Reboots are counterproductive to the gaming industry

When a long-lasting series becomes outdated, developers often attempt to update it for a new generation. But is the industry holding itself back by rehashing old concepts and ideas?

Which is used a lot despite the fact you can judge something without playing it. I saw plenty of footage for TWO YEARS of the new dmc, trailers, previews, sceenshots, the behind the scene art stuff and it just got worse and worse, I even played the demo and with the way people went on I still couldn't say anything because I hadn't bought it......yeah ok then ¬¬

It depends on the franchise. Some franchises are good, but some decisions might have affected them, and a reboot might renovate them by trying again with fresh ideas. Others might be just trying to milk as much as possible.

In any case though, I prefer new IPs, because they can too become successful franchises

Agreed. Tomb Raider was awesome. The writer of the article agreed with that. A good game is a good game. There are TONS of new IPs that aren't any good.

I'm not sure why the author brings up movies, because the comparison is dissimilar enough that it's not applicable. Not to mention, movie remakes are worse than the original at a MUCH higher rate (at least 90%).

Don't get me wrong, I love delving into a new franchise that's of good quality. However, that does not mean a well done reboot of a beloved franchise does not also have a place. Not every game can be completely unique, nor should it.

There is just no way for every game/series to be separate in gameplay from every other game. I doubt the writer meant they can be, but that's his argument here. There is nothing old fashioned about the Tomb Raider reboot, as the gameplay is almost completely different from the original series.

The argument the writer is making is the exact reason we get crap like motion controls, Kinect, touch screen games, etc. (not saying all of the games for those are bad, but the majority are). All these publishers feel that core gaming will eventually stagnate, so they have to come up with gimmicky new gadgets and methods of play, and I feel that is FAR more counterproductive to the gaming industry than quality reboots.

Instead of coming up with new ideas for new IPs or actually having a worthy sequel to that franchise they decide to reboot them and in the end they turn out to be nothing like the old games which made us fall in love with the game to start with.

Even games that are direct sequels like Max Payne 3 are good but don't live up to the franchise, which in my opinion is bad.

If you are going to change a franchise so much, make a new IP

It's like Prey 2, I hope it dosen't get made with that Bounty Hunter idea. I want a Prey sequel, where I play as Tommy and continue right from the end of the last one. What Prey 2 seems to offer me so far is non of that

I wouldn't mind a reboot on Shenmue for a game. But I agree with what one guy posted here it depends on what franchise some franchises are good some are bad. I liked the reboot they did on Tomb Raider I'm all for the rebooting of old franchises but some of these franchises need a break and allow newer ones to come out. I'm all for new ips and rebooting certain franchises wouldn't mind a reboot on the old Battletoads or Lost Vikings franchise as well lol.

Agreed,I was just thinking Battletoads needs to make a comeback.

IMO it should be public demand that helps determine what games should be rebooted.

Personally I'd love to see reboots of Rogue squadron, Extreme-G, Commander Keen, and Tyrian.

If done right, it can do wonders to a stagnating franchise. There are just a lot of good franchises out there that has been forgotten for so long, that a reboot can be the only way to bring it back to the limelight.
