Report: PS4 Heavily Integrated With Gaikai, YouTube, Social Networks

The new PlayStation also will allow players to share achievements on social networks through smoother links to Facebook or Twitter, while also enabling aspects such as sharing footage of game play online through YouTube, people familiar with Sony’s plans said. Sony’s new console may also allow users to compete against others using different hardware, such as smartphones and other portable devices

Arai4081d ago

Good read, I wonder if Sony will integrate Google's services (talk, Chrome, Google+).
They seem to have an all-around package that could benefit everyone.

darthv724081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

I'm curious of what kind of compression used that could inhibit the visual quality PS3 games are known for.

then again, they could always cache a good portion of the game to the HDD to compensate. We will know more on the 20th.

edit: @kwiet... when it comes to video/audio compression, there are things like silverlight and other codecs that can do a really good job of compress/decompress on the fly. But then again a movie is a linear format. Meaning it plays from beginning to end with no variables in what happens as it plays.

Games are very different with constant variables to have to accommodate for.

KwietStorm_BLM4081d ago

I've been wondering if they're incorporating the same tools other streaming services like Netflix have been pushing on ISPs to get higher quality bitrates without needing super high end connections.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

I remember playing BF3 demo on gaikai early last year. They let you see the settings. It was 720p some medium and some high settings looked good though.

Funny enough I also played the pc version of alan wake on gaikai. I wonder if they could legally stream any xbox/pc multiplat game?

Anyway from what I seen with my own eyes It will do ps3 justice. It used around 8 mb/s at the time.

I have no doubt ps4 will be the best next gen console. Sony main focus is games as it should be.

What come to mind is that everyone is worried that ps4 will make people pay to play their old games.

I can imaging that since ps4 will still use blu ray you can just put the disk in to verify that you own a certain game? That seems smart.

If this is true then it will be great!

PS4 will be cheaper I guess. PS3 fat has BC hardware with PS2. Now its got Gaikai to do that.

Ju4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

I'm leaning myself out of the window here and say there won't be any PS3 BC, neither through Gaikai (this just doesn't work, people...) nor otherwise.

But what I still believe is, it will be possible to stream PS4 games (advanced remote play). Well, we'll see if I'd be the jerk Wed night. LOL.

But, what I'm curious is, if we also have advanced cross play, what was mentioned there. Like, online play across Vita, PS3 and PS4. And even safe games across the cloud and backporting of some of the PS4 features to the PS3 - like multi login, etc. Making this PlayStation "platform" not just a "device". Basically across multiple devices.

Remote play from PS4 to any device is possible if they put a HW decoder into the device and maybe use Gaikai's advanced encoders to do so. While streaming from a PS3 (a la remote play) only worked with some titles. I'd expect ALL PS4 games to support this, not just a handful.

BTW: Is nobody surprised this would actually fall inline with Sony's registration of it's "EyePad", basically a tabled with game controls?

Lvl_up_gamer4081d ago

Unfortunately Sony seems to be really focusing on Gaikai with the PS4. I have a 120gb limit with my internet provider. Using Netflix alone eats up a lot of my available bandwidth.

I will be skipping the PS4 next gen. I just won't be able to afford the extra charges I will get from my internet provider from streaming games.

Real shame. I would love to play some of the PS1 classics.

We are still not there yet when it comes to cloud based gaming due to internet provider low bandwidth caps and high surcharges for going over it.

blackbeld4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

@lvlupgamer

"I will be skipping the PS4 next gen. I just won't be able to afford the extra charges I will get from my internet provider from streaming games."

The Xbox 720, will require an Internet connection to function, it will not work without it. And Netflix streaming is ok?

So you will stay with last gen?

Then you should change you're name to lvl down gamer.

DragonKnight4081d ago

The one thing should understand and I hope will is that most of this WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE DAY 1.

That's always the problem with gamers and news like this, they get so hyped up expecting these features day 1 and then bash the companies endlessly until the features are released, and then they bash the companies for taking too long to implement them. THIS STUFF TAKES TIME!

Lvl_up_gamer4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

@ blackbeld

Only an idiot would believe the 720 will require a constant internet connection.

Please don't be an idiot.

Also note, a constant internet connection doesn't use up anywhere near the level of bandwidth of constant streaming. Especially for games.

Red_Orange_Juice4081d ago

let's hope Gaikai = PC games on PS4

dboyman4080d ago

@Lvl_up_gamer I agree. Not everyone can use streaming services like \Gaikai, especially in your case as well as not all places have decent broadband, like rural areas. Heck I know a few people who have consoles not connected to internet. We should get an optional "Premium Deluxe " model with Cell/Rsx built in for ps3 compatibility for those will to pay for that...

OpenGL4080d ago

Cache a good portion of a video stream to the hard drive? Otherwise what exactly will they cache to the hard drive? The PS4 if running AMD hardware as the rumors suggest will not be able to run PS3 games in any form, so they'll have to streams or rewritten/ported just like PS2 HD classics or any game not originally developed for the PS3.

Donnieboi4080d ago

Seriously they can divide up parts of a cloud game by putting parts of it on our local ps4's harddrive? How is that possible? Maybe for a movie or audio, but how will this work for an interactive game? Please tell me more as I am ezxcited for what this could also mean for ps3 owners. If this IS possible, then maybe ps3 owners can also play ps4 games via gaikai if portions of the game will save on the harddrive (which could significantly reduce the amount of bandwidth speed needed to be streamed per second...which also means that it MIGHT be able to stream almost lag-free even on low (yet still broadband) connections. Hmm, i'm no techy, but if i'm wrong, someone please explain the possibilities this may or may not have. Thank you.

darthv724080d ago

call it buffering if you like instead of cacheing.

i dont know how it will work but the idea of having some sort of local assets stored on the hdd that cut down on stream loading then by all means, sony and gaikai will be the ones to figure that out.

actually...doesnt home already do something like this? I know that it does something to cache the different areas you are in so the dynamic portion is the actual characters that wander about.

the backgrounds and static content never really changes so it helps cut down on loading.

The main thing is games :P
A good line-up for launch, a good price !

Now if they can improve somes features or add feature, it would be great.
Like voice chat, group of friend, an OS improve and very fluid, a PS Store more fluid and fast

Ripsta7th4081d ago

"Now if they can improve somes features or add feature, it would be great.

They NEED voice group chat, this is a needed feature. I will be disapointed if they dont, and so will many

ArmGunar4081d ago

It can't be implanted in PS3 because lack of RAM

With PS4, I hope they'll do it !

AngelicIceDiamond4081d ago

The question is how much is Sony gonna charge for these? Sony owns Gaikai but the Gaikai studio itself needs revenue as well.

wishingW3L4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

maybe they will raise the price of PS+ by 10-20 dollars to include Gaikai support too while keeping online gaming free.

Jobesy4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

Good question. It could be a tier pricing. I see PS+ moving to a tiered pricing setup. Different packages for different tastes. My main concern is that Sony will keep online play free and have basic features like x-game chat and a small chunk of cloud storage.

Ju4081d ago

Well, another not so popular opinion, but I also believe Gaikai will seize to exist. I'm guessing it will be completely integrated into the Sony Entertainment Network. I could imagine, some business customers will stay on until contracts expire. But other than that, I don't see that survive as and autonomous entity. Streaming games is not profitable. The tech however is very useful.

Saigon4081d ago

From this now I am starting to realize what the patent Sony applied for, to read the purchased disk version, is really for. I am start to think the Gaikai service will give the user the option to stream the game live by popping in the disk from PS3 and maybe even the PS4. Or somehow use the tandem in some type of way. I guess that is the reason why the patent stated it needed to see if it was an official purchased game or a used game, maybe to determine how you receive the content. Either way this makes the 20th far more interesting.

gedapeleda4080d ago

I know it's higly unreal but it would be nice if ps4 runs on some android os.

xtremeimport4080d ago

I still think they should've used android in someway with the PSV.

even incorporating Google Play to expand their app market.

idk, just a thought.

jay24081d ago

I'll be keeping my PS3 due to my net connection then.

ApolloTheBoss4081d ago

Not sure how I feel about this, but it would be cool if we could share gameplay videos. Like record headshots that have a one in a million chance of ever happening again.

CommonSenseGamer4081d ago

To be honest I could not care about integration with social media sites, I don't do this on my PS3, 360 or Android tablet.

Tomb Raider Remastered just quietly censored one in-game detail

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered players are ticked off by the game’s most recent patch, which censors in-game pin-up posters of Lara Croft.

This is why gaming is screwed. When people change things to fit someone’s agenda, it’s a slippery slope downhill.

Christopher4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Even if that agenda is of the developer? Way to remove developer rights.

***One player called it a “huge problem with modern games,” saying they can now be “ruined AFTER people buy them”.***

The level of drama. Yes, I recall sitting there for more hours than I did anything else in the game. These two pinups are the core of the game, after all!

coolbeans3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

rlow1's cringe catastrophizing aside, I do think developers *ought* to strive to maintain an original work to the best of their ability. The language of a "remaster" tacitly implies that - for good or ill - what's being resold is what fans remember but better.

Profchaos3h ago

Games can be ruined after purchasing them yeah we know this not from this but from GTA IV which had half it's radio content patched out due to licensing expirations and to me that was a huge deal.

This pin up poster is a bit of nonsense but the whole argument of modern games can be ruined post launch is Absol true.

DedicatedDark2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

It's not their work to censor. They are incharge of restoration & remastering the work, not overwriting it.

Barlos1h ago

It's not the agenda of the developer though, they're pandering and trying to increase their ESG score.

Way to support censorship...

victorMaje1h ago

It’s not the end of the world for sure, but I understand the hate towards this kind of change. I believe it’s also a matter of principle.

Imagine a Picasso painting being restored & the restorer deciding there aren’t enough strokes, or some lines aren’t straight enough or curved enough…not sure it would/should sit well with people.

Have all original devs signed off on this change? Even if it’s the case, are we saying older gamers are better mentally equipped to process what was there than current gamers, hence the change?

Enough time ago the case was made that games are an art form. We’re supposed to have won that case.
So which is it? Are games art or not?

Eidolon1h ago

Hasn't this been happened for over a decade since remasters? I can't see that it's any worse now. Maybe if Sweet Baby starts getting their hands on remasters we will definitely have a problem.

Rebel_Scum4h ago

tbh I dont see something like this as censorship. Does anyone else not find it strange for someone to stick pin ups of themsleves in a locker room?

Now of it was a pin up of some half naked firefighters it might make sense as Lara might like that, and if they removed that I would cry censorship. But removing pin ups of the main character, yeah I get it.

Barlos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It's a game, and they were placed there for the audience. It's not real life. If it was, she wouldn't have fought a T-Rex now would she?

Yes, it's censorship but it's a bit less in your face. If they were in the original game, then they should have been in the remasters. It's bad enough that they have that ridiculous unnecessary warning at the start, but then they start removing things post launch. I don't care how small the change, they shouldn't be doing it. It's nothing but ESG pandering but in a subtle way.

SimpleDad48m ago

By the year 2030, this remaster collection will totally be changed and censored. Probably will remove Lara as a playable character. It's ridiculous. Glad that my family didn't buy this.
I still have Tomb Raider 2 PS1 as a memory.

CobraKai17m ago

It’s mentioned in the article, and it’s a point i 100% agree with, it’s the fact that they can censor a game after you buy it. That’s total bullshit.

Killer2020UK0m ago

Whilst it's an overreaction to say this has "ruined" the game, it's still problematic that this has happened post launch and for many, post-purchase.

I don't want someone to change a product for the worse after I've bought it. The same goes for implementing micro transactions after reviews.

I wonder why they did this? Nobody was kicking up a fuss as far as I'm aware.

Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster Review – You Are Your Job, Apparently

Gary Green said: In a time where an enhanced, 3D remake of Final Fantasy III already exists, it’s hard to argue that Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster is the definitive version we were expecting. With Final Fantasy III already being the last in the series to be translated and make its way west, this is something of a slap in the face for the fans. Still, let’s not be disheartened. There may be many shortfalls in this edition of Final Fantasy III, however there’s no denying that this classic JRPG still holds some nostalgic value, even if it struggles to break away from its original hardware limitations.
