Game Fan Destroys Journalism out of Spite

Rare is there a case in which a videogame was met with such vitriol as DmC: Devil May Cry. The new Devil May Cry even generated animosity between fans and the gaming press, but ultimately, the press failed to highlight either side of the debate like good journalists should.

"...but ultimately, the press failed to highlight either side of the debate like good journalists should."

Exactly, and rest of the article does a fairly good job to explain what Ben Parfitt's mindblowingly stupid article failed to acknowledge.

inb4 someone brings up the "fans hated it because of the hair" argument...

So called game "Journalism" are bunch of pathetic wannabe gamers, think they know everything about games just because they throw some random "opinions" and score at games they like or dislike...

People should stop listing to their reviews/opinion, its one opinion vs millions. Their point of view is rubbish and some of them get credit $$$ for giving a game high scores to boost sales.

No, reviews should NOT be ignored, you should find the ones that matches your style most closely and stick with them. Reviews are consumer advice, and gamers end up buying drivel like Colonial Marines precisely because so many of them didn't wait for/ignored reviews.

This attitude of telling people to ignore what critics say sounds an awful lot like what publishers would prefer gamers to do....mindlessly open their wallets and buy everything they release.

Of course there are bad review sites, and reviewers not to be trusted. That's where it becomes important to get a few different opinions. The really crooked reviews - such as the abysmal effort from the clown at EGM who gave Aliens a 9/10 while having zero depth in his review - well they are fairly easy to spot. Saying that people should disregard reviews is dangerous and stupid. People need to learn that it's OK to disagree with reviewers, and that when you do, it doesn't mean that that person's opinion is automatically less valid than your own, or that reviewers don't know what they're talking about.

It's a good game.....just not te game traditional fans wanted. It affected sales in that regard...if it had been the old Dante I beieve it would had made its target. I enjoyed the game but understand the other side to an extent.

ThanatosDMC4076d ago

It's not about old Dante. It's the whole package.

theWB274076d ago

That's why I said it's not the traditional game fans wanted..

I swear, it's almost like every defender of DmC always goes back to the hair, like as if that there are absolutely no other complaints for the game and that is literally the only reason why fans of Devil May Cry do not enjoy DmC.

That is the equivalent of someone shoving their fingers in their ears, going "LALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALA" while the other person tries to say why they didn't like whatever it is that they didn't like.

It could be argued that the older fans do the exact same thing whenever anyone tries to point out the positives of the new game, or even the areas where the new and old don't really differ all that much and they've simply tweaked the approach.
Old fans want it the same way, or no way...and I understand that to an extent, being a fan of old school Resident Evil games. But even then, I could appreciate the game that Resident Evil 4 become as there was enough of the old school spirit left in the game. I look on DmC the same way....enough of the spirit of the original game is there.

This, but lets throw rocks at the the people who enjoyed the reboot /s.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but as someone who's relatively neutral-positive towards the series, I totally understand where Parfitt is coming from.

I've seen some very intelligent arguments against DmC's existence, and while I don't agree with most of them, I respect them. But the ratio of ignorance to intelligence I've seen in comments all over the Web is astonishingly skewed towards the former. Comments that obviously come from people who refused to play the game (or only tried the demo) and make points that are plainly contradicted by the game itself.

Who do I blame for the franchise's current predicament? The fans? No. Ninja Theory? No. Capcom? Yes, but not for the reason you might think. If they jumped straight from Devil May Cry 3 into DmC, I would have been mad. But 4 was a huge indication that the series was in danger of stagnation. My opinion, of course.
