I think Sony is not showing the actual console for a few reasons.

They probably don't want to give Microsoft the chance to analyze it and make adjustment to the next xbox. Sony are predominantly a hardware manufacturer, so they definitely don't want MS taking hints from them on how to integrate Kinect into their console in the same manner that they will do it.
If you notice that the original xbox's have always been bulkier and less appealing physically when compared to Sony.

Secondly, they obviously want to have a rebuttal for when MS finally announce their console. Notice that they didn't go into much detail about the new functionality of the controller either. I mean for something that's suppose to release this year, one would have to assume that final specs such as looks, and exterior components have been handed down to factories to begin production and assembly.

And judging from his answer, it seems that I might be spot. It as if they were really hoping to see the final Version of the PS4... I guess you'll have to find inspiration somewhere else maybe?......Again, just my opinion.

We'll get to actually SEE the console. And we'll probably see what the hell Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, and Polyphony Digital are working on.

I read this article with the tiniest hope that Sony will make a push for something better than the current Kinect type technology but it seem clear they are going down the light and camera tech which is the same crap as they have now.

It takes 5 minutes and a Google search to figure out what crazy, far out and potentially game changer stuff people are doing by hacking the current kinect, just imagine what can be done with the new gen... If I want to play sitting down in front of a TV and that will be the end of my interactive experience then I will get a high end PC which I can play many more games without being tied to the Sonny brand (and connect a Kinect to boot). Better graphics and a faster processor will not get you 6-7 years life span; is the same PS3 nightmare again and they don't realize it... If they are creating a PC on a Sonny package then they will get a PC lifespan of 2 max 3 years.

The last part rings true. You have to distinguish yourself from the PC realm. MS saw this and that is why they would never merge the two. Being in the computer market, technology is always changing. What showed up on the screen wasn't put out by a PS4 but by a PC.

Thus neither Sony or M$ have still shown their console.

What we saw was a lot of multiplatform games showing off their PC versions and trying to translate that into what it will look like on a PS4.

What we saw looked good, but not great. Only one game pushed boundaries, and was probably CGI, the game from Capcom. Though it was on a PC.

So when do we see what the PS4 component actually can put up on a screen? E3 probably. But I'm still wary of what we were shown.

The only game at the conference that wasn't running off of actual PS4 hardware was Watch_Dogs. Ubisoft said that they had it running on an actual PC spec'd to PS4 levels. But everything else that was shown was running off of the actual PS4 hardware.

Obviously they don't have the PS4 case/design yet, but they have the finalized hardware. The only things that will change between now and launch, spec wise, is variances in clock speeds and things like that to accomodate for temperature levels and whichever cooling solution they choose.

With 8-9 months or so till release they have the final design pretty much settled. Only things that may change now are mostly cosmetic(system color, chrome borders, font typing, etc).

If it's releasing this holiday it will be going into production within the next couple months, if it isn't already. Getting things ready for production takes a while as well, so I wouldn't doubt they had the final design ready sometime last year. Just the fact they had a final version of DS4 is pretty good evidence.

GDDR is different than DDR. Not a big shocker as GDDR5 is cheaper. found in most video cards in the 2GB variety. nVidia's new flagship will have 6 just on video card. That doesn't even include the 16 gb SYSTEM DDR3-2100 RAM that most people use anyway. BTW having ps4 just like a pc rocks! Finally get some better ports and who knows, an uncharted or two.

a) GDDR5 is most expensive type of memory these days. (*)
b) if you in fact have 6GB of VRAM it is most likely an overkill to add 16GB system RAM into your machine. This was/is mostly necessary because textures would not fit into VMEM, where as with those monster cards, almost everything remains on the graphics card; and hence the performance those cards can deliver. The bottleneck is the PCIe16 in a PC. And those 1-2GB cards (which I would think are the majority) swap textures quite often into system memory. So a 16GB+6GB is is probably overkill. But, obviously I am just speculating, guessing by the disagrees I will be getting for just saying that.

(*) Well, even though it is more expensive, it might simplify the overall design and thus make the machine cheaper. Especially with the performance target they have in mind.

Sony's conference was solid. The thing people are forgetting is that those games weren't running on a PS4, they were running on a PC with 'comparable specs'.

The problem is 'comparable' is likely a PC that EXCEEDS PS4 specs.

This is what is so dangerous about it all. They could be saying, well it's a 1.8 TFlops GPU, but we think it's going to be better, so we'll throw a 3-5 TFlops GPU in there and run our stuff.

I guess people don't remember what the estimates of the Cell processor was supposed to be, and then what reality was.

That's why people wanted to see the box. To know it was actually PS4 hardware running the stuff. Not a PC with better specs supposedly 'comparable' to a PS4.

Hey I'm buying a PS4 by preordering one when it comes up, but we still don't know if we're being sold another equivalent of a Killzone 2 tech demo, or Final Fantasy VII tech demo, or an Aliens: Colonial Marines demo.

Show us an actual PS4 (even if it's in a clear plastic case) just so we KNOW it will actually do what is shown, which was good, not great.

the developer's already know the spec standard every ps4 will have thus they have to code for such spec's of said Hardware. and since the PS4 is using a AMD X86 SOC somewhat tweaked, the tool chain's are most likely interchangable with the dev environment debugging. So i wonder just how much it would be off by with 8 freaking GB's of VERY FAST RAM! FOR ONE THOSE ARE MOST LIKELY PRE-ALPHA build's thus unlike the PS3 this is not a processor that many developer's have no idea how to tackle, this is an standard but somewhat tweaked x86!

this pretty much allow's the developer's current skill set they have in experience they have had prior to the PS4 because they already work on this type of platform already x86 is already a standard! unlike the Cell was when Sony,IBM, and Toshiba released it back in 2004 when they give out a target render, to know where the system will perform! example:

When Microsoft had the first xbox it was a CPU: 32-bit 733 MHz, custom Intel Pentium III Coppermine-based processor in a Micro-PGA2 package. when they showed off target render's back than it was pretty much what it was. just because Sony maybe using

So this leads me to speculate Microsoft will keep and give (X) hints on 720.
I'm sure the overall shape of the 720 control pad will be a carry-over but most definitely is going to have some sort of new tech device put in to compete with PS4's.

I at first wanted to see the console but once I heard just how awesome the PS4 is going to be I am actually looking forward to waiting till later in the year to see it. After all Sony have a real winner with the PS4 in my opinion, even without showing us the finished console. All the content and information packed into that two hours yesterday is enough to make me want the console even if its exterior looks like a train wreck (Which knowing Sony design I highly doubt it will.) PS3 is awesome and now we have a PS4 officially announced. Sony's decision to make us wait to see it is great and also allows sony to get a final design or make changes if it already has a final design. I just think the major might be slightly jealous ;)wonder how long it is till MS starts slamming Sony just like they did to google. (Oh and this is not fanboyism either I am looking forward to seeing what MS has in the next Xbox) Sort of hoping in a way they at least make online play free.

Microsoft are pissed as hell today. Not because of what Sony showed but because of what they didnt.

If Sony went all in and showed console, games and everything else they showed last night they'd have nothing for E3 and Microsoft would have an opportunity, without any rival announcements to steal the show. Hype would shift in their favour in the months leading up to launch.

Now though Sony have the actual console reveal, price and games from Polyphony, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica to showcase as well. They'll have enough reveals to build the hype and steal some of Microsofts thunder.

This is a garbage article. Microsoft and Major Nelson the entire time talked about how excited they were to see what they were showing, that things looked great, and congratulated them.

Mark my words - Microsoft will look like a friendly competitor as if they aren't really competing and it will only increase brand likeness.

Also to comment on the actual point, they didn't show the hardware for the reveal of the console, that isn't false. That worked out so well for the WiiU right?

I bet they didn't show it because they said when they started the tech demos that it was a prototype. So its prob just all the right guts thrown into a generic box just to make it work. Final design wont come until after the insides are done being designed and tweaked.

I dont know what some ppl are talking about on here. Sony for the last few years have been synonymous with showing actual gameplay footage during their presentations and not mocked up bs. I dont know how many times they showed gameplay of games like Gow3, Uncharted, etccccc and it was exactly how the game ended up looking. The kz game was running on ps4 hardware and was actually live gameplay irregardless if it wansnt a final ps4 build. Consoles are essentially computers so it doest matter what box it was coming from what was shown was representative of what we are going to see that was part of the actual game!!!

Sony guys even commented how things are still being built into the OS of the PS4 and they may just havn't decided on the final design is all. I love Sony and will buy the PS4 but know Sony hypes up things that don't come true. Vita, PS Home features they showed before these came out for example. But seriously, I can think of a few reasons as to why they would hold back on showing the actual console at last night's event. For one, by holding the physical reveal back until E3 they'll be basically guaranteed to make a HUGE splash and attract attention. They could also be holding it back, so as to deny their rivals as much information as possible. And by holding it back they can better maintain a fair level of interest and excitement until E3. You know, make sure no one forgets.
