Why Sony Needs To Be More Aggressive With Exclusive PlayStation 4 Games

Forbes -- Sony is all but assured of announcing its new PlayStation 4 console tonight at a big press event in New York City. Video game analyst PJ McNealy, founder of Digital World Research, will be in attendance at the big unveiling. With rumors of new exclusive games from Quantic Dream (Singularity), Konami (Metal Gear Solid 5), Square Enix and other powerhouses in gaming, exclusives will play a big role in getting consumers to fork over money for a new console – especially if PS4 goes head-to-head against the new Xbox this Christmas as many expect.

I'd love to see a Killzone and Uncharted game demo tonight on PS4.

NateCole4081d ago

Uncharted will be at E3 imo. KZ4 most likely.

The guy making this quote seems to think that exclusives are just DLC content. In this regard it's hard to say if Sony needs to "Step it Up". If that's what is making MS so successful then it's a pretty thin argument.

Sony has always had a strong 1st party line up, and despite the guys assertion that it's success is only LBP or Uncharted, the truth is Sony has a wide range of 1st party exclusives that appeal to a broad range of people. Most sell pretty well, but people discount them because they aren't selling in excess of 10-20 million copies like some of the 3rd party multi-plats do(COD).

Their 2nd party has definitely seen a shift this gen, but there are still plenty of 3rd party exclusives on the PS3, mostly from Japan though.

Quite honestly I could care less about who gets DLC first. I'd rather the money spent on 1st dibs of that be spent on a new IP, or and existing franchise that fans already love. It's what Sony has always done, and is one of the biggest things that sets them apart from the competition.

NateCole4081d ago

Completely agree. It's one of the sad things that started this gen. Exclusive or time exclusive DLC. What's even more sad is gamers buying into it.

It is very sad to see gamers treating time exclusive DLC like full game exclusives.

As you said. It's not about selling gazillion copies of games but rather having a wide range of games that will make the console appeal to everyone.

In terms of exclusive IP's no one can match Sony's portfolio.

Sony's been creating new ip's since the PS1 days that up to now dwarf's the competition.

Even in the PS1 they have colony wars, Mid-evil, ape escape, Syphon Filter etc etc and this not including all the ip's they have from the PS2 and PS3 era.

The problem is they just need to market them properly.

They need some aggressive advertising, a complete 180 from what they have been doing.

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

H922h ago

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I think if used correctly it could work well

Yuji Naka guilty of insider trading breaks silence to accuse Square Enix producer of lies

Yuji Naka was fined $1.2 million and given a suspended jail sentence for the crime.

I find his comments around how Balan turned out to be very insightful as to why the game is trash. He basically apologises for its existence

solideagle13d ago

can you please give some of us who don't know anything about this, a summary of what happened?

Chocoburger13d ago

Balan was knowingly rushed out by S-E, it had an extremely short dev cycle and was fairly low budget.
Naka was the game's director until near the end when he was fired or perhaps he quit, I forgot.

carrotcakeag13d ago

@Chocoburger Yeah they did fire and replace him which caused him to unload a bunch of rants about the company. The project only existed because of Naka in the first place, he convinced Square to give him one shot at making a platformer. They gave him an opportunity but pulled the rug out before he was done for reasons not explained.
