Why Didn’t We See The Actual PlayStation 4 Tonight? Sony’s Boss Explains.

"Well, that was weird. We got a console reveal without Sony actually revealing the console. It's left a lot of people confused, maybe even concerned, so given the chance we had to ask: where was the PS4?"

majiebeast4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

"Why do you care?"

Yeah we got specs and everything the box it comes in for me, is alot less important.

I_am_Batman4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

It would be just great to know how the thing looks. But I agree that it's not too important for now. We'll see it soon anyway.

Army_of_Darkness4072d ago

After tonight's show, I can't imagine how amazingly insane it's gonna be when E3 comes!
We still have not seen what naughty dog and santa monica has in store for the PS4 yet;-)

TruthbeTold4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

Well one reason I'd say for why 'the box it comes in' not being shown yet being important is that Sony probably hasn't finalized how they are going to keep the hardware cool enough (temperature-wise) yet.

starchild4072d ago

E3 is right around the corner. I'm surprised anybody would be upset about not seeing the physical hardware at this point.

otherZinc4072d ago

Did they say the PS4 was releasing this year?

MRMagoo1234072d ago

@otherzinc

yes December 2013

DragonKnight4072d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

"Why do you care?"

When I saw that, I read it like "why do YOU care Kotaku?" It was a great reply for Yoshida to make considering the problems Sony have had with Kotaku in the Past. Kotaku are lucky Sony even bother to talk with them at all.

Why are people so concerned about the casing of the PS4? It has no bearing on the performance, it's all just aesthetics. What, do people think the PS4 doesn't exist? Sony will show it soon enough, just be happy about what it can do instead of what it looks like.

@Mr.Magoo: False. Holiday 2013 doesn't mean December.

sikbeta4071d ago

I know you people will accept anything coming from Sony, but it could have been great to see the PS4 form factor in the conference, eveyone was expecting that...

DragonKnight4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

sikbeta

UnholyLight4071d ago

ACTUALLY, @DragonKnight Form factor DOES potentially impact console performance.

Ex/ Xbox 360 lol. Apparently the designer compromised the original Xbox by trying to make that )( curved inward design or something and that was partially the problem with the RROD in the original 360. That and placement of the CPU or something, not 100% sure but yeah..

Im not too worried though, I'm sure they just don't want to reveal absolutely everything in one go so that they still can blow people away at E3. It keeps the hype going for their console right?

Coming from an Xbox guy this gen, I am insanely excited for the PS4 after what I have been shown. Sony and Gaikai have some great things in the works going forward, and the improved controller looks great. I wouldn't count Microsoft out just yet though, I'm sure they will have had some things up their sleeve as well. Well, at this point I am going into the next gen with an open mind, likely will be buying both PS4 and Xbox, as for the Wii U...They better figure stuff out because if PS4 is any indication, the future of gaming is going to be one step ahead of Nintendo again..Microsoft will too.

I'd like to know what type/speed BR drive its going to have. The number of HDMI and USB ports. Should have one USB in the back for the camera.

Would also like to know how does that damn camera fit in in. Is it going to be like the next Xbox's and be required.

Rainstorm814072d ago

I would think the new PS eye is packed in with every console.....it only makes sense since they showed it before the system and they showed a lot of video inter connectivity

NateCole4072d ago

You can get most of those form the specs list.

Baka-akaB4072d ago

Gave somes of the specs

Optical Drive

BD 6xCAV
DVD 8xCAV
I/O
Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0) 、AUX

Root4072d ago

Well I don't think you'll have to connect the camera.

There was nothing on the controller which made it so you HAD to connect it. I don't know if the lightbar is required to sync with it but it didn't seem that way.

I thought they just added it for video chat and if you wanted to use Move in your games.

gtr_loh4072d ago

An AUX output.. FINALLY. I would also believe it would be included with the console. I'd imagine that the PS4 come with the DS4 + the new PS eye cam sort of like how the Wii U came with the fancy controller and the console itself. Would be quite pointless if they gave us the DS4 but not the PS eye that accompanies it.

I have the specs thats the most important thing. I will reserve and purchase 2 for launch day.

Besides, it's nice to see a company not afraid to put their specs out there because they know they have a next generation machine. Other companies would rather show you the plastic case and force you to get a microsocope to discover whats under the hood.

mandf4072d ago

Right on man, I agree. Specs mean more than a plastic case.

scofios4072d ago

20/02/2013 the day the Ps3 got beaten .

i couldn't have said that better thanks 4saying it for me lol anyway thats very true better to have specs that a piece of plastic to look at

Anon19744072d ago

Another quality piece by kotaku. Where would we be without your insightful reporting?

torchic4072d ago

be happy, on a differnet day Kotaku would have taken the "why do you care" quote and taken it completely out of context, making the guy look bad.

Clover9044072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

disagrees? Imagine if the did the reverse, showing the console and not giving details. well said magiebeast, bubbles for you.

Looking forward to seeing the console at a later date. Sony knocked it out of the park tonight and left something to look forward to. Very well done!

dcbronco4072d ago

Could it be a problem with the....saving something for E3 thingy.

Enemy4072d ago

Specs are more important than what's on the outside. How it looks doesn't concern me.

^^^ how fast are these cpu's? What do they compare to? An AMD a8 fusion?

What's a "next generation" radeon 1.84Tflops GPU? A hd 7850?

These are vague descriptions, not specs

Ju4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

1.84TFlops is a performance number ("About 2TF" was said at the meeting). What does it matter what frequency is used to reach that? So people can actually say 3 years @ 3GHz match todays 800MHz? Doesn't change the fact that this is how much compute power you have. And it's quite plenty.

TripC504072d ago

Hope its not too expensive

Syntax-Error4071d ago (Edited 4071d ago )

Rumor has it around $429 for one sku and $529 for another. E3 will have both SONY and MS displaying their new consoles with prices. Should be good this year

PS-Diablo III....seriously(who cares)

user39158004072d ago

Like I said typical sony lies, PS4 reveal, where the f@ is the ps4? Same old worthless remote jeez and the trolls are sucking on bananas over this dissapointment, Really wtf was this bs.

kayoss4072d ago

Maybe if you carefully read what Sony said then you wouldn't come off as a dumbass. Sony never once said they will reveal the console. Its was the journalist of different site that said that with all their articles. Sony only say they are having a meeting in 2/20/2013 to announce the future of the playstation. That's what they did. They announced the ps4 and reveal software support and spec for it. You hatred for Sony is evident... Go crawl under the bridge that you came out of troll.

Now I can't wait to here about the Durango and when Microsoft will make their moves. It seem that Sony and Microsoft console are much stronger then current gen, how will the wii u fair against these two down the line?

nosferatuzodd4072d ago

wow xbox guy calm down we know xbots a sour grapes when it come to other systems but damn you take the cake for troll of the year

DragonKnight4071d ago

@nlvwithgms: Every time you post your fanboy hate the only thing I can think of is this.

aceitman4072d ago

I rather hear about the specs , then see the console. e3 will be the place.

whamlollypop74071d ago

There's a difference between whats on paper and whats in the machine. With a reveal that massive it's foolish not to show the actual hardware. I thought yesterday was not that impressive once E3 rolls around and we get actual live game play then we will know what we have. Tech demos are great but they always are.

smashcrashbash4071d ago

PlayStation fans sure get confused easily. While any other system owner would conclude that it is still too early and they just weren't ready to show the physical console yet instead PlayStation people get confused. Can't people just use a little common sense?

ajax174071d ago

People just don't seem to get the concept that E3 is just a few months away! And they call themselves game journalists. Pfft..

llMurcielagoll4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

Actually that is true, I mean it is nice to finally see the box. But if it is not the time for it then so be it. We will most likely either see it in E3 at most or Sony will put pics or videos of it online sometime before E3 at the least

PopRocks3594072d ago

Would have been nice to see the actual console, but it's a minute thing to expect. More than likely it will be shown at E3.

CommonSenseGamer4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

I was expecting to see it. A hell of a lot more than I wanted to see Blizzard come out and talk about the over hyped Diablo III. And where are the full specs in terms of HDD capacity, if its upgradable, etc. I really wanted to see the unit and its odd they didn't show it. Have they ever done a console reveal in the past without the console?

Scenarist4072d ago

i almost closed my live feed when blizzard mentioned Diablo 3 for ps4....

llMurcielagoll4070d ago

Well I didn't feel Id close the live feed but my face at first Blizz is here?! :O NEW GAME ON PS4 FROM BLIZZARD?! DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!

Then as soon as the first second of the Diablo 3 theme played my face instantly went to >__< I already own Diablo 3 on PC played it, beaten it. Not going to buy it again Next gen or not.

Outside_ofthe_Box4072d ago (Edited 4072d ago )

***"but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."***

There is your answer.

They are saving stuff for E3 why is it hard for people to understand that?

They didn't even talk about stuff like next gen PS Plus or even demo the new Eye. There is a plenty of stuff they didn't show besides the console itself.

Sevir4071d ago

Versus knowing the console had game support, software and better functionality and features along with what its capable of. I mean really you'd think after the PS3 and Sony showing New revisions every year with upgradeable HDDs that it would be assumed that the next PS console would come with one, you got final specs, you got some of the key features, a controller showing off some new features and you got software and a Live Game Demonstration showing of what the specs are capable of (Mighty impressive for a launch title and comparable to the some of the best offering on high end pc's now) and you complain about not seeing the plastic box.

I guess you'd be satisfied with the minty approach, show a plastic box, don't list specs and show rival console gameplay footage and say that its running on your non final hardware which isn't even on the show floor then show the controller at another trade show. Only to have the product release and have people crawl through nails to find out what the system is capable of. Yep Sony or MS should do that.

CommonSenseGamer4071d ago

I saw the games as I expected. Why in hell would you assume that I don't care about the games or support?

I also expected to see the console. What's wrong with that?

Most the people on this site seem to just attack a comment rather than debate or discuss it.

N4g_null4071d ago

What if the case is actually a pc case? This is amd, so we need heat pipes and huge fans. Or will they just let it over heat? I'm expecting Xbox Durango dev kit size. I think ms brought this up because they know it is a problem.

Really good specs though really easy to beat if price isn't a problem along with case sizes. An i5 with a 680 or 690 would do the job. Easily but what I'm curious about is the apu design. Would love to see that amd road map.

What is cool is amd is about to make a huge come back now!

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6411d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long11d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197211d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 11d ago
DivineHand12511d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91311d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91310d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit10d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 10d ago
Christopher11d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6910d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit10d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher11d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken11d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2311d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218311d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder11d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
