Why the hell should Larian Studios get your money? The current state of RPG’s

Larian Studios are trying to create the best RPG ever, this much is known. Having turned to Kickstarter a good ways into the development process, the independent studio announced a want for community support, in order to fill their world with richness and vibrancy. Kickstarter is usually seen a way to, well, kick start projects, so coming to the platform this far into the games development is a strange and daunting risk. If they already have a game, why do they need your money?

I will be backing them when I get paid next week! I have been a big fan of the Divinity games since Divine Divinity. And Divinity 2 was a great, though slightly flawed, RPG.

RogueSmurf4030d ago

i pledged just because the dev is awesome lol

GamerEuphoria4030d ago

As a site we had all four members of staff back the project. It's a refreshingly ambitious RPG so we were happy to back the project!

RogueSmurf4030d ago

yes its really a refreshing change to see and something we are involved in with regards to promotion and testing

Bakkies4030d ago

Because at kickstarter you get your money for nothing and your chicks for free.

anticlimax4029d ago

Agreeing with you just for the use of clever reference. Big fan of Larian though, go Belgium!

Larian Studios CEO Doesn't See GenAI Replacing Devs; Wants To Use It For NPC Dialogue

Larian Studios' CEO Swen Vincke recently appeared in an interview and clarified that he does not see GenAI as a replacement for developers.

melons19d ago

If you're hiring less writers to write the dialogue that AI writes instead...isn't that replacing writers?

bartfart19d ago

Exactly he doesn't see it replacing devs... Immediately mentions replacing writers hahaha

northpaws19d ago

It also means the same amount of writers can now produce more dialogues with the same amount of budgets, game development doesn't have infinite budget, AI when used correctly, can help generate some dialogues, and then still need writers to have another pass through to make sure those make sense in the game world.

MeteorPanda19d ago

Not really, its a different role. Now you're scripting ai on how they should respond, keywords, language, etc

If anything, you'll need to be a good script writer to direct ai npcs.

Its a new field for them!

anast19d ago

They'll out outsource that job.

anast19d ago

This is the thing. First AI will be used to get rid of all the low level repetitive task and as it evolves it will be used to get rid of more people.

Larian Studios Won't Make Baldur's Gate 3 DLC, Expansions, or Baldur's Gate 4

At a Game Developers Conference (GDC) panel today, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke dropped something of a bombshell by revealing that the developer isn't planning to release any expansions or DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, nor a Baldur's Gate 4.

Instead, Vincke said at the panel, Larian plans to move away from Dungeons & Dragons entirely and do something new, leaving the IP in publisher Wizards of the Coast's hands.

Though this is sad it also makes sense because of hasbro doing the mass job cuts last year remember wizard of the coast lost 1100 jobs.

They probably wanted to do dlc but the people that worked with them are no doubt gone and hasbro might have shut the door on larian. I mean look at the wb games news with live service the suits are making so many wrong decisions.

Hopefully they got a good chunk of the profits as we do not know the extent of what hasbro gets being the ip holder of D&D.

I would like larian to do there own game now no other person's ip they made a fantastic rpg a wild west rpg next perhaps? there are timeline gaps out there.

ElaBosak26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I don't think they ever wanted to make DLC. They already said they aren't doing games in this scale.

Hasbro layoffs have nothing to do with Larian at all and irrelevant to the game development.

IP holder does not get the bigger chunk of the profits. Larian developed and published the game. They get all the profits and just pay licensing fees to the IP holder.

just_looken26d ago

Bg3 made 90mill for hasbro
https://www.ign.com/article...

If the ip got that much of the pie the devs must have gotten a few hundred after expense but the number is not public.

phoenixwing27d ago

if you have kept up with larian studios statements the past year or so you know that they have wanted to not do a game in the d and d universe. they felt too constrained by the wizards of the coasts rules. which is totally understandable. I'd rather they branch out into something else myself so as not to be typecast. Also this is just conjecture but: paying royalties for video game properties has got to suck a lot. You always hear about studios who have to pay royalties losing out big time in terms of how much money they leave on the table for the ip owners.

Kados27d ago

They should do another mainline Divinity.

Murdability26d ago

Truly a once in a lifetime game

anast26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Too bad they didn't team up with Paizo instead.
