Lego City download requires external hard drive on Wii U

Wii U owners who were hoping to download Lego City: Undercover when it comes out next week should know that they will need an external hard drive connected to their console in order to get the digital copy of the game. The download clocks in at 22GB.

WiiU is like a 1996 console built in 2012. c'mon Nintendo, where is your forward thinking?!

LOL_WUT4054d ago

I guess you get what you pay for... ;)

Looks like those 8gb Wii U owners have no choice but to buy the disc version.

PopRocks3594054d ago

Or they can hook up an external HDD. Or did you conveniently forget that that was also an option?

mrbojingles4054d ago

What about a controller with a touch screen (at 480p) on a console that can do 720p/1080p with multiple online services, miiverse, classics for download, 2GB RAM and 32MBeDRAM is so 1996? I think you mean just the lack of a HDD but that's easily fix able on Wii U and quite cheap.

GamersRulz4054d ago

I meant WiiU is Nintendo first step to HD and online gaming. a sane CEO would have known that HD+Online downloads = large amount of Storage needed and yet WiiU is lagging behind in this area. also as a consumer I would be quite pissed off if I start downloading a game and it says " no enough storage available...go buy an external HDD!!"

Nintendo is a prime example of a Japanese company that suffers from bureaucracy management model.

Uh, do you have one? CLEARLY NOT! LMAO....I don't think that a gamepad(even though Nintendo was the first) was even in the cards....back then...clearly you are like 14 YO. Oh and this game is CLEARLY BIG.....

Nevers0ft4054d ago

@GamersRulz
I think the decision to leave out a HD on the Wii U was a wise one. Hard disk prices fluctuate a lot, why have that cost baked into the cost of a Wii U when many people may already have a spare drive they can use or purchase one at a size and cost convenient to them.

I mean, it's not like Nintendo were ever going to throw in a 1TB drive and not charge extra for the console. I'd rather have the choice. Sony pursued a similar idea with the PS3 and it's a damn sight more preferable to the price Microsoft charges for 360 drives.

Wow!
Nevers0ft!
Don't you know? We don't like choice!

We like to be told what to buy!
I want to pay more for a Disk HD that may break down and that I can only use for games!

...Now that I say that out loud... I realize that you were right all along... how could I have been so blind?

"Well Said" Nevers0ft, "Well Said" -I agree with you.

Fine with me. I hooked up 1TB USB drive on day one that actually forgot I had lying around.

lilbroRx4054d ago

2 TB here.

I'm pretty sure they made it clear that they intended for you to use your own HD from before the console even launch.

The only people who going to make a deal about this are Wii U haters who want to make into some sort of issue that is not.

The 32 GB of default storage in the Wii U is more than I have in my 360(came with 20 GB HD) and my PS3 (came with 40 GB but only around 30 is usable for some reason).

I'd be perfectly fine with playing games on all 3 of them of them from my USB drive, but Nintendo is the only one that allows it.

I bought a 2 TB HD at a place out here called Frys (west coast) for $99 and it has auto backup....Lets see a NEXTBOX user do that...oh not going to happen cause you will have to PAY microsoft for the HD and PAY for Live...which will be DEAD...oh yeah and the reason for the DL...the GAME IS BIG!

Zichu4054d ago

Im alright then. Digital Downloads are expensive in the UK on the Wii U. Sticking to physical copies.

Nevers0ft4054d ago

I'm fine with the Wii U Ware pricing but what the hell are they thinking with retail games on the eShop? They're all full RRP unless they're on sale - not exactly enticing when you can buy the disk based version considerably cheaper most of the time.

PopRocks3594054d ago

I was pretty confused by that myself. I guess they're trying to get the most profits possible. Hopefully they can slash prices with time.

thebudgetgamer4054d ago

At least it won't be a proprietary hdd like some companies force you to buy. Still pretty lame.

LEGO City Undercover dev says the team wanted to avoid making a GTA game, scrapped zombie mechanic

LEGO City Undercover may feature an open world, but it’s not overly comparable to Grand Theft Auto. It turns out that this was intentional.

worst justification EVER! it's a LEGO game...you know, where your imagination is the limit, but they limited the game mechanic for as hard as they can. don't get me wrong, I like the game, Platinumed it on the PS4 BUT the game has so much potential but they also put so many restrictions into the game, I feel all the time I should be able to do something but the devs decided that I can't.

oh and yes...the draw distance SUCKS in this game even on PS4. I can understand if it's ground-up made for the new-gen but this is a Wii U port, the PS4 should have no problem running rounds around this game but the devs just didn't care. tons of collectibles but most of the time, hampered by the terrible draw distance and texture pop-ins. and not to forget constant crashing, glitches, collectibles not registering, and trophy glitch...very frustrating! I had to do a 2nd run just to Platinum this thing due to the story trophy glitch! My advice, if you are gonna play this game co-op, the drop-in drop-out nature of the game will make you lose you chance for story trophies if you're not there from start to finish. the way the story mission is not setup properly to chapters is also annoying as hell.

Gameseeker_Frampt977d ago

Either you can't read or you really do think that you should be able to shoot people with guns in a LEGO game since that is the game mechanic that "they limited." Perhaps use your imagination next time and imagine that you are shooting people with guns GTA style in a LEGO game.

LEGO City Undercover is an amazing game and one of the best in both LEGO games and games on the WiiU (except for the load times).

badz149977d ago

There is a ray gun in the game and it can shoot anything to make things explode. I don't remember much but you can shoot people with ray hun too, right? Lego Marvel super hero and batman 2 are way superior than this game

ToddlerBrain977d ago

Lego zombies would have been amazing.

ElementsUnknown977d ago (Edited 977d ago )

Where is the sequel for this game?! So many believe this is the best lego game yet there has been no follow up. Did LCU not sell well? Are the licensed games more profitable? What gives?

LEGO City Undercover devs talk Nintendo's role on the game, company was "very, very involved"

LEGO City Undercover was a pretty big deal when it first appeared on Wii U close to a decade ago. It was planned as one of the system’s first major games, and was even published by Nintendo.

Still my favorite Lego game. Minus the load times. Yikes. Lol

Germaximus985d ago

Game is amazing. Are there any other Lego games like it? The other ones I played were nowhere nearly as good.

badz149984d ago

They purposely put restrictions on your movements for the sake of collectibles. I still think that LEGO Batman 2 and Lego Marvel Superheroes are the best ones
