Can The Wii U Compete with the PS4 and Xbox 720?

If there ever was a console which could be considered ubiquitous in the mainstream it would have to be the Nintendo Wii. The runaway success of Nintendo’s Wii cannot be stressed enough — it was a complete monster of the last generation, surpassing everyone else in the industry and even transcending the realm of gaming and making it into the world of technology and pop culture in general. Everyone young and old was interested in the Wii, with it not only appealing to gamers but to to just about anyone with a pulse. The question was if Nintendo could get lightning to strike twice and for the Wii U to be as big of a success.

Hard to tell at this moment and until E3 comes I think we all would be able to tell. Based on the specs and exclusives and games that are skipping the Wii U tells a lot and Nintendo haven't really started pushing out some exclusives (expect some at E3 2013 (the best E3 ever)). I think at this point the Wii U has a slight chance but if the Xbox rumours about this online and block used game thing is true we could see the Wii U having a bigger chance but I would save this thought until E3.

Scratch ouya out. It'll be Sony 1st, Steambox At 2nd (if valve commits to It), Wii U at a distant 3rd, Xbox--who the hell knows (the average western bro-dude COD-loving fool might still buy it before they realize their stuck with a DRM console).

It's gonna be a strange battle. But with wii u, steambox, and next xbox, one thing is for certain...none of them are as prepared as Sony. Yeah Wii u came out first, but 3rd party support is dead and the console is far from future-proof. Even Ouya and Steambox have to worry about stores holding hardware due to the likelyhood that steambox wont use discs for games (stores don't like carrying game devices that only support digital distribution). Doesn't mean they don't have a few tricks up their sleaves, but Sony seems like they've been gearing up for ps4 for years.

It can compete but not in a direct comparison. That's why the Wii U will have to be priced accordingly. Where the Wii U will shine is in its ability to differentiate itself from the others. Namely the Gamepad features and exclusives. This is why Nintendo is struggling right now, there simply isn't enough compelling software to motivate gamers and the Gamepad features as of yet aren't convincing gamers to want them more.

It's always hard to get 3rd party publishers to really take advantage of hardware, especially if it offers unique features. Lots of them simply want to just port them.

Wii U is now competing with PS3 & 360.

The thing is Nintendo at this point is still trying to get all the 3rd party help to get their 1st and 2nd party exclusive games just to work on a surprisingly new standard for Nintendo- High Definition.

When Shigeru-san said give Wii U more time he really meant "More Time." The PS3 and 360 has already achieved mastery of HD game development much more PS4.

But how long? Wii U can not survive on ports and remasters for long.

EVERY console has issues with games the first year.

My 360 and PS3 sure and the hell did. The PS4 and 720 sure and the hell will. I'm sure it'll be better because THEN ALL of the consoles will have new systems, and thus the justifiability to start making versions other than the 360/PS3 will be there, but that's business, not Wii U bad...sony and MS good thinking.

Also people forget that in REALITY, the PS4 and 720 and wii u will be competing against the PS3 and 360, and even wii.

Just you watch, the 360 and PS3 will be outselling the PS4 and 720 probably for a year, maybe more. This is called NORMAL. Because you have people that want to pay 100-200 for a console and then others that don't mind paying 400-600 for a better one.

Wii U is fully capable of almost all 'next gen' titles and will be able to for the next five years.

Wii U is significantly stronger than a 360 or PS3...see NFS:MW as an example of things to come on the Wii U, and then realize the 360 and PS3 CURRENTLY are playing 'next gen' games.

Because that's what games like Crysis 2 and 3, and Battlefield 3, and Far Cry 3 ARE.

They just can lower some of the add-ons and resolution and get it running on those old machines.

They'll be able to do the same thing with the Wii U and not nearly as severe of cutting things off to make it work either.

People need to remember that EVERY console launch you still see devs making MORE games on the old console then they do the NEW console. That's why you'll see quite a few games that don't have a PS4 or 720 version, but will have a 360 and PS3 version.

So many of the 'problems' you see are not Wii U related, they are 'new console' related. They will happen to the 720 and PS4, though since we'll be further into 'next gen' AS those new consoles are launching, they won't fare as badly in many of these senses, but still in some, just as badly.

See people who don't know specs, are assuming that the PS4 and 720 are powerful machines that way outpower the Wii U.

But when you mention a 2013 Uber PC is 3x a midrange PC and a midrange 2013 PC is 3x a PS4......then somehow they ignore that....

Then say PS4 being 3x a Wii U and a 720 being 2x a Wii U...somehow can't compete and is way outpowered.

So what is a PS4 being 1/8th to 1/9th an uber PC called? Not being underpowered?

All consoles are underpowered, but still have the power to put out great games and far better looking games the 360 and PS3 had.

- How am I missing the point, when you're the one selling Nintendo short. I could have named Nintendo's smaller new IPs like: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Dillions Rolling Western and Harmo Knight, yet I didn't even include them.

New IP doesn't equal innovation. For example, Uncharted, that was a new IP in 2007, yet it doesn't innovate in anyway. Nintendo's IP's often introduce new gameplay mechanics not done in other games, like Luigi's Mansion.

And exactly which games as changed for the worst I mentioned? The games Sony and MS make, in terms of gameplay have been around for a long time. Halo, just a shooter, been doing that since Doom on my PC, Uncharted, 3rd person shooter, been doing that for a long time, Forza.... racing game, been doing that for a long time, Resistance, Killzone, MAG.... a bunch of shooters.

I think new gameplay ideas are more important that new IPs. Sony and MS make new IPs with the same gameplay we've seen before. Nintendo takes old franchise like Fire Emblem and creates new gameplay ideas around them to feel fresh.

All my friends are completely undecided about which console to make primary for next-gen.

We're all xbox this gen (tho many of us had ps3/pc)
but atm we're having serious doubts about MS direction with the 720. And beginning to think Sony, in the midst of their finacial troubles, might actually be more invested in this gen than MS, despite their money.

We'll have to see, but as an xbox fan (and PC) I'm seriously having to consider Steambox, and PS4.

Btw, a few of us bought the Wii U. It barely compares to the PC/360/PS3, IMO. And doesn't have many (3rd party) games..

I agree Sony has some good first party exclusives, so that's more of a reason they might win, than power.

However, Sony does have technology in the PS4 that can block used games that is up to the publisher to decide if they want to use it.

Not to mention, we don't know the price of the PS4 and Xbox 720, we don't know if Sony is charging for online, there is still so many factors. It's far too early to be picking winners.

I'm beginning to become more PC gaming orientated. The games are cheaper, mods galore, and there's a plethora of other benefits along with it.

Consoles are there for exclusive software tied to specific gaming platforms (which is great), but generally speaking (technically writing) - consumers prefer third party offerings over the former (which would be 1st/2nd party exclusives).

I surmise that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony won't be bothered by ''who comes first,'' as long as their business endeavor produces results.

Nintendo is it's own little world. They appeal to everyone and has things typically everyone enjoys. MS and Sony go after the appeal of major publishers and thrive off the fanboy wars. The fact is like the past 2 generations, Sony and MS will do everything and anything for attention while Nintendo just concentrates on the gamers and put out excellent first party exclusives. Sony will also put out first party exclusives but I think next gen we will see less of what gamers want and more of what the industry wants us to think we want, though still be held in high quality. At this point I can't even guess what MS will do, I can only assume they've held a lot back for next gen over the past couple years and we will see new ips at the start of next gen. Sony and MS seem to think that gamers WANT to be connected and care about non-essential things like facebook and twitter which is disappointing because for what I've see most people were upset with the social media focus on the PS4 and the needless Share button. They are putting the needs of a minority of casuals over the fans and gamers who helped build them in the gaming industry to what they are today.

WiiU is doing perfectly fine now and with the few games we KNOW are coming it will be perfectly fine. PS4 will be fine after the fad of the share buttons dies out after a couple months and their dry period launch systems have....MS i dunno because they are keeping quiet for now.

Games dont matter much... wii had few games compared to ps3/360 and still sold more systems thanks to the casual crowd who mostly bought for bowling or for thier kids. This time around tho Nintendo tried to go hardcore and lost a lot of casual attention. They have yet to actually put out a hardcore gamer game that isnt already on the ps3/360 (waiting on you beyonetta). But the killer is the price... that controller costs a great amount and while its a good idea it may be thier downfall because it will prevent them from dropping the price as fast as they did the 3ds. Casual gamers aren't into big spending like the hardcore gamer is....and the hardcore gamer wants power.... so again my answer is no....but yes with a price drop....but no they are in a pickle.

To be honest, I'm more worried about PS4 and 720...

PS3 and 360 fanboys come here and brag about how great those consoles are doing, which is fantastic for now, but it's been stated that 40% of all current gen 360 and PS3 sales have occurred since the most recent price drop. So yeah, those systems have a ton of games and are getting amazing sales.

The problem is that the PS4 and 720 aren't going to be $200 and have a 6 years worth of games come this holiday, and that 40% of all current gen owners that just bought a new console AREN'T going to be early adopters for the next gen.

It's a definite that the Wii U can't compete technologically, but the Wii U will have a year's worth of games and more to look forward to this holiday, and will arguably be at a lower price (unless Sony or Microsoft launch at less than $299 - the price of a Wii U - which I don't see happening)

Not only that, but Nintendo will always have Nintendo exclusives. They aren't here today, sure, but by this holiday we'll see them start to pile up, starting with the ever-profitable Mario Kart series, Smash Bros., 3D Mario, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, whatever Retro is working on, Xenoblade 2, and more.

It isn't going to be about power this gen, it is going to be 100% about exclusives, and until Sony and Microsoft show their cards, and until Nintendo unveils their next set of Wii U titles, it's pretty tough to predict anything right now.

One who really should be scared is MS,.. with this always online bs,.. They already lost Japanese market,.. maybe they can sell 10.000 machines there (entire gen),.. Europeans,.. really don't like this crap,.. Neither do South and North America,..

It is not that infrastructure is kinda not getting there slowly,.. it is the fact that if I go on a weekend ,.. they expect me to pay to another isp provider to play my games? Or my isp is having issues,.. Or people who have caps on their monthly transfers ,.. Or people who simply don't give a rat's ass about online gaming,.. All in all the whole Idea is insane,..and probably illegal,.. They expect me to pay some third party monthly rent, so I can even use my property,..so it functions

Of course it can compete. All three consoles are sort of powerful.

Wii U least powerful, basically 1/3 a PS4 and 1/2 of a 720.

But while a GTX 670 can do more than an ATI 5850, both better than the PS4 and Wii U respectively, but gap wise, about the same, (as both of these GPU's are about 1/3rd faster) both can play games that look very similar.

Now I have BOTH cards, and I wanted more power so I got the GTX 670, but the 5850 still ran games fine, I just wanted higher settings.

I still bought a Wii U, and it's fun, just needs a lot more games. But all consoles go through a dearth of games the first 6 or so months. My 360 and PS3 suffered serious game shortages for about a year. Then the pipeline of games became consistent.

The PS4 doesn't totally outpower a Wii U. 300 percent is a nice bump up, but not a huge gap. The Wii U spec wise competes against the PS4 and 720 far better than the Wii competed against the 360 and PS3. Far, far better. Massively better.

You're getting games that look like NFS:MW and it will get better, and those games can compete what a PS4 and 720 put out. Of course the 720 will be a notch higher, and PS4 a notch higher then that, and PC's capable of having a couple notches higher than even that. But since PC's have a couple notches higher than a PS4 and 720, and THEY compete, then surely when Wii U has is a notch or two lower it will compete against the PS4 or 720.

Games have many 'notches' of graphical fidelity. While each notch has benefits, it isn't a deal breaker to be a couple notches lower. Thus yes, it competes.
