Killzone: Shadow Fall's Single Player Component Is Finished

Push Square: "Killzone: Shadow Fall’s single player campaign has been playable from start to finish for a “couple of months”, game director Steven ter Heide has revealed. Writing on Twitter earlier this morning, the Guerrilla Games employee stated that he was taking advantage of the quiet time in the office to play through the solo component of the PlayStation 4 exclusive."

LarVanian4043d ago

Great to hear! I just really hope Guerilla have made the story at least 10+ hours long. Killzone 3 really let me down regarding story length.

Conzul4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

10 hours...
a.k.a. 40 presses of the Share button. Heheh.

@below

Guess we'll have to "Share Responsibly" :-P

LarVanian4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

I think it's inevitable people will spam the hell out of facebook with that share button lol.

@ caseh
If only Guerilla had known how popular a character Radec would have become, they would have thought twice about killing him!

HammadTheBeast4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

I'm hoping they spend the rest of the time making multiplayer as badass as 2's was. 3 really killed it with Drones and camouflage everywhere, and OP weapons. Killzone 2 was the best.

And that mech was annoying as hell.

kupomogli4043d ago

@Larvanian

Wait until you see the plot twist in Shadow Falls. Radec didn't die. That was really his clone!

Like a really bad movie series, which was actually good during the first two movies, based on a really good game series that has turned to crap lately. Clones are how people are bringing dead characters back to life lately.

morganfell4043d ago

Radec was great. He was the Darth Maul of Killzone. They definitely shouldn't have killed him so early.

However I would rather find out that Visari's daughter, the leader of Strike Force Alpha of the Emperor's Fist Legion had returned from the Southern Pole and more ruthless than her father she was setting about reuniting the Helghan Forces.

Then make a game where we play that character. Hell I would love any title where we get to be the Helghast. Not one of these whiny turncoat help the humans on Vekta (though I do like Hakha) but an honest to goodness, unforgiving and relentless Helghast trooper.

sinjonezp4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

This is good news. I hope this is the realization that the PS4 is quite easy to develop for and game designers can focus more on optimization time.I am with u that killzone 3 story was lacking, however the gameplay was very immersive. Additionally, Killzone IMO was an intense fun multiplayer...this is hoping they take this time make that experience incredible. PS4 = Day

caseh4043d ago

I'm hoping they've got another Radec myself.

As I got towards the end of KZ3 i knew I wouldn't be facing off against a bad-ass like in KZ2, bit of an anti-climax really.

Reverent4043d ago

Seriously. In KZ3, all we really had to hope for as a final boss type of enemy was Stahl, granted, Stahl would have been amazing... if we actually got to fight him.

I do really hope he makes a return somehow. Malcolm McDowell is just amazing.

subtenko4043d ago

Attention:

Stahl > Radec

seriously...Stahl is like the joker of the Killzone universe. Its so awesome!!!

fei-hung4043d ago

Also wasn't too fond of the vehicle sections. They didn't play as well as the tank and mech sections and I found it difficult to see playing the snow cutter section.

I'm hoping they bring back the better exploding barrels and canisters from KZ2, dynamic set pieces, destructible bits of environment, mech sections, stealth sections, better integrated stat tracking like with the KZ2 site, a climatic ending like in KZ2, a memorable villain or 2 and more MP madness :)

spunnups4043d ago

KZ3's campaign/story was subpar at best compared to KZ2, the multiplayer, however, was excellent and very addicting

MysticStrummer4043d ago

I enjoyed the campaign more than KZ2's, though they were about equal really. I just missed the heavier feel of the controls. Both fun games.

asbuwango4043d ago

IMO, the supply boxes has destroyed KZ3's campaign, it makes it not challenging at all. Elite difficulty is not memorable at all compared to KZ2's campaign.
As for the multiplayer, I won't care about it as long as they don't bring some form of mobile spawning points back

Eyeco4043d ago

Honestly I thought Killzone 3 was horrendous the campaign is essentially a 4 hour rail shooter with a horrible story,

The online was a unbalanced mess of a COD clone not to mention the whole package is lacking in content with no survival, horde modes, vehicles, forge map editors, only 6 maps.

For some strange reason the graphics are actually inferior to killzone 2 , in fact I recently went back to play KZ2 and the game has held up pretty well to my surprise its so much better than 3 infact its better than allot of the shooters on the market, the more and more I play KZ3 the more I dislike it.

How anyone can bash COD then go on to play KZ3 is beyond me.

Ashunderfire864043d ago

I enjoy the Killzone 3 campaign more than part 2, plus it had more variety in the levels. I like them both though. Can't wait for ShadowFall, Infamous Second Son, and hopefully the next Metal Gear game this year.

spunnups4042d ago

i should have been more specific, i was referring to the story moreso than anything else, i just didnt feel KZ3s was compelling enough to pay attention to it while i was playing or even care

HammadTheBeast4043d ago

Kill zone has better graphics, and it's not been confirmed what BF4 will run at.

ufo8mycat4042d ago

There is no need for 60fps. It is extremely overrated (having played both 30fps and 60fps). It really makes no difference.

Unless you are playing on a 70" HDTV or larger, 1080p isnt really needed either

joab7774043d ago

I just hope its more like K2 in AI and difficulty. I loved the little battlea that infuriated me. I hated tje streamlined easy nature of K3. For mp, i hope it gets alot of advertising because it is really good. The dynamic mp from k3 needs to come back and be fleshed out. Also, while i loved k3 multi, k2 was brilliant. Hopefully there is a middle ground.

MYSTERIO3604042d ago

There's a couple of franchises i hope Sony release next gen.

-Silent bomber 2
-The getaway 3
-The agent
-The last guardian
-Legacy of Kain

And on top of all the recently announced franchises at the event, the PS4 launch will be a killer.

ILive4043d ago

Yes! Hopefully the campaign is compelling and the multi player has 20 vs 20, which would be awesome.

Conzul4043d ago

With PS4's PC-like architecture, why shouldn't we get 64-player matches? There's no excuse anymore.

Minato-Namikaze4043d ago

Game design should come 1st, then player count make it fun whatever the player count may be. But the ps3 can do 128 vs 128 so i'm pretty sure ps4 will be ok on player count.

LackTrue4K4043d ago

@conzul, with its achitecture it can run 64 player matches?!?'
@minato-namikaze......128?!? I can believe it?!?

"Really I got to ask!!!! (My jaw dropped) can all that be Accomplished?!?!?"

I have a huge smile!!!!!!!!! And I had to ask!!! :D

MysticStrummer4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

I hope MAG gets a sequel. After playing MAG it was hard to see any videogame battles as more than minor skirmishes, on console anyway. The smallest MAG matches were the 32 vs 32 Sabotage levels, then you had Acquisition with 64 vs 64 and Domination with 128 vs 128. There's nothing else like it on consoles.

@GuyManDude - MAG had 256 players in Domination mode.

GuyManDude4043d ago

@onyoursistersback

MAG had 128 players on PS3. Player count ties into how much is "going on" in a multiplayer game. For instance, MAG wasn't much of a technical marvel, so a high player count was possible.

On the other hand, a game like Battlefield 3 had advanced lighting, shaders, particle effects, smoke effects, land, air, and sea vehicles and absolutely massive maps (vertically as well as horizontally). Because of this it only supported 24 players.

Killzone 3 had 16-24 player matches. While I'm almost certain that number could go up for Shadow Fall (technically speaking), it'll all depend on what number fits their maps. If their maps are the same size as KZ3, then 16-32 players would be plenty. Don't want to overcrowd the maps.

4043d ago
HammadTheBeast4043d ago

Resistance and MAG accomplished high number battles much better than Battlefield 3 did on PS3 to be honest.

BitbyDeath4043d ago

Should make a MAG sequal with 500 vs 500

_-EDMIX-_4043d ago

Some of you guys are really, really slow. Your looking at player count....d..did you actually take into account the actual engine? 128 on MAG's engine is not the same as 64 on BF3's FrostBite.

Its like saying "Planetside 2 has hundreds in battle, the that means BF4 can" You have to factor a lot of things. its not as simple as "128 vs 64". No doubt BF4 will have 64 players on the console versions, but take into account that it may mean the PC version will have like 128. But in realaitly, I see then both having the same player count, thats IF DICE has not been working on a dream design for PC's that had full destruction and 256 players etc. Now if they have.....consoles will not get the same thing.

BitbyDeath4043d ago

@Edmix, your post makes no sense.
For one MAG has 256 players, not 128.
And why do you want MAG to be a BF clone?
MAG can stand on it's own merits.

KwietStorm_BLM4043d ago

You don't just up the player count just because you can. That's a pretty good excuse right there. The maps would have to cater to that many players as well, and Killzone is not that kind of game.

so the demo we saw at the conference was from the final code... What a disappointment because graphics weren't that great and gameplay looked incredibly generic and archaic. =/

majiebeast4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

It just means the singleplayer is out of alpha stage. Its probably close to beta by now which is normal. Graphics upgrades, glitches and bugs are all at the last stage of a games development which is after beta.

Jaqen_Hghar4043d ago

does this include framerate increase? A man hopes that a developer bumps the FPS up from 30 that was shown to 60 by October

wishingW3L4043d ago

pre-alpha is from a game that the development just started but the guy on twitter say that the SP campaign has been finished since a couple of months ago.

irepbtown4042d ago

From Article: Asked if the component was finished in a basic form, ter Heide added: “Has been for a couple of months. Had [a] couple [of] playtests already. Getting better every time.”

Key words: Basic form,
Meaning pre-alpha I suppose. I myself would be happy with what they showed at the PS4 conference, however that is bound to improve.

E3 is what to look out for.

r214043d ago

I dont know about you but to me, the graphics were more than great, they were amazing.

MysticStrummer4043d ago

"so the demo we saw at the conference was from the final code..."

Not sure where you got that from, but no it doesn't mean that. I do agree that KZ:SF looks like a very typical shooter gameplay wise though, just like most shooters do. It's what you have to expect when the top selling shooter is Call of Duty, which is incredibly generic.

wishingW3L4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

from the part that say: "has been (finished) for a couple of months". Beta code is basically a finished product, is not like the graphics or gameplay are gonna change. They will just test it for bugs, add some polish and that is it. What we saw on that demo is what we'll get because it's already finished.

Corridors, dumb enemy AI and almost no recoil. This sounds exactly like a Call of Duty game. And not to mention that the slow-mo ability is super tacky and out of place, it seems they are even copying other mediocre games like Crysis instead of being more like Killzone 2.

4043d ago Replies(1)
Hicken4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

What's been with you, recently?

How often does a game's initial release or announcement trailer- especially for a CONSOLE that has yet to release- represent anything NEAR the "final" product.

And if you weren't impressed by the graphics- by this real-time Vektan city that literally CANNOT BE DONE on current consoles, you won't be impressed by anything next gen.

The gameplay wasn't anything spectacular, but how much do you expect the fps to change? I'd rather they just get the gameplay right and maintain the franchise's signature feel than try to do too much to change and wind up being some other game entirely.

Edit: And like people are saying above and below an in response to you, there's plenty of time for things to improve; this just means that you could play through the campaign from start to finish.

Skips4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

"but the guy on twitter say that the SP campaign has been finished since a couple of months ago."

Playable =/= Final Code

"They will just test it for bugs, add some polish and that is it."

You honestly believe they are going to spend 8 months just testing it for bugs?

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW DUDE, JUST WOW.... -_______-

N0S3LFESTEEM4042d ago

Well technically your right considering the last month or so is used for production and shipping. :p

Unless everything was coded by a toddler I doubt their using those 8 months on bug testing alone. Agree.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4
Witcher 3
EA Sports Games

BanBrother4043d ago

They would have been working on this after Killzone 3 in early 2011 or before. Now, what we saw will be old by the time it releases. So basically it can only look better. I really hope Sony invests in the MP and makes a killer 'app' for PS4. It can cement Killzone amongst titles like CoD, Battlefield and Halo for having massive MP appeal.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer154d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138154d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga153d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

153d ago
Notellin153d ago (Edited 153d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem154d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos153d ago (Edited 153d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor153d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies153d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim153d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese153d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto153d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic153d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld153d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie153d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77154d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231153d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein154d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

In August, online servers for several PlayStation games will shut down, leaving their multiplayer functions unplayable.

purple101635d ago

whrere on earth is the next killzone, im soooOOO thirsty for some proper weighted, (but still fast when running/sprinting) fps gamplay, it felt sooso so good on ps3, with that, lets be honest, very small, quite uncomfortable sixaxis dualshock controller, that was just too small for western sized hands, ok for japanese kids i suppose was the point>??

now with PS5 controller, it would be totally masterfull.

ClayRules2012635d ago

I hear you. I want some NEW Killzone, especially on PS5, with the PS5 DualSense controller with that ever so impressive DualSense of an experience Haptic feedback!

Knowing how far Guerrilla has come since Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone can only benefit greatly from their ever growing talent!!

Bobertt634d ago

I think Sony has given up on their exclusive shooters. They haven't released a remaster for the Resistance series or a new SOCOM game either. I don't think Guerilla is in a rush to make Killzone since they have Horizon now too :(.

635d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box635d ago

All I want is for them to build Killzone 2 with multiplayer included from the ground up, keep the gameplay the same, and I'll be happy.

GG with KZ3 and Shafowfall haven't been able to match KZ2 so I don't really have faith in another sequel.

Unfortunate that KZ2 came out during COD era where every game that didn't pay like Modern Warfare was deemed garbage. KZ2's multiplayer is definitely an all time great.

Michiel1989635d ago

since when was kz2 deemed garbage?

MizHDTV635d ago

Right on dude
KZ2 was just a special game to me

sinspirit635d ago

I'd love KZ2 multiplayer again. I also think they could easily incorporate a mode to compete with Battlefield style game modes

Seraphim635d ago

KZ2 was one of maybe a handful of games I actually put time into online. What a blast!! And the campaign was excellent as well. I certainly miss that dark world. Still ashamed I never buttoned up that Platinum.

Storm23635d ago

A remake of Killzone 2 with the same grittiness and feel on PS5 would be f*cking incredible. The SP and MP were just perfect. I played the sh*t out of that game. Would happily pay a lot of money for that.

DarXyde634d ago

Honestly, I don't like FPS games. They're not for me, but I do agree that there was something about KZ2 multiplayer that even someone like me enjoyed.

Sony really needs to get better about tearing down servers. I don't like that they shut them down.

shadowT634d ago

agree, KZ2 was a masterpiece

Muigi634d ago

KZ3 multiplayer was better imo.

Outside_ofthe_Box634d ago (Edited 634d ago )

@Michiel1989
"since when was kz2 deemed garbage?"

As with anything, things don't get the appreciation it deserves until way after it's release.

KZ2 got a lot of flak for it's weighty controls that many mistook for input lag. People didn't like that it wasn't a twitch shooter like CoD. You also had people saying things like "it feels like you're controlling a midget", "enemies take too long to die" (you can't pray and spray in kz2. You have to shoot in bursts for your shots to be more accurate), people complained about the sniping, etc.

This led to a lot of changes in KZ3 that turned the vets off like reducing the amount of variables for bullet damage, getting rid of spawn grenades, etc.

BISHOP-BRASIL634d ago

@DarXyde

I don't think there's much Sony or any other company in that position can do much different about it... Keeping servers running simply cost money, these gomes don't generate none anymore, so eventually they need to pull the plug.

Astrokis634d ago

KZ2 was definitely better then KZ3, but the third one still had strong suits. It’s been many years but I remember something about Shadow Fall being made by a team at GG that did NOT do KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer which is why it felt different. I remember when I found that out it made a lot of sense about Shadow Falls multiplayer feeling so off.

Horizon zero dawn sold more copies than all of the killzone franchise combined including spin offs on handheld. I guess that's the reason why won't see killzone from guerilla soon. There is at least one more mainline horizon coming out and their second team is working on horizon VR I believe. So it's gonna be a while unless another studio takes over.

Profchaos635d ago

I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 on rpcs3 with a duelsense combined with the ability to remap controls to a modern standard and bump the game to 60fps it shows that we really need a remaster to probably the best killzone game to date although shadowfall technically beats it in the graphics department art style was so different that they are incomparable

MizHDTV635d ago

I’d be happy with a release of KZ2

John_McClane635d ago

Killzone went to the same place as Socom and Mag, more money in 25 hour single player games with no servers to maintain. Socom was literally the reason I bought a PS2, Resistance FOM the reason I bought a PS3, all gone now.

senorfartcushion634d ago (Edited 634d ago )

Killzone has never been weighted correctly, the jumping never worked.

A new properly-weighted shooter in the Killzone series would be great. More like Killzone 1 and 2 than SF.

I think the issue comes from the fact that the Helghast side is sympathetic while looking like Nazi stormtroopers. The Trump age has led artists to avoid this look entirely.

I wish Sony didn’t abandon Resistance and Killzone. Those are some of my favorite series on PlayStation. If they’re not gonna make anymore, then maybe a remastered collection of each could be negotiated.

DefenderOfDoom2635d ago

KILLZONE 2 was my reason for buying a PS3. If a new KILLZONE or RESISTANCE was coming out in 22 I would try to buy a PS5 immediately.

Lightning77635d ago

SSOD2 would be big for Sony. The only reason they would be interested in it is if they can turn it into a live service game.

In which I can see that happening.

Profchaos635d ago

After 5 killzone games including portable Sony felt it needed a break I wouldn't say its abandoned however I believe we may randomly get a ps5 remaster with improved lighting to test the waters and eventually a full blown new game after all you can't just leave shadowfall on that ending

I refuse to play for online play but there is one game that would make pay for it and that's Resistance Fall of Man. That's the only game that would make me throw my principles out of the window without feeling ashamed of myself.

Remember in the mid 2000’s when nearly every developer started to do FPS or linear third person? Now nearly every developer wants to do open world exclusively because it’s the easiest type of game to leave things out and then expand upon the world with DLC.

So many fond memories of both Shadowfall and Mercenaries Vita online! Shadowfall's SP may have been weak, but the MP was still a ton of fun. I had a lot of time in both, and it's especially tough seeing the Vita's best mp experience get shut down.

RIP my old friends.

In my opinion, I thought the single player games was really decent too and was treated quite harshly by the critics, but then, I think the Killzone franchise as a whole was kinda under rated by the critics. I always enjoyed the story in these games and I liked the slower, more deliberate gunplay too.

I remember getting my PS4 on day 1 and the first game I installed was Killzone Shadowfall, my workmates and I would play it for hours on end, the mode whish switched between game modes was brilliant.

A world without Killzone Online. That it’s come to this…
