Destiny Delayed For Call Of Duty, Says Analyst

Bungie's new game Destiny won't be arriving this year, according to publisher Activision's announcement yesterday. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia believes that the Activision wants to make sure that the game isn't directly competing with the next Call of Duty.

So innovation now directly competes against routine, cookie-cutter gameplay?

On second thought, I see his point.

zerocrossing4077d ago (Edited 4077d ago )

They don't want to compete with CoD no matter how inferior it is.

Better to let CoD have its undeserved lime light and then strike unimpeded IMO.

Seraphim4077d ago

my problem is this. quit thinking you're competing against CoD. People who are buying CoD are either going to or not going to buy other games.

MidnytRain4076d ago

But Activision publishes both CoD AND Destiny, so they're spreading out their "hits."

I got an idea...dont release cod this year. Support black ops, release Destiny and work on a new next gen cod that revitalizes the franchise instead. Just do something for black ops 2 like release an updated next gen version with 6 new maps etc and sell for $25 and let infinity ward have an extra yr working on MW4. You could actually release it with the 720 and sell more consoles. Maybe its alot of work but ppl just want to play online and microsoft would pay a ton for something like that. I dont think tbey understand that no matter how good it may be, ppl get tired. A year off could be a blessing

otherZinc4077d ago

Destiny will release this year.
It may release 1 month before COD.

DigitalRaptor4077d ago

You also said that it DEFINITELY wouldn't be coming to PS3, and look what happened. You are a sage! ;)

@ DigitalRaptor

He's not wrong yet. So I am not sure what you are proving....

So...I assume destiny games will have to launch well before winter time (spring-ish??) and will probably never launch during fall.

AngelicIceDiamond4077d ago (Edited 4077d ago )

That's what I'm thinking. The truth is the COD fanbase need their yearly fix of the COD shot. I would want Destiny to be "That Alternative shooter." But COD's fanbase is to big.

Imo if Activision pushes Destiny as hard as it does COD than I can see it standing a chance with Cod. Look at Halo or Battlefield, those game legitimately stole some of COD's market share.

Destiny just suffers from "that new shooter" on the market the only advantage they have is a very well know developer's name behind the shooter.

This is just an opinion but Activision should team up with MS to promote the Ip on Xbox first. Just to get that Xbox crowd behind them and reassure Xbox owners who supported them first time to trust in Bungie again to make the game a hit.

Trenta274077d ago

I was hoping that Activision would die out sometime within these next few years. Sad to say that probably won't happen...

DEATHxTHExKIDx4077d ago

U know that would be ok. I would hate to see this game overshadowed because of CODs BS. And it gives them more time to refine the game.

barb_wire4077d ago

All that COD $$$ is what's paying for 'Destiny' Acti needs that cash cow for now.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter326d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell325d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig326d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast326d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g326d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka326d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai477d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface476d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard474d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
