
I still have Tomb Raider 2 PS1 as a memory.
