PS4 will not support CDs

As technology advances, the storage mediums of today die and new ones are born. The upcoming PlayStation 4 will cease support of a format that Sony's home consoles always have: compact discs.

cl19834065d ago

Would really suck if dvd's also get axed.

Razmossis4065d ago

I don't believe you, Kotaku

TheGamerDood4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

Who the hell still watches DVD or plays CD discs for that matter. Just transfer all your pirated material on to a fast little 8GB thumb-drive if you don't have one already. /problem

thorstein4065d ago

DVDs are supported, it is already confirmed. CDs..... meh. I don't really use my PS3 as a CD player now do I. And it would be much, much faster to just use the USB 3.0 to transfer the data/ music/ whatever.

SilentNegotiator4065d ago

This rumor is based off of a Tweet from a journalist.

Let's not get too hasty here.

gaffyh4065d ago

It supports DVD and the laser is the same so CDs will most likely be supported.

stu8884065d ago

It is stupid - completely.

I want to put my music on the PS4. All my favourite music is on CDs - Its a bit like games, I like to have a physical copy on my shelf.

I like to have custom soundtracks like on GT and FIFA so I will be disappointed.

Its supposed to be a multi media centre too?

Hope this is wrong

user39158004065d ago

Good job Sony great way to kill the CD, now do us a favor and kill blu ray, no wait dvd/s, no wait,,,

Everything has an end cds are like floppys this days, protable sticks are cheap with more storage.

Army_of_Darkness4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

As for me, I can't even remember the last time I inserted a CD into my PS3?! All I use now is a memory stick to transfer all my music and videos. Fast, simple and easy. Like seriously now, who doesn't do that?!

Omni-Tool4065d ago

From my understanding, CDs will be phased out of the market by 2015 anyways. That's right, no more Compact Disc to buy. Now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing a music cd section at wal-mart these last few months.

pixelsword4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

A CD is a compact disc, and a DVD is a Digital Video Disc; A Blu-Ray disc is technically both of those things depending on the data stored, for the ones who wish to sound innocuous of the meaning of the vernacular.

:)

P.S.

This might be a stupid article, since Sony now owns the BD market it would appear advantageous to only use BD, at the behest of previous PS owners; but if they do support older formats, will everyone here buy it and not complain if it makes the PS4 a higher price?

Panthers4065d ago

I would be upset about DVDs, but CDs? I dont know anyone that either uses CDs, or would use a Playstation as a CD player. If you have CDs, just put them all on your computer and transfer

BISHOP-BRASIL4065d ago

I have tons of CDs and I still enjoy getting my music in physical media, but quite frankly I never used one in PS3 (or even PC for the last 10 yers or so), only on my home theater and car (yes, my car audio have a USB port, but there's something about checking the case, choosing a disc and putting it on slot that never gets old) so I don't really care if PS4 supports CD, but I hope they are not being phased out.

The_Devil_Hunter4065d ago

So wait, PS4 wont support VHS or Audio Tapes?!!!! NOOO!!

RememberThe3574065d ago

Everybody scroll back up and read what gaffyh said.

If the PS4 plays DVD's it'll play CDs. DVD lasers refocus for CDs so that's why can be used with both formats.

If the PS4 doesn't use CDs, that means Sony is using the oldest and cheapest DVD lasers known. I don't think they even make those anymore.

Oner4065d ago

Sony makes money off CD sales be it via making them and/or by it's artist (and so on...) ~

THUS THE PS4 WILL SUPPORT CD'S

I can't see how this would be in ANY way, shape, or form a possibility for them to not include it.

BattleAxe4065d ago

Damn, I was pissed when I learned that the PS3 wasn't supporting VHS.

Psn8004065d ago

Who uses DVD and CD anymore ?

steve30x4065d ago

@ TheGamerDood : I watch DVD's all the time.

gedapeleda4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

I know ps3 won't read vinyls

shadow27974065d ago

When was the last time a game was stored on a VHS? Exactly. The entire PS1 library is burned on CDs. In fact, there are a number of PS2 games on CDs. The rest are on DVD. Old technology or not (despite CD audio quality being much better than digital), it's still a commonly used media on a Playstation.

The PS4 will support CDs. Now stop giving Kotaku the attention it craves.

Who need CD if you got BD and USB

Conzul4065d ago

Yeah but if BD supports CDs then I don't understand why BDXL is so different that it can't handle them.

Don't make fun of CD use. CDs have been around so long that many have had time to build vast libraries of their favorite content. Sure, they need to join us eventually, but I don't get why the tech is being dropped.

Blank4065d ago

Options are always welcome and just because you find them useless dont mean other all the people in this world do too im personally not bothered or even believe this

This really should be a rumor until confirmed.
This is all being based on a "tweet" that "Sony" told some Japanese guy.

greenpowerz4065d ago

Doesn't stop you guys from spreading crap about specs and banning used games etc etc LMAO.

ThatXboxGuy4065d ago

A random tweet vs Developer insight
Why are you always so shameful POG? lol

Count4065d ago

I'm sorry? A random tweet that 'SONY' posted doesn't sound like just a ''random tweet'' to me.

Stop spinning it.

This actually seems more credible than a rumor from some eidos guy. I mean, who's eidos anyway?

moegooner884065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

@Count, Eidos is the publisher behind the Tomb Raider series, Deus Ex series, Batman Arkham Asylum and many others :
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w...
Also, it wasn't some guy, it was the president, who stated such matter in an interview, how exactly is this not credible.

kenshiro1004065d ago

Count: If you don't know who Eidos is, you might as well quit gaming.

Green: Always the sharp one aren't you? /s

Count4065d ago

I know who eidos is. You're missing the point. The point was Sony is a more credible source than eidos is.

I don't use my PS3 for playing CD's, but it would suck if the PS4 lacked the feature. I think CD's still play a part in creating the ultimate multi media gaming console.

T24065d ago

Sorry but I laughed at ur comment " I dont use it but it would really suck if they dont have it " ... Really would it suck?

I_LOVE_MYSELF4065d ago

Just because I won't use the feature doesn't mean there are not other people out there who would benifit from it. So yes, it would suck.

MetalProxy4065d ago

I was pissed when my wiiu wouldnt recognize my cds but thats ok..right? Stores have less and less CDs to buy I have noticed. Seams like they want music to mostly digital now days.

WitWolfy4065d ago

Just jailbreak the thing! I bet it will play CDs then :P

nukeitall4065d ago

Bummer....

I don't get why they would axe support for it though?

I still have a large collection of music CDs.

Ceasing support for Super Audio CD is kind of surprising too, considering it is a pretty recent format.

OpenGL4065d ago

Sony removed SACD support on the PS3 with one of the hardware revisions. If I'm not mistaken only the launch PS3s supported it.

Still kind of weird that CDs won't be supported considering the PS4 should play Blu-rays and literally every Blu-ray player in existence plays CDs and DVDs.

MikeMyers4065d ago

CD's use a red laser while bluray of course uses blue. This is probably another cost saving measure if true.

wishingW3L4065d ago

@MikeMyers it still has DVD and they both use the same laser.

4065d ago
MikeMyers4065d ago

I know earlier models of the PS3 had a dual lens so perhaps I was mistaken about needing 2 lenses to play DVD and Bluray. Not sure why they wouldn't support CD then. Maybe they feel its no longer needed?

N0S3LFESTEEM4065d ago

Guess you'll have to put that CD in your DVD player... or your BD player... or your computer... or your stereo system... or your car.

MRMagoo1234065d ago

or put it onto a usb stick and play it on the ps4 when it comes out

Root4065d ago

Not really

I mean who really buys CDs today....come on we all download online unless it's a CD by our favourite and I mean favourite artist/band. I think I have one CD and thats Tenacious D's Pick of Destiny Collectors Edition

Hicken4065d ago

Just bought one yesterday. I LIKE CDs. I like having physical EVERYTHING. If I could have a physical copy of every piece of digital whatever I have, I'd have a closet full of porn pictures and DVDs. But I prefer that to having my hard drive crash and losing it all(hard to back up a TB of porn, you know?).

Love that the one CD you can recall is the Pick of Destiny soundtrack(I do a killer Master Exploder), but I have to disagree in general.

That said, I doubt there's any truth to this. It doesn't make any sense from a technological standpoint.

joab7774065d ago

Oh nooooooooooo! I wont be able to play my scratched up version of Ten by Pearl Jam any longer...at least on that machine. This means i may have to transfer my digital library to the ps4.

joeorc4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

Imalwaysright4065d ago

And WTF does Nintendo have to do with this?

Anon19744065d ago

I was originally a bit disappointed by this as I no longer own a CD player and I still have a tonne of CD's I'm too lazy to convert - but upon reflection I think I've put a CD into my PS3 maybe once in the past 6 or 7 years. Meh...

This is kind of a tragedy to me....What some fail to realize is, I, and a lot of people still play our disc based owned PSone classics that will never make it to the ps store, example being legend of legaia....I hope this isn't true.

morkendo234065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

no backward compatibility ps1,ps2,ps3.. cd's now

nothing so far impress me enough to want one.

MRMagoo1234065d ago

you are def the only one.

camel_toad4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

That doesn't rule out cassette tape support though! MC Hammer ftw.

rainslacker4065d ago

Seems really odd since Sony has a pretty big music division, and they still sell quite a lot of physical CD's.

If true I guess it also rules out physical PS1 and some PS2 BC through emulation.:(

Mounce4065d ago

I totally love putting my old Michael Jackson CD's into my PS3 instead of playing Games.

Because PS3 is a music box of Compact Discs made in the 70-80's and 90's.

DVD BC? Obviously will stay since it's one of the other primary formats in the current generation of media among Blu-ray itself.

Bowzabub4065d ago

Why? When it will be a media streaming monster. Sony said the system will be interconnected with multiple devices. Problem solved. Next!

zeal0us4065d ago

CD is a format that is slowly dying thx to digital distribution.

I rarely see people even walk around with cd players anymore. Beside there are multiple ways to get music on your console without the need of a cd.

GribbleGrunger4065d ago (Edited 4065d ago )

I've got to say this is a little disappointing. It's nothing that would stop a single person from buying a PS4 but it's still a pity that they removed it.

And as wishingW3L has pointed out below, it also confirms no PS1 compatibility through a disc ...

Tyre4065d ago

This is complete BS cause then you will not be able to play PS1 games and that's a given in all playstations.

FamilyGuy4065d ago

It's not only stupid, it's impossible. There's no way it's gonna ignore cd support, sony SELLS CDs. Any device that supports dvds also supports cds, this is and idiotic article.

I expect to hear confirmation of this being bs from sony official within 24 hours.

The PS4 wilm be a media hub with 7.1 Stereo surround sound, ignoring the crystal clear, lossless audio on CDs would be idiotic.

LOL, kotaku get worse every day -_-

goodbye PS1 BC. ;(

Seriously, I can't believe the PS4 will not even support PS1! So they are gonna force us to keep buying classics digitally and it will not even have BC with the content you have bought off the PSN on PS3. Wow, and to think that the Vita can do it....

cl19834065d ago

The only bc will be by streaming digital copies.

Jobesy4065d ago

I love when people say, "they will force us" lol. Do you know the definition of force? Nobody is forcing you to sell your PS1, PS2, PS3. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything. Nobody is forcing you to play games.

You want unlimited bc, build a pc.

SugarSoSweet4065d ago

I did fuck the PS4 if it can't play physical PS1 games

meatnormous4065d ago

My 64 bit widows will not install games from 1999 because they have an old installer. I really want Dune 2000 on my pc again and I can't figure out how to get it to work.

Studio-YaMi4065d ago

You do know a PC with a PSone emulator can play PSone games .. heck even PS2 games can be played decently with a good rig.

And NO ONE is forcing you !

meatnormous4065d ago

PCs can emulate the ps1. So if the PS4 is using the same architecture as pcs, why can't they emulate it as well?Pay the guys that made the emulators and give them a dev kit. I bet they can get emulators working for the ps1 and ps2.

Studio-YaMi4065d ago

@meatnormous

That's actually a pretty GOOD point !
don't know why I never thought of that before...

That's kinda stupid on Sonys part or maybe they see it in another way ?

maniacmayhem4065d ago

I think it's pretty obvious why, Sony wants to offer all of their back catalog games for sale through their cloud service.

Why add pre-installed emulators when you can have people pay for their cloud service and re-purchase or purchase back catalogs of games.

meatnormous4065d ago

I really don't understand why no backwards compatibility with ps1 or ps2 games for the ps4. I can undertsand why there will be no B/C for the ps3 games becuase it uses the cell. But, there really is no excuse for them not to have ps1 or ps2 b/c. I want all my final fantasy games on one console (besides the mess of 13).

meatnormous4065d ago

I completly agree maniacmayhem. The mighty dollar is the boss of everyone. I have hardly bought any ps1 or ps2 classics off the store, I still own all my games from those generations. I do still have my ps1 and ps2 as well, but I have been spoiled by wireless controllers.

He didnt nix emulation software, just said they would hav to see. BC isnt viable financially...it just isnt. Thet have done their homework. Only a certain percentage even use it. And it would raise the price of the ps4, so just keep ur ps3 for a little while. They have already said that it wont cost $700, more like $400-500. While i agree that it would be nice to have online content, i have to agree that for a company that isnt doing great and embarking on a new console, it is smart. They want ppl to keep the ps3. Then they price drop it and this holliday, they know that ps3 sales may help while they are trying to sell a new console. Ill be honest, i dont know how much i will play it once the ps4 launches, but it wont be for shortage of software. There are sooooooo many damn games i just cant seem to find time to play. I figure that if launch isnt as wealthy in software as they claim, i will go back and play all the games i havnt finiahed...or use it as a streaming device in my bedroom.

Since I rip CD's from my PC and transfer via USB stick. This doesn't bother me.

JD_Shadow4065d ago

But it might bother me.

I have a LOT of music that I can transfer, as well as a LOT of CDs. Now, if I really had the patience, I could take the CD, put it onto my hard drive on my computer, hook up the PS4 to my Wi-Fi or wired connection, find where the thing is on the network, then transfer and hope my connection doesn't fuck up, or that I can do a ton of moving my USB drive back and forth, deleting songs I had put on my PS4 before getting the next batch I want.

OR, I could just pop the CD I want to rip onto the PS4 INTO the PS4, click a button, and have it do what it does.

Which of the two sounds easier to you? Because I would like the ease of knowing that the CD in the PS4 would be more reliable than moving back and forth all damn day or hoping that nothing goes wrong with my network or internet.

Basically put, things like this bother me. This "let them eat cake" mentality is bothersome enough, but the "we'll take that cake without question" response is even more troublesome. This is just a rumor, yes, but if true, this would be devastating not just because of Sony being more draconian by the second on this sort of thing, but we, as Sony fans, would have a chance to say "no, that's not okay" and decided to instead bend over and take it like bitches because we were all being yes men.

I'm hoping, praying to GOD that this is a false rumor. We all deserved to be fucked over if it is true and we just say "oh well".

You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long11d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197211d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 11d ago
DivineHand12511d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91311d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91310d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit10d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 10d ago
Christopher11d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6911d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit10d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher11d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken11d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2311d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218311d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

blackblades17d ago

Sony is like the only ones outta the 3 that has atuff like like this pop up changing thing in ways.

just_looken17d ago

Sony in the past has always been first at bat with new ideas/tech but in the end never fully use it or just toss it away.

blackblades17d ago

I think they did use some but yeah most usually never happened but at least they thought about it. Sony seeks things like this and other, Nintendo seek different ways of playing going by there different controler designs and console designs.

Big victory for Sony. And a long time coming.

DarXyde19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Crazy to think the savings from this lawsuit allows them to develop one AAA game.

Make it Bloodborne 2, please and thank you.

Sounds like patent trolling they tried the same thing against Nintendo with the same pattern.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both

Pyrofire9519d ago

Patents suck. Most of them are complete garbage.

Knightofelemia19d ago

So to recoup the money Genuine is going to take on Nintendo or Microsoft next. I hate patent lawyers they are some of the worst bottom feeders out there.
