have not been dedicated for many years now. To be competitive in the industry they had to evolve into more than just games.

PS2 is a good example of bridging a gap between the home entertainment market and the video game market. It transitioned to the ps3 with streaming media and music access and social interaction as well as internet access.

Game systems still play games but they (MS, Sony, Nintendo) are wanting them to do more than that now in light of all the smart devices we have in our lives. so what if your phone can surf the web or your TV can stream netflix. These game systems want to take part in those features as well.

They have to be able to do more to remain relevant in a world that is growing more and more dependent on conveniences.

Especially apparent in the past 2 years SONY and MICROSOFT are hoping to capitalize on the booming "Social" networking type approach. Which I'm afraid may just be another passing fad and could hurt them later on, though with the internet being more commonplace than ever that seems unlikely. I'm sure the Nextbox will do all the social abilities that the PS4 is doing, forgetting that consoles are about the games, not having watered down PC abilities.

I think a lot of you are taking what he said too literal. No console is a "dedicated game systems" anymore because they all do other things like Netflix, web browsers, etc...

However, you can clearly tell with Sony and Nintendo that gaming is first and foremost.

I think what he was saying is that with Microsoft it's the exact opposite. It's services first, and then gaming, and as a games console that shouldn't be the case.

But it was expected and it was even OUTLINED in MS 3 step plan to infiltrating the living room space.

1. Original Xbox was to make a name for them
2. Xbox 360 was to gain more market share
3. New Xbox was aimed to take over the living room.

So it's not surprising to me at all, but I guess people just didn't want to see what was in front of them. With gamers being the reason they've had any success with the Xbox means that the Nextbox will still have a focus on gaming, and I'm sure it'll be a solid console, but MS was never in it for gaming, they're here for profit. MS doesn't care about maxing their system or creating new IP's they care about having big selling franchises and multiplatforms, and most of their audience is fine with that, so it's really no loss to them.

I don't think the Nextbox will gain more market share than the Xbox 360 has, but I don't think it's going to be a significant drop even if gaming is a secondary focus. They'll still have the Halos, COD's, Forza's, and exclusive DLC to keep their system up to standards.

But I think more 3rd party developers are going to be willing to do more PS4 exclusives for the simple fact that Sony BUSINESS actually cares about making good games.

Do note that Sony's intentions were to become a multimedia device as well and in quite strong terms if Kutaragi's sentiments are anything to go by, hence the 'it only does everything' moniker.

So we shouldn't be naive to think that Sony has always had gamers' sentiments at heart. Ultimately, it is after the $ just like the other two. Now however, it is evident that Sony have realised that their core gaming fan base is critical to their success.

Yeah in the beginning the 360 was a games machine, for hardcore gamers, now Microsoft wants to expand and grow by trying to steal from Nintendo's pie, and if they dilute their resources they may become a decent company for hardcore gamers, and a decent company for casuals, where excellent experiences can be had in both markets by Sony and Nintendo respectfully. This has already been seen with the 360 as gamers have complained about. It's more than obvious this is Microsoft's strategy going forward to get the most money and market share.

Yes, when Sony used that moniker, the PS2 was a system that did pretty much everything available at the time. It was a huge selling point for them, because back then integrated devices that could do everything were non-existent.

Note the word "Play". As gamers, that should be the most important thing. The rest is so common now it's hardly worth focusing on because it's become expected. On top of that, integrated devices have become so ubiquitous the console is not the best place to get an all-in-one device anymore if you just don't care about games. Cheaper, and much better alternatives exist, hell half the TV's sold today even offer it built in. MS is behind the curve on this IMO, and they are approaching it in the wrong way. Focus on the games, and then build up the value through the services offered. They are doing it the opposite way, and as gamers, it should be concerning.

Having went through 2 pages worth of comments, I think it is pretty safe to say that N4G is pretty lopsided in terms of fans diversity. Y'all, look here, I am a diehard PS3 gamer and the only series I really like on Xbox 360 is the Gears of War, mainly due to my man, Cole Train! Well this is quite an alarming insight into the next-gen console. Whilst I know that Jonathan Blow has had his fair share of 'beef' with MS in the past (and present), I don't think his view should be scoffed at.

A gaming console that is 'not strictly about games' is not a gaming console at all in my opinion. It will be a tremendous detriment to the industry if MS relinquishes its ties with the core gamers that helped propel it into this industry's upper echelons only for it to infiltrate the living rooms for what they've always struggled to do.

I don't want a half-arsed gaming machine console that does other things. I want a gaming console that puts gaming at the heart of it's focus. Luckily, for us, Sony had a kick up the backside this generation and have their focus more or less squarely on the gamer. If worse comes to worse, we have the PlayStation 4- lets hope it doesn't rest on its laurels because it doesn't have as tight a competitor.

Only Kinect game I can find anywhere in the charts which barely cracks the top 20 is Kinect Sports (in the US, global far below) and then long nothing. It sure ain't 3rd party making money off of Kinect (and I actually know). It's a black whole for MS, too. All it does is trying to sell the console to "others". But what's the point, really? They sank $500M already and keep going. Not my money, I'm just saying...but really, nobody cares about Kinect.

@ Septic - aye, that's the main danger here - MS effectively replaced Ninty as the main competition in the core gaming arena (sorry Ninty fans, but when it comes to publishing third party games, last gen there were, for the most part, only two games in town in the console game), and MS were always in the game for loungeroom domination (and said as much early on, to their investors) rather than gaming.

Fortunately, they were competitive enough to stop Sony getting carried away. Risk is if they back off and focus on being a jack-of-all trades, then they'll stop putting the competitive pressure on gaming. If this does come to pass, then hopefully Steam and mobile/tablet, with Ninty in the background, will be enough to keep Sony from slacking off.

It's a huge risk for MS, as even with a year's headstart and a pretty clunky start from the PS3, Sony have come back to be the strongest gaming device through the life of the generation (weak start, strong finish - note, the 360 is still an _awesome_ piece of kit, but you just get a better range of games on Playstation, and often a deeper range of games as well). If they start weaker, they could lose market share, and pretty much fade out outside of the US (only in console gaming, of course).

I doubt they'll do this though - but this article from Blow about MS is far from the only 'negative' vibe from devs and publishers, and they seem to be lining up to get behind the PS4.

Anyways, it's all rumour and speculation - we'll see what's going to happen in a month or two either way. We just have to hope that the rumour of it being a gaming console second are wrong, or that MS change direction after listening to the fan response.

The problem is Microsoft is known first for Windows and rumor has it Windows 8 will tie it all together.

This is why sometimes you have to hand it to Nintendo, they are primarily a game company, that's all they do. Sony has various divisions so they will want to create new formats and delve into things like 3D to help sell TVs. Sony still does a great job at separating divisions and really focus on games.

I'm glad more and more developers are speaking out. No longer will Microsoft be able to coast off of the competitions mistakes. Xbox Live used to be their trump card but even that is starting to be questioned as others have improved their online services dramatically.

Do you know where is the gold mines or the primary market for indie games right now (from big to small indie developers?) hint, it is not console (too expansive, lack of exposure compare to mobile devices, etc, I think u get the point). tHough MS really support indie this Gen (as you can see the amount of indie games, from shovel wares to very high quality ones, on xlive, including their own dirt cheap XNA tools that indie developers can use. they also promote/ advertise/recommend and have dedicated space for indie games all over xlive as well. Compare to what shown on PSN, do u think potential buyer are more informed about Indies games than on xlive like having everything (demo, info, photo, releated dlc contents, sale advertisement) all in one spot? that is why u see more Indies games on xlive than psn no? U dont have to sign away your your IP either and restricted yourselves to a single market, which happen with Sony (journey) for example.

The original xbox was amazing. If many poeople actually had it, then they will see how bad ms lost its way. The system had amazing games. I found myself playing the Xbox more in the later stages of last gen. That was why I adopted the xbox 360 first. I have a very big issue with the 360.

Microsoft are, currently, contributing nothing to the gaming sphere. Their console is held together by multiplatform games and the same two or three franchises. It works for them, whatever.

However, a bigger issue is that Microsoft have switched, almost entirely, to focus on the applications. How many applications the 360 has. How many subscribers they have. So on and so forth.

Again, it's working for them.

They started this gen with a real focus on core gamers and delivered as many titles as they could get their hands on... now, they seem more content to get content providers either because it makes more money or because it makes for a nicer bullet point.

I just find it hard to justify the Xbox brand even existing if it's just a media centre that happens to play some games that are on other platforms.

Adding to the problem, is the fact IT'S WORKING FOR THEM. They abandoned core gamers in order to provide a very casual, family friendly experience powered by Kinect and apps. No reason why this successful approach wouldn't work next gen. In fact, I'd say they want that same audience to come over to their new device because they're easier to cater for than the core gamer who demands more.

We then have the issue where the PS4 is already media heavy and if Blow is saying he's going to PS4, which is already not entirely a gaming console, what must the new XBox really be like.

What was the rumour? 3GB for the OS? Yeah.

I think the issue I also take is just how many Xbox fans don't seem to care. It doesn't matter what I think, I won't touch another Xbox, once bitten, twice shy, but I really think fans of the brand, the ones who like Halo and Gears and supported Alan Wake and Lost Odyssey, should be up in arms and, frankly, no one ever complains.

But I use my ps3 probably 95% for games, and use its other applications fairly little.

And in that notion, just as I have a massive focus on games, I want my next console to have a massive focus on games. The other apps are nice extras. They've always wanted to be the center of the living room, and they have never tried to hide it. The thing is, none of these consoles are "strictly about games" anymore, and haven't been for a while now. You can argue the point that one company openly caters to the core gamer audience more at this point than the other, but both are still offering a lot of the same services in addition to their gaming capabilities.

It may turn out that the next xbox will be more so branded as an entertainment system more so than a game console, but that doesn't mean it will be any less of a game console than the 360 was. A lot left to still be uncovered about this new console, so we have to wait and see what we are in store for when Microsoft actually reveals the thing.

Awesome comment...from the get go, with the original Xbox they pushed for the "other" things with the console. Like ripping music to the hardrive, bringing online gaming to consoles and achievements. People tend forget Microsoft ushered these little things into console gaming.

The 360 just built on this aspect with the best online infrastructure out of the big three. Even if you disagree on paying for it, they were at the forefront for most of these things.

Sony announces they're making the PS4 a social platform...it's literally built around being everything social and people praise it. But Xbox is just continuing what they've been doing from the get go and N4G act- basically ignorant with whats going on in gaming.

Well, Microsoft game studios haven't been throwing out a bunch of homemade exclusive games, sure. They have offered core games for the console, exclusive and not exclusive. So its not like there hasn't been anything to play if you have a 360. If you're looking for more exclusive core games, yeah then 360 at this point isn't the place to be. Really though, outside of us, the general public doesn't care how exclusive a game is. They get what they want and don't care who it is made by.

I think that when we see what Microsoft's strategy is with the next console (in regards to core games), then we will get a better idea of how they really feel about us. If they decide to sit back and let everyone else make the games for them, then yeah they probably don't care about the core audience more than they do being a centerpiece box for the living room. Or, maybe they decided move core game development over to the new console a few years ago instead of putting new IP on an aging console...while still trying to be a centerpiece box for the living room. We should know something soon enough. Whatever they decide, it could have a huge effect on their stance in the future gaming market positively or negatively.

I seriously hope your right. Despite my rather vocal criticisms of MS lately on their current direction, I really do want them to bring something worthwhile to gaming.

The media services themselves don't bother me at all, and all in all, I find it good that they would want to offer value in the machine in such a way. I've liked all the services that Sony introduced throughout the years on the PS3, and find it highly convenient to have it all in one place. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and there never will be.

The system itself, does not have to be strictly about games, and strong arguments can be made how it could doom the machine from the start if it were, many of which I would agree with.

The concern that I put out though is that the past couple years, and the last year especially, there has been a huge shift in focus in what kind of game machine that the 360 has become. I won't deny that there are core games that have come out, but nothing new that pushes the gaming spectrum. New IP's are rare from MS, and big 1st party titles are not being turned out with the same frequency that their competition is doing. The 3rd party support is there for sure, but that does nothing to distinguish the Xbox brand in the marketplace.

I just want to see the MS that existed at the beginning of this gen. They were explosive with title announcements and big 1st party IP's. They talked about, and offered, a lot of the other stuff as well, and it was great. If they had never had their hardware problems(and my own personal issues with their pre-Xbox days hardware), I would have brought one without hesitation. If they could get back to that then I would be singing praises for them. But given the current trend in their marketing, I can only remain weary for whatever they plan to do next gen.

Funny how Halo & Gears keep coming up like it's a bad thing when they sell very well but, I'll just look the other way when Sony shows another Killzone, Uncharted, Resistance, Infamous, etc.

I'm pretty sure most of the bias criticism are from people not driving 360 sales. To think that Sony or Nintendo don't want to be an online entertainment hub is just naive.

I will agree and I felt that way too at times that they were focusing on Kinect to the detriment of new games for the console. I'm hoping that will change with the Next720(And I'm sure it will) now that Kinect has the proper support.

But I can't see myself abandoning my fav Multiplayer games, Halo+Gears.....

Ms can definitely steal PS4 thunder by releasing that controller I heard about but them, the one with the lcd screen in the middle.

And of course new exclusives and bring back some trusted great ones..... Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Banjo, and a new Conker. Oh and give me Halo 2 Hd.

Don't mind paying $40 a years for Live, but psplus for my Vita is pretty incredible. Ms should take notes.

The more features = The higher revenue stream potential. We all are sacrificing something to enjoy gaming nowadays, rather it be becoming inundated with ad's both in-game and on the various networks, or being charged for things we don't even use. It's just what we have to put up with now, do the games suffer because of it? I don't think so, but do the consumers suffer because of it? Absolutely, if we don't like it then don't buy it. No one is forcing us to buy the new consoles. It's a hobby we choose for better or for worse.

Lot's of rumours at the moment,but there does seem to be worrying signs.Anyone been following the Sim city fiasco? For me,it's not the number of services the new consoles offer,it's the way they will be offered.At the moment, if I buy a smart TV I'll get most of the services I could possibly want, and the same goes for smart phones and tablets. Why would I choose to have a console? Personally, it's because of the gaming attributes consoles offer that currently, can't be offered to the same standard on any other device(PC's accepted).However, if I have to jump through hoops to get the games - always on internet, extra subscriptions, forced DRM. In fact, anything that removes choice, then I'll pass. MS, and Sony for that matter are walking a very thin line IMO.Sure, we don't know the facts as yet,but the Sim city example doesn't bode well.

PS4 = Day one, midnight launch purchase for me.
Xbox720 = Who knows, maybe when is cheap.

I will not be paying for having access to the internet 3 times, with Live & PSN subscriptions. Live proved to ALL these companies, that millions of gamers, are dumb enough to think paying somehow equals a better service, then PSN+ came along & blew MS's theory out the window, by actually giving us FULL blown PS3 disk based games, PSP, PSVita & PSOne & 2 classics, playable on PS3, PSP & in most cases PSP (& if not, soon, as they seem to be patching PSVita play into most of these).

MS seem more & more likely to be looking to maximize profits, by sucking people into this whole $99 console, just sign dotted line, stating you will pay for Live for 2yrs. That sh!t is sinister, & takes something away from how I believe consoles should be.
I've got the old school mentality of pay for what you get...Pay a 1 time fee, to get full ownership of my machine, from day one.

It really makes no sense whatsoever, to offer subscription services for buying consoles, as it means that you could pay $1,500-$2,000, for your console, that would have cost you $500-$600 max. to buy outright. (Probably more around $400-$450 mark).

Anyhow, PS4 is looking more & more like the only console that I will require to sit next to my Wii-U , come end of year.

i guess we are getting the ps4 then guys. glad this gen everyone will be on the same page as far as what console to get so that this gen will brake the record for largest number of players playing games online. imagine cod with 18 million people online on the ps4 system. we gotta think smart guys one console to rule them all we all will be happy if you follow through with the plan man. i dont see why people wont think this way and decide on the ps4.
