THank you for this article. I think ive said all I wanted to say about this gen of gamers. I just dont know what or who they are.
All I know is I pay hard earned money for the games I want to play and I mostly paly it all. I dont like to be stopped because of platform.
I enjoy them all and I look forward to them all.
But there is a HUGE section of gamers that consider themselves hardcore or true gamers because they play nothing but COD.
I know cause I've seen their gamer cards and spoken to quite a few.
Some gamers only buy say Uncharted, or Madden (sports games)
This has its validity, but it seems to me that this very niche group is the more outspoken and therefore the industry feels they speak for the majority.

I don't like MP games unless its a competitive mp game. Halo, COD, Battlefield, Gears, (honorary mention Homefront).
Thats it.
If something else comes along that can be placed with these I welcome it.
NO SP game should ever have MP in it. This means there will be no DLC for the SP game, this means that any season pass will be MP-centric, this means that this is a bogus way of extending the SP experience. Period.
Co-op games are boss, and offer a great alternative to playing solo. There are times when gamers don't want to kill each other in a box, and you may want to experience a great story with a buddy. So that it feels you are in a horror, or action movie. Nothing else compares to it when doe right.

There should be sells and an appetite for all kinds of games. Not whats happened now, which is a hot mess.

"Why are you telling Us" ? The people readily seeking news and opinions pieces arent usually or necessarily the "dude bros game" public and already give their dues and chanes to unknown or lesser known title .

Go tell the general public that there might be other things than Madden , fifa , cod and mario , not us .

I still don't see how any of this is killing the game industry.
I've been gaming since 1981, and sure, there's been stale periods when you see nothing but the same theme being rehashed over and over again. But that's how it goes.

Look, in 1985 a game called Super Mario Brothers was released and over the next few years all you saw was platformers copying the formula.
Then, in 1993 a little game called Doom hit, and everywhere you look it's 1st person shooters.(Granted, Doom wasn't the first FPS, but it was certainly the most popular)
Enter 2005, and you get a game called World of Warcraft becoming a huge hit. Then, like before, a hundred games using the same formula come out, because they see the money to be made.

This is just another phase. If people like CoD, then they're going to buy CoD, each and every one of them.

So what?

I play Assassin's Creed like a fiend, and if they make 20 more, I'll buy 20 more. Why? Because I don't need to be constantly stimulated (jerked off) by the newest and most innovative thing. I've found what I like, and I'll continue to pay Ubisoft for more of what I like.

For all of you (like the author of this article) who want to whine that the industry is going to die because of people like me, most likely, the industry has been around longer than you have.

It's not going to die in our lifetime.

This article is all over the place. The fact is, we must buy what we want to see more of and boycott anything which we think is heading in the wrong direction.
If we want to see MMO's or f2p then we should buy more of them (I hate them myself).
If we want to see fairer DRM then we DO boycott companies which use it and reward those like CDprojekt which treat us like humans and not cash cows.
If we disagree with kojima on this issue then we wait and see if his change was made for a reason, and IF the game is worse for losing Hayter, we punish Kojima by waiting a year before we buy his game (proportional punishments).

Speaking from an economics perspective, we must add on the cost of what future trend we may be supporting (draconian DRM, a genre we don't like. For the latter point, I use TES online as an example: it looks like it'll be a good game, but if you want to see single player TES prioritized then you don't buy it (Bethesda may do what Blizzard did after all and ignore the previous franchise - wonder when warcraft 4 is coming?)), and make our decision based on this.
If the CEO at the top of a company is a bad guy, then we must get vocal and collectively boycott that company until they become more friendly to us. Yes, we may really want to play simcity, but if buying that game means you're supporting such DRM in future releases, would you still go ahead and do so, taking into account this extra cost?

This article has the wrong conclusion. Variety is not important, but good, player friendly games are.

We must buy what we want to see more of, be it how companies treat us, DRM, game genre or quality.

If games are to remain an art form, then we must try and punish companies proportionally and stop allowing corporations turn us into cash cows.
