Sony Played it Safe Tonight with the PS4, and Hit a Homerun

While many clamored for tonight’s unveiling of the PlayStation 4 console and seeing what the future of gaming would bring, some will be left a bit confused about the conference held by Sony tonight in NYC. Sony didn’t decide to show off the PlayStation 4 as a console itself, instead they decided to talk about the future of the gaming market and what the console could do. It seems as though that most of the information that went into tonight’s live event may have already been leaked in some capacity or another, Sony confirmed the news that was known across the web but kept a few curveballs up their sleeve. To me the best part of the show was seeing the games, but equally as important and impressive was the specs release and the networking features of the PS4. I was highly impressed by the overall show, but a lot of unanswered questions (which was expected), and some games still MIA.

Price, FIRM Launch date, confirmed launch titles, Where was EA since they have the best 3rd relationship with Sony (Battlefield 4?), Square Enix could have stayed home with that awful spot, PS Eye HD details, PS+ new pricing structure, and missing games like The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 13 versus, Final Fantasy 14, Agent, 8 Days revived, The Getaway revived, and if GTA5 is coming to PS4.

But I know all that's for E3 and Beyond.

You know after watching the conference again one thing I noticed is we didn't see a lot of new IP's. I am guessing they are saving all that for E3.

I thought having activision,blizzard and Bungie at the conference was a huge deal.

What I am surprised by is that a lot of us didn't expect the specs to be as good as they are, ps4 at launch will be able to compete with a medium pc. Like ps3 I can't wait to see what studios figure out in next 3-5 years to really show the strength of ps4

We've seen a PC running multiplatform games that are coming to a PS4, with a couple of exclusives, like Kill Zone that looked the poorest, and Capcom's Deep Down that was probably CGI.

Thus what have we really seen?

The offender? A PC was used to showcase the supposedly PS4 demos.

Nintendo has been confirmed to only be 1/3rd roughly as powerful as a PS4, and only 1/2 that of a 720. If anything Nintendo breathed a big sigh of relief.

M$? Who knows. They're too busy calling the police to raid people's houses that released their specs.

Sony's gameplan:
1.)Show it's powerful
2.)Demonstrate 3D party commitment
3.)Integrate Gaikai as an intergal feature

No they showed us what a PC can do.

No they said those are the devs committed to supporting the PS4 (what they didn't say was...by what timeframe).

Gaikai (thankfully) wasn't as big as it was rumored. Game streaming service like OnLive would have been a huge mistake. Instead, at least for now, they're playing it right and utilizing Gaikai as a pro and not unleashing the beast that is simply all cons.

So simple, other than the ram number, stuff we already knew, and what we saw, wasn't a PS4 so nothing visually was real. Thus for people wanting to see something REAL, we didn't see much.

Still a day one purchase for me, but c'mon guys, we didn't learn much of anything except 8 instead of 4 GB's, Diablo III coming to PS4, playing games while the download completes, and the ram was GDDR5 instead of DDR3. Basically everything else was just confirming rumors we already suspected because it was leaked.

People got what they wanted. They got confirmation the PS4 is cutting edge in current tech, they've sealed extensive third party commitment, and they have stuff to look forward to Day 1.

For me I'm just glad the PS4 is out there, tired of speculation and whatnot. Now it's time to see what MS has to show and if Nintendo has anything up their sleeves. Imo they did what they needed to in a just a few short hours.

A 360 and PS3 could outperform a 3000-4000 PC (or 2500 in core PC parts to build yourself) from a 2004 PC (the year before the 360 launched).

A PS4 is comparable to a $600-800 in core 2011 PC parts. (motherboard, ram, psu, CPU, GPU).

You make the determination whether or not that is a big leap compared to last time and whether or not that is a step back or three from the starting point of the last new console generation.

PS...what we saw was running on PC not PS4 hardware.

agreed but like i said we cant preorder the system until a price is there unless they actually ship enough systems at launch it may not be a problem i want this thing on launch not a month after it is out like they had issues with ps3 and xbox. nintendo did pretty good about sending out enough wiiu's so hopefully this wont be a issue at launch as i said i want the system and buy every launch title as well im going big cause i havent been able to do that for any other system i already got $1000 put back just to at least cover the system but hopefully it will cost like $500 and have plenty to get games/headset and stuff cause they never said anything about ps3 controller working on it or head sets and with the new controller having a headphone jack i dont think the ps3 headsets will work with.

Sony could not have done a better job with this. Theyve managed to neutralize whatever megaton announcement ms has up their sleeve for e3 by outing the ps4 first. the next xbox WILL be at this years e3, but microsoft wont be ready to give much more than a taste of what is to come, much like the way sony was today. so while theyre talking about all the great things to come with the next xbox in not too much detail, sony will already be knee-deep in details like price and full fledged features. as exciting as the new xbox announcement will be for e3, all it really does is put ms on the same page as sony.
all in all i think MS will have a more "explosive" e3, ONLY because they thats where theyre going to announce their new xbox- BUT at the end of the day sony will have a much BETTER e3 overall because theyll be giving away details aboutt their console that ms hasnt quite figured out yet with their new addition.

Also, ANY announcement on ps3 and vita pricedrops will lay waste to anything anyone else has to offer.

They had an extremely good conference and i was extremely impressed with almost all the game demos. One of my favorites was Deep Down which reminds me of Skyrim but it looks so much better.

Im a PC gamer and always will be but im also an avid console gamer. One thing has always stood between us and thats the graphics.

That early this morning was put to one side. I saw games there i can't even equal atm on the PC. One thing we sorely lack atm is exculsives. Its never been a big problem being we have a massive mod comminity that makes are games lifes last that bit longer.

I play on a high end rig I can throw most anything at it but atm you know my three game i show off BF3, Dayz and the Crysis 3 beta :/.

Being a competive gamer i know the best way even though i can run most games on there highest settings is to turn and scale those games down for higher frames.

Now get this these games don't come with in a hairs inch of what i watched from the games i saw tonight on PS4 and yet though some the games "i mentioned" where built with PC first in mind they have are will make there way to console in the end.

Where has the day gone when PC had its own games that where massive. Im not on the PC is dying bandwagon dont get me wrong.

But i actually think the new generation off console games will give the PC a boost and finally let us see what are graphics are capable off for the last generation was seriously holding us back .

What tonight showed was the devs have had there hands under there asses for far to long. I'll be adding a PS4 to my collection in a Heartbeat but at the same time hoping it makes a massive impact on PC aswell.

Im sick off this current generation and the ripple effect its caused on PC.

PROS:

The 8GB (if still GDDR5) was a great move
KZ4 looked awesome.
Controller looks better/comfy

Other than that the presentation was a bit underwhelming.

The Square enix segment was laughable

Watchdogs was running from PC (as were probably most if not all of the stuff, or pre-rendered mock ups)

The Media Molecule stuff looked embarrassing and fun for about 3 minutes (if you are six)

And the total lack of any real tangible description of the PS4 as a full system, starting without a whimper (just coming out and saying 'on ps4') and ending on a sudden downer (what no actual console shown?) made this presentation not worth the hype it got the past weeks. They had to start somewhere so well done on that but really this was a non event, a load of fluff and what ifs and 'we hope to', the ONLY real tangible stuff there was all the negatives imo (the social stuff and that 'pre downloading' of possible games I may like? WTF? get off my bandwidth the rest of the family are trying to use it on PC!! cheeky sods)

Anyone with half a brain will be turning OFF suggested pre loading and social integration (except the teens who like to show off about every last move they make).

The only positive I saw from much of that was the instant stream of demos - that IS a good thing.

The social stuff made me cringe, talk about BIG BROTHER! if they make it mandatory that you HAVE to sign on with FBOOK 'real name' they can fuck off. I don't want everybody knowing I spent 8 hours through the night playing a game I'm addicted too? none of their business. I can currently selectively share my username with gaming friends if I like and keep the rest private. This is more about spreading word of the games (it is NOT social enhancement is is FREE advertising for games just like on FBook casual crap).. this social aspect, partly, is about monetisation and to team up with Facebook makes that more than obvious knowing how those evil bastards work!

I imagine PS4 will somehow utilise Facebook's massive database on users to target ads and usage pattern uploads - not to create more fun for the player but more revenue for the developers and Sony. Sucks, seriously.

I think I wasted time watching it when I could have been sleeping and read the recaps this morning as there were absolutely NO 'wow' moments there.

I'm not bashing PS4 as I hope to get one if it's not download games only, not pay to play online, can resell games...

E3 will tell us more thankfully but right now they've gone and half killed their own hyped.. more like an own goal than a home-run imo.

Yes I'll be disagreed with for voicing an opinion but I have high hopes for PS4 so long as they focus on CORE games that SINGLE PLAYERS can enjoy too and stop trying to play catch up with an entirely different market.

Honestly it was a really good show. I was expecting it to be half an hour but it lasted for 2 hours! InFamous Second Son surprised the shit out of me! Sucker Punch did a good job on keeping that a secret. Plus Killzone Shadow Fall looked like a next gen game it was so epic and I like the art style of the game, much more colorful. They also had some smaller but look looking titles like Knack and the Witness. Also that DriveClub game looked really good, I just hope that it was in game footage.
