Sony's frustration over PS4 hardware 'cynicism'

The head of PlayStation UK has expressed his opinion over the backlash Sony received following its decision not to show PlayStation 4 hardware during its reveal last week, telling VideoGamer.com that "it's much more important to see what the damn thing does" than showing "the shiniest piece of black, green or purple plastic".

Most (if not all) of the cynicism comes from people that want the PS4 (and Sony in general) to fail. I've seen some ridiculous, yet very popular youtube videos that are supposed to be funny but you can clearly see that they're trying to kill as much hype as they can.

I for one was happy with the PS4 announcement because they focus on games and the social intergration for their new console which is what I wanted to see. Couldn't give two shits about how the console looks just have those beefy specs in place.

I will day one the PS4 I won't be getting the nextbox or Wii U. PC will remain my lead platform but PS4 is gonna be my console of choice.

For next gen I'm wanting to get a Nextbox but considering MS's shift onto casual games I'm going to have to wait and see how well they support their platform with games for gamers.

I think Sony showed exactly what they needed to show. Unveiling the controller is far more important because that is what we will be using to play our games. The system itself and what it looks like isn't all that important. Why show everything now prior to E3. I was actually expecting less but Sony delivered with 2 hours of stuff.

Sony could have gone bankrupt. They are still in danger. The PS4 does go a long way toward getting them healthy again. I think they are making a mistake not adding the tech to other devices. That is one area Microsoft will have an advantage. They are already selling Kinect to TV makers(including Sony, at least they were talking to Sony about it). Any revenue stream helps.

But that is my point. Sony could always depend on gaming in the past. Every other division was up and down. Then they hit a patch where almost every division was bad and on top of that the PS3 was killing gaming too. The PS2 couldn't overcome the losses from the PS3. It almost bankrupted the company. I still think they need to make changes in TVs. Or maybe drop them for now. Or use their name to go bargain TVs until gaming and cuts can build up their cash.

It's more like the fear that they will or can fail. So far they make pc like games with out pc like features. Yet they alway sell an expensive gimped box or console.

People want to know the price? Is it the same as a gt690? If so then you might want to go with that it is closer to future proof, which doesn't exist in the pc world. Only backwards console marketing.

Actually I would love to see Sony make games I like, that would be great. Yet they don't so I have a pc for that.

The problem is Sony doesn't have any thing for me which might be a problem nvidia runs into every other year. I think people are saying we don't need movie gaming creeping into our real games just because you can make a supped up laptop, we have that power already. When you run on tech hype you have to pull an apple... Retna displays are bueatiful and you don't need specs to see it. Intel make very very good chips, talk about a friggin red ocean and Alienware makes some really great branded pcs. Before you could hide behind obscure tech yet you just stepped into the benchmarking hell that is pc gaming.

Really they should know better, they have a laptop line that doesn't do well and there are plenty of reasons why. No one cares about the beats like headphone inflated ego pricing. Once you step into to high end people want results! So the hardware doesn't give you a free pass like last gen.

Like I said welcome to pc gaming even apple knows it is not easy, they are not just fighting consoles any more. Yet they failed to see this.

It doesn't make sense to want any console to fail. Whatever succeeds and gives you the best games, at the best price, is something a consumer should want.

Being a fan of a company who wants your money is just daft.

The next Xbox will have to do a lot to compete with the Ps4 now. The developer and user friendly hardware means a lot of people and developers will be picking it as their next console, myself included.

In order to compete Microsoft will have to either A: Make equally inexpensive, developer friendly hardware. or B: Just make it that much more powerful, and focus their adverising on that.

If Microsoft does neither, then the next Xbox will have nothing going for it. The Ps4 will still have free online play too, so Microsoft will be really stupid to keep theirs paid for.

I'm looking forward to next-gen now. Not all of the games looked that much of a graphical leap (other than the Unreal Demo and Final fantasy), but it was like that at the beginning of this generation too. By the time some games I want to come out, the Ps4 will at the very least be affordable.

Can i just say to the fanboys that keep going on about the terraflops of ps4 ect like just because of the 1.8 terraflops to 720 1.2 ect means ps4 is more powerful it's not the case,there are cards that do 576 giggaflops and outperform cards with 1.2 terraflops so more than double yet not as capable ? so it's more to do with a balance of Memory Bandwidth and RAM as well as the cards features,stream proccessors are important as well.

A gpu power has more to do with what RAM you use SRAM,ESRAM,DRAM,eDRAM ect which gives you your Bandwidth RAM,this balanced with main RAM ect is more important than terraflops ect much more important as them 2 things are what make you get the most out of modern features.

WiiU has 2GB of GDDR5 RAM,1 GB of VRAM.

WiiU has well over 200GB of fast Bandwidth RAM on that gpgpu and that's just the 70% we know of ?

WiiU use tons of eDRAM on chip for its cpu/gpgpu which makes the main RAM not as important.

Even if its a quick look, you show the form factor. Have you ever known Apple to announce a new phone or pad and not show the device form factor? Nintendo even with the WiiU which was a presser dominated by the gamepad showed the hardware briefly and then focused back on the controller.

That's not the point. How do you know what you were seeing was actually running on a console and not on a PC with specs for what they WANT to have the console to be? It creates that cloud of doubt. You show the console and you operate it there so people see it with their own eyes. PS3 had problems at launch but they turned it around quite dramatically and now it's a great console with a large variety of exclusives.

I simply find it silly that people are actually up in arms about not seeing the shiny, plastic container that is the console itself.

We already know the specs and inner hardware and have seen demos of what it can do. The only aspect of the console that we know absolutely nothing about is its appearance. The outer shell. Its aesthetic value.

But why do people care so much? When you're gaming, are you really staring at your console or are you staring at the screen and enjoying what it is providing you?

Current rumors suggest that Sony is keeping out of the public eye, because there is a special feature that would be spoiled if the console itself was unveiled. However, I believe that they're keeping hidden so as to maximize curiosity and excitement for the console until they likely unveil it at E3. Doing this will guarantee them an even bigger splash at E3.

My biggest concern with them not revealing the console is the suggestion (from Sony I believe) that the design wasn't finalised yet, which is why it wasn't revealed... Isn't this going to dramatically reduce any final testing phase of the PS4 to ensure that there aren't long-term issues with regard to heat and ventilation? I mean, they have to get it into production as well!

I doubt I'll invest in either the PS4 or 720 for the first few months because of my concerns over this. With those specs, coupled with a small oversight in design and you could have an awesome gaming oven :/

It's Sony. They usually don't release vaporware. Sometimes they are late, but do people really believe they spent all that money if they wouldn't be confident they could deliver?

I think they have an aggressive time table ahead of them, and final silicon might not have been available for the event - or at least to run the code on; or wasn't available for some studios to actually port code. But, still, it's not like they would go on stage with a blank check. Dev boxes are out. And not in PC cases. So, my best guess is, we finally have silicon. Time till GDC to port more stuff, and till E3 to see those things running actual games. Some probably ran on earlier prototype HW. So what? Can only get better.

Be prepared for a full scale internet smear campaign put forth my MS fanboys and MS itself regarding the PS4. I really can't wait to see what straws they grasp at. Here's what we know thus far:

The damn thing is uber powerful and developer friendly
Cross game chat and networking will be a key feature
They are focusing on GAMES. Games of the highest quality.

I speculate too that Sony learned it's lesson hardcore from last generation and will come out the gate with a competitively priced product. $399 for this thing will be a show stopper.

I never said Sony was innocent in their claims prior to the release of the PS3 now did I? It was still a solid console however and produced far greater AAA exclusive content than what the competition was offering. Now moving on the present...where most of us like to live:

They did present hardware at the PS4 conference. We know exactly what is going to be in the box spec wise and that's good enough for most. I could give a shit about what plastic box they put it in. I can wait until E3 for that and a price.

Sony has thus far been humble about the PS4 and have learned from their past mistakes. It will be very very hard to downplay this console and it will be hilarious to see what people have to say in order to bash it.

The leaked 720/Durango specs are half that of what the PS4 has under it's hood. Also, do you honestly see MS straying away from the Kinect push/Casual market and putting a ton of effort into the hardcore gamer? No. They'll hinge on the typical Halo hype like they always have.

3rd party support? Looks like PS4 games will obviously be the superior version this time around. Not that I give a shit about it. Just another talking point a fanboy can't throw up anymore.

Social networking/cross game chat? Sony has took what MS had touched upon and made it substantially better.

People can stay mad at Sony for 2005 mistakes, or they can look to the future at what is being offered.

Well, I really liked what the PS4 will be delivering. I am one of the people who was eager to see "the box" in the reveal conference. When it didn't show I got a little disappointed but then I thought, it's not a big deal, if not now then at E3 or whenever Sony decides to reveal it.

It is going to happen sooner or later. I still don't know a solid reason why they havent showed us the console system on Feb 20th.

What makes things worse is when "respected" news organisations such as the bbc run news stories about the fan boys comments being negative instead of just reporting the facts about the new system further fueling negativity towards the ps4 from the casuals that are watching tv/listening to the radio!

Personnally I'm pretty happy with the new system specs and what 8GB of ram will allow the new system to do in terms of multi tasking! If they can keep the price around £300 I'll be even happier!
I like the idea of the share button and whether u like it or not i think this may well have a big impact on our online social lives as we become more active in our friends gaming lives! Last time I checked the console was about games, if it provides games and features you want then that's what counts and not what logo it has on the box (especially knowing that hardware is manufactured by other companies and assembled by the third one). Imagine such hypothetical situation: right now we dont know how next xbox and ps will look like, and say you get both of them but they are not marked which is which. So will you stand there and wait until someone will tell you which one belongs to your "fanboy club" or you will pick the best one?

And who cares about presentation? It's just a presentation. Why should Microsoft be scared or try to compete with Sony about it?
