Wii U January Sales in U.S. May be Higher Than NPD Figures, Thanks To Resellers

NPD refused to comment on this, as it's not something that retailers would be keen to advertise, but another source of Gamasutra's has suggested that various retailers have found that for every 100 Wii U systems sold in January, between 40-50 have then been returned, in many cases possibly by failed resellers.

So, someone's trying to use the used games market to say, "Hey! we aren't doing THAT bad!"

don't know whether to laugh or facepalm.

PopRocks3594066d ago

That's not what they said at all. Here's a bit straight from the article.

"The figure reported by the NPD Group, the sources' story went on, included perhaps 100,000 units sold to consumers — and 40,000 or more units returned to stores. The net, then, would yield the 57,000 units reported by the NPD Group."

They didn't exclude used game sales, they excluded units that were sold and sent back, possibly from people who were hoping to resell the Wii U at a higher price than normal to earn a profit.

mandf4066d ago

Not much difference. It still shows the demand for the WiiU is low.

BitbyDeath4065d ago

"possibly from people who were hoping to resell the Wii U at a higher price than normal to earn a profit."

The Wii U is easily available though, more likely it is Xmas returns cause they just don't want it.

That happens with a lot of Xmas gifts.

SilentNegotiator4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

I highly doubt that they factored returned products and it's certainly not a positive thing to have had 40% of them returned.

Another horrible, backwards logic article from a Nintendo fansite downplaying Wii U's diving decline.

darthv724065d ago

but the wii-u isnt an xmas sweater that doesnt fit. Its a game system. who in their right mind would want to return a game system?

As for 3rd party sales, that is how i got my wii-u basic. I bought it brand new off someone for $230. He was asking $250 at the time but I know this guy and he wanted over $300 back around xmas.

When he knew he wasnt going to resell it for more...he couldnt return it to the store as it was passed the return time frame so he had to sell it at a loss.

But it was a win for me.

Godmars290.

So, someone's trying to use the used games market to say, "Hey! we aren't doing THAT bad!"

- READING COMPREHENSION - This is something your lacking.

Theyellowflash304065d ago

Never said you didn't know how to spell.... lol

Godmars2904065d ago

You still messed up when trying to accuse someone else of not understanding something.

Just like I said people are reselling their consoles to others, people who were looking for a quick price-gouging buck from those despite for a WiiU with no takers, and this article superimposing those possible numbers on "official" public results.

Theyellowflash304065d ago

I just used the incorrect 'your' because i'm typing on my phone. I don't have time to proof read my messages on N4g. Nor do I call out people who use incorrect grammar to try to make my point. Just as long as what they said was understandable, I'm not going to go all English Internet teacher on them.

deafdani4064d ago

Whoah, calm down. I was just correcting a spelling error, and did so in what I thought was a kind way (hence the ^_^).

Nothing more, nothing less. Jesus.

It really doesn't change the fact that there are not many Wii U systems in homes.

disturbing_flame4065d ago

And can we do that with other consoles to explain that they sell more or is it just for the Wii U in particular ?

josephayal4065d ago

Next year the Wii-U will be dominating

SolidDuck4065d ago

With a new playstation and most likely a new Xbox. The wii u will be doing anything but dominating next year. Unless they really come out swinging with first party support they might be in even worse shape. But the 3ds is so strong Nintendo will be fine. I expect the wii u to be more like the GameCube, a good system with some great games but not strong sales wise. I expect playstation to bounce back strong this gen.

Root4065d ago

If only Del Boy was real....he'd manage to sell more Wii U's :D

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga1d 19h ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

Profchaos1d 20h ago

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas1d 18h ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj1d 18h ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger1d 13h ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
