A Look Back at Sony’s Overblown PlayStation 3 Promises

Andrew Groen: ''On Wednesday evening, Sony will present a glamorous press briefing in New York City that is almost certain to be the debut of its next PlayStation home console.

New console announcements, by their nature, are full of promises. Some of them are relatively small things, and some sound impossibly grandiose. And veteran game industry followers know that it’s important to take each one of them with a grain of salt. In an effort to generate buzz for their new machine, companies will often resort to half-truths and outright lies to get consumers excited.

As we get ready for Sony’s big announcement, let’s take a look back at the promises it made in 2005 and 2006 prior to the launch of PlayStation 3, to find out how well they’ve held up over the ensuing eight years.''

Gazondaily4076d ago

Totally agree with most of the article but the BIGGEST issue for me was the CGI they passed off as gameplay.

Killzone, Motorstorm and Eight Days with the UI slapped on it like the article says; it was an all out lie. People argue and say "oh but Killzone looks quite similar to what was shown" but that isn't the point. To be honest, I thought it was a bit insulting really.

But that's my biggest concern with the PS4 reveal; they misrepresent what the console is capable of. They have constantly done it in the past and I hope they don't do it now.

But the funny thing is, they don't need to! Just show us what the PS4 is capapble of doing by showing actual gameplay. I'm sure we will be impressed nonetheless.

mandf4076d ago

Killzone looked and played better than that teaser trailer any one saying different didn't play the game or is just hating.

Highlife4076d ago

I agree killzone 2 is my favorite fps. The only thing I was disapointed in was the loss of a 2nd HDMI port. Thought that could have been fun for local coop games. Or some crazy dual display stuff.

mandf4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Tell why and how it didn't look better?

Not you Highlife

Typical n4g disagree without stating any facts in a discussion. Explain to me how the game looked worse than the trailer. Any takers instead of just disagreeing.

@ septic bubbles up for just responding even if I disagree. I think the lighting and the animations are miles ahead then what what was in the teaser trailer. A lot of developers show trailers for levels that are not even in the release game. I had a problem with the media using Killzone to bash Sony and then when the game released looking better it was a lie. How can a game look better but it's lie? The action in that trailer was never in the final build but the final build looked better. The media just didn't want to apologize and look like a fanboy. I don't know how to link stuff but digital foundary said it looked better and even apologized in their odd little way.

....seriously? I have to tell you why and how it didn't look better?

Just watch the two videos side by side. I'm sorry, but no game this gen has pulled off that kind of fidelity (re:CGI trailer). The smoothness, textures etc...I don't have to break it down mate. Its obvious at a cursory glance.

Even if we say, for argument's sake, that it is better. Why couldn't Sony just come out and say that what was shown was just a representation? Why lie like Jack Tretton did?

Its bad enough that you're using CGI to launch your console but its even worse to mislead gamers into thinking that was in-game. I'm sorry but that is in total bad faith. MS did the same with Natal and Milo but at least they didn't launch their console with that kind of lie.

"Typical n4g disagree without stating any facts in a discussion. Explain to me how the game looked worse than the trailer. Any takers instead of just disagreeing. "

Mate, I'm at work and it took my 8 minutes to reply. Relax. (Yes I know...I'm hardly getting any work done. I blame the PS4 announcement build up!).

The silly thing about it is , Sony was the main company pushing "actual in game footage" on games trailers majority of this gen while most other companies represent their games in CG trailers.

The thing is Killzone & Motorstorm are probably two of the graphical leaders in their respective genres, not to mention Uncharted....I'd say they delivered on the graphics side of things more than not

grailly4076d ago

I dunno, it's hard to say if the CGI looked better or not. I just think that no FPS ever will look as realistic as the CGI just because of the animation of the camera, which really made it immersive, but you can't put that in a game as it would make it unplayable.

other than that, in terms of pure video fidelity, I don't know which is better, I'm not much of a graphics whore. I do think, though, that KZ2 and 3 did end up looking prettier, but I think it's just because I prefer the grey palette to the brown one.

Temporary4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

When people defend the Xbox launch, it makes me cry a little inside. People can be so blind (or ignorant/naive) ...

They had the worst launch EVER for just about ANY electronic device! If consumers were educated enough there wouldve been a mass recall and they wouldve been forced to re-launch.

Instead, they waited years before extending their warranties and lost billions in the process.

You can compare any console launch to that of the 360's, the RROD and E37 errors were no joke, and its ridiculous that fanboys still defend microsoft to this day.

Gazondaily4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

@theBawse

"no ms launched the 360 without hdmi, wifi, pay to play online an OFFICIALLY the worst failure rate in the history of an electronic appliance

Then gave us the lie that is natal an no exclusives near the end of 360s lifespan. Deja vu "

What has that got to do with this and overblown promises?

The only Deja vu here is your rant.

@Rain

"'d say they delivered on the graphics side of things more than not "

But that's not the point. So let me get this straight. If at E3, MS uses CGI in a way that makes it look like the representations are in-game its all good if, at the end of the day the games look more or less the similar? Btw, if anyone is even going to argue that Motorstorm looks like its reveal trailer, I'm not even going to bother arguing with such deluisional nonsense.

You guys are basically affirming Sony's lie. Why can't you understand that?

@ Temporary

How about you apply your standards globally? What about the PSN hacking scandal that was the BIGGEST in history of its kind?

And regarding the RROD fiasco- there's no denying how serious it was but MS did set aside £1 billion to rectify it. They didn't wait for YEARS like you misrepresent (on purpose I imagine). It was worse than YLOD granted, but the latter problem exists too. But all this is besides the point.

At the end of teh day, all I'm saying is, Sony shouldn't lie to us. I'm not saying they will, but they did so in the past, repeatedly. I would have thought that something as simple as that would register in the minds of even most hardened fans, but it goes to show how little credibility people have.

TLDR: Sony, show us ACTUAL in-game stuff, don't do what you did in the past. That is ALL.

stiggs4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

According to mandf, anyone that disagrees with his allegation is just a "hater".

Regardless of whether you are a right or wrong, you have proven yourself to be the epitome of a narrow-minded, biased fanboy.

creatchee4076d ago

@theBAWSE

What does any of that have to do with the PS3 launch, CGI vs retail in-game visuals, or pretty much anything that would be considered on-topic?

ON-TOPIC
Some of the footage shown was considered "target rendering", which is basically what they expect the final product to look like. Obviously some games meet the target, some games don't. I think that the problem is when target rendering is not presented as target, but as actual. Or at least it isn't explicitly stated as being target.

I just want to see what the PS4 can do - more importantly what the first party studios will do with it, being that they will most likely be the ones to get the most out of whatever is under the hood.

Apex134076d ago

Yes I agree if you're talking about the Killzone 3 because the others where pants.

xursz4076d ago

I get where he's coming from but didn't Nintendo recently do the same thing with Wiiu Zelda? Do people really care, because it seems like nothing to complain about considering Killzone came out looking almost identicle to the target render.

Are you honestly trying to say that the hacking prioblem which was caused by hackers is worse than the RRoD problem that was caused by Microsoft.

I agree that it wasnt years but from Nov06 to July07 RRod consoles were sold in abundance.

Both companies handled both situations excellently, but you can't really put a manufacturer error on the same level as a Hacker attack

greenpowerz4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

You're joking right? Comparing faulty consoles to massive worldwide security issue with people's identities and money.

SCORE

-MSFT 1 point=faulty 360 hardware
-Sony 3 points=faulty ps2 hardware, defective laptop batteries, global security failing.

DID SONY GIVE BACK ALL THE STOLEN MONEY? LIKE MSFT DID BY REPLACING RROD 360's? As if a defective console is in the same league as a houshold's information being stolen floated around by groups of hackers supposedly nobel or not.

I think the industry has advanced quit a bit since then, and it isn't possible to pull that off anymore.
I mean, just look at the fallout from the warZ or more recently alien: CM.

Gazondaily4076d ago

Yeah that's a good point. I doubt it too. Last time, we even had the likes of John Carmack getting involved dissecting the Killzone trailer and saying that it wasn't feasible (at the time he resorted to how the weapon was swaying to prove his point!).

I just don't want a repeat of that. It really left a sore taste for those who fell for it.

ThatXboxGuy4076d ago

Microsoft did the CGI shit too.Even worse.Remember that milo nonsense? And the guy trying to mimic the on screen movement of the star wars kinect? LOL.It was just disgraceful and frankly, insulting.

If Sony would of got caught doing that we would never hear the end of it.

grailly4076d ago

it's just that the MS lies didn't hurt core gamers like the sony ones. We really didn't care that much about milo or star wars kinect from the beginning. for example, if Sony lied about wonder book, there wouldn't be as much backlash as for the killzone 2 trailer.

Rainstorm814076d ago

Grailly how did Sonys lies hurt the core gamer when Sony is the main console company with core gamers in mind?

grailly4076d ago

because it created expectation... you see an awesome trailer you get exited and you learn that it's CG... kinda hurts. And how do you think core gamers weren't hurt by this? they are still complaining TO THIS DAY.

kenshiro1004075d ago (Edited 4075d ago )

End of day inferior third party games and first party not much different then competition. Now watch the disagrees fly for telling the truth. Trolls cant comprehend nor acept the cold hard truth.

Clarence4076d ago

Guerrilla released a rendered Killzone 2 would look like on the PS3. The actual gameplay was better.
What I find funny is Nintendo released a rendered version of what Zelda would look like on the Wii U no one said a word.

This is how bias the media and the other xbox fanboys are. Not calling you a fanboy just talking about the people who did so much hating on Sony back then.

Christopher4076d ago

***-MSFT 1 point=faulty 360 hardware
-Sony 3 points=faulty ps2 hardware, defective laptop batteries, global security failing.***

Wait, are we including all company-wide issues in here? If so, I believe you left out more than a few dozen vulnerability issues with Windows OS and similar products that have cause people to have their info stolen, had their systems hacked (including DBs), and the like.

More systems have been hacked and more personal information stolen because of Microsoft program than Sony. And Sony's data was encrypted and never utilized, which is not the same as the data that has been stolen from multiple banks/credit card companies over the years.

Look, Sony messed up big time. They painted a huge target on themselves this generation, hackers took advantage of it in every way possible including going after their system. They messed up. But, so has Microsoft on so many levels.

Hopefully both learn from their mistakes of this generation (as well as the mistakes of their competition) so we can not have them be repeated.

greenpowerz4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Lesser incidents could be racked up by the dozens and get subjective/redundant/petty and the point would be lost in trying to qualify the severity.

I'm talking about attention generating incidents that grab all people's attention.

-Large amounts of defective consoles do this as hardware is expensive.

-Dangerous hardware that can cause injury or death is a problem for people

-A family's indenity and financial security being compromised can be life changing or destroy a life/family

So does an average rational person think a faulty piece of console tech compares to harmful hardware burning a house down/put family at risk or possible life destroying or hindering security compromise is worse.

Dude was trying to compare MSFT and Sony issues from a company ego/numbers/money loss perspective not a real world consumer masses perspective. He tryied to paint that company team perspective as the only one factoring in as important to give Sony the upper hand. His point is the least important to the people buying these products.

The point was to bring him back to reality.

EDIT

"^ Was there actually any money stolen from the security breach to begin with?"

That was one of the first issues when people started to notice there was something greater wrong LMAO Some of the first stories about it were about money being gone out of accounts.

N4G covers news diffently(alternate universe) so you might get padded/nerfed negative news about Sony here.

Articles like these are pathetic. They are written by butthurt morons looking for a reason to b*tch about something because they can't stand the completely positive energy surrounding Sony recently in anticipation for the event tonight. Rather than just accept people are feeling good about something in gaming, which is very rare these days thanks to morons like the aforementioned butthurt variety, these Rhodes Scholars are trying to purposely shift the energy from positive to negative.

Take your negativity and shove it where it belongs. If you don't like people being happy about something, get some mental help and leave us alone.

IcicleTrepan4076d ago

Why is it pathetic to review the company's prior track record? Nothing stated was untrue. SCEA and Sony itself are both known for hyping their products using lies. If that bursts your little bubble, blame Sony.

DragonKnight4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

It's pathetic because the timing chosen is childish and is just another attempt at undermining the positive vibe surrounding Sony right now. It's pathetic because it's specifically designed to use the attention that Sony is getting right now in a subversive manner. It's pathetic because there is no concrete fact about what exactly Sony will show at the event, yet it is somehow necessary to post a negative article about how Sony "overhype" their products and are arrogant and lie. Is that really necessary? No, it isn't. It's pathetic hit mongering from people who are looking for something to b*tch about and have exhausted the already unfounded negative rumours of things like blocking used games.

Gazondaily4076d ago

I feel sorry for Xbox fans who have to put up with constant digs regarding Kinect and online fees etc.

I'm sorry but when you essentially start off your rant with references like "butthurt morons" it's hard to take you seriously. There were valid points made in this article.

"Wow! Well then going by your logic, I feel sorry for all the Nintendo fans who have to constantly be shot down by fanboys (I won't mention which kind) who rain on their parade in every article."

Wow, way to miss the point. Clearly you neglected to read the fact that I was being specific to this event. Nintendo and Microsoft don't deserve it any more than Sony does if people are excited around their events. Given that you agree with the article, I can logically reach the conclusion that you enjoy being negative as well and simply love to look for something to b*tch about. Not being one given to making assumptions about people that way, I simply won't stoop to your level on that regard.

"I'm sorry but when you essentially start off your rant with references like "butthurt morons" it's hard to take you seriously. There were valid points made in this article."

I'm sorry, where was the part where I said or implied "gee, I want to know Septic's opinion about my opinion. I do hope I've impressed the seriousness of my post upon him?" Basically, your critique of an opinion is irrelevant.

"Take on your own advice and just don't bother clicking the article if it bothers you so much. Its that simple."

You're the one that wrote a blog, wanting more people to criticize Nintendo, remember?

... and now you're calling the author a 'butthurt moron' because he has the audacity to mention the past. I suppose it's his fault that being reminded of history somehow affects your fragile happiness.

DragonKnight4076d ago

"You're the one that wrote a blog, wanting more people to criticize Nintendo, remember?"

Actually, if YOU remember the blog (btw, awesome use of time drudging up topics completely irrelevant to the discussion) it was about how Nintendo gets free passes. It had nothing to do with a Nintendo event, it wasn't written around a time when Nintendo was getting all kinds of positive attention in a vain attempt at subverting that and turning it into negative attention, and it was a blog that could be approved or not. But hey, let's ignore facts in favour of blanket generalizations in an effort to discredit someone because that's what the name of the game is right?

"... and now you're calling the author a 'butthurt moron' because he has the audacity to mention the past."

Another who missed the point. This article, just like the rest of the negative articles that have been popping up more frequently as Sony's event draws closer, is done with the specific purpose of being negative around a time when everything else is positive. There is no reason for it other than to be a draw of attention thanks to all the attention Sony is getting. People will look for Sony news, and oh gee look let's talk about Sony's "lies" and "mistakes" because, you know we have to do that. Why? Well because everyone is looking forward to Sony's event, we have to have SOME hate don't we?

"I suppose it's his fault that being reminded of history somehow affects your happiness."

Nice oversimplification. What a wonderful contribution you've made to the discussion.

Ducky4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

" It had nothing to do with a Nintendo event"

Oh really, so that's why you mentioned Nintendo Direct in it?

---
"This article, just like the rest of the negative articles that have been popping up more frequently as Sony's event draws closer, is done with the specific purpose of being negative around a time when everything else is positive."

Maybe that's how you see it. To me, it is a reminder to take things with a grain of salt, and holds true for any announcement from any company. Sony is singled out because they will be making a recent announcement. If it was anyone else, I'd expect someone to make an article about them too.

If you want to ignore the past and be all hyped up, fine... just don't call someone else a 'butthurt moron' when they offer a dose of reality.

I own all of Sony's consoles, and this article didn't dent my excitement for tonight's event. Not one bit. Seems to me you're imagining something sinister out of something that is more innocent.

---
"Nice oversimplification. What a wonderful contribution you've made to the discussion."

Re-read your comments. You're not in any position to talk about oversimplification.

DragonKnight4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

"Maybe that's how you see it. To me, it is a reminder to take things with a grain of salt, and holds true for any announcement from any company. Sony is singled out because they will be making a recent announcement."

It's not how I see it, it's how it is. If you want people to take things with a grain of salt then you say "take this with a grain of salt." You don't write an article about lies and mistakes in some way of allegedly reminding people to "take things with a grain of salt", you write an article talking about how everything currently believed about Sony's event is a rumour and that there is no hard evidence in favour of a new console release. That's not what this article is, it's a blatantly negative article of the kind that has been popping up recently in an attempt to change the vibe. Since they can't rehash the used games block rumour, they switch to the Past when it's completely unnecessary. Especially if the point of the article is the point you're choosing to believe is being made.

"If you want to ignore the past and be all hyped up, fine... just don't call someone else a 'butthurt moron' when they offer a dose of reality."

Who said anything about ignoring the Past? This isn't about reality, reality is the Present. In the Present Sony is doing amazingly well with the PS3, in the Future (later today) they MAY be announcing the PS4. That's fact, that's reality, the "Past" being brought up here is pure negative tripe and you know it. There is literally no legitimate reason for discussing this, especially now, unless you're actively trying to be negative.

"I own all of Sony's consoles, and this article didn't dent my excitement for tonight's event. Not one bit. Seems to me you're imagining something sinister out of something that is more innocent."

Good for you. Does that matter? No. The point is that articles like these are tacky, pathetic, and unnecessary. Let me ask you a question from a different angle. In a moment of pure positivity, where all people want nothing more than to be happy about something, what benefit is there in purposeful negativity based strictly around unsubstantiated rumour? What justification is there in even ATTEMPTING to ruin the mood regardless of the success of that attempt?
============================= ===============
"Oh really, so that's why you mentioned Nintendo Direct in it?"

Did you read my blog? Stupid question, I know you went back to read it, but did you understand that the blog was not about Nintendo Direct and wasn't written around the time of the event? Of course you don't understand that. To understand that means to cast aside your need to discredit me. Whatever.

"Re-read your comments. You're not in any position to talk about oversimplification."

Again, what a wonderful contribution you've made to the discussion. Most of what you've said hasn't even been about the topic, just more foolish attempts at discrediting me. Since this is my last bubble, I won't be able to make any more replies and that's fine. I'll simply close with the fact that this article isn't about me. It wasn't written by or for me. If you're incapable of discussing the topic at hand and instead wish to fixate on me, I have to say that that form of flattery doesn't interest me and you may stop fixating on me and discuss the actual topic at hand in this thread. There's no need to waste time in PM'ing me either, as I'm not looking for anyone's attention here. N4G historians are always the same and it's pretty creepy.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

Tales Of Graces Ƒ Retro Review – Holding Out For a Hero

Gary Green said: Namco Bandai heard the call of many fans asking for the PlayStation release of Tales of Graces which was originally released seemingly exclusively for the Wii back in 2009. If you’re acquainted with the Tales series then Graces f won’t be something entirely new to you, yet if you’re a newcomer then you’ll find a plethora of gameplay mechanics and nuances that distinguish this series from other JRPGs. While the game finds itself following the traditional archetype of JRPGs, such as a somewhat clichéd story, Graces has something to offer to both veterans and newcomers alike.
