Rein says he wasn't laughing at Wii U, points out UE3 critical success

Epic's Mark Rein seemingly laughed at the question when asked if Unreal Engine 4 would be available for Wii U. Rein has since clarified that this is not the case, and has also pointed out Unreal Engine 3's success on the Wii U/PS3/360.

But I don't really care because he showed off an Unreal 4 engine demo on the PS4.

Edit: What I mean this is that I'm only planning on buying a PS4 (unless the 720 turns out to be better) which is why I'm happy to see that Sonys console supports the latest unreal engine.

Like i've already said, if they wanted to they could enhance UE3 a lot.

Look at Soldier of Fortune 2 back in 2002, it was built on a highly enhanced Quake 3 engine and it looks a fair bit better than Quake 3 does. Goes to show you can do a lot with an engine if you work on it more.

Nintendo will probably suit up with it's next console. If they launch it within the next 3-4 years it'll put Microsoft and Sony in a weird position of either having to make due for another 2-3 years or releasing a new console. Nintendo's turned into something marketed for kids as of lately.

Don't really know why ppl seem surprised about this. Nintendo hasn't had stellar 3rd party support since the snes days. Although the GameCube did have decent 3rd party support during its life. I'm really hoping the wiiu can at least match the GameCube as it was on of my fav systems ever.

Its like the first commentor said. That demo was running on a single GTX680 and a GTX680 can't even run Crysis 3 at max setting without flaws. Cry-engine is way more advanced.

Cryengine looks a lot better to me. It also was made for "all" major consoles and was confirmed by its creator to have been running just fine on the Wii U.

I saw nothing in either of the Unreal Engine 4 tech demo's that matched the top secret tessellated toad tech.

I think you're missing the point man, yes CryEngine is superior heck there are several games that don't use Unreal yet smoke the best it can offer.

The thing is UE3 was the most popular game engine this/last gen, an a $$ load of games utilised it, and it wasnt on the Wii ...do you get it now ?

UE with each gen has always been very popular with devs and you can expect the same with 4, UE4 not comming to the Wii-U for whatever reason is a HUGE problem games wise.

This gen I've enjoyed, The Uncharted trilogy, Little big planet, GTA4, Red Dead Redmption, Tokyo Jungle, Borderlands 1 and 2, Demon Souls, White Knight Chronicals, Portal one and two, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Heavy Rain, God of War series, Sly Cooper trilogy (old games but first time playing them, Oblivion, Skyrim, LA Noire, Journey, Braid, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, Transformers war for and fall of Cybertron, Batman Arkham Asylum and City, Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mag, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, the Pixel Junk games.... And many more.

How many of those games came from last gen? I said already new AND old, however there is more new then old in that list. Surely if Nintendo have been round since the 80's they could of made more games no?

Wii sports resort, Wario Ware, Sin and punishment, Fire Emblem, Zombi U, Punch out, Resi 4, Red steel, Mario Kart, Okami, Monster Hunter, Paper Mario, No more heroes, Dead Space extraction, Xenoblade, The Last story, atsunoko vs. Capcom, Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Lego City Undercover, Donkey Kong returns, ect ect.

Along with enjoying everything that Nintendo had to offer, I also enjoyed what MS and Sony had to offer along with all the 3rd party games that didn't get released on N console.

The thing is no one has seen retros engine. For everyone whoowns a Wii U heres all you need to feel better bout our gam system.

A connected source told us that Retro Studios has been charged with creating game engines for Wii U and helping other developers implement them. While we didn’t get any specifics on what exactly “other developers” means, our source commented that Retro’s work involves both internal and external projects. The icing on the cake? Personally, I think Nintendo would do better just sharing fully rendered 3-D models across projects.

Even if they used UR3 if they could cut and paste objects from game to game- like say a bottle, groceries, or a candles- (via some central Data base from Japan to Texas) that could cut down on a lot of designer time.

Sure, you could make an UE4 game run on Wii U, but that would require so much work that you're better off just using UE3.

I don't think you will see any UE4 games on Wii U.

Soooooo... Epic itself is not gonna make UE4 run on the Wii U, but if another developer wants to take the engine and adapt it for the Wii U it can? That's kind of a really roundabout way of dealing business..........I think I know what these all these developers are doing, they want to just throw the Wii U under the rug, but they won't say it out right. This because pretty much every time they count out Nintendo, it still ends up being successful. They are just covering themselves so they can jump back on in case the Wii U becomes popular..........I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Who cares if he was, the Wii U is not about looking "next gen", it's about the way you play the games that make it "next gen"? I would say unique.

I recently made the jump from 360 to PC and at first the wow factor was there, games looked awesome. But at the end of the day I was still playing FC3, it looked a lot better but it didn't make me enjoy it anymore then I would of on ps3/360.

Playing ZombiU for the first time with the pad was awesome, it's just a shame I completed it.

Too late, this is going to lead to a whole load of developers choosing UE4 OR Nintendo next gen.

Although it may seem fine if you don't like platformers or kart racers, realistically, if you have an original game idea, you'll be unable to afford to risk it on the PS4 or 720.

wii u has received nothing but negative feedback since launch (eve before it launched).. The name, its power, its features, its support, etc.. People didnt even know it was a new system.. & some still dont! Nintendo does have its fan base that will stick with em to the end so it will be ok but they made some very poor decisions with that thing.. i am a fan of their software because they have great developers but their hardware? ehhh not so much

Wii U is a blast, only downfall and it was expected is that of its cheaply implemented gpu. Why they did this again is baffling.

But that does not mean it is a bad chip, I believe it will keep up with nextgen for at least 3 years. The problem right now is that there are no good games on it, that really impress.

*What he probably meant to say is that Will the WiiU run the latest tech demos as shown, NO! Will the ps4? Sorta. AS you can see in the videos, even the PS4 has everything running at about a mid-high "Medium" settings.
