Electronic Arts Announces Micro-Transactions For All Future Games, Cliff Bleszinski Defends Decision

In a recent announcement in the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom Conference, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen has stated plans for all future titles to include micro-transaction markets and options. Jorgensen claims that “consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of the business” and wholeheartedly supporting the idea of micro-transactions within video games. He specified that “we’re building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way, either to get to a higher level, to buy a new character, to buy a truck, a gun; whatever it may be.” all of which strongly suggests a pay-to-win mentality on the part of EA in their decision to include these within the title.

Why is this guy popping up every day now...?

animegamingnerd4061d ago

because journalist got bored of writing wii u is doom articles and decided to recycle news

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4060d ago (Edited 4060d ago )

Marco transaction will be introduced next year. Then mega transaction the year after. Then tera transactions.

Roper3164061d ago

so everyone should wait until the games are 10 bucks and then use the other 50 they saved by waiting to buy the rest of the game.

DumpManager4060d ago

I am pretty sure EA will bankrupt itself next.. they are pricing themselves into the graveyard

MysticStrummer4061d ago

Microtransactions are fine in theory. It all depends on how they're used.

BLAKHOODe4060d ago

And microtransactions have been around for ages.. not just in video games!

Ever had to pay extra at a fast food joint to add cheese or bacon to your sandwich? That's a microtransaction. Goto a theater and want extra butter on your popcorn? That's a microtransaction. Went to the car wash and want a 2nd coat of wax? Microtransaction! Went to a petting zoo and need 'feed' to feed the animals? That's another microtransaction. Want to send a message to somebody not on your Facebook friend's list? That costs $1 now.. microtransaction!

Microtransactions are nice extras, but completely unnecessary. It just depends on the person's desire.

stuna14060d ago

I'm just waiting till microtransactions hit the real world! Microtransaction for each sip of water, every breath you take, every square of toilet paper you use, good days are ahead! Can't wait/s

MONOLITHICIDE4060d ago

@stuna1
They already do.
Taxes baby!

brish4060d ago

"Ever had to pay extra at a fast food joint to add cheese or bacon to your sandwich? That's a microtransaction."

So EA is behind that as well! EA is far more evil than I ever imagined! ;-)

ziggurcat4061d ago

as long as the items that are associated with these transactions can be obtained through natural progression, i don't give a damn what they do.

LAWSON724061d ago

You should if it can effect the balance of the multiplayer.

Snookies124060d ago

No no, I'm sure HE cares what he thinks, just that nobody else does...

FAT MAN GO BOOM4060d ago

Well he supports it because how else is ea to pay for his exotic cars...

that said... I will not be surprise if ea publishes games once he opens a new studio he has to wait his year before he can go work for someone else...

That f*ck EA I will not by any game with micro transaction or pay to win...

I will become a retro gamer before I let them take more money this is just greed plan and simple... they make more money than people could imagine... billions of worth... screw it...

I would rather drop gaming than to contribute to their Greed any more..

MONOLITHICIDE4060d ago

Completely agree. These might be the last few years of gaming for me. I don't like the outlook of video games for the future. Ps3 and older is what its going to be I suppose.

Im sure he would love it. More money for him.

OtterX38d ago

Yea, I remember seeing him and his Lamborghini at one point in history. Lol, I think that kind of gives it away.

rippermcrip38d ago

Doubtful he gets any residuals from anything Gears related.

rippermcrip37d ago

Bunch of clowns down voting without any explanation of how exactly he is getting money off Gears. You think Notch still gets Minecraft money too?

jznrpg37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Depends on the contract. Some contracts have residuals some don’t

Whitey2k38d ago

Sometimes I don't get what he says half the times. He could of put gears on the playstation from the start but he's fanboyness for xbox got in the way

Notellin38d ago

I imagine this is exactly how fanboys feel how this went down. Microsoft paid for all the development and took all the risk off Epic games for a new IP.

It has nothing to do with anyone being a fanboy. Well other than yourself who oversimplified this entire franchises history.

LoveSpuds38d ago

I agree Notellin, however, once he was in bed with MS he did become pretty 'anti Sony' ans was such a shill for MS.

Hofstaderman38d ago

This. And Sony also does this with titles these days.

shinoff218337d ago

I thought it was said cliffs shopped it around hence rumors of a ps3 demo being out there. If ms took on all the cost, why is there a ps3 demo?

Rude-ro37d ago

Not true at all.
Microsoft had to buy the ip because the contract ran out on keeping it exclusive.
Microsoft took no risk, they just marketed the game and payed for a contract.
Not hard to find out.

Your the the fanboy

Sciurus_vulgaris38d ago

No, Epic signed a development and publishing contract with Xbox for Gears of War. After Judgement Microsoft still had the Gears of War publishing rights. Epic then sold the Gears of War IP to Microsoft in 2014. Cliffy B never owned Gears of War, he was just a lead designer of the series.

rippermcrip37d ago

Ya I don't know what people are saying about CliffyB making money of Gears sales nowadays. He was never the owner and Epic no longer owns it either.

ChasterMies38d ago

“He could of put gears on the playstation from the start but he's fanboyness for xbox got in the way”

It has nothing to do with fondness for the Xbox platform. Microsoft paid for exclusivity.

Travesty38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Well when you look at the sales perspective of ps5. It has a big audience selling over a 2 to 1 ratio. It makes money sense.
Fanboy era was at its prime during the ps3-360 generation. It’s not as toxic as it once was, thankfully. People grow out of it eventually. I have my preference just as the next person. That being said it’s coming to be more about expanding availability instead of standing behind a brand. Much more Microsoft than Sony. But Sony will probably move up its time of PC release for increase revenue.
We will see, it’s just speculation.

Psychonaut8538d ago

CliffyB is like David Jaffe at this point, always quick with the opinions but haven’t made a successful game in over a decade at this point. Do any of us really care what they think about anything? I certainly don’t.

shinoff218337d ago

I never liked the guy tbh but he's got more relevance in gaming then we do.

Skuletor37d ago

CliffyB, I haven't heard that name since Lawbreakers flopped.

EA Hopes to Use Generative AI to Drive Monetization and Make Development 30% More Efficient

Today Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson provided a look into his ideas for the use of generative AI in the company's development processes.

I wonder what the next buzz word they'll slap in front of AI to make it sound exciting next? "Generative" as if it's creating its own content. Lol.

Cacabunga39d ago

EA is already dying a painful death..

peppeaccardo39d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken40d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN39d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199239d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

Knightofelemia40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies40d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde39d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai40d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken40d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay39d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"
