PlayStation 4 won't cost $599 at launch...

Sony America head 'hopes' PlayStation 4 won't cost $599 at launch, says specs aren't finalized yet...

Here is hoping this is true because a $599 price tag will be a major issue like it was for the PS3

aquamala4071d ago

I didn't see anything that would make this a $599 console, I think $399 is reasonable to expect for the base model. maybe a $499 model with bigger hard drive.

Kalowest4071d ago

To try and make money back because of R&D cost.

majiebeast4070d ago

R&D isnt nearly as high as with the ps3 everything from the gpu, cpu, ram is off the shelves. I think we will see a 399,99$ console with no extra's and a 499,99$ with a bigger HDD,1 year ps plus and a voucher for a digital copy of Killzone:SF,Driveclub or Knack.

RioKing4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

^I'd say a free month of PS+ is more realistic. Right now the PS3 bundles that offer free games come with a free month of PS+, while the white PS3 bundle comes with a free year of PS+..but no games.

Tr10wn4070d ago

" I think we will see a 399,99$ console with no extra's and a 499,99$ with a bigger HDD,1 year ps plus and a voucher for a digital copy of Killzone:SF,Driveclub or Knack."

Thats the perfect for me $499,99 with lots of extra if not ill buy the cheaper one and get watch dogs alone, i doubt DriveClub will be a launch title tho.

blitz06234070d ago

$100 more for a bigger hard drive will not do it. They will add a game or PS+ 1 year membership, or both, or more stuff.

TheGamerDood4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

Uhhh...the 8GB of GDDR5 ram isn't freakin' cheap my friend. 400 for the base model 500 for the Move PSEye 2.0 w/1TB HD.

Skip_Bayless4070d ago

The more expensive it is the better because I like feeling like i'm the only owner of the console for a couple years atleast. The appeal of having a PS3 and 360 now is lame cause everyone has one already.

sobekflakmonkey4069d ago

@Skip_Bayless

lol you hipster, but I get what you're saying, you feel special because you could afford it, I honestly think it would be bad for Sony though, they wouldn't make as much money, I'd definitely pay $499.99 for a larger HDD and PS+ for a year.

T3MPL3TON 4069d ago

TheGamerDood: Uhhh...the 8GB of GDDR5 ram isn't freakin' cheap my friend.

Uhhh... The 8GB of GDDR5 ram is really freakin' cheap my friend.

People seem to think, GDDR5 is gonna cost them thousands. It wont.

bangshi4069d ago

@T3MPL3TON, no it won't be thousands but it will be a couple of hundreds dollars.

Kevin ButIer4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

1TB? I was wondering if Sony will add a mixed SDD HDD feature as Sony did in some of their ultrabooks, I know SDD is expensive but it would be use only for key processes and loading time reduction.I wouldn't mind to see a smaller drive with this feature.

BISHOP-BRASIL4069d ago

@Kevin Butler

Exactly, with all the talk about no loading times, access time is a concern. If you have 1TB of data in 7200rpm drive you gonna need a lot of redundant data or markers, otherwise loading times will still be noticeable. If you go with an SSD that problem is solved but it's yet to be seen if it's cost friendly to add on a console.

TruthbeTold4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

I think we're way beyond the years of charging an extra $100 based on HD size. Storage is so cheap now that even non-tech people realize that the extra money isn't about that. It's just that in making different sku's more affordable, they'd take a bigger hit on the cheaper ones, and count on the more loyal customers, or people with more money for the others.

People buy the Deluxe Wii U more than the basic not only because 8 gigs is a joke, but because of the game pack in and the color matches more home entertainment set ups - AND the sku's are so close in price that it makes sense. I think Sony will do something similar with the PS4.

elmaton984069d ago

Yeah but there were like 5 mills people who bought the ps3 at that price but yes is a not good thing and i believe the thing will cost 499.99 which ill be ok with it

Blade Runner4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

People need to stop crying. Its 2013 not 2006. If you cant afford a 700 dollar system you need to find another hobby. 599 if they make it that cheap it will be the bottom sku. Fine, at least it will keep the little kids from crying so much. For me I will gladly pay the higher sku of 699-799. Yeah it might come with a ripped off xbox controler (triggers, sticks and mic port) but it will still be the best system. So stop your crying about price and just beg your parents for money.

knowyourstuff4069d ago

People just don't get it. The PS3 cost almost 900 damn dollars to manufacture. The graphics chip Nvidia just put out, the GeForce Titan, costs $1000 alone. It only has 6GB of GDDR5 RAM. The PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. If anyone thinks this will be cheap to manufacture has their head up their a$$.

LOGICWINS4071d ago

$399 is fair, but I'd like a $499 model with that sensor and a game.

Ju4069d ago

Camera will be in all models. Controller is build to require it (light bar). They will try to avoid fragmentation. Move will be an option (I guess Move and Nav will still work?)

For me, price doesn't really matter. You'd need an $800 budget or something anyway. I want 3-4 games as well, and those will add quite a bit to the pricing. With that said, I'd want a big HDD, too. I hope it'll fit into that budget.

AngelicIceDiamond4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

Sony wont price it at 600$ no way even if it is brand new hardware.

But

I do believe Sony will have the price higher than what people are expecting. Sony needs profit from the PS4 Sony's financial standings do rely heavily on their gaming division Sony wants to keep the losses as less damaging as possible. So, theirs a high chance Sony's console will be a bit pricey at launch, realistically.

EDIT: Jack Tretton "hopes" it won't cost 600$. Crossing fingers they don't

Jakens4070d ago

The price for the PS4 won't nearly be as good (if you know what I mean) as the reactions to the price itself (if you know what I mean)

MsmackyM4069d ago

I'll be surprised if it's less then $500, either way I'm buying.

LOL i remember watching that back in the days of the PS2 if my memory don't fail me, my friends and i use to think how we will play metal gear like that :D good memories.

AzaziL4069d ago

great, by the time it releases, i'll have a heart attack from playing it...

007Bond4070d ago

Sure as hell better not be if P$ is smart enough they'll make it affordable unlike their last console.

Jaces4070d ago

It's not so much the console I'm curious about but the controller. As amazing as the new controller looks I'm a little afraid to see what price they plan to stamp on it.

We will see soon enough.

fourOeightshark4070d ago

It looks like a $65 controller to me.

Jaces4070d ago

I could see that. Included with the PS4 I don't think they should have a problem selling them. But I do see more people bringing over their own controllers to play at a friends house. lol

Hell, we don't even do that anymore with everything being online. I think I'd buy a second at launch and 2 is enough for me.

Jakens4070d ago

That controller will not be cheap! There are $70 controllers out now with about half of those features.

Jakens4070d ago

Would laugh if Sony (or MS) says their controller won't ship with the console.

Jaces4069d ago

Yet I don't think they're dumb enough to make a controller worth anywhere above $70. $65 is the limit for me but who knows, we've still got some time before numbers are made factual.

donman14069d ago

The cost for PS4 that makes sense would be a range of $400 to $450 at max. Anything above those price point will mean another poor start in sales for Sony. The will apply to Microsoft Xbox720.

Me-Time4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

Good point, but 500 (for the first 18 months) won't be totally unreasonable.

the controller + decent enough headset

SilentNegotiator4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

PS4 won't be $599 simply because they need to avoid the stigma of the Ps3's launch from being associated with the Ps4's launch. $500 or less is what the base console will cost.

wastedcells4069d ago

Think you nailed it $399.99 for sure.

xtremeimport4069d ago

if they use a SSD I can see that adding a bit more since they are still fairly more than a sata hdd.

HellzAssassin4069d ago

You realize SSD's are SATA too right? SATA is just the type of connection it uses. You're referring to a mechanical HDD.

xtremeimport4069d ago

umm, SATA and a solid state drive are completely different mate.

Nicolee4069d ago

SSD are run via SATA ( 1 . 2 or 3 )

CRASHBASHUK4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

yep for UK a £299 with a 750GB HDD with 1 controller then a £399 with a 1TB HDD with 2 controllers

CRASHBASHUK4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

why disagree? the ps3 60GB was £425 when it first came out in UK

stragomccloud4069d ago

I hope they stick with standard 2.5 drives so I can just buy a cheaper model and then get my own hdd or ssd and rock that.

popup4069d ago

I really hope it costs whatever is needed to keep that RAM figure included. By the whole world moaning about spending that amount of money, we all run the risk of forcing Sony to react with a dumb down on the specs they can still change. It has happened before and us gamers are only going to make it happen again.

raymantalk14069d ago

you lot make me laugh you dont see anything that would make it cost $599 do any of you know how expensive gddr5 ram is ? that alone could hike the price and as for the apu/gpu even that is not exactly off the shelf item as it has been slightly modified especially for the console, also there is this thing called inflation where things actually cost more than they used too you know when you goto shop and buy a loaf of bread and it has gone up do you they say i am not buying that its too dear no you dont you pay it as you know things always will get dearer, anyway if it does come out for $599 i personally think it is still very cheap for what you are getting, i hope it does come out allot cheaper but even if it does not i will still be buying one i wont whine about the price.

Amplitude4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

The thing comes with a really powerful console bundled with a controller, a headset, and a 3D camera.

I dunno, i'd go 599 again if that was the price. OBVIOUSLY i'd be happy if it was cheaper but just saying, i'd go 599. I don't regret getting the PS3 at 599 for a second >.>

lilbrat234069d ago

I agree with Aquamala I been thinking the same price range $399-$499 nothing more. I just hope game prices don't go up.

UnholyLight4069d ago (Edited 4069d ago )

Meh, I won't be that bothered if it was $599 with a mic, 300Gb+ memory, a controller and if possible a game packed in.

Not sure how memory comes but anything above 300Gb at a $599 price would be great in my opinion. The console is going to be packing 7years newer tech than the PS3 was so if it did end up costing that much, I would be alright with it. Same goes for Xbox if it launches around the same price point, Ill be buying both.

EDIT** After reading one line into the article what I just said stands true. You guys should learn to read:

"I guess the image I would give [compared to PS3] is that it's like a magnifying lens," he told Digital Spy.

"Every core pillar of the game is able to be pushed further. We're able to push the immersion. The fidelity of the graphics is one part of the immersion, but it's more than graphics."

OBVIOUSLY MEANS THEY ARE REFERRING TO THE PS3 AND THE OTHER CURRENT GEN CONSOLES.

SOM3ROiD4069d ago

It's a no brainer for this console to be well under $600.

Interesting

givemeshelter4071d ago

They are waiting for Microsoft most likely to reveal their final specs....as Microsoft is doing the same with Sony LOL

akaakaaka4070d ago

this is truly interesting let's hope for m$ to force sony to update and be better!
but i doubt that..

KwietStorm_BLM4070d ago

Even if at this very minute they are not finalized, I wouldn't realistically expect much different than maybe clock speeds on the CPU or RAM. They don't want to miss this holiday.

TheDivine4070d ago

If they announced the console to launch in 6-9 months and its not finalized or starting to be built they were afraid of something and pulled the trigger too soon. That can't be because Kz has to be near completed unless its another 6 month developer job like the vita titles Sony shit out. I believe they said infamous was just a trailer, no gameplay which means they're pulling the same shit as last gen announcing games before they've started.

Either way no games they showed made me want a ps4. A couple tech demos that might become decent games years from from now but the only good game set in stone for me is watch dogs. That I could play on the next Xbox or pc so its not a reason to spend 4-500 dollars. They need exclusives and not timed dlc or another fps. Same for MS. Halo and Gears won't sell me. Bring new ip's and do not focus on Kinect.

deep_fried_bum_cake4071d ago

Yeah, the Xbox 720 will be $299 at release.

Oh, and I'm going to be inaugurated as the new Pope next month as well.

$299 is too cheap for something with half decent specs and I expect the 720 to be competing with the PS4 in that area. $299 is highly unlikely.

gta28004070d ago

A cheap bastards dream come true...but I highly doubt that.

KwietStorm_BLM4070d ago

I never heard of any rumors saying it would be that cheap, and I would have laughed if I did. The Wii U costs more than that. The [rumored] Xbox specs may not be as powerful as the PS4, but they're up there, and it won't be 299.

Qrphe4070d ago

I wish, but the fact that it's going to be bundled with a more advanced version of Kinect and that Microsoft has been spending a lot of money on creating TV/entertainment content for their upcoming consoles doesn't sound like it would.

Ju4069d ago

Well, MS could pull a $299 because they have deep pockets. But I would be surprised if this would be possible, guessing it will come with a new Kinect (well, which could be cost reduced, though). They'd have to save costs somewhere to reach that price unless the specs are far below the PS4.

I still can't evaluate what those rumored specs are compared to the PS4. Yes, DDR3 is cheaper, but the chipset looks far more complicated; not sure if it'll cost more than PS4's APU design (I guess it does), but it saves on CUs to balance this out?

Unless MS pulls another 4GB (or 16GB) flash version to shave off those $100. Could well be. I can see MS playing the price game more than Sony. They have the financial muscles to do that.

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long11d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197211d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 11d ago
DivineHand12511d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91311d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91310d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit10d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 10d ago
Christopher11d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6910d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit10d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher11d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken11d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2311d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218311d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder11d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
