EA Comments on ‘Worst Company in America’ Poll

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore has responded to a recent poll in which EA was chosen as a semifinalist for “Worst Company in America.” (An "honor" it also received last year.)

Personally i havent bought a EA game after BF3 and dont intend on doing so until BF4. I dont see anything else worth while on their list either.

So they have me on Origin however i havent logged on in a year. Hell its uninstalled from my PC.

What else can they expect when they have the worst possible anti customer friendly policies around.

Shutting down online servers just so people buy the next game. EA will use all sort of tactics to milk their customer base.

Still wish I could not buy EA games, if Fifa is as bad as 13, I probably can rid myself of them completely. Same with Origin though, never log in and own 2 accounts simply because EA forces origin registration on almost all their game sales now.

EA is a very powerful company and they are very hard to ignore. That's why they remain relevant. If we had choices that would make it much easier to decide where consumers would go. If games are only available on Origin for example that doesn't mean they favor it over a competitive service like Steam.

One has to ask what makes any company the worst?

Are they bad to work for? They were sued over overtime not being paid. People have left on bad terms. Development teams have closed down.

Are they innovative? We seen some great new IP's like Dead Space. But we also seen the company play it way too safe and some IP's changed for the worse (Dragon Age II).

Are they profitable? The whole industry seems to be down so it's hard to blame it all on EA but how do they compare overall?

Do they have good customer relations? Simple answer, no.

I personally haven't bought an EA game since Dragon Age Origins. It was a protest to Online Pass and shutting down servers.

Madden STILL lacks proper player weight/momentum, proper foot movement (too much sliding and zig zagging), enough penalties, good A.I, realistic looking tackles, a an actual working challenge system, realistic pursuit on the ball (players speed up to intercept a pass or pick up the football at the last second), receivers that aren't passive and actually try to move to get the ball, good CPU play, etc. They screwed the offline gamer with no CO-OP PLAY, or watching the CPU play for those gamers who want a challenge by building a great team and simulating it.

Oh yeah, they added Total Control Passing.

TCP was in a game made 8 years ago called "NFL 2K5", which was actually really good, for its time. That game let you talk to trainers to see if a player was injured or ready to go, they let you check your e-mail from your staff, and let you prepare your team for a game (by simulating film watching), something a coach ACTUALLY DOES, no, a coach DOESN'T "buy XP packages" or players DON'T "earn XP" and get better by putting up good stats Look at Aaron Rodgers, he got better by the coaching staff helping him out on the bench and fixing any flaws he had coming out of college (whether it was accuracy, mechanics etc.), not by letting Aaron Rodgers magically get great 500 yard passing games that will somehow magically make him a better player, which is EA's logic.

Yes it is. Moore, people a lot smarter than you have cracked the foundation of this supposed creative move and found out that servers aren't at all necessary to make SimCity run. Much like Live and Steam (in some instances), Origin is a forced service. You lock everything behind an Origin account. Do you think if people had a choice to use Origin or not they'd use your service? You're deluded.

A buddy of mine got SimCity. Want to know something funny? Even though they never mentioned that you have to be online leading up to the release date, it says so on the front cover at the bottom. I find that a little humorous considering it's like there's that floating message in the back of a buyer's mind saying, "This is your last chance to back out now!"

For me, EA has earned the Worst Company in America title again. Everything from their shady DLC to forced online services to dumbing down their games, EA has basically done everything that gamers hate in the industry. Regardless of whether or not people hate them for who's on the cover of any given NFL game or their support of the LGBT community, it's their business practices that drive gamers crazy and vote for them as the worst of the worst.

I agree with you completely. I even said as much last year when they were up for this award, and after they won it.

I never heard of the Consumerist, and didn't think about them again until this poll came back up.

However, this was actually addressed in the article. Basically the consumerist is a website oriented around the consumer. As such while other companies have done some pretty bad things(far worse than EA IMO), EA still does enough bad things to warrant their inclusion into the poll.

It's not hard to imagine why EA won last year. Gamers tend to be a passionate group, and when they bandwagon on the hate train, they can go all out. Rationally though, despite the fact EA does some crappy stuff, people don't pay attention to who else is there and more deserving of this award, or even bother to find out why others have been nominated.

I have no doubt the fact it's been reported EA is in this poll has helped drive traffic to this site for people who want to vote just because they really dislike EA.

@coolbeans Yeah, I agree with that. The other companies listed have done a lot of shady things. Facebook sharing personal information and profiles of its users, Bank of America systematically ruining people's lives with their policies, and Comcast with their supposed "deals" for quality television. But I still think that EA even being put on this list and winning this title will be a good thing for the industry.

In the long run, developers and publishers will look at certain business practices that EA embraces and most likely turn away from them. We can get good quality games. Rather, we can get creative and individually based games as a widespread effect. Gamers hate the conventions of business to which EA, Capcom, and Activision consistently push. It is this way that groups in the video game industry will strive for customer focused agendas instead of seeding the pockets of the suits who don't care about the industry like we do.

I totally agree and we will probably be swimming in disagrees soon, but EA is not even close to the douchery of many financial institutions, insurance companies, or agriculture. Heck I would even put Walmart (who destroys small business everywhere they go and treats customers like trash) and ISPs providing broadband with data caps ahead of freakin Electronic Arts.

It's an online poll that gets more circulation on gaming sites than anywhere else because EA is involved. Of course it is going to draw a lot of attention for EA. EA has a terrible reputation among the online communities in gaming.

But let's not make it a bigger deal than it really is, either... this poll got all of just over 250,000 votes last year. Battlefield 3 alone has over 6 million active players.

I think Activision is worse than EA, but I wouldn't put either company close to the realm of "Worst Company in America" status.

I kinda find all this hate for EA unfounded honestly. I see many comments bringing up that Origin is required to play EA games. Last year I bought the physical DVD of Skyrim for the PC and it required Steam to play it. How is that different with EA games requiring Origin then?

Back in 2004, I recall buying Half-Life 2 at launch when Valve simultaneously also launched Steam, and like how Origin is required for games today, Steam was required to play Half-Life 2 back then. And back then, I was using a dial-up internet connection. I didn't have any problems with the installation, but the process took longer and was more complicated than any game installation I ever encountered at the time and it did require creating a Steam account on an internet connection. I remember the forums were loaded with gamers whose installations didn't go as smoothly (Valve systems weren’t very stable in the very beginning too).

I'm not into Sims games and didn't experience that recent blunder, but I will say they didn't handle that one right. But I'll throw Halliburton and big oil companies in front of the bus long before its EA's turn. With Dragon Age, Mass Effect, SSX, and Dead Space, EA ranks as one of my favorite game publishers, and while I see they are trying to change some of these games to appeal to a larger audiences, they will hopefully (w/ fingers crossed) learn the err of their ways and retreat to making these games more focused on the core fan again.

It's not just oil companies. The whole global financial crisis was a farce. Investment banks got bailed out with out a slap on the wrist and they lobbied against financial reforms that Australia has adopted. Thanks to these reforms, Australia is better off than most economically, but not unscathed.

Speaking on getting people's minds off real problems. In Australia we have Mining companies who are getting fat off a dieing boom. And when the party is over, we'll be screwed, as they thought against reforms that would use moneys raised from taxes to invest in other industries that would make our country competitive. Hell, I forgot about the mining tax until someone mentioned it. Haven't seen a change in my bills.

We have Mining magnates trying to buy out fairfax media (Think of it as Australia's Daily Planet from Superman.)so they can turn it into an unintelligible redneck rag for people without the capacity of critical thinking and spread their propaganda. That would be like state owned journalism in China.

You know what the other side are doing to take our minds off this? They're trying to make boat people Unauthorised (not illegal as we have obligations with the UN) immigrants seeking asylum look like some dirty scourge of terrorists, when most illegal immigrants come here by plane. They can be potentially more dangerous as they can have access to someone or group to supply them with false identification that looks legit, but it doesn't matter cause they don't look dirty. The sad part is the majority of people are idiots who watch drivel like a current affair or today tonight, and they're eating this shit up.

If people believe that, they're living under a rock. If that's what the majority of people, not just gamers, feel. Then there's no hope for humanity when far more malevolent deeds by larger companies and conglomerates go unnoticed.

You can disagree with Peter Moore all you want. I thought that whole 'tallest tree' spiel was a load of wank, but objectively, he does raise some fair points.

What I don't like about EA is that they don't come up with anything original. They see a game becoming popular and selling well, the next day they start developing a very similar game( with identical gameplay and controls) and advertising it as a much better game than the one they are copying. It's like if you open a pizza place and become successful, EA opens a pizza place next door and start bad mouthing your product to get your customers and at the end of the day have the nerve to come and ask you for a change for a $100 bill.

I just don't get it. All of these little things are irritating philosophy choices on EA's part, but they still put out fun some fun games. They don't seem to do things drastically different from other game co. re: online only games (activision-blizzard), dlc (freakin' everyone) and Origin (Steam, PSN, etc.). Meanwhile Goldman Sachs threw the U.S. economy in a recession in a bid to make money hand over hand over fist. Am I missing something here?

I can't remember the last time I bought a game released by Electronic Arts, had to be close to a decade ago. I just don't like their tactics or complete rehashing, but when it comes to DLC they will have moutains of it. Yes, I completely agree with "Worst Company in America". There time has came and went.
