Are Video Games Giving you Value for Money?

Planet Ivy: The current generation of console video games is certainly impressive. New games boast lifelike graphics, innovative gameplay and some of the most inventive narratives of any modern medium. With Sony’s announcement of its next-generation console, the PS4, these standards are set to soar ever higher. This rise in quality will come with an inevitable hike in costs as well, forcing us to reconsider whether games really do offer value for money.

I can name on one hand the games I've bought in the last two years which weren't worth the money-games are at a very high quality right now

moviewatcher4033d ago

Are you joking? Prices are at an all-time high, quality at an all-time low

appleandroid4033d ago

What are you basing this on? More games have been sold in the last 2 years then at any point in gaming history!

Well I have been playing ni no kuni and have to say that I paid less than a $1 PER hour of playing it and had one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Oth I paid $10 per hour of crysis 3 for far less amusement and fun cause of the typical generic fps gameplay. Unfortunately the latter exists a lot more.

I've had too many games lacking in content for the price. Super Mario 3D land was like 5 hours long to get all the star coins, in fact most of the 3DS purchases lacked content for the money. Kid Icarus was an exception.

They like to use the excuse that people want "portable games", I want games that give me value for money, not 1 minute levels. Thank god I have a Vita aswell.

Agreed-has never been a more exciting time to be a gamer, even COD and it's ilk are exciting enough online, Crysis 3 is amazing

therealmccoy4033d ago

Crysis 3 was a little overrated, but fun

Zha1tan4033d ago

Depends on the amount of content offered.

For example are short linear SP campaigns like Uncharted, God of war etc etc worth the full price tag when they can be completed in a weekend?

I don't think so, they don't offer as much playtime as other games I play so they are not worth the full price.

Bhuahahaha4033d ago (Edited 4033d ago )

nope most games are just like this now

MoonConquistador4033d ago

Agree with Zha1tan above. If its a game like RDR, LBP or GT 5 all of which have good challenges to complete and can last 6 months then yeah, charge me £40 for it.

As much as i love GOW, and i'm just starting the single player for Ascension, i know i will be done with it in a few weeks. As good as the experience will be, its not value for money compared to the games which can last 6 months or have endless replayable value.

Over £80 for COD and all the map packs/season pass, as much as this game has replayablity, is a complete joke.

Its a fine balance, and not many companies get it right consistantly. I doff my cap to Rockstar on this front. I cant remember the last rockstar game i played where i felt short changed. RDR, the batman games, LA Noir all good value for money.

sprinterboy4033d ago

Well said sir, I was never interested in the MP side of GoW so i rented it, £40 is to much for a quick SP campaign which can be completed on a sunday afternoon, awesome game and will support the dev when there is a price cut.

MoonConquistador4033d ago

I have the platinums for the rest of the series though (except for the damn glitch that stopped me getting GOW 2 plat) so i had to buy it. Better than renting and having to buy a network pass for the multiplayer

Last gen games gave us value for our money. Can't say the same about this gen for most games.
