Which Next Generation Console Should You Buy?

Gadget Mill: We are slowly but surely approaching a new wave of next generation consoles. Sony have already pushed the boat out by announcing the PS4 in their PlayStation Event press conference. Microsoft as of now are still playing their cards close to their chest and Nintendo have already gone ahead and released the Wii-U. The Wii-U in my opinion doesn’t count as next generation – so I’ll class them as a ‘new generation console’ they pride themselves under.

Some people have already gone ahead and made their mind up about which console they will buy – this is evident by their attitude towards their favourite console including comments they make mentioning things like ‘first day buy’ on every positive article related to their favourite console. I was also like this previous generation but have decided to keep an open mind this generation! Although I do plan to buy all the next generation consoles as I did this generation.

I love this industry more than anyone I know, and I won't be buying an Xbox unless it's the Xbox 180 (meaning that Microsoft has done a complete turnaround in the direction they're taking the platform).

BUT, there's no way of knowing what the nextBox will be. So I can't decide if ill buy one or not. I CAN say that I'll be a day-one PS4 owner, though.

Already have a Wii U, I think a lot depends on price when it comes to the others. If both are $399 or less, I'll buy both, if not I'll probably buy the next Xbox simply because my favorite franchises are on that.

In all honesty though, it's way too eary to predict because we haven't heard anything from Microsoft on the next Xbox and we haven't seen the actual PS4 or had confirmed finalized specs.

Regardless of whatever the author of the title "feels", the Wii U is, by definition, a next-gen console. As seeing how it's already out, it's now just a matter of time until the PS4 and Xbox 3 come out to say we've fully entered the new "current" generation.

So, I already made my decision and purchased a next-gen console this past november. And I will probably end up buying a PS4 sometime in the future. Maybe not at launch, but I think the possibilities of me passing over the next Infamous game, as well as whatever Naughty Dog makes, as well as new God of War or Motorstorm or Little Big Planet games, or new IPs... yeah, not very likely I'll pass out on all that. :P

The next Xbox has little chance with me, unless Microsoft amazes me with a slew of superb exclusive games. Halo and Gears of War, while I understand their appeal, just aren't my thing.

No one knows what MS has planned for their next gen console. Though, and I've been saying this for a while, if they don't change their online model, they are probably dead in the water this generation.
They have pissed away most of their customer good will these last few years, with Sony showing how to offer a paid online model that caters to the gamers, not to their own pockets.

That said, anybody claiming one indefinitely, without even seeing what MS is doing, well, that's just a really informed decision not based on personal bias at all. Facts and informed decisions though. He needs those?

And, if so, I don't think they will find the market that they did this generation. People were fine, to a point, with paying for Live. I was one of them.
Once Playstation started offering what they do in terms of a paid service, people started to get annoyed. I was one of those people.
In reality, Live really isn't that much of an expense, so people don't really have a problem going along with it. It's not that they are stupid, it's that it is a requirement when going with 360. By comparison, however, it's not worth the price and having Playstation, out of the gate, offering what they do now, it will hurt Microsoft.
Don't understand the disagrees. Only thing I can guess at is at the biased statement. Still hold to that one. It's stupid to make a choice when the one console isn't even on store shelves and, for the other, nothing has been officially confirmed, only speculated, and there is nothing really to go on. But hey, people do as people do. That and attacking Xbox's online model, anyway.

I too was one of those that paid for live, starting back with the original xbox. Hell I didn't even pick up a sony product until GoW came out and even then I still did most of my gaming with MS.

It wasn't until KZ that I started to play the ps more. It was then that I discovered free online MP as I've spent most of my gaming life enjoying SP and splitscreen. I was livid to say the least. It was then that I became a more informed gamer but more importantly an inform consumer.

It wasn't until I saw gears that I picked up the 360 and all they have done is advance the damn MP so you keep paying for live, if you call new gamemodes/skins/weapons advancements.

Guess that's why it irks me so much that I can't seem to enlighten others as it was once done for me. It isn't about the money as I'm sure we ALL can come up with $50 for our hobby, it's the principal behind the scam.

Had I known then that supporting such a scam would lead to big pubs and others to copy such an anti-consumer business model I'd have tried to do what I'm doing now, but it seems futile.

THe Wii U is a great system that adds its own extra features into games, such as Miiverse and remote play, which trust me are both great. Besides that it had one of the best console launches in history and has plenty of good titles on the horizon. Free online services and the eshop works great. Its worth owning for the exclusives its getting alone. Besides the things announced the things that havent been announced (like retros games, fatal frame, Metroid) are just as good. Nintendo will have plenty of great games from its own developers plus its getting two of the biggest games of the year with AC4 and Watch Dogs

This is not hate towards Xbox but honestly I may skip the NextBox this round. I own both consoles so I cant say that Im a fanboy of one or the other.

I find myself on my PS3 way more because there are just so many more single player games to be had and I really like PSN+ since I got it free for one year and it gives me lots of benefits.

The only reason I am keeping my 360 at the moment is for the New Gears of war and that's pretty much it. The 360 games listing for myself is really lame. I don't honestly care for Kinect at all and I don't care to pay to play online per year.

Unless the Xbox changes things up this year and gets some first party devs and NEW IPS I wont be getting the next Xbox. Especially if everything is geared towards the Kinect 2.0 then I really wont be getting it.

I already have a Wii U and personally I consider it next gen but I'm not here to argue semantics. It's the new Nintendo console, interpret that however you want.

As for the remaining consoles. I ignored the PS3 mainly because of Sony's business practices and litigiousness a few years ago but now I'm done "punishing" them (I'm sure they noticed!) I'll possibly get a PS4. It's unlikely I'll go the 720 route simply because I don't want to be forced into subscription services and I don't want a gimped console because I wont pay a subscription.

I'll possibly even look into the Steambox but I doubt it will be as powerful as a PS4/720/PC judging by the size of the thing, but if it can run the latest and greatest games and the price is sensible who knows? Finally, thanks to all you PC zealots on this site I keep looking at my (slightly shoddy) PC and thinking I should build a monster and stick with that.

One thing I wont be doing though is purchasing any of the above on release day. These are large, complex systems and I'd rather you guys shake out the bugs and I'll buy a "fixed" one a few months down the line ;)

- Regardless of how the author feels about the Wii U ~ by definition it's an eighth-generation home console, that's competing with the PS4 and 720.

For all who are claiming that the Wii U is 7th-gen, by terms of power - Let's look at a few things:

~ Power doesn't make a new console "next-gen" or not. That has never been the case. If a console is released in a different time period than it's predecessor, or if it's a newcomer altogether and is being released alongside other consoles - it's "next-gen".

By that logic:

- PS1 was 4th-generation
- PS2 was 5th-generation
- DS was 6th-generation
- Wii was 6-th generation
- 3DS is 7-th generation

POWER doesn't determine a console's generation. TIME does. That always HAS, and always WILL be the case - so remember. Another interesting thing about each of those consoles/hand-helds, is that they all beat-out their competition, despite being at a lower standard in the power category. So history has even shown that the console with the most power, doesn't necessarily win. That can always change, but that's how it's been for the past 3 generations.

Wii U may not fly high as the PS4/720 - but it isn't an enhanced 360/PS3. The console has already shown a very good improvement over the 360/PS3's tech - at the fact that it's already running 2 games based off their PC versions (Need for Speed: Most Wanted U and Trine 2). That's only THREE months into it's lifetime, so imagine 2 years from now.

People are comparing Wii U games to PS3/360 games, and claiming it's the best the U can do. Well, remember how 360/PS3 games looked when they began? Not much better than the 6th generation. There was a difference, but not a huge jump. NOW look at them. See how much it's changed?

We're approaching the end of the graphics road, either way. By the end of their lifetimes, the difference between Wii U, PS4 and the 720 will be noticeable - but if you're expecting the Wii compared to the PS3/360, you're sadly mistaken.

Anyways I say WiiU/Ps4 is the way to go for next gen because you get the best of both worlds. some ppl don't have a choice because of the financial corner they are in but if things were great we wouldn't have this epic console war going on.

I don't fall into any genre as I have always been dedicated to the developers that make the specific games i like. I have Friends & Family that span more than one console so I have no choice but to game were the games are being played.

It's going to be rough as MH3U is coming and so is StarCraft2 (zergs).

you know it's bad when you have a back log of games to play...

If Microsoft invest to much into the kinect and kill off more core gaming i think i might not buy to many games on that system.

PS4 as my main console, PC and Wii U are secondary consoles. Exclusives only. If the NextBox has enough exclusives I'm interested in, that will be a secondary as well.

I'm not a fan of digital or the massive DRM on PC so that won't ever be my main console unless games like Far Cry 3 come around where they're locked 20fps on consoles with screen tearing all over the place. I'm buying Far Cry 3 on PC once it gets $20 or less, but most games on PC will be digital only on all consoles or exclusives.
