PS1 RPG Classics That Hold Up

Game Informer - Going back to your favorite game over a decade later can be tough. You realize that the graphics that you once thought were the most gorgeous to grace your screen are not only unimpressive, but downright ugly. Gameplay systems often crumble under the weight of years and stories just don’t carry the same weight they once did. You begin to see the evolution of how far games have come, which can not only be eye-opening, but also mystifying.

Replaying ff9 on epsxe just now, really enjoying it and it definitely holds up, though I forgot how short that first disk was!

If you ask me Final Fantasy IX is one of the best RPGs ever

NeXXXuS4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

Vagrant Story was also a one-of-a-kind masterpiece during the PS1 era. Very beautiful game.

I have played just about every rpg that its on the market for every console that scored above 70% and by far Final Fantasy VIII its the best of them all. The draw system, GF summons, the building of annoying squall into an intellectual leader owns every bit of hype. The game might seem a little complicated at first, but onced you know it, its the best RPG one can dream off, off the record Star wars Knights of the old republic its my second greatest rpg choice but its on xbox.

Relientk774074d ago

^ This is why the PS1 is my favorite system

its an RPG gamer's paradise

belac094074d ago

i have played all of these too, i LOVE the good ol' dayz!

miyamoto4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

They said Chrono Cross can't match Chrono Trigger but they were wrong Chrono Cross was as fun as Chrono Trigger. Kid is still so awesome.

May I single out Mega Man Legends 1 & 2 are so much fun too.

I think Media Molecule are coming up with an RPG maker of sorts for PS4.

We need Sega Saturn RPGs too like Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

you couldn't say it better for FFVIII. It was the first ever RPG I played. It that game that got me hooked to the industry. Everything about it so breakthrough, it deserves the name Final fantasy for the simple reason it's genuinely unique in the franchise, ( I think FFVII holds too much gameplay mechanics to the snes FF's).

I have never seen other games using a system resembling the junction system. FFVIII is a classic. My gripe with the game is that the junction system is not justified, the game is not hard enough to use it to full potential, except for the Adel sorceress fight!

Tapani4073d ago

You have a very good taste sir!

There are still a few of those that I need to play.

Those were the good days. Truly the golden age of gaming.

Ok I'm not going to cry... oh what the hell... waaaahhhh I want to go back to that nostalgic timeeeeeeee!!! :(

Tzuno4073d ago

I would kill to have a Way of the Samurai game with a huge budget and modern tech... The first game was one of my greatest joys on PS2 back in the day. And I really hope From Software will do something with Tenchu... I hate that they're just sitting on the IP like it doesn't even exist.

Relientk7711d ago

Don't play with my feelings like that.

Also, new Tenchu please!

TheColbertinator11d ago

Tenchu would be superb in this day and age. Ninja and samurai games are hot right now and more is better.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

ApocalypseShadow13d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle12d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D

FinalFantasyFanatic12d ago

I had the Genesis and the Saturn, also had the SNES and 64, I never got a Dreamcast for some reason, but I never saw one in the stores either.
