Current-gen PSN games won't transfer to PS4

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed this earlier today when speaking to Endgadget. While the PS4 will have limited backwards compatibility via the console's cloud-streaming services, it won't transfer your game data and thus you won't be able to transfer your library of PSN games.

... and should make a huge dent in the confidence people have in digital-only purchases... :(

Yet another reason why I might leave Xbox and Playstation and go for a 'Steambox' next gen. At least with Steam you'll be pretty much guaranteed that your games will still be playable 15-20 years from now.

nrvalleytime4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

This does suck quite a bit. It's a different operating system than the PS3, but there has to be some way to make everything work. Hope they solve the issue soon.

Steambox... that's the wild-card.

Ju4074d ago

Yeah, like you can transfer all your PSN games to Steam...hm...

BanBrother4074d ago

@nrvalleytime

If we become vocal about this I'm sure they will reconsider and add it in. Hopefully by launch.

Just remember, we can be vocal, without whining and swearing (not saying you two were, just people in general). I highly doubt this will be true, as PSN is a massive part of the Sony platform, and they surely wouldn't abandon old games.

They will listen, I'm sure. Also, before any Xbox fans come in here, just remember, if Sony do this, you can bet your bottom dollar that MS will implement this as well. Let's be mature about this and let our voices be heard.

JD_Shadow4074d ago

If you read the rest of the article, it's probably not because they don't want to, but because they can't due to the technology of the two systems being so different. It does sound like they want to find a way around the technology differences. We don't know the complete specs of the system yet.

Would love for them to find a way, though. Gaikai could be what they need to make things work.

fr0sty4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

I have the end all be all solution to Sony's issues with backwards compatibility, and Sony has already hinted they are at least considering these things. If you have bought a PSN game, the record is on your account that you own it, so you should be able to stream that game using the cloud to PS4. They already said they are working to make all PS3 games streamable for b/c. If you own disc based games, PS4's blu-ray drive will still read them, so pop the disc in, the drive reads the disc and verifies it's a legit copy of the game, and you can then stream that game free of charge.

Also, with the new Xbox relying on essentially the same processor, don't expect it to have any backwards compatibility either. The difference being, Microsoft didn't buy Gaikai last year.

Don't cry doom yet folks, there's plenty of ways to get around this.

USMC_POLICE4074d ago

Problem solved keep your ps3

blackbeld4074d ago

Yep,

Thats really sucks. But its still to early to say. Maybe they will figure it out someway later.

evilhasitsway4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

dont know what the big deal is ps3 now doesnt play backwards unless you download them from the store just keep your ps3. its a next gen system and i for one dont want it to suffer because people want to play older games on it. i understand wanting to beable keep your libray of games but for real its next gen dont you want the most out of a next gen system and makeing it were you can play older games would only hurt the system power wise.

i mean hell i just bought the crystal white limited edition of the ps3 and believe me im keeping that thing just paid $300 for it it has the 500g hard drive that is almost full already with downloads im just keeping it to still be able to play the games i want you cant make everyone happy. me personaly im completely fine with it because that means more power for next gen games i really want a next gen feel to my games. anyway with what the ps4 is packed with should last at least 15yrs of live if the ps3 could last this long no telling how long the ps4 will last and way in the future when the ps5 comes out it will just be a upgraded version of ps4 so there should be no reason why it wont have backwards compatable with ps4 games.

Darrius Cole4074d ago

@evilhasitsway

Backwards compatibility only matters at the beginning of the life cycle of the new console. When consoles first release there are not enough new games on the new console to cover all the genres. So people have to rely on old games.

nveenio4074d ago

Who cares? The PS4 is not the PS3. Get over it.

SilentNegotiator4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

Yeah, that's why I'm going for Steambox....to play my massive, old library of Linux games.

LOL, dat beats dem consoles any day of da week!

TheRealSpy4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

You can be "vocal" all day, but the only thing sony is going to actually hear is your money. don't support them or don't complain.

insomnium24073d ago

ya I think I was going to hold on to my PS3 anyway so I don't really care.

Imalwaysright4073d ago

"Yeah, like you can transfer all your PSN games to Steam" Honestly that is one of the most stupid replies I ever seen on N4g. The issue here is how these companies behave towards their consumer and imo this is a slap on the face of the people that supported Sony this gen. That comment getting more than 1 agree reflects everything that is wrong with the N4g "community"

DOMination-4073d ago

Why aren't more people livid about this? Your digital stuff should stay purchased. I mean if you have Journey then Sony have that record in your account history. You should at least be able to stream Journey for free on ps4. This is appalling if they make me buy digital stuff again.

And you can bet MS WON'T do this. They understand that Box Live accounts should be uniform across all platforms.

nukeitall4073d ago

@Imalwaysright:

'That comment getting more than 1 agree reflects everything that is wrong with the N4g "community"'

This mirrors the time when Sony introduced "Online Passes" to curb used game sales, there wasn't very much of a peep at all from fans and that basically became the industry standard.

I think it is fine that the technology makes it difficult to transfer over, but at least consumers should have access to it over Gakai if the title is available over the cloud.

GuyThatPlaysGames4074d ago

I tried telling everyone "digital only" versions are NOT the way to go! Nothing like a good hard copy of a game. Plus I'm still keeping my PS3 forever. I have my whole game setup in the living room from NES up to PS3 so it's just another system to add to my collection.

Yi-Long4074d ago

... won't last forever, cause it's disc-based. Sadly.

We all wish our consoles would have eternal lifes, and the NES certainly seems like it comes close, but for the last few generations, it's a given that our consoles will die on us.

Which is why so many of us really want proper backwards compatibility.

jagstatboy4074d ago

@Yi-Long, my sentiments exactly. My reaction to this news about PSN purchases not playable on the PS4? I'll be buying another PS3 before I buy a PS4.

evilhasitsway4074d ago

see i download some games but like i said above just keep your ps3 hell if you sell it or trade it in at gamestop you will only get like $100 maybe $150 if they dont do a price drop.

Lvl_up_gamer4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

See to me, I need BC. I don't want my stand in my TV room crammed with all sorts of hardware. I prefer 1 system that runs my library of games. My TV only has so many inputs for devices.

Luckily I don't have a very big PS3 library so I will be trading in my PS3 and all my games for a PS4 if I choose to get one...which after seeing last nights unveiling most likely will happen so long as last nights unveiling wasn't just another over promising and under delivering conference that Sony is so well known for.

I like the idea of streaming Sony PS1 to PS3 games since I am a huge fan of Jet Moto. Having the PS4 will allow me the great games of the past sony console generations.

I just got unlimited internet so the issues of going over a set limitation is no longer an issue for me. Constant streaming HERE I COME.

Skips4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

^^^

"so long as last nights unveiling wasn't just another over promising and under delivering conference that Sony is so well known for."

You mean Microsoft's conference's right? http://thebitfix.com/wp-con...

Last time I checked, most of Sony's conferences during E3, and Gamescom over the past few years have been very satisfying. Unless you are talking about their reveal of the PS3 which happened like 8 years ago? LMAO @ "ANOTHER" and "Sony is so well known for". XD

SilentNegotiator4073d ago

But it's not even a BC console right?

Then it's about not being able to emulate the cell, not the medium.

cee7734073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

@Yi-Long

it cost under 20$(as low as 12$) to repair ps3 slims with brand new lens off ebay with all parts included tool, lens etc.

A healthy regimen of keeping your ps3 dust free and changing thermal paste every 6+ years ps3 could last as long as you have the know how of maintaining it.

besides ps3 isn't going anywhere soon until ps5 is almost announced lol

TooTall194073d ago

Retail ps3 disks won't work for ps4 either so what's your point? It will be much easier to store your ps3 with the games on your hdd than to also store a bunch of cases.

This would be like updating Steam only to get it with

"Sorry your games is not compatible with this version of Steam. To solve this problem you will have to repurchase all your games over again"

Hate to be the guy who purchase 5-10+ or more games. Hopefully they can transfer your purchase. I swear this feel like the PSV-PSP bc all over again.

I_LOVE_MYSELF4074d ago

Your analogy can be broken to easily for me to take it seriously.

If you update steam then it renders your previous version useless. Upgrading to a ps4 doesn't render your previous playstation useless. You can still play your content on the ps3.

But I do agree it sucks...

UnholyLight4074d ago

Strangely I am not that upset by this news. I am sure it will be the same on Xbox (where all of my purchases went this gen) so I will be a little more upset when I find that out for the Xbox, but, I mean it seems a little crazy that it WOULD in fact all work with the new console.

Highlife4074d ago

Keep your ps3 then you are gauranted to be able to play your games. Problem solved.

jukins4074d ago

for some reason people have a hard time grasping this concept when it comes to the this issue lol. Like you said keep the ps3 and you'll be fine. there's always the chance they actually and "fully" come through on there promise of being able to eventually stream playstation games but until then keep the damn ps3 ppl haha.

Anon19744074d ago

Yeah, I really don't get what the issue is. Sure it would be nice, but let's be realistic here. It's a new system, why should I expect it play games made for another system? I don't expect a Sony Blu-ray player to accept Beta tapes, why would I expect a PS4 to play downloaded content designed for the PS3? If you have PSN content downloaded right now, you have it installed on your PS3. If it's important enough to you, you'll keep your PS3 around.

Yi-Long4074d ago

... it seems you are having a problem realising that your PS3 will one day die on you, and if you can't buy a new PS3 in the store or the PS4 doesn't offer backwards compatibility, you will have lost a complete collection of games.

jagstatboy4074d ago

PS3's won't last forever.

raWfodog4074d ago

Problem solved

"The executive also said that the company aims to offer server-side and cloud services to offer a wider library of older games, but said that's one for the "longer term."

Lets face it guys, how many of you are still holding on to that many games from older systems? An even if you are, how many of those games are you readily popping in to play today? Of course I love nostalgia but Sony is trying to bring us the future and a lot of you are trying to hold onto the past.

MrBeatdown4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

@Yi-Long

"... it seems you are having a problem realising that your PS3 will one day die on you, and if you can't buy a new PS3 in the store or the PS4 doesn't offer backwards compatibility, you will have lost a complete collection of games."

It hasn't happened yet though. PS2s just went out of production a few months ago, and they aren't hard to find. PS1s did years ago, but we can play PS1 games on our PS3s. Nobody's collection has been lost or useless. We have options for every platform's games.

We've never encountered a scenario like what you're suggesting before. There's no reason to assume we will with Sony's track record. Odds are the PS4 can run PS1 and PS2 games. If I remember right, they only mentioned that the PS4 won't run PS3 games natively. I don't see why the PS4 couldn't emulate PS2 games the same way the PS3 did PS1 games.

The problem will likely be limited to PS3 games, only because the systems are so different. But who says we won't be able to play the PS3 on PS5, when the PS3 finally gets phased out? In the meantime, we will have PS3 consoles as an option.

cervantes994073d ago

The only people who complain about this are financially poor. They want a PS4 but plan on trading their PS3 toward it.

I say quit spending all their energy complaining and do something to make themselves more marketable and thus worth more in the matketplace.

They should keep their playstation 3 until they can afford to upgrade.

I know some only want one system in their cabinets, shelves, etc - I get that, but most complaining are probabely financially strapped.

LordHiggens4073d ago

NO!!! I trade in my systems towards new hardware! It's the only way I can afford them. I hate people who say this. Do you have unlimited inputs on your TV? Do you enjoy having numerous clunkers of hardware all around. I enjoy a neat clean gaming space my friend. No BC...cool I got it, cell processor and all that...but my DOWNLOADABLE games that I paid for...no that's bullshit. Sony better fix it.

What are you basing your concerns regarding Xbox on out of curiosity?
There has been no confirmation of details. It seems unjustified to ridicule them for Sony's mistake...

rhcpfan4074d ago

Disagrees, and yet your point is completely valid.

Root4074d ago

Can't you just re download them again from the PSN store ?

OpenGL4074d ago

The PS4 can't run them even if Sony let you re-download them, it's using a completely different architecture. Despite all of the new power of the PS4, it is still not nearly powerful enough to emulate the PS3 hardware.

Nevers4074d ago

^"Despite all of the new power of the PS4, it is still not nearly powerful enough to emulate the PS3 hardware."

Inorite?!?!?!

I can understand having to re-DOWNLOAD the game in a different format for the PS4... but if Sony thinks I'm going to re-PURCHASE the digital content again, then I really have to question whether it's worthwhile investing in a company that wants to charge me full price multiple times for one product.

At this point, I just hope this bit of news is a misunderstanding.

Dno4074d ago

this only matter for the first year or two then it does not. You guys told sony that BC is not what you want when you did not buy the ps3 at launch.

This is good news now this system should be 400 bucks... (better be)

wsoutlaw874074d ago

Of coarse you cant. Why would the BC would be different for psn games than bluray games. The disk isnt the problem, its the very different archetecture. The will have to remake all the games. They could also just put them on gaikai so you could play them.

Darrius Cole4074d ago

The problem is the PS3's price, which is the same problem that the PS3 has had throughout its entire lifecycle.

If the PS3 was $100 like the the PS2 was when the the PS3 released then BC wouldn't be that big of a deal. $100 is cheap enough for most people to buy one on impulse. Even teenager with a job only needed a few weeks of saving and he could just buy a new one. But the PS3 is still $300, seven years later, at $300 buying a PS3 is still a major purchase that has to be considered and weighed against other choices.

By the way we all know that they won't re-make PS3 games to be compatible with the PS4, not even over Gaikai. Even to work on a streaming service the game would still have to be remade. They may do it for a few big ones, but not for the vast majority of games.

wsoutlaw874074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

They already said they would stream previous system games. They dont need to remake games to stream them.

Killzoner994074d ago

"That really REALLY sucks...
... and should make a huge dent in the confidence people have in digital-only purchases... :( "
I swear I can't understand some peoples way of thinking. Oh boo-hoo, I have to buy my games again. How about you get a job or something, it's not Sony's responsibility to give you free games.Every one is always saying how piracy is destroying the industry because people aren't buying games , this is pretty much the same thing. If you like a game you NEED to support the developer and buy it, plain and simple. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and saying you have to buy the games , but if you want one you have to pay. This industry is turning into a bunch of freeloaders.

theDECAY4073d ago

You don't make sense. No one wants to purchase something they already "own" twice.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

"nd should make a huge dent in the confidence people have in digital-only purchases... :( "

It has nothing to do with digital. I still have game on steam from 8 years ago..

In this case sony is the problem.

I know disagree.

JokesOnYou4074d ago

The power of the cell! I remember many used to defend sonys choice for the cell and ps3's complex architecture, also in the early days of the ps3 BC, was all important, now many say just use your ps3, OK. Also sounds like deja vu/cross game chat in regards to sony making ps3 games compatible through cloud/streaming, guess anything is possible if its a focus in early plans.

On the whole it seems sony is headed in the right direction making this platform less of an enigma architechturely, liked the event, the games didnt wow me, but again its early and Im sure E3 is going to show some innovative games/ tech.

TheTwelve4074d ago

Ohhh,c'mon bro. This is hardly true.

FamilyGuy4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

theyre built for ps3 architecture so this is probably true.

Gaikai streaming is one possible solution

For now, just keep your ps3 to play your ps3 and psn games.

HITANDRUN4074d ago

Lol, well some people said that they dont care for backwards play lol... The only problem I have its my freaking trophies which I dont care for. A lot of people will be furious to loose their scores, to me I only care with playing the games, so no big deal.

Amplitude4073d ago

Why couldn't they just Gaikai the PSN games as well?

...Im almost 100% sure that's whats gonna happen, if downloading really isn't an option. I mean we have the proof of purchase on our accounts since we purchased the games from the Playstation Store. There's no reason why we'd have to re-buy them honestly lol.

theDECAY4073d ago

I think the issue is they would have to remake them to run on "not cell" architecture, which means a whole lot of work. It isn't as simple as re-downloading.

Amplitude4073d ago

@theDECAY

It wouldnt need the cell to stream it with Gaikai lol
You wouldn't even need to download it.

Similar to how i can play Sleeping Dogs on ultra settings on my phone with OnLive.

yeahokchief4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

It does suck.

I like Axecution's suggestion. Our games should be tied to our accounts allowing us to play them via the PS4 streaming if we have already purchased them. Otherwise Sony is at a disadvantage compared to Valve because every gen you lose your library....

Then again I purchased all the games like ICO/SotC, God of Wars, GTAs, DMCs, MGSs back on the PS2 and didn't get free versions when they were re-released on the PS3 so if they do new versions with updated graphics then i see no harm in having to repurchase those. I myself do not repurchase games i already own on older consoles tho.

My suggestion to fellow PS3 gamers: Buy an external harddrive and backup all of your data. I bought both a 1TB external and a 1TB internal for $70 each last Black Friday. Transferring everything over was a breeze.

Luckily only 11/62 of the games i've purchased were over PSN.

Although I would also be missing a ton of DLC.

Yeah i'm not too happy that you don't get to keep your PS3 content.

They better at least transfer over our trophy accounts.

This is exactly why I purchase my stuff on disc. All this digital download crap only benefits their bottomline. It doesn't make stuff easier for us and once they shut down the old system, you lose it all. I like to go back and replay my older games.

Amplitude4073d ago

@yeahokchief:

Except, if they go the Gaikai route, then your Discs would be useless and your dowloads would still work :p

...so technically, downloads could a lot actually be better in this case.

If i could download all my PS2 games on my PS3 i'd be so happy xD

4073d ago
2pacalypsenow4073d ago

you can still play them on a ps3 so how would they not be playable 10-15 years too?

Megaton4073d ago

This is a huge negative if true. All of the digital stuff should carry over, even if it means simply granting licenses for all digital purchases through GaiKai.

Nitrowolf24074d ago

Hmm I really hope they don't make us rebuy those titles on PSN. This is just one of the many reasons why I hate digital content.

We'll most likely be able to stream them, but Sony better transfer those purchases rather than make us rebuy them.

Wizziokid4074d ago

There's only one game I can think of when I read that title and that's The Walking Dead, how will season 2 know my actions from season 1?

Rainstorm814073d ago

It'll release on PS3 360 and IoS only and if its on Next gen we may have a situation like Mass Effect 2 on PS3

Chaostar4074d ago

Hopefully your PSN account will still recognise what purchases you have made and make them available over Gaikai.

stage884074d ago

I'm hoping for this. I guess we all are.

clrlite4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

Maybe they are just trolling everyone again and the games will be available via "Gaikai" or maybe download eventually. You're probably right.

--Onilink--4074d ago

wtf?? that doesnt make any sense... even on the wiiU with a completely different online system(and a limited one at that) i could transfer my wii downloads.

Highlife4074d ago

different architecture games were made to run on the cell. PS4 No cell. Nothing to do with online system.

--Onilink--4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

im pretty sure that the architecture for the wii games is also incredibly different from the WiiU, thats why they have the Wii Mode, its basically an emulator of your Wii "account". I dont see how sony could not do this, and probably more elegantly than Nintendo

Prophet-Gamer4073d ago

@Onilink

You do realize the Wii is immensely weaker than the PS3/360 right? I mean, there are already some somewhat working emulators for the Wii on PC but emulating the PS3/360 is years away. It's not as easy as you think especially when it comes to the PS3's radically different architecture. The Wii U basically has a Wii built into it which is what allows it to run Wii games.

Amplitude4073d ago

@prophet-Gamer

haha i totally agree with you just thought i'd share this anyway >.>

"Got that one right, Shu!"

Kind of ironic when Sony is focused on GaaS like never before.

Flakegriffin354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Companies evolve overtime. Sony has implemented themselves in the single player space relatively well. Now they can expand further by doing more all while still giving us single player experiences. Obviously Shu is speaking on GaaS games being the main dominance of the gaming space and if that’s the future then that indeed sucks.

You can have that mindset all while still creating some GaaS titles.

InUrFoxHole354d ago

They have 10 in the works right now.

Crows90354d ago

Absolutely! Man all the freaking gaas games theyve been releasing...wait. Not a single one.

sinspirit354d ago

Did you read? It says "dominated". That word means something.

RedDevils354d ago

They don't want to be Blockbuster, too stubborn to adapt with time.

tagzskie354d ago

kinda ironic when it comes to xbox you xboys can even defeat einstein in explation why its good, when it comes to ps you guys became dumb and dumber..

FinalFantasyFanatic354d ago

How so? They're only after one or two good GaaS games, they're throwing crap at the wall until something sticks, alot of those games in development are going to languish and die shortly after release. They're still predominately focused on their core strategy of great single player games (look at the previous interview where they admit they cancel alot of games).

Bathyj354d ago

God why do Xbox gamers always love the thought of PlayStation being as crappy as Xbox.?

DarXyde354d ago

"Like never before" regarding GaaS is like saying "PS3 is a console that launched with HDD space like never before": it's a very low bar to clear because there isn't much precedent.

I happen to agree with Shu here. I don't think being a GaaS title is a scarlet letter, but I can't think of any live service games that have been great at launch either. Naughty Dog is looking likely break that trend. I'd say two love service titles at a time is the sweet spot. I suspect people can only deal with a limited number of live service games contemporaneously.

TheCaptainKuchiki354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

Lmaooo
People always criticize Sony because 90% of their exclusives are single player games. People say they are too expensive because of low replay value.
And you wanna pretend like Sony is focusing on Gaas? Their biggest games aren't Gaas unlike MICROSOFT.

ModsDoBetter354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

How are Sony focused on GaaS?

They own Bungie and have Destiny but the majority of their titles are far from GaaS.

Why, if you are such a die hard Xbot, do you rush to comment on Sony related articles?

1Victor354d ago

Are you ok now we was worried about your mental health state when you disappeared for almost a week from bashing PlayStation articles.

I haven’t read the article as my spam blocker always red flags that site and I don’t t want to risk it so a general comment it is 🤦🏿
We all know live services game and quality rarely goes together but some of them are fun to play

derek354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

@Obscure, Sony is starting from a place of zero which requires a big initial investment to establish themselves in the live services market.

Vengeance1138354d ago

It's very much the opposite, Shu said this damn well knowing Sony is going hard on GaaS. This is Shu confirming that Single player games won't be effected at all despite them going into Live service.

Extermin8or3_353d ago

Except they aren't really- they have what may be a live service game from Haven studios and firewalk studios, they have another from a second party dev and an fps game with multiplayer focus by deviation games, they counted Gt7 as a live service game but really it's not much different to how recent GT titles were treated, they have the last of us factions, a Horizon multiplayer game in production at guerilla alongside horizon 3, a new ip from Bungie. The rest of their studios seem to be hard at work on traditional singleplayer games that may also have a multiplayer mode or may not. So their live service titles are mostly in development from either new teams setup at existing studios or from acquisitions they have made which really just replace the capabilities they once had through Sony Online Entertainment until they sold it half a decade ago. Only I'd argue their new capabilities in this space would appear to be better and have higher quality talent than it did back then.

He never said they were not working on any. He said, he doesn't want to see Gaming's Future dominated by live-Service Games. Sony currently has 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games and that is honestly a very good balance

neutralgamer1992354d ago

I agree I just hope their live service games are not simple money grabs and try to do some good interesting things

The issue is, whether people want to admit it or not because it's Sony, but once a company gets a taste of that money GaaS games make the chances of them going money crazy becomes super higher

I know what you'll probably say

"bu bu but Sony wouldn't do that"

NO COMPANY is immune, even the best can fall and I really don't want to see that happen here.

The fact people will completely blow that off and pretend it's not even a possibility is worrying to me because that's how we end up shits creek.

They might be fine...they might go too far but at the moment I don't think it's a bad thing at all to be sceptical with the shit this industry has gone through in the past 10 years alone.

FinalFantasyFanatic354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

The thing is most of those 10 games won't even be viable, out of the 10 that actually get released, probably only 1 or 2 will make the big bucks worth continuing support. I think Sony even knows that, look at all the other GaaS games that release and die shortly after. Personally I'm okay with that because I don't want the market dominated with these games.

I'd actually rather the resources go on to making some more top-tier JRPGs, I feel like we don't get enough of those in the last couple of gens.

Final Fantasy

But keep in mind when those games fail many of the studios are shut and there are layoffs

NotoriousWhiz354d ago

I don't want a Gaas game. I just want a new socom. A strong multi-player title with no purchases beyond the initial purchase.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking

Not 1

Not a cheeky 2

But freaking 5

Like it’s not even a “we’ll try doing one and see how it goes”

__SteakDeck__354d ago

@-Foxtrot What do you have against live service games. I’m not a fan of live service games, but multiplayer games can be done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it. As long as PS’s core studios keep making single player games, everything should be fine.

Redemption-64354d ago

Sony said they have 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games. They have more single player games in development

@__SteakDeck__

Urm....that they are a cancer in this industry

That the majority of them fail and the developers have then wasted years on them rather than other things.

They turn developers and publishers into thirsty little money grabbers where that big money is still not enough for them.

I could go on, defending GaaS games is not a hill to die on man, it's really not

"done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it"

Titanfall 2 was not really a GaaS type of game compared to what we are getting now so that's a really bad example.

__SteakDeck__354d ago

@-Foxtrot Yeah it seems like you just have a hatred for multiplayer games. I’m not the biggest fan of multiplayer games, but like I said they can be done well. Also Titanfall 1 had no single player it was multiplayer only and it’s now a dead game, but it was still good. So yes that is a good example.

FinalFantasyFanatic354d ago

@_SteakDeck_,
I'm still salty about Titanfall 2, it was one of the only multi-player games I actually liked.

NotoriousWhiz354d ago

Multi-player games don't have to be Gaas games. Look at Mario Kart, Splatoon. Nintendo's games most likely don't have Gaas because they're behind the times, but this is one area where it's better to be behind the times.

And? They still have single player games. Domination would completely ruled with live services which Sony should know to still do single player. On a side note they should also do a few 1st party smaller games like indie or AA. By the way is indie a single A game.

Philaroni354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

To be fair, so has many other companies aka Ubisoft for example and many of them they decided to end development on. Just because something is in the works does not mean it will release if they do not feel it will pan out. ATM all of the GaaS we know of from Sony are The Last of Us Factions, and some kind of Horizon (Monster Hunter like) game. Also keep in mind, they do own Bungie, and Destiny and there new project be it Destiny 3 and there new IP will likely be that. So just that on its own is near half of what we can best assume.

Main issue with GaaS now days is that its very over saturated. Keep in mind as well Battel Royal games are GaaS by nature also, hell CoD is GaaS. Halo Infinity, ditto. Really now days unless something is an honest to god single player game only the GaaS term gets over used.

Not sure if many played it (I loved it) Gun's Up was a GaaS for a long while, it was going to shut down till some youtubers gave it a bit of new life for another half of year. We know Sony Mobile is working on things and it not shock me if some of this stuff is targeted to the mobile market.

Right now Sony's biggest weakness I'd say is MP games. With that Firewalk studio from lots of vets they just acquired its quite likely there game will have GaaS stuff as part of it, that is still years down the line. I think everyone needs to chill out some and just wait and see what comes. We have not really got a real honest GaaS from Sony before this or even last gen really... At least as we know them now days. Such a broad term now.
