Series Like Tomb Raider, God of War and Call of Duty Need to Die

"Sequels are like flies, they seem to only show up when you least want them to be around and when one shows up you can expect many more to follow. That isn’t to say that all sequels are bad, because they aren’t all bad. Sometimes games were made to be stretched out over multiple games and console generations. " | Explosion.com

You people need to stop comparing God of War to Call of duty. God of war has had only 4 real installments while CoD has had a yearly release for the last few year. These websites need to die is what I think.

Ezz20134050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

yeah, i agree
why don't who made that article go ahead and say halo and gears and forza and GT and uncharted and Batman etc need to die ..and to hell with those games fans ..right ?!

let those games die because i want too and fans have no right to want more..right?!

gaming media of tose days
smh

jimbobwahey4049d ago

Yeah, it must really suck to be such a wretched human being that you want something that millions of people enjoy to stop existing.

I'll never understand people who whine about things like this.

rpd1234049d ago

The thing that people never seem to understand, is that series are milked because consumers want them to be milked. They'll buy it every year and will more or less enjoy it. It's not publishers fault that people like these games and there is enough demand to make one every year. In God of Wars case, I think Ascension was unnecessary, but there are plenty of people who will love the game.

Winter47th4049d ago

Whoever approved this article needs to die.

ATi_Elite4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

Tomb Raider just got rebooted to a really good game
God of War is too dam good of a SP game
and too many people enjoy COD

so why do they need to Die? Cause they DON'T and this article is STUPID!

What NEEDS to Die is CRYSIS unless they go back to the ORIGINAL CRYSIS FORMAT!!

Survival Horror Games that have NO Horror or Survival need to Die!

Stop making Tennis games No one buys them!!!!

Snookies124050d ago

Lol at the Tennis part... I enjoyed Mario Tennis to some extent. Everything else I agree with you on though. :]

RyuCloudStrife4050d ago

Lol At tennis. I agree with you.

morganfell4050d ago

Cheap websites run by unimaginative adolescents that keep writing "need to die" articles actually need to die.

Derekvinyard134049d ago

Cod is never going to die it sells about 10 million and up in the first week

TopDudeMan4050d ago

Heh, this article was made for shock value. That much is obvious from the title. People coming on here all butthurt about what it says really have to ask themselves what they were actually expecting.

Any article saying "x needs to die" has clearly been made for the sole purpose of pissing people off.

fermcr4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

God of War has 6 installments (2 from the PSP), not counting HD versions for the PS3. God of War needs a rest. 6 games in 8 years (first released in 2005), let Kratos rest for a few years.

As for Call of Duty... it needs a rest, but won't get one because it sells like ****.

Tomb Raider took a break for 4-5 years and returned better then ever. I'll like a new one 2 years from now.

Other games like Halo, Battlefield, Forza, Uncharted, LBP, etc ... also need a rest.

isa_scout4050d ago

God of War has 4 true home cosole releases across both PS2 and PS3(hd collections don't count because they're just re-releases). I believe he needs a rest to though. Not because I think the games are lacking but because he needed more meaningful foes than the furies, but given the fact he's already killed off most of the greek gods and creatures I don't see where they could go forward and still have something worth saying.Kratos had his revenge now it's time for him to bask in the darkness he has created.
Also, I couldn't agree more, Tomb Raider was absolutely amazing, and it was probably the best reboot of a game I've ever played. As long as games like Halo,Gears,Uncharted, and COD make money they will continue to be made, and I'm fine with that because most of those games are pretty damn good. The elephant in the room....Assassins Creed...Who actually still cares about that series???I picked up AC3 on release day and was bombarded with bugs and glitches. Wont be buying abother AC game for a good long while.

SamPao4049d ago

no. just no

If you don't like them, DON'T play them!

let us enjoy our games -.-

kreate4049d ago

There's only 2 god of war games on ps3.

The reason it seems like a lot is becuz there is 3 different platforms. 2 for each console. Which isnt milking it at all.

Im sure there will be 2 more for ps4. And a god of war complete collection towards the end of the cycle.

Mounce4050d ago

Indeed....

Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty and what would be Guitar Hero/Rockband. 1 of those series have already died though.

AC doesn't really have an ending any time soon unless there's a final chapter coming randomly.

jakmckratos4050d ago

It's only getting grouped in there because idiots are just looking for recent games to compare to. God of War has been released about every 3 years..that is MORE than enough for fans of the series. TOmb Raider was an AMAZING game. How anyone could ever say it needs to die...I question their intelligence and their actual passion for gaming. CoD is ridiculous...and look at Halo too... Halo 3, ODST, Wars, Reach, Anniversary and 4 in 5 years??? That's quite a bit no? Honestly I dont think so..as long as the games are quality and add something in terms of gameplay having a game every 2 years sounds great to me!

The only one I agree with COD.
The new Tomb Raider is an amazing fresh experience.
God of War has only received 2 installments on the Ps3. (Not including Collection)

jrbeerman114050d ago

replace god of war and tomb raider with assassins creed

pr0t0typeknuckles4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

i duisagree except for call of duty that does need to die,but tomb raider is better than ever only thing it needs is a few more puzzles, and god of war just needs a longer break and maybe a new setting and character considering kratos and the greek mythology is done, now series that actually need to die are assassins creed, and im a huge AC fan but it needs to either sit out a few years and rethink or be pushed into a grave like it already is,and while i can see some of his points for why he feels GoW and TR should die, I disagree with him and feel that this is a stupid list.

isa_scout4050d ago

Why does everyone want COD to die? Listen I know most of you have some type of beef with Activision, but lets not forget that while Acti does some crazy things with the series(map packs are too frequent and too damn pricey)they have transformed and redefined this generation of gaming. For better or worse COD is here to stay. Personally, I'm glad it is here because it drives competition in the market place. Even if I don't really play that much of the COD games; I cannot deny what it has done for gaming. Gaming has become a huge mainstream hobby, and a big part of that is because everyone knows COD. If you ask your grandma who Kratos is she would probably look at you like you're retarded, but if you ask her if she has ever heard of Call of Duty 9 out of 10 times she'll at the very least have seen a commercial of it. COD took gaming public people. We should show some respect to the series for all that it has done.

csreynolds4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

The only thing we should be thanking Call of Duty for is the saturation of the genre, if not the industry. Your point about Kratos demonstrates the problem precisely; brilliant IPs get overlooked in favour of an uninspired shooter. Moreover, CoD has birthed a community formed primarily of arrogant, abusive adolescents who spew invective at anyone who dare shoot them. This is not a good thing in ANY way.

Thumbs up to pushing eSports and all, but today this franchise is little more than a substandard cash cow that gets sloppier with each new instalment - Black Ops 2 being a prime example. Type 'Black Ops 2 sucks' into YouTube and you'll get more than one million results. To me, that says a lot.

DeadlyFire4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

Its the same reason why EA is worst company in the world my friend. You can't fight it. Its just what people believe. Wether its true or not at the end of the day.

If people wanted them to really die. They wouldn't bother buying them.

Why ask developers to take a break. You are tired of said game then don't buy it's sequels for a few years and you will see a difference when you go back to it a couple of years later. You don't need to own every episode of every TV show you watch do you?

pr0t0typeknuckles4049d ago

COD has done nothing good for gaming at all, developers strive to get COD sells, and its making deb=velopment cost go hich as well as high sells expectations, and now companies are dropping like flies, because of COD games like prince of persia, sly cooper, mortal kombat,spec-ops,etc... get overlooked and dont sell, activisions rehash of call of duty every year actually makes most developers lazy because there like hey if they can release the same game every year with half assed effort then why cant I,and when did i ever say I hated Activision, now i dont like them because of COd and for what they did to spyro and crash, but i dont hate them.

from the beach4050d ago

These are series that have earned their keep by selling millions of copies worldwide. They don't need to 'die', they need to evolve, innovate and stay interesting.

GadgetGooch4050d ago

Seeing as the new Tomb Raider was probably one of the best games i have played in the last 12 month then i hope to god it does not die.

Tomb Raider’s Risky 2013 Reboot Revived a '90s Gaming Icon

Crystal Dynamics' daring reboot of Tomb Raider brought Lara Croft back into the spotlight.

Godmars290397d ago

An attempt at a reboot with no momentum for continuance. Just a torture-porn trilogy about a poor rich girl with daddy issues reluctantly being pulling into a world of violence, versus say the adventures of a quipping Brit treasure hunter who solves ancient puzzles while gunning down rare and extinct animals that it originally was?

Honestly, don't have all that killing. If the devs had been truly clever, not focused on mangling a message about the senselessness of killing which was seemingly and quickly forgotten, they could have worked, if not bloodlessly then not directly by Laura's hand, dealing with enemies as part of the puzzle solving - they didn't have in the game in the first place...

badz149397d ago

"Revived a '90s Gaming Icon"

LOL

the only thing similar between the 2 is the name of the protagonist. if they would have given the game a different name, NONE would even think that it was somehow a resurrected Tomb Raider IP. the last game with the real Tomb Raider DNA was TR Underworld.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness459d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch459d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730459d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior459d ago (Edited 459d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot461d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto459d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior461d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B460d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws460d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730459d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69459d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

The Gamification of Games

Adam Hurd of GameGrin writes: "Gaming is an interactive medium. For decades now we’ve had people criticise the structure of narrative heavy games, for relying on cutscenes to tell the story. In films there’s a phrase: show, don’t tell, the idea that it’s better for the scene to show you what’s going on rather than the characters or text to tell you. In gaming I feel like there should be another rule: do, don't show, the idea that the story should be told through mechanics if possible, instead of in cutscenes."
