The PlayStation 4 Looks Great… But Don’t Expect it to Sell as Well as the PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 4 — and any console, for that matter — is unlikely to sell as well as consoles did in previous generations due to the current state of the industry.

Here’s my predictions for the PS4 and why the state of the industry will mean consoles will struggle this generation.

We've just come off the back of the most successful console generation ever. All 3 consoles could hit 100 million units sold which is absolutely unprecedented and a remarkable achievement.

PS4 has done everything right so far and looks to be an incredible machine, incredibly supported. Claiming it will sell 60 million in its life time is laughable

Not a chance. The PS3 will obviously sell well and dominate next gen. The next Xbox won't come close to the Xbox 360's installed base.

The PS3 still hasn't had the all important price drop to $199 worldwide. That is the price the PS2 went on to sell some 90 million more consoles when it was already at 70 million worldwide.

There are still 5-7 years of sales left for the PS3 and it is selling at the same yearly rate as the 160 million selling PS2 - about 11 million consoles a year.

PS2 14 years * 11 mil/yr ~160 million
PS3 7 years * 11 mil/yr ~78 million

The next Xbox has virtually no chance of selling the same number of units as the Xbox 360. The next Xbox won't have the luxury of the RRoD fiasco inflating Microsoft's worldwide installed base numbers by millions and millions of console like this gen.

@above- I agree with your points but consider Xbox was rushed and had a lot overheating issues and the ps3 was "high priced" and on top of everything the WIi was dominating. There's no way they can be worse off than that. Each company has grown in their own respects and I see a big future for both.

Keep in mind we know nothing about the next Xbox and little about the ps4. There's no way we can say the next Xbox will have weaker graphics or either will "win".

The funny thing about the article: apparently NOW the PS3 sold great this gen but the PS4 won't sell as well. Oh well shoot darn! And here I thought the PS3 was selling so poorly. At least, that's what gaming journalism wanted me to believe. I guess now that we hav a new Sony console coming out, it's easier to make baseless accusations against it instead of mocking a console that - against all the naysayers - managed to sell quite well this past gen.

The market hasn't really grown much since the PS2 days. PS2 still has sold more than PS3 and 360 combined, it will take a while before the current gen consoles outsell the total combined PS2/Xbox1 sales.

Currently there's no data or evidence that would support the idea that next gen consoles won't sell as well as current gen consoles. It's just based on nonsense and some internet troll's desire for hits on his website.

The point he is trying to make is that most consoles that launched above the $600 ended up cancelled. But the PS3 is the first console in history to launch at that price and still survived until now and manage to sell 77m world wide.

It isn't quite as impressive as you might think; didn't it sell relatively poorly until it was dropped to $400 and then sold even better than that when it was dropped down to it's current price? While it may still be the more expensive of the bunch, it offers more for the current price point than the alternatives do at more expensive costs.

The PS3 grants a hard drive 250GB, and a few even 500GB, for $250-$300 while you have to pay $300 to get the 360 with the 250GB HDD. So while it is more expensive, it isn't by much considering how much bang for your buck you get. When it was $600, it sold horribly because that bang was considerably less than what XBox was offering at release despite the hardware issues.

I know its VG charts but considering the xbox had no competition its first year, (next-gen competition)while the ps3 was competing against a console that was $200 cheaper, I would say that it's pretty impressive what the ps3 accomplished in its first year pre-price cut.

Also the ps3 was the cheapest way to get a blu ray player at the time, so you good say that this console had the most "bang for your buck" when it launched even at its price.

Okay I agreed with you when it came to the money pit that is Microsoft but Nintendo is making an effort to come back. If anything I see Sony ruling this next generation with Nintendo being in second place and why? Because Mario sells, Zelda sells, Metroid sells, and it is getting core multiplatform games on it. Sony however will have stronger exclusives more to my liking and it will also have core multiplatformers as well. Whether anyone wants to agree with this statement as we or not, Nintendo has been around since Generation 3 of gaming and has is not going away anytime soon. I am just worried Sony will make the same mistake with the PS3, which I doubt because they removed the backwards compatibility which is a plus. Anything to make the console cheaper is better for me. The PS4 from what I understand is going to have Knack, Infamous 3, an unnamed Final Fantasy title which will be revealed at E3, Witch Hunter 3, and Watch Dogs. From what I understand these games are going to be at launch or near the launch window. What did we have at the PS3's launch? Resistance Fall of Man, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (a Port of Black), Heavenly Sword, and Sonic 06. Yeah the PS2 backwards compatibility kept that thing running because if it wasn't there the PS3 would of died the year it was released. Yeah the PS3 got a lot better and in fact I am in love with the system, but going off and saying that the PS4 will not do as good as the PS3 because of a few minor changes is a blanket statement.

Also, who is telling this guy that most gamers are leaving their consoles in favor of PCs? Some people do get into PC gaming but there are games that do not go on the PC; exclusives sell systems along with the multiplatformers. If you cannot get it on the PC you will have to get it on the console of choice or unless you somehow mod your PC to play console games which in the end will cost you more in the long run.

Also the copycat games he mentions are not the consoles fault, that would be the fault of the developers of the games. No one can predict generation 8 and I wish people like this guy would stop trying. The PS4 is going to do fine and I hope the Vita picks up.

I'm going to get most of my games on the PC if it's available. However, the majority of PS4 games will be exclusive or something that I feel is worth it to get the PS4 version (IE: Battlefield 4) just to play with friends.

PS4 will be fine. I see no reason why the price would be $599. $499 or $399 is more likely and I'm fine with both prices.

If Sony keeps buying Teams like they are, the PS4 will sell more then the PS3, easy. Sony is looking to duel support consoles JUST like they did last gen. I see them doing it better next gen with PS3 too.

That number isn't nearly as large as PC gamers think it is. Most people playing games on their PC won't bother building a PC just for gaming. Some may add memory, some may upgrade their sound or graphics card, and a few will do more than one of those, but most will play games on their stock PC. You can't leave out all those stock PCs just because you want to prove a point. Most PCs being used by human beings on planet Earth won't be able to keep up with PS4 for awhile. Deal with it.

You're also putting words in my mouth. I'm well aware of the fact that the PS4 will kick most PC's asses, but saying that a PS4 will best a well equipped PC at the same task is incorrect (and by well equipped, I mean a upper-mid to high-end rig).

@BitbyDeath What you just said makes no sense. With increasingly fast hardware, developers can do more and more with it. For the last 5 or so years, it been increasingly evident that consoles were used as the performance baseline for games. A multi-platform game like Just Cause 2 HAS to run on a console, and thus - sets the bar of limitation on what they can do with the game. Meanwhile, on the PC side, you have all this extra performance to work with. So what do you do? You improve the graphics.

What devs are excited about now is that they have a much higher bar of limitation. Their target is no longer 512 MB of RAM and a GPU from 2005. It's now 8 GB of RAM and a modernized low-power CPU/GPU combo. Now these multi-platform developers can start doing the things they've been wishing they could for years, but couldn't due to the lack of performance form current gen consoles.

I don't want to discount what you say, but this is why it's so hard to compare PC's to console from a power perspective. A vast majority of PC's that exist in the home are those off the shelf brands, and many of those are the cheaper ones that run less than $500 complete with monitor and printer. There's a reason why those cheap computers take up half the shelf space at the big box stores, because they sell.

A custom built gaming rig, that many on here may have and see as the supreme game machine, will have a more powerful system than any console coming out this year, even if it's a year old, but for the average person with one of those cheap computers will probably get a better experience on a console because of it's refinement to the hardware. Even among the custom built users, there is a big difference in performance among their machines.

I think both PC and consoles have their advantages, as well as exclusives, and the griping among the community over it is bothersome, particularly since it's likely most of the people posting comments probably have both already(outside mobile posters of course).

That is exactly my point.
PC's best game Crysis 3 is multiplatform and therefore limited by the technologies of today (current consoles and older PC's).

PS4 may be considered as a midrange PC, but gaming wise we are yet to see what a midrange PC can actually do.

Well last year I bought a toshiba laptop which i regret now for $400 & in all honesty even with 2gb of ram 512mb & 350gb hdd & i dont think it would be able to run crysis 3 as smooth as the ps3 or 360 version. My point is the ps4 is considered a high end pc because its capable of generating crysis like graphics & will run at a smooth frame rate for the cost of $400 to $500 and u know devs will take full advantage of it because not everyone can AFFORD a high end pc.

Let me put in my 2 cents about the whole Pc thing.

First. of all Ps4 games graphics look just as good as any Pc game currently out right now Pc's are currently advertising multiple monitor setups which Console gamer don't really care and most pc gamers don't either, I know i dont just give me 1080p and a good frame rate and ill be set.

Second. Ps4 will use GDDR5 video ram just like current gpus it wont be as powerful as high end cards but that not up for dispute as only a small % of pc gamers even have a high end card and its shared with the ram so i dont know how much better the ram will be from Pc's .

Third . It doesn't matter if your Pc is 10 gens ahead of consoles the games you play on them are current gen so you are playing current gen games on your PC.

Also i did some research on the best/fastest components for a pc since you brought up the being miles ahead of console and a pc with
AMD 8 core ( intel doesnt have 8 core cpu's) + Asus Motherboard+nvidia Gtx 690+Blu ray drive+ 12gb ram (fast ram and since everyone brags about 12 gb of ram i chose 12 gb) + OS +case it all comes out to $2000+ or you could spend 400-500 on a console that will be good 5-6 years down the road

Pc are more advanced than consoles and always will be but people just want to play games not sit the and find out how many FPS they are getting

The PS2 sold 160 million over 14 years.
The PS3 has sold 78 million over 7 years and it still has 5-7 years of sales to go.

PS2: 160/14 years == 11.4 million consoles a year
PS3: 78/7 years == 11.14 million consoles a year

And that is for a system that has been double the price of the PS2. Even more amazing is the PS3 still hasn't hit the all important 199 price worldwide yet where the PS2 went on to sell 90 million more consoles.

PS1 squashed N64 because the N64 stuck with cartridges and developers didn't support it because of that. Newer games were taking advantage of the CD storage, and Nintendo refused to adapt because of their fallout with Sony.

PS2 squashed the GameCube because it was coming off the success of the PS1 and had huge development support. The GameCube while superior technologically, just didn't get enough games to make it appealing. With the original Xbox it went up against a very strong install base for PS2, and couldn't gain ground against it.

Sega screwed up everything with their console releases on the Saturn and DC and support during those two generations which is why they couldn't manage to compete.

This gen, Sony had huge competition from MS and Nintendo, yet somehow managed to sell roughly the same numbers as the prior gen. It hasn't squashed anything, but overall it hasn't really lost anything either. The market just got bigger, and with a bigger market, more companies can thrive.

Formats make systems. Though Bluray made the PS3 cost a lot, the PS3's biggest games just couldn't be done without it.

If it wasn't for a bigger format, FFVII as we know it would had never been made. Sony would had never got into the games market etc.

Weather you like Sony or not, as a gamer you got to give em a hand. If it wasn't for this company and Nintendo's moves against them, how we see gaming today may have never been.

Gamecube only had that format because Nintendo was now up against a real foe. It was time to truly compete.

Now if you think that 3D gaming was really at its "heights" with the N64, remember this. FFVII was canned on N64 once that deal with Sony fell through, it was such a major deal to Square to have this game made, they left one of there biggest partners (mind you one they once worked along side them for Mario RPG) to go to a company with a track record of zero in gaming. FFVII couldn't be done one N64, not in anyone's wildest dreams. If they made it, it would had been a different game, as in NOT FFVII as you know it.

Mind you FFVII launched on 3 damn disc!!!

So N64 is 8 times the space as NES.

PS1 is somewehre around 94 times the space of NES. Its quite clear when gaming as we know it today began to truly reach its heights. Most didn't even know game systems could even reach 100 million units in sales.

PS1 because of its format is STILL today one of gaming's biggest leaps in history. I don't think we will ever see such a leap again.

Just to let you know how big that is in terms of todays standards, thats like PS4 having a bluray disk of 9TB and a game coming out using 3 disk.

I think we wont see any console near the 100 million mark again. It isn't just the tablet and smartphone issues, it's that we'll probably see a shorter console cycle and that will limit sales in the end. I figure all three consoles will sell around 10-12 million a year for 5 years.

At the end of the day, as long as all the companies sell enough to keep going in the market I'm happy. Otherwise numbers and sales don't matter to me. I've had some of my best gaming moments with consoles or games that tanked compeltely.

The fact is that the next generation of game consoles will not be very appealing to the casual market for a number of reasons.

Both the PS3 and Xbox360 already feature many popular mainstream features and apps like Netflix ,Facebook etc.

The casual market non gamers will look at the PS4 and XboxNext and see the features and think "My PS3 / Xbox360 already does 90% of these things" why should I shell out another 400 to 500$ for anew console ?
For Skype ? to record TV?

Yes core gamers will buy the PS4 and XboxNext but there will be little incentive for the rest of the consumer market to upgrade from their current consoles.

They have sold so many this gen because they keep breaking down.

Red ring of death (xbox) and yellow light of death (ps3) accounts for at least half of those sales via repurchases.

It's safe to assume PS3 owners will go with PS4, and it's probable some xbox owners that could switch to PS4 if the nextbox proves to be lackluster.

Not to mention possible disenfranchised Nintendo owners as well, who could switch IF the Wii-U doesn't provide the games. Let's not forget the Lifespan of the PS4 could be longer than PS3.

Everything's coming up Sony. The PS4 will surpass fifty million sales without breaking a sweat, to think that it'll only ever sell sixty million units is ridiculous.

I mean unless you have a crystal ball, with all the limited information about PS4 and a nonexistent announcement of the next Xbox, you'd never be able to tell which is to fall and which is to shine.
