Josh Mosqueira has explained that Blizzard and Sony identified the “significant amount of consoles not connected to the internet” as their reasoning for including offline play in Diablo 3.

title is completely inaccurate

ceedubya94043d ago

Indeed it is. Article isn't much better.

ArchangelMike4043d ago

Agreed, the title is misleading, and the article is doing more than simply stretching the truth.

GribbleGrunger4043d ago

Totally agree. This is ridiculous spin.

jmac534042d ago

I am so tired of these misleading article titles to generate hits.

Digital-Devil4043d ago

Why does it take a significant amount of consoles not connected to the internet for developers to know that not everyone wants to be connected 24/7? If the game has a single player option then allow offline play. Not everyone wants to be connected, especially with the amount of idiots online.

Baka-akaB4043d ago

It was a bullshit excuse . They allowed offline play on consoles because consoles themselves are already a kind of DRM .

Too much fuss and hassle to pirate on ps3 and even - the seemingly easy but tedious to pirate - 360 .

Godmars2904042d ago

Then again titles on Xbox have a habit of being leaked online before they're released.

Godmars2904043d ago

because they want them always online. MS especially wants it so they can have a constant revenue stream.

Godmars2904042d ago

MS doesn't want a constant revenue stream, and yet everything they've done has been based around XBL Gold?

Okay then...

Jakens4042d ago

MS better come out swinging. It's really up to them to decide what to do with 720, however I want MS to stay competive during the fight for next gen.

Note: The entire fight, not only two thirds.

MWH4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

I agree with you and with Baka about it being a total bullshit excuse.

but know this friends, Diablo 3 is a fun hack'n slash game that doesn't live long offline but it spans more hours online.

unfortunately the offline mode leaves much to desire from such a classic brand.

"Mosqueria may be talking solely about Diablo in this particular instance, but Microsoft would do well to take heed of such observations. The console platform is on a shaky nail as it is, the unnecessarily isolation of any group may prove a very risky move."

Do you think he's referring to their Kinect/casual/entertainment focus with that shaky nail remark?

DragonKnight4043d ago

I think he's referring more to Live and possibly the "always-on, always connected" mantra of the NextBox.

mynd4042d ago

Seems the difference between "mandatory online" and "always online" escapes many people.

DragonKnight4042d ago

The line between always online and mandatory online is razor thin.

Jakens4042d ago

Mama said that always online is the devil.

greenpowerz4043d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

What is up with this story? Anti MSFT S.D.F are worse this coming generation than the last, now that MSFT proved to be a force.

-Attacking 720/MSFT because PS4 rumors before the Sony PS4 reveal seemed like an attack Play Station.(rumors turned on MSFT because of Sony's DRM patent etc)

-Making up rumors and calling them facts, giving Sony the benefit of the doubt with the rumors before the PS4 reveal. Yet these same people claim MSFT's are set in stone claiming it's too late for MSFT even though Sony had different specs for PS4 just weeks ago(litterally days before the PS4 reveal)

-Trying to provoke other media in writing articles about fictional topics, baiting the other oulets with traffic caused by nervous Sony fans.

-Now! editing news and changing info/facts/truth out of nervous desperation due to haters no longer believing their own delusions

*Always connected* is a feature that allows the box to use the new auto update features never signing out the user so the xbox can use remote access/control features(smartglass/PC etc)

*Always on* is a full standard now and not like the 360's optional and limited version of this feature(background downloads when the console is almost off in the 360's case)

^^his allows control of the console in any power state. The console can be controlled in STANDBY MODE/POWERED ON with Kinect and other remote devices. You need both these features to use the features the way that is intended.

Kinect always being on(waiting for input/comands) is a function of the device(Kinect 2) having full control of the hardware and OS no matter the power state or location of the user on the console operating system(in any game even non kinect ones, any app, service/feature etc).

Not hard to grasp.

@Green

How much did Microsoft pay you to defend them, down to the "always online?"

OT

I like the idea of an offline mode, not because of the "online DRM" or because of "privacy" like Sony wants to use (which is a good thing), it's this thing called ISP going down whether its 5 min or 5 hours; I like the idea of being able to play offline if needed.

Jakens4042d ago

Pro MS but anti greenpowerz.

I will strongly disagree with you.

SDF Repellent4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

Man, I can't wait till E3. I would love to see a debate between Grennpowerz and Strongman, that would be EPIC! I think for just one week right after E3, they should both be temporary granted 10 bubbles each. My money is on Greenpowerz though as his speeches have more than just "Day One" or "MS has abandoned core gamers". LOL

RememberThe3574042d ago

I'm from Seattle, I guarantee Microsoft has had a much bigger impact on my life than it has on yours. I've always supported them when I thought they were do right by their customers(Ballmer is "this" close to bringing the NBA back to Seattle), but everything we've heard about the new Xbox has been negative.

The system is weaker than the PS4, the always on line feature is potentially damning (though I think they'll scrap it after all this push back), and this new logo is clearly more casual focused, Kinect needs to be connected at all times for the system to even function, and there are mandatory game installs. MS so far has been shown to have taken the direction many of us who aren't blind feared they'd take.

It's not looking good for them, and your blind loyalty is pathetic.

Bumpmapping4042d ago

Microsoft Defence Force to the rescue!

Gamer-Z4042d ago

your missing the point, its not that those features you listed are bad its that MSFT isn't giving you a choice just like the way they force their customers to pay to play online. I should be able to play offline if i want too or disconnect kinect because i don't feel comfortable having a camera watch me 24/7. Taking away a persons options isn't the right way to go its anti consumer. ultimately for me it all comes down to freedom of choice and which console is going to give me more of it and right now that's Sony/PS4.

BlueTemplar4042d ago

"significant amount of consoles not connected to the internet" then where is the native backward compatibility for the PS4 because Gaikai wouldn't work on a significant amount of consoles not connected to the internet. so they are going to pick and choose who they alienate.

I see double standards, and smell BS.
all in all I'm going to buy Diablo 3, because I owned it for PC and couldn't play it because of an internet connection, so I will buy it for consoles so I can at least enjoy a game I bought.

DragonKnight4042d ago

Let's see what you're guilty of. Hmmm.

Well, first of all you seem to have mistaken the Diablo 3 dev for Sony.

You've also taken the quote out of context.

Then after your complaining you decide to support the idea anyway.

Way to stick to your fallacious guns slugger.

KrisButtar4042d ago

I believe you miss understood my complaining
"Blizzard and Sony identified the “significant amount of consoles not connected to the internet” as their reasoning for including offline play"
I can clearly read Sony.

"Then after your complaining you decide to support the idea anyway."
I complained about an always online feature, and always online DRM. I am supporting offline play and want offline features, Diablo 3 was the 1st PC game I couldn't play and still can't today because I don't have an internet service offered where I live and I really can't play it at work. So I really don't see my error in logic and "supporting the idea anyway"

Diablo 4 storefront being a cash grabbing shitshow does unironically attest to that, kudos.

kythlyn12h ago

Microsoft needs to be guiding Blizzard to be what it USED to be, not allowing it to continue to be the greedy bastardization of itself that it has become.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Okay i will be interested if they become old Blizzard but might as well be dead.

Rynxie1d 2h ago

They will never be old blizzard. Most of all the OG's left from developers to those on the top (even some decision making folks left).

Vits1d 16h ago

Shame most of the people that made Blizzard what they were, have already left a while ago.

ApocalypseShadow1d 16h ago

I was about to say this. How can they be blizzard when they're no longer blizzard from yesteryear?

Hofstaderman1d 7h ago

Just like Rare and Bioware...

blacktiger1d 7h ago

Rare was the thing I lost heart

victorMaje1d 4h ago

Exactly. Blizzard hasn’t been Blizzard for a long time.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Knightofelemia1d 12h ago

Blizzard is not the same Blizzard like it use to be.

PassNextquestion1d 7h ago

Were you expecting Microsoft to hire everyone that had left Blizzard long before they purchased the company...

Microsoft has let the Blizzard company they purchased continue to be the Blizzard company they purchased.

thesoftware7301d ago

Wow, PassNextquestion,

You fully understand what that saying means, unlike some people on here who just have to say negative garbage talk.

When someone says, "Just let *blank* be *blank*, "they are just letting them operate how they operate.

It's pretty much how Sony "let Bungie be Bungie."

This comment section is full of outright haters, but you have to "let N4G be N4G"

GamerRN22h ago

This site leans so heavily in one direction...

BISHOP-BRASIL13h ago

I don't think people commenting are necessarily blaming MS for anything here, this is just collective longing for what Blizzard/Vivendi was before Activision's meddling.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil4d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop3d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor3d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog3d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit3d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

H94d ago

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts4d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H94d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop3d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum3d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai4d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
