The Violence Issue in Tomb Raider & Uncharted

In Uncharted we are presented with Nathan Drake, a contemporary, happy go lucky adventurer cut from the same cloth as Indiana Jones. He’s a man that rubs shoulders with a lot of morally questionable characters, including, at times, his own surrogate father, Sully. Despite the gray area he inhabits on the ethical spectrum, he’s a man that cares, a man that is capable of love, kindness and doing the right thing. That’s the story we get anyway, and that’s the story that reliably plays out in cut scenes as Drake struggles to protect his friends, his romantic interest, and even just the sanctity of a cursed tomb or some other archaeological site.

Violence is very grounded in reality, life is not all flowers and giggles. With that said, some games are just borderline sadistic.

FriedGoat4058d ago (Edited 4058d ago )

USA was born on violence, and continues it today, everyday. Who cares what's in a game? there is violence in life, movies, games and books. What we eat is murdered and our whole world is based on it. Jesus, I wish this would stop coming up. If you didn't have the shooting inbetween, there wouldn't be much to do in the game.

Conzul4058d ago

idk why you got so many disagrees. People who find violence in media abrasive obviously didn't get spanked enough when they were little.

These games seem kinda reasonable on violence FOR games.

Problem is we find the criticisers of video games are unwilling to try and understand the difference on what isn't and is too violent in games and draw up the comparison with movies, thinking it shows that they have complete knowledge on what they're talking about.

Obviously this isn't one of those articles but these games aren't exactly the go to games for pure violence or to prove games are too violent.

Oh god people die in video games in a graphic manner.

Man... You know, I just read a story about a guy who got his head lopped off in a car accident that killed 6 others. Who would have thought people die like that. I mean I'd have thought they'd just, respawn.

SanMarco4058d ago

They should go out with each other and go on an adventure. I'd imagine a very argumentative, selfish, competitive relationship.

AlienFodder4058d ago

It would be absolutely perfect... :)

Darth Gamer4058d ago

Now that would be a perfect game IMO. Even if one of them just made a cameo in the others game would just be perfect. I can just imagine the bantering back and forth between the two.

Both are strolling through some jungle tomb looking for the same artifact when they happen upon each other.

Nathan: Hey, Who the Hell are you, and on second thought, why haven't I ever met you before.

Lara( in her British voice) : I'm Lara, Lara Croft.

Nathan: You mean Lara Croft, the billionair famed explorer and relic hunter. Oh, wanna meet me down at the local tavern in say one hour for a drink? I just have one small thing I have to do first.

Lara: Don't you think you should tell me your name first. I don't even know you.

Nathan: Oh yeah, I'm Nathan Drake. Treasure hunting extraordinaire.

Lara: Never heard of ya Mr. Drake. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a relic to get. I think I'll skip the drink, but you go on ahead.

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9551d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro51d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot51d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist50d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx51d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188151d ago (Edited 51d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9551d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist51d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp51d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg51d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion51d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
