im a gamer first and formost but I know people who purchased a ps3 because it was the cheapest blu ray player available for a long time. Nowhere did I say it should be MS' s focus or sonys main focu.

I use my ps3 for games and my xbox for its few exclusives but mainly for sky player as that service is exclusive to the 360 here in in-ger-land.

Ask yourself, how much time do people spend on their iphones actually talking to people? People buy smartphones because they do so much more and gamers who used to buy dedicated devices just for gaming also want more out of their consoles.

I am part of the minority who buys a console mainly for the games but at the same time I don't ignore the trends out there.

I browse the web and use apps on my iPod Touch more than I listen to music on it. People use their phones for texting and Facebook more than they actually make phone calls. And I use my game consoles for movies, music, web browsing, TV, and other stuff besides games.

Just because something has a "main function" doesn't mean that the "secondary" ones can't be used and enjoyed just as much or even more.

It's not wrong exactly, but it is amusing to see this kind of talk from MS and their fans now. PS3's extra entertainment capabilities were derided for awhile, until 360 got some of those same functions, then suddenly they were desirable and cool. That went along well with N4G's 360 fans switching from the "PS3 has no exclusives" shtick to the "exclusives aren't important" shtick. People are funny.

Eventually someone here will probably claim MS originated the idea of a multimedia console, just like Kinect had nothing similar to evolve from according to some people.

This 'extra entertainment' isn't just limited to the nextbox. The PS4 will be an entertainment hub also.

But I think it won't be the main focus of the PS4, it will be just as capable (without the kinect which we can all do without) instead it will be present but Sony don't have to shout about it.

All of my Live Information for the past 10 years will transfer to Next Box 720.

See, we actually KNOW stuff about the next Playstation, including a handful of the games at launch. Sure, there will be assumptions, and those are based on what Sony is doing RIGHT NOW. The same can be said of assumptions based on Microsoft's actions RIGHT NOW: they're going to be more focused on the casual, on social apps and services, and gaming will be secondary.

If you don't see a difference between the two companies, in a gaming capacity, then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, it'll be best to have both. Don't think anybody's arguing that. But if you can only have one, it doesn't make sense for a gamer to get a console that isn't focused first on games.

Edit: Being focused on games means putting games at the forefront of the console's functions. Isn't that obvious?

Who cares if you're not enthused by the recent exclusives. Plenty of people will be, and that's the point: Sony makes sure to cater to everybody. Not just me, not just you. You like racing games? Great: you don't have to rely simply on third parties, as Sony fields numerous titles of their own.

It's not just about the game, but about MORE of them.

Sony's being in the red, by the way, is due to poor management in other divisions not directly related to gaming. Or are you going to be one of those people that stupidly insists their current situation is ALL on the gaming front?

If the games- and gaming-related features- are there, if the support from the manufacturer is there, I'll buy any system. Sony caters to me the MOST, but I don't shut out the idea of buying other consoles.

But when you look at the three makers, Microsoft is, by far, the WORST at giving gamers what they want. Some people are satisfied- I struggle not to call them SIMPLE- with the small bit of support they give their own system, with being charged to play online and access services they already have a bill for.

I want more than that. As long as Microsoft is showing me their FOCUS is elsewhere, I'll be sure to spend my money- and do my gaming- elsewhere.

@Hicken What does focused on games even mean? That they have their own first party studios and make a ton of games I might not even care about? One of the biggest reasons I even got a PS3 was for the super duper awesome exclusives I just had to have and two of them came out in the last two weeks and I have zero interest. And I don't know, the PS4 sure looked focused on updating Facebook statuses. See how easy it is to play that game?

Meanwhile, on my Xbox 360, I'm enjoying a ridiculous amount of games that I literally do not even have the time for. Does the fact that they are dirty multi-plats make me a bad person? I play the games I enjoy, without regard to what platform they happen to land on, and when they are on both, I get them on the 360 because I enjoy the 360 substantially more. And guess what... there is absolutely ZERO shortage of games to play on the Xbox 360.

If the new Xbox plays video games, there is absolutely ZERO reason to believe this is going to change. So what if Microsoft looks for other audiences and not just the gamer. Good for them. You're all over the map. You were never a supporter pre-Kinect and you're certainly not post-Kinect. So like DarthJay asked, what does focused on games even mean?

All this guy does is talk about Sony. Whether it's in Sony articles and making sure nobody says anything negative or in Microsoft articles telling everyone how Sony is doing such a better job. Its funny because MS didn't turn the Xbox into a media box over night it wasn't just a random decision they up and made one day.

It was the consumers, buyers, mainstream that turned Xbox into a media box so don't point fingers at MS point fingers at the people. Mainstream decided to do other things besides gaming on Xbox and all MS did was shift to the market. That market that Sony wanted and predicted at the beginning of the current gen.

MS isn't posting "An ___X % of people are using Xbox for none gaming" for no reason. MS is adapting to that % of users who aren't gaming which is a large % I might add.

I use my ps3 and 360 for more then games. I still feel like the real winners our the ones who get both. If you don't you will be missing out on great games; and through all this noise that is what it really is about the games. To favor one is fine and all but the fact of the matter is their is great games and all systems and I just hope everyone gets a chance to play some of them! Ps3 has more entertainment apps than Xbox and you don't have to pay twice to use them. Blu-ray along sets it miles ahead. You can also download movies from the browser(stagevu anyone?). Plus the FAT has card readers. I just don't see how the Xbox is his prime entertainment system when it lacks all that. The article doesn't even mention why he likes the Xbox 360, it's just him saying way they aren't good in the gaming department. So if he's talking next-gen if its anything like this you'll be getting great exclusives along with more entertainment from the ps4...

The Wii U drive is little more than a bluray drive without the codecs needed for movie playback. This is just what they did with the Wii and it's DVD drive.

The Xbox will have a bluray drive, but like the Wii U it may not play movies, at least not until the hackers get their hands on it.

It just makes no sense to create an entirely new disk format. The costs of the drive, media and media production would be several times higher then just using off the shelf bluray.

Everyone seems to forget that the PS3 also has a exclusive component not found on any other console to date that also sets it apart as a true entertainment powerhouse... i.e. the only console with true digital 7.1 surround sound capability. Watching a blockbuster movie or playing Killzone 3 in 7.1 and in 3D is a step beyond imho.

Why would you need an Xbox for if you are a PC gamer? Almost all Xbox exclusives end up on PC. The WiiU I can understand because those exclusives are only on that system.

Maybe because the exclusives on Wii U/PS3 don't appeal to that person. Not everyone loves Mario/Zelda/Uncharted/Killzone etc. you know. There's a reason why the 360 sold 70+ million units. Some people just love their Halo or Gears of War. I'm a PC gamer with a 360, and honestly, none of the exclusives on any console make me want them anymore.

I bought a PS3 specifically for SOCOM. I played SOCOM 2 for 6 years straight and hardly anything else. Once SOCOM died, I got rid of my PS3. I kept my 360 for Forza (I've never cared for GT so don't bring it up) and switched to PC gaming. OMG those people exist I know. Crazy someone else likes something you don't.

Nope, I LOVED Heavy Rain, LBP & MAG. I use to love Gears of War but now I'm sick of it. Fable I still enjoy but those are on PC. The real only exclusive I like on 360 is Forza. Everything else I can do without or play on PC. I could have gone without playing those PS3 exclusives I mentioned and been fine, but like I said, I'm a HUGE SOCOM fan so I couldn't miss out. Sadly, every game since SOCOM 2 has been crap. Had Zipper not screwed up their own series, and continued it on PS4, I would probably never switch to PC nor bothered ever getting an Xbox.

I used to be the same, but unfortunately I have limited time and money to afford both, unless Microsoft blow me away at their reveal. There is a lot I want to fulfill in my life, as well as getting out of some of the troubles (mostly money related) in my life. I can't see myself getting both consoles again, at least not until one is cheaper down the road.

If I had the money, I would no doubt get both straight up. But I learned the hard way that as you get older, life gets harder. I miss not having a care in tne world and not being stressed out all the time. MS have some work to do, let's see if they can surprise us (or at least me).

I will definitely get the next xbox. The main reason is BC, which is most likely going to be included in the next xbox. I have over 100 Xbox 360 games so able to play it on one unit is a blessing for me. Imagine playing GTA5 and minute later load up Forza 5 in one smooth transition.

This is not a knock on PS4, of course, as I do have a PS3 and PS2 but that system can wait another year when it is cheaper.

I have an idea of what the PS4 will be about, but have very little info about the next Xbox. Therefore I'm more curious about the next Xbox.

I'm a more rounded entertainment consumer, where I play games, read books, listen to music and watch movies as well *when* I get time.

So a well rounded approach with ease of use, i.e. get me in and out fast is going to win for me. One of the main reason I use Xbox Live is because it is far easier to schedule a game among friends. Just jump into party chat while I play something else.

So if Sony offers up that better than MS, I'm in for it. However, I do not want a dedicated gaming device. I want a well rounded device that hopefully can replace my living room PC.

I agree a 100%. I want a system that does it all seamlessly without having to use different device. If I wanted a dedicated gaming system that just play games. I would get a 3ds. I do hope the next xbox does B/C.which would be a definite win in my book for me.. So I can get rid of my old console. I dont want too many devices hooked up to my tv since I will be upgrading my pc soon.

Edit: I'm still hoping that MS puts a HVD player in the next xbox so dev's wont be crying about disk space in a couple of years and they can support 4k movies when tvs become cheaper

Well said. I can not in anyway buy a console that all it does is play games. I have a job, a good social life and very active so never really have the time to dedicate to games like i used to. But i want my gaming device to be an all round entertainment system. I have a standalone media player which is much better than any htpc..it plays 3Diso mvk avi and any format u can throw at it. Hooked to my 3D tv with hdmi 1.4 has 7.1 channel sound plus it has 1000s of streaming channels. Cost 250usd cheaper than any htpc. Also can load up Android os which is built in. ..also had all other online apps like YouTube Picassa radio channels

That sounds good, but why are you so sure that it's better than an XBMC-based HTPC?

XBMC will also play pretty much any format you can name. It has plugins for things like YouTube, etc. too (I don't use them, but I know they're available).

My XBMC HTPC is an Acer Revo 3610, which cost me about $250. And that was three years ago. So it's absolutely bogus for you to suggest that your player was cheaper than mine.

I don't know if XBMC has 3D support, but I don't have a 3D TV anyway, so it doesn't make a difference to me. A decent music visualiser is much more important to me, and XBMC has ProjectM built-in, which is one of the greatest music visualisers ever created.

How does the music visualiser in your standalone media player compare to ProjectM?

I find it hard to more interested in a console where we have absolutely no idea what exclusives it might have coming for it at launch. Exclusives do matter though, the last few years it has been a handful of exclusives on the 360 while the ps3 has a bagful each year which are much better spread out too instead of just focusing around the holidays period.

I really don't think there will be much in it next gen with the consoles however as a passionate gamer and as an early adopter, my console of choice will be down to which one has the best games and that will come down to exclusives.

MS just need to make sure they have a system that is just as powerful as the PS4 and let’s not forget they already have a better stable online gaming system, but they could always improve this.

Let’s not forget the PS3 had terrible connection issues and it was slow updating and some games made you mandatory install, I sometimes felt like a PC gamer .

For me the 360 was a better pure gaming machine, so most things were good from MS on this gen.

MS does need more good exclusives, if they can do this then it might be the same story with Sony behind MS, but only time will tell.

Most new bluray players have also this option with it's Smart Tv functions. And let's not forget all the multimedia boxes you can buy.

I think people are just worried that MS will focus too much on entertainment applications and have games as a secondary feature. Whereas with Sony, even though they have also added entertainment features, they have never forgotten about their core fan base and always supply a stream of good quality games. While Sony have been bringing AAA first party games this generation MS have been working on building relationships with TV companies and movie streaming services so it's easy to see what they're focusing on right now.

Obviously only time will tell and we'll soon find out what Microsoft have planned. As a multi-console owner myself I hope Microsoft have something huge planned for next gen. Competition between MS and Sony will only benefit us gamers :)

None of us need a smart TV anymore, as we already have them, and if not we have blu-ray players, and game consoles that do most of the same things, such as Hulu, Netflix, Pandora. At least with the Wii U its nice to have the gamepad, Nextbox is not even on my radar, just look at the games this year for 360 Microsoft has clearly put all of its focus on 720 and put 360 in its past. Sony is getting ready for PS4 and they are putting out some killer games this year.

I Spent $100 on a 2 terabyte Hard drive for my Wii U, on sale at a place out here on the West Coast called Fry's. As long as it doesn't crash I am good for the entire life of Wii U, and PS4. Why I'm not interested in the next xbox:

Red ring of death: Right now I have my 3th xbox. MS has a lot to prove until I purchase day 1 hardware from them.

Pay to play online: Really, that we have to pay in 2013 to play online is completely ridiculous, MS better do something about it, online play has to be free.

PS+: Sony gives you so much more than MS on PS3, so many free games and discounts thatPS+ is a must, and it can only improve with PS4.

Vita remote play: I have a Vita and I love it. PS4 remote play at home is a killer feature for me, many times wife/kids are using the TV, now I can play my games anywhere at home. Together with the ability to suspend a game and resume where you left, it's tailor made for playing a few minutes here and there on the Vita without having to boot the full console or wait for a checkpoint.

Motion gaming, I couldn't care less: It looks like MS is going all for for Kinect 2, sorry but I don't care about motion gaming anymore.

So MS better blow my mind away or I'm all PS4 this next gen.

I'll say this, when I first got into this generation back in 2005 I only used my Xbox 360 for gaming. Over the years though I have found that there is much more a gaming console can and should offer.

Now I find that I still game as much, if not more than I ever have before, but I also can enjoy the entertainment and other things available. People act as if Microsoft is the only one to offer these things, but I originally bought a PS3 because it was a cheap Blu Ray player, and it had some nice streaming features with my Tversity server.

IMO, A gaming machine should always be a gaming machine. It's like phones these days. It's nice that I can play games on my phone, but I really wish I could make CLEAR CALLS more often. When you spread yourself too thin, then your machine looses its main focus. This is where I think Microsoft messed up. The nextbox will be a media hub rather than a gaming machine first.

Sony knows that gaming is in their roots. They added the other features, but made sure that their machine plays games as best as possible. Same goes for Nintendo. Nintendo sticks to having their console play games. Not dvds or Cds, but GAMES! A game consoles main thing should be games...All the other features are just fluff or bonus things.

If you guys bought a gaming machine for the other features, then that's fine too. several people have a ps3 and only use it for netflix. It's your money and opinion. Do what you want.

A standard DVD player ADD ON, compared to PS3 built in Blu-Ray.
Youtube, Netlfix, and Hulu Plus, all require a GOLD membership, as well as subscription costs, while the PS3 (And Wii/Wii U) all have those for just the subscription.

Maybe he meant entertainment as in gaming, which doesn't make much sense either, seeing both Sony and Nintendo have a wider variety of 1st party titles, and PC can destroy all in terms of game size (64 player BF3.)

I don't care if the Nextbox ends up having more (nongaming) entertainment deals, I buy gaming consoles for games first and foremost.

The PS4 will have Netflix and Blu-ray and those are the only entertainment features that I really care about (I do use other ones, but not to the same extent). This, on top of their more numerous exclusives, has me leaning toward Sony for the next-gen.

I'm well aware that the Nextbox has not been revealed yet, that's why I haven't said that I WILL be buying a PS4, only that I'm LEANING toward it. However, recent years have shown me a MS that focuses more on Kinect, entertainment deals (deals which require a subscription on top of your Live subscription), advertisements, and DLC contracts, instead of a strong focus on 1P development. As a heavy gamer, I have not been impressed by them.

I am looking forward to the Nextbox reveal and E3 and all the games that will be revealed; however, if they want my money, then they are going to have really impress me.

Ill stick with my Xbox! Ive got plenty of so called PS3 friends who have switched to Xbox and I call every last one of em out. The last one told me they would eventually use their PS3 again once GOW came out, lol! Its the law of economics. PS3 is from Japan and it was only a matter a time before a US based company(Xbox) decided to play their hand and join the console war. Now Xbox is the most sold console in the US and Playstation knows it, which is why they debuted their controller and a few game screen shots here in NY instead of Tokyo like they usually do. I think the next Xbox is gonna be awesome which is why their keepin a low profile. PS playstation move is gay and om not pointing a dildo at my TV to use it.

I doubt many third party publishers the next generation will want to make special deals. That would be a big money loser. The PS4 will end up with a lot more sales so why sign a deal with Microsoft? Is Microsoft going to give them all $100 million to be exclusive to them? It would cost a lot to get it. Nobody would do it for a mediocre $10 million.

The entertainment aspects of the XBOX360 don't appeal to me as a selling point when there are many devices that can do the same and not hidden behind a pay-wall. Since, this time around the specs are almost the same the 3rd party software is going to be a wash. So it comes down to the exclusives and has of right now Sony as way more in it's stable. The new Xbox needs to wow and I don't mean gimmicks like Kinect 2.0 or that rumored room projector thingy.

I sure don't mind any media center features on consoles. It's stupid not to add them now days. But Microsoft seems to be dumping their gaming base in the pursuit of "entertainment" and Kinect garbage. Microsoft didn't invest a damned thing into game studios like Sony has. Aside from Halo/Gears/Forza it's all multiplats. Unless Microsoft has some hidden cards to play the next Xbox looks very uninteresting.

Everyone's bashing Microsoft before they've shown their hand, its better to be a bit cautious. What if Microsoft shows off four or five mind blowing new IPs at their event and turns around and says our machine can also do the entertainment thing as well as play those games? There's going to be a lot of sheepish people out there.

Sony did a good presentation on ps4 but the two games that I remember are killzone which looked nice but didnt look like it was going to change the way we play games in the future and watch dogs which is multiplat anyway.

Microsoft don't have to produce the second coming of Christ to get my attention back, they just need some new things and some next gen sequels to old classics and they're back in the game.
