Masahiro Sakurai, the fellow in charge of the Smash Bros. project for the 3DS and Wii U recently spent some time with the online mode for Smash Bros. Brawl and, unfortunately, found himself disappointed...
Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros., explains why he believes online play isn't a good fit for the series.
I feel bad for Smash fans. Those guys have been trying to maintain the scene active for 20+ years and get nothing but hate from Nintendo.
Sakurai explains how he and Nintendo still don't understand how the internet works.
FTFY
I’m sorry, but if a game is MP then there’s no f*cking argument that can justify no online MP. What he says about competition being different from just playing with friends shows me how out of touch these people are.
It’s not until a new generation that understands things steps in to clean-house that we’ll see some evolution here.
It's a big fighting game so online multiplayer is a must. Competitive smash is the only thing I see fun in these games anymore asides from the big character reveals, singleplayer is laughable and you ain't gunna have people over for couch gaming much.
If Nintendo makes a new smash, it needs a huge evolution for singleplayer/couch play to be enjoyable for me any more. But we all know they'll just do a deluxe edition for their next console lol. They really need to up their servers as well.
he sounds more like is trying to justify Nintendo ineptitude to create a proper network infrastructure in order to Smash Brothers work properly online.
Back in January, fans of Smash Bros Melee got treated to an online tournament event and now it's time for a Brawl-themed tournament event in Ultimate.
In a relatively short time, Generation VI's Ninja Pokémon has become wildly popular, outpacing nearly 900 other Pokemon.
hopefully that rumor the nintendo will release a beta on the day of their E3 conference is true cause that can help improve the online play for launch
I totally agree with sakurai on players who wait to be attacked. . thats puss . .. ive been through many players who do like that. just imagine, you set up a match, and when it comes time to duel the other player waits for you to attack 1st, leaving your guard open. anyone can do it like that. pussy-toe stuff . .
i disagree with sakurai about the items though. When it comes to competitive play, items should not be used. .
Here's 1 player getting jumped by 3 others caught on tape.
Bullying like this makes for online enjoyment nearly impossible.

I've encountered that issue before as well. Really douchey players who just jump up and down or sit idly by are really lousy players. It's frustrating because they're not playing the game properly. Hopefully in the next game they will have the option of 1v1 matches only.
This makes me hope all the more that the online beta rumor for Smash Bros. is true.
Having more than 2 players should nullify stats, just play because you want to play in a fun multiman FFA match. 1v1 would be the comptetitive match-up, since you have to fight sooner or later. Also competitive only on Stock match, don't want people getting one kill then evading for 2-3 minutes.
Have a "light" online mode: full items, 4 players, kill system, no stats
Then a "heavy" online mode: no items, 2 players, 5 stock, record stats
People could host their own custom matches where they pre-set items, gametype, and other features. Miiverse for mini-tourney's. They key is to not throw together a multiplayer online mode, but to fully flesh it out. Make it a core feature
They need to make Lobbies that way it's easier to find matches with like minded players.
