Preview: Gears of War: Judgment: Plays almost exactly like every Gears title - Canada.com

Gears of War: Judgment plays almost exactly like all previous Gears of War titles.

For hardcore Gears fans, this isn't a bad thing, but if you were hoping for something different, you'll be disappointed.

Well, Gears 2 played quite differently than Gears 1. Gears 3 played quite differently than Gears 1 and 2. I suppose, it all comes down to the speed and controls of the game. Any hardcore player can tell the difference from a mile away.

I don't see how a 3rd person cover game could 'play different' from its predecessor. Unless they go into 1ST person? Name any established franchise that 'plays different' from others in the series, whilst remaining in the same genre. I hear crickets.

coolbeans4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

From what I've played: The KZ3 demo plays much differently than the adored KZ2.

Edit: The Witcher 1 and Witcher 2. ;)

darthv724073d ago

"almost" exactly not a definitive "exactly".

Subtle differences but they make it sound like playing like the rest is a BAD thing. not in the least. It shows that the formula for success is if it aint broke why fix it.

i enjoy the gears games for their action, story and fun. If judgement has that, then im sold.

EVILDEAD3604073d ago

No Active Reload...COMPLETELY different experience.

JoySticksFTW4073d ago

I know I'm in the minority, but I want Mario to play like Mario games, Demon/Dark Souls games to play like Souls games, and I want Gears to play like Gears.

That's why I'm getting those games in the first place. I like and want the feel and controls of that particular series just in a new story / scenario.

If I want a different play style, I'll just play a different game.

Again, that may just be me though.

Blastoise4073d ago

Devil may cry, Killzone 3, Battlefield 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Modern Warfare 2, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 12, Resident Evil 4, Super Smash Bro's Brawl...

maniacmayhem4073d ago

If it ain't broke don't fix it. We have had many, many games that changed the formula and failed and lost most of their user base.

I say keep the formula that has made it such a success and just make tweaks and changes here and there. Offer new modes which they are doing.

DigitalRaptor4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

All I can say is that if this game reviews better than Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time then something is up based on the same argument of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

coolbeans4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

You see...the last Sly Cooper before Thieves was made in the PS2 era. Since then, reviewers have burned through numerous 3D platformers that may have provided some sort of nuance (be it gameplay, online functions, etc.) that makes the recent Sly feel "old-hat" in their opinion. (Note: I haven't played it so that's pure speculation)

In Gears' case, those reviewers may have already predetermined "from what I've played, no other TPS series does X Y Z better," therefore making it harder to demand greater changes.

To say Judgment demands as much reviewer scrutiny for remaining similar to its 2-year-old predecessor compared to a sequel that (supposedly) remains similar to its 8-year-old, last-gen ancestor is simply absurd.

Edit: But I still agree with your sentiment of possible double standards (like throwing 9's at it for being the same) when it arrives.

gears 1 was the best just remake that for next xbox lol..

Jek_Porkins4073d ago

That is an odd title considering the Gears titles all played differently. Gears 3 was the fastest paced and my favorite because they introduced Death Match. If Judgment plays anything like 3 I'll have something to do for the next year+

Gears of War: Judgment - 10 Years of Gears' Most Misunderstood Release

Gears of War: Judgment launched 10 years ago today, and quickly became one of the most misunderstood titles in the series.

ZwVw401d ago

Easily the best control-wise of the series. Judgment introduced melee-ing with the lancer and is still the only installment of the series (to date) which enables you to change weapons while roadie running simultaneously.

Gears 2&5 are the worst controlling in the series.

ocelot07401d ago

It killed the series for me tbh.

Sciurus_vulgaris401d ago

The Arcady aspects of the campaign should have been unlocked after completing a campaign play through. Seeing score screen after battles caused awkward pacing. The multiplayer was too different from other Gears games.

giovonni401d ago

Judgment felt more like an expansion than an actually game. To me, I was fatigued from the series at that point. The story was ok, over all it wasn’t bad.

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies666d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638666d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72667d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337667d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever666d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

MadLad667d ago

3
5
2
1
4
Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds667d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.

It's brilliant but personally liked part one more. It's the only one that had a near horror movie vibe to it in parts, the atmosphere was amazing.

Also, the commercial for it was 🔥🔥🔥

Neonridr800d ago

Mad World was such a perfect song for that trailer. I loved part 1 too just because it was so fresh at the time. The series has been solid, but experiencing everything for the first time was pretty awesome.

ChasterMies800d ago

Gears of War 2 has one of the greatest campaigns of all time. Carmine, all that juice, fighting inside a giant worm, and riding monsters.

Knightofelemia801d ago

Gears 1 and 2 will always be my favorite Gears titles. The scene where Dom find his wife and then has to shoot her was an epic scene.

monkey602800d ago

I always found that scene laughably bad myself. Fantastic game though.

1 will always be my favourite. Most were great with the exception of 4 being okay and judgement being terrible.

They still have the most satisfying headshots from any multiplayer game around.

lucian229800d ago

Nah I laughed, the acting was soooooooooo bad

KicksnSnares801d ago

My favorite Gears game list
1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 1
4. Gears 4
5. Gears 5
6. Gears Judgement

Gears Of War is my favorite video game franchise. I can’t imagine how Gears 6 will look in UE5 after watching Hellblade 2 gameplay trailer

RetroCaptainSteve801d ago

Or if they remake 2 and 3 with that engine.

KicksnSnares801d ago

There is a rumored Marcus Fenix collection (Gears 2 & 3 remake) in the works at the Coalition. Hopefully, it’s true, but I doubt it.

Profchaos800d ago

For me you can't beat gears 1 the original was so fresh and revolutionary at the time.
Then basically I'd rank it 2,3,5,4 and judgement

Viljong801d ago (Edited 801d ago )

One of the reasons why i got the series x. Been fan since the first game.

myfathersbastard800d ago

Played them all recently on gamepass. Great games. But my favorites gotta be gears tactics. Don’t know why. I just had a blast with it lol
